Councilman: NYC needs statehood

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- The last time there was a decent tax revolt here, America was born.

This time, New York City could become the nation's 51st state, if a secession proposal by a local councilman succeeds.

Simply put, Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. argues, the city pays $3.5 billion more to the state in taxes than it gets in return and can't afford it anymore.

"We need our money back," he said this week.

"In the past the idea of secession was romantic and maybe cute. Now it may be the only way for the city to survive," Vallone said.

Novelist Norman Mailer argued for secession in his 1969 quixotic mayoral bid. In the 19th century, a pro-slavery mayor proposed New York secede during the U.S. Civil War.

Its funny, because I grew up in Upstate NY, and they pull out numbers every year showing that their tax money goes to support NYC - they WANT to get rid of them.

Politicians, invent numbers "proving" something? Never, I say.

Heck, Atlanta already seems to have made itself the 51st state. It hasn't had much of anything to do with the rest of Georgia in years.

What would they call it? New York City State? My suggestions would be Giant Craphole, but maybe that's just me.

Hell, statehood, they don't even have a football team.

I'm sure NYC needs statehood, but the tax situation is a disaster. We pay federal, state, and LOCAL income tax and yet the city is bankrupt. I lose 49.9% of every paycheck and every with a high income, the cost-of-living is so high because of property values and other taxes (like property tax) that get passed onto consumers by business. Saying we need statehood is clearly a politicians effort to attract attention, but something has to be done, because the city is cutting every service and taxes continue to increase.

Actually, about 10 years or so ago, there was a former state legislator who proposed splitting California into 3 states.

New York City really does get screwed. The guys in Albany are even better than the Federal Government at doing it too.

A few years ago the state declared invalid a moderate commuter tax that New York City had. This charged a very minor amount on the poeple for Long Island or Westchester, or wherever, that worked in New York.

Of course, plenty of the towns and cities in those areas still have commuter taxes in place, which affect NYC commuters, that are higher, percentage wise, than New York City's was.

I'm confused. I thought secession was not wanting to be part of the USA or any other country for that matter. I say let it happen. NYC would be its own country and would have to provide some commodities besides white collar industries. The US could tax all raw materials that go into that country and tax again for all products that come out of that country. I could be wrong, but I think this might be the best for the rest of the nation.

Well, the idea is to secede from the state-- not the country.
