When the hell did James Bond start playing Texas Hold'em?
Casino Royale
To me, their are 5 absolutes in the James Bond universe. 1) Bond, James Bond 2) Martini, shaken not stirred 3) British made Autos: Bentley and Aston Martin 4) And, a mean game of Baccarat. 5) Oh yeah, And the Babes. So, Imagine my surprise last night when James Bond set down and starting playing a game of Texas Hold'em. What the Hell. Why don't they have James Bond go outside and get into his Dodge Viper while drinking a Whiskey-Sour while there at it? Anyone know if the Texas Hold'em move was written in by Hollywood?

#1 - Of course it was a hollywood add-in.
#2 - Honestly, was this the only thing you noticed that was different or unusual in the movie? Pretty clearly the movie was intended as a character "restart" - thus the lack of (and even flouting of) many of the now-familiar Bond traditions. |

I think you have to admit, Baccarat is a pretty stupid game.

I'd suggest that Casino Royale may be the best Bond movie ever.

I know it was a restart, but I loved it. Definitely one of the best Bonds ever.

Hell yes.
Daniel Craig was a brilliant casting choice there.

fwiw, bond has played more than just bacarrat through out time...he has played blackjack in at least 2 films, and whatever game he played in india, so to me, its just character evolution matching popular trends....who even knows how to play bacarrat anymore?

Correct. If we're placing Bond in today (as Casino Royale did), then he should be playing the games of today. I surmise right now that there is more likelihood that a multimillion dollar game of poker would be going on than Baccarat. Last edited by Vinatieri for Prez : 04-23-2007 at 03:15 PM. |

Also, you don't play baccarat against another person.
If you are going to have a high stakes baccarat tournament, you may as well have a high stakes slot machine tournament. Last edited by albionmoonlight : 04-23-2007 at 12:46 PM. |

dola--
I really liked the movie. The traditional Bond movies had their charm, but I thought that this one was the best--and one of the only ones that works as a stand-alone movie. |

double dola--
The one time I went to Vegas, I was there for four days. I never saw one non-Asian in the baccarat lounge. It maybe used to be a game for British spies, but it seems to have evolved into a game almost exclusively for Asian businessmen. |

i did not like this bond.
lets stop everything for an hour of poker. i couldve watched that on espn. now if bond just chased that guy from the beginning that could climb anything, and that was it for 2 hours, it wouldve been my favorite bond easily. |

Did one of the mods just delete my post because it had the word Octopu$$y in it?
I mentioned that he played high stakes backgammon in that movie while in India (could have sworn I posted it), but now the post is gone. |

That's not true of chemin de fer, which is the variant featured in the original Casino Royale. The strategy does not strike me as being as rich as in poker, but it's not merely a game of chance.

I loved Casino Royale.
"Martini." "Shaken or stirred, sir?" "Does it look like I give a damn?"
