Well, I've known a number of friends that smoked a fair amount of pot at that age and for many years beyond that and were (and are today) still successful and productive parts of society, so the fact she smokes dope isn't necessarily a good reason to be worried about her. Pot is a pretty mild drug, arguably no worse than alcohol.

That being said, I've also seen people that smoke way too much pot and were unreliable flakes with little motivation. As for what other drugs she might be experimenting with, those may be cause for concern depending on what she might be getting in to (I'd be particularly worried about heroin and crystal meth).

Might be worth trying to strike up a conversation with her about it. I'd avoid making any judgements about it with her at first to gain her trust so you can get a better idea about exactly what her usage is like and what else she might be into besides pot. At that point you'll have a much better idea if there's a real problem or not.

OK, now that I've messed-up and stayed on the original topic, what about those pics Jeeber?

Yeah, but the amount of worry for me depends on what those other ones might be. If she's messing around with psychadelics like 'shrooms or LSD, I'd be mildly concerned; if it's party drugs like Ecstasy I'd be moderately concerned; if it's cocaine I'd be quite concerned; if it's heroin, crystal meth or crack I'd be very concerned. I find it interesting that LSD or shrooms is only mildly concerning in your view. There is scientific evidence that they can have long lasting effects, including long-lasting psychosis.

But since those drugs are generally considered to be of the non-physically addictive drugs, there is usually plenty of time for the "phase" to wear off without too much long term effect. I've always been a little frightened about the way LSD works in the brain, but I too would label it less concerning than coke, herion, etc. simply because of the addiction issue.

No. Tragically, I was very boring during my younger days. Growing up in a family of alcoholics and addicts has a way of educating you about the life while deterring you from entering it yourself. I didn't even start drinking until I was well into my 20's because of my family history (although I didn't recognize that as the reason I didn't drink at the time). There are days I wish I had been a little wilder in my youth, but I think I was just too afraid of following a well worn path in my family.
