Public Suicide October 4th?
Saw this, thought it was interesting, decided to share.
This is very G.G Allin-ish, but I dunno how many people on here will get that reference. "Industrial rock band HELL ON EARTH will feature a suicide at their State Theatre performance in St. Petersburg, FL on Saturday, October 4th. A Euthanasia Society member will carry out the suicide to raise awareness for dying with dignity. The Euthanasia member, who suffers from a terminal illness, is using the event as a platform to help make back-street suicides a thing of the past. Though his identity is being withheld until the day of the event, he did have this to say, "I thank the Lord that Hell On Earth is giving me this opportunity to end my suffering. I just want to say as my last will and testament that this is my God given choice to end my life. I'd prefer to have a physician-assisted suicide but until the laws are changed, those who are in pain like me will either have to continue to suffer or do it themselves." The event, The Hell On Earth Haunted Tour, is part of a national tour the band is on to support their new album, 'All Things Disturbingly Sassy'. For more information visit www.hellonearth.net." |

Speaking of G.G. Allin, has there ever been a more underrated song than "Gimme Some Head?"

Fritz, the more I think, the more it hurts.
George Michaels scared me as a child, but after seeing his video "Faith", I wonder how we were suprised at priest going after little boys.

Oops, gotta go. I see there's a seminar on "Understanding the Unintentional Comedy Scale" in the Tiki Room. Carry on.

Getting back to the original topic...
"I thank the Lord that Hell On Earth is giving me this opportunity to end my suffering." If this guy goes through with it, I'm voting him for a posthumous QOTM for that one.

An update:
Band's Plan For Onstage Suicide Is Investigated - Sep. 17, 2003 An industrial rock band's claim that they will feature a "live suicide" onstage during a St. Petersburg gig next month has gotten the attention of the concert hall's owners and police, according to Mitch Stacy of the Associated Press. The Tampa group, HELL ON EARTH, said on their web site that a terminally ill member of a right-to-die group planned to commit suicide on stage during an Oct. 4 performance at the State Theater. The volunteer, who the web site said would not be identified until the day of the show, wanted to carry out the suicide onstage to "raise awareness for dying with dignity." Dave Hundley, one of the owners of the theater, said he found out about it via an e-mailed press release Monday. He said he was hoping to talk with band members to determine whether they planned to carry out the stunt or were trying to generate publicity. "If I have an inkling that this is for real, I need to worry about it," Hundley said Tuesday. He stopped short of saying he would cancel the gig, for which the band paid to rent the downtown St. Petersburg theater. Hundley said HELL ON EARTH played the venue a couple of years ago and has been known to stage some strange stunts, such as chocolate-syrup wrestling and grinding up rats in a blender. "I wouldn't put it past them," he said of the staged suicide. Spokesman Bill Proffitt said St. Petersburg police started getting calls about the band's claim on Tuesday morning. It's a second-degree felony in Florida to assist a suicide, he said, but police were trying to get more information and hadn't yet determined how to respond. "We've just begun looking at it, and we're not quite sure where to go from here," Proffitt said. "Obviously, the St. Petersburg police does not condone public displays of suicide." The band's web site, which went down late Tuesday morning, did not say how the person planned to commit suicide. The volunteer hoped to use the event "as a platform to make back-street suicides a thing of the past," the site said. But the band shouldn't expect applause from right-to-die advocates, said David Goldberg, spokesman for the Denver-based End-of-Life Choices, formerly the Hemlock Society. "While we encourage national dialogue on dying and death issues, we are concerned about this particular circumstance," Goldberg said.

I haven't tried that one yet. In fact, even though I'm on the diet, I'd be inclined to go with the chocolate syrup wrestling, low carb or not.

And even more....
City Says No To 'Suicide Show', But Band Says Yes - Sep. 25, 2003 Florida shock-rockers HELL ON EARTH have vowed to go ahead with their plans to stage a live suicide during a concert in the city of St. Petersburg next month. Despite the fact that the city officials, in cooperation with the Florida Governors Office, have "strong-armed" venues into canceling their previously announced performance at State Theater on October 4, bandleader Billy Tourtelot has announced that the show will indeed take place at an undisclosed location within St. Petersburg city limits. The concert, which will include a live suicide by a terminally ill Euthanasia Society member, will be broadcast live over the Internet on www.hellonearth.net. Commented the singer, "This show is far more than a typical HELL ON EARTH performance — this is about standing up for what you believe in and I am a strong supporter of physician-assisted suicide. This performance will go on in its entirety and it will [take place] in St. Petersburg on October 4th." The Tampa group said last week on their web site that a terminally ill member of a right-to-die group planned to commit suicide on stage in a political statement about euthanasia. St. Petersburg police, unable to do anything before the performance, had planned to have officers in the audience if a suicide was attempted. Past band performances have included sodomizing skinned calves and blending dead rats then having fans drink the concoction. These guys make GWAR look tame.

And yet another update....
New Law Passed to Block Concert Suicide Sep 29, 12:07 PM EST The St. Petersburg city council passed a law Monday designed to scuttle a rock group's plans to feature an onstage suicide. The hard-rock band Hell on Earth had said that a suicide by a terminally ill person would take place during a concert Saturday to raise awareness of right-to-die issues. In response, the city council met Monday morning to unanimously approve an emergency ordinance making it illegal to conduct a suicide for commercial or entertainment purposes, and to host, promote and sell tickets for such an event. "While I still think it's a publicity stunt, we still couldn't sit idly by and let somebody lose their life," council member Bill Foster said. Tampa-based Hell of Earth, known for such outrageous onstage stunts as chocolate syrup wrestling and grinding up live rats in a blender, created the furor by announcing the suicide would happen Saturday at the Palace Theater in downtown St. Petersburg. But the theater's owner, David Hundley, promptly canceled the band's show, and another venue also turned away the event. Band leader Billy Tourtelot has vowed that the concert and suicide will still take place at an undisclosed location in the city, broadcast live on the band's Web site. "This show is far more than a typical Hell On Earth performance," Tourtelot said in an e-mail last week. "This is about standing up for what you believe in, and I am a strong supporter of physician-assisted suicide." A message left for Tourtelot was not immediately returned Monday. A Florida law already makes assisting in a suicide manslaughter, a second-degree felony. Hell on Earth is playing clubs in support of its independently produced album, "All Things Disturbingly Sassy."

I wonder if this is actually true. A lot of "shock" bands have all kinds of rumors going around about them, going back to Alice Cooper. "A message left for Tourtelot was not immediately returned Monday." I love when writers put something liek this in. What it probably means is they left a message, waited 10 seconds and then went and printed the story. |
