A new band heavily influenced by FoW, The Click Five, is going to be getting (or may already be getting, I don't watch the Music Television) a huge push by the industry and MTV. Five guys from the Berkeley Music School, with mop tops and matching suits, in the vein of FoW...down to the fact that the same guy produced the upcoming album as produces FoW, and Adam Schlesinger wrote a couple of songs for them. Also, believe it or not, but Paul Stanley also wrote a couple of songs for them and is a big backer.

As if that's not enough, they're opening for the Backstreet Boys this summer (:o)...

Despite all of that, the first single is pretty good. They can play and sing well. The song has way too much of a Stacy's Mom vibe, though, but it's definitely a good song. And yes, that's who you think it is playing the teacher in the video...

Adam Schelisnger produces Fountains of Wayne. In my opinion he's an ace producer with a unique sound. I pegged the They Might Be Giants sond "another first kiss" as a Schlesinger production before i even read the credits and verified it. To me his stuff has a very "bright" sound. Very crisp and clear, which is probably the opposite of the current trend.

Also, this isn't the first time Adam's gotten involved in this sort of thing, he's very big into pop. Pop in the Beatles sense of the pop song, not Brittney Spears and what people have come to envision pop as.

Schlesinger wrote the song "That Thing You Do" (for the Tom Hanks movie) and got involved in a writing/production aspect for the band Swirl 360 a couple years back.

Also, he's a full time member of the band Ivy, which i certainly recommend.

Mike Denneen is the producer for Welcome Interstate Managers - hence the name of the teacher in the video.

The credits are actually listed as Schelinger, Coliingswood, Deneen. But trust me, there's little doubt as to who is calling the shots.

Bah, aside from the keyboard, it doesn't sound like the Cars. Sounds more like Evan and Jaron, actually. The Cars synth sound has been a favorite of bands for the past few years, so this is nothing new.

I know all about Schlesinger, but I was just pointing out the ties between the band and this group, which include both he and Denneen. Denneen's played a part (big or not) with FoW for the past couple of albums, and now he's producing this. I don't know whether this particular song was written by Schlesinger, though, Ijust know he wrote a couple.

I'm sure this album will do well, given his involvement, the corporate backing, and the sound.

That song is credited only to Schlesinger. And to me it sounds very Cars, just as Stacy's Mom did. It's not a bad thing, just a fact (in my opinion).

And on the sucess of the band... im not so sure. The sound is dime-a-dozen (which might actually work in it's favor), but they might also just never be able to stick out enough to secure a hit.

Also, opening for the Backstreet Boys sounds ridiculous, but they're playing clubs at this point. They've gone from Madison Square Garden, to Irving Plaza (capacity ~ 1,800). BSB ain't what it used to be.

i think they opened for ashlee simpson or someone like that, too. theyve been out there a bit, seem to be getting a lot of buzz....from teenage girls and their moms.

In other FoW news, the B-sides and rarities disc came out this week, "Out of State Plates". Other than a couple of tracks, I'd already heard pretty much everything on here, but I still bought it because
A) I love the band.
B) The two new songs are bright shiny power pop and awesome.
C) The liner notes are quite funny.

Speaking of FoW sounding bands, OK Go's new album is coming out, and the single is out (okgo.net). I love power pop, so the new single kicked my ass.

I haven't heard it yet, but the Posies first album in 7 years came out this week, as well. I don't think they sound quite like they did way back when, but I do enjoy Ken Stringfellow's solo stuff, so I'll have to check it out.

Also, I haven't heard it yet, but everyone is raving about American Hi-Fi's new album.

And The Churchills have a new album coming out, as well.

And and The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema comes out in August, I think. I've already got a copy - it's good. Not AC Newman solo album-good, but it's good.

Last week on billboard.com, I read that Ric Ocasek has a new solo cd coming out this fall...Sept i think..

I'm really looking forward to the new All American Rejects cd due out soon...
