The FOFC Hockey Draft - Draft Underway
Since the playoff races are heating up, and my Flyers are shitting the bed, I need to find some other way to get my hockey fix. So without further wait...Welcome to the FOFC Hockey Draft!
In the time honored tradition of FOFC drafts created and primarily run by Maple Leafs, I will be running a Hockey draft. FOFC Hockey Draft This Draft will consist of 10 rounds. How To Play If you want to play, PM me. If there's a lot of interest, I'll randomly select ten players. By "randomly" I mean that after a day or so, I'll "randomly" pick whichever ten to twelve people I want. The draft will be conducted via the forum, in a separate draft thread. When it's your turn to draft, you post, ideally with a brief note about the reason for your choice. If you won't be around, you PM someone else your picks in advance to keep things moving. You will agree to this, and then not do it. This will slow up the draft and annoy everyone. You won't care, you selfish prick. The draft is a serpentine draft -- that the order reverses each round. Draft order will be determined before we start. How to win The fun here comes more from the draft itself than from actually winning, but just in case it matters: Once the draft is done, we'll hold a vote and let FOFC choose the winner. FOFC will pick someone shitty. They always do. To win you want to assemble the best team of players possible. So in the enforcer category, you do not want someone who can just fight, you want someone who can fight and also play hockey. The Rosters You will draft a "team" of nine players and one coach. The idea is to assemble the best possible roster, using your awesome knowledge of hockey as well as your crafty drafting skills. Trades are allowed, as long as they don't slow down the action (the idea is to keep things moving as quickly as possible). Your team will consist of ten players, at the following positions: Three Forwards In These Categories Power Forward: Sniper: Playmaker: Two Defensemen in These Catagories Offensive Defenseman: Lockdown Defensman: Five Other Positions Big Hitter (can be a forward or defenseman): Leader (Captain): Enforcer: Goalie: Head Coach: Additional rules thrown in to make it needlessly complicated 1) Once you draft a player from a team, you cannot draft another player from that team or any other team he played for the rest of the draft. 2) No player may be drafted more than once. 4) You are encouraged to write up a little piece on each of your picks to explain why you chose a player for that certain category. It could help you later on when it comes time for voting. 5) Since rule #1 was altered to include all the teams a player has played for...you are allowed to draft players from defunct teams. For example if you draft someone from Hartford, that does NOT eliminate Carolina. Same goes for Winnipeg and Phoenix...etc..etc. It only counts if they played for both Hartford and Carolina. Then both teams would be eliminated. A few notes The draft is open to everyone -- observers are welcome. Discussion of picks is encouraged. In general, it's considered very poor form to suggest picks during the draft -- the equivalent of being the guy who doesn't play poker but sits at the rail and shouts out to get attention. However, it will happen. If you're the sort of person who thinks you'd be really, really bothered by this, do yourself a favor and don't play. A final note If the idea of doing a just-for-fun draft strikes as you as stupid and/or pathetic, but you're the type of person who likes to post about text sims on an internet forum... well, you may want to give this a miss until your sense of irony develops a little more. OK, I'm in. I'm a southern boy, and my hockey knowledge pre-1992 is really spotty, but I'll do my best.

Not to take anything away from bsak.
But with all of the discussion around how to run the next draft - how does this get slung into the mix?

I didn't even know there were official discussions on how to run a draft. I like hockey, I know a few others who do...and just wanted to run a draft. Sorry if I am stepping on any toes here. |

As far as the teams that moved...I am going to have to do a bit of research but I am thinking that once you picked a Jet you couldn't take a Coyote same thing with Hartford and Carolina. But I am up for debate on that one because if you take say..Ron Francis with Hartford...on his play with Hartford would count. What do ya'll think? |

dola: I actually prefer these to be non-sports related. There are already drafts and teams for sports.

With all due respect to those doing drafts...I don't care if you do a draft parallel to mine. I wasn't doing this to steal anyone's thunder or whatever. I just thought it would be fun to do because there are a core group of hockey fans on this board and it could potentially be a fun draft for us plus we are nearing the stretch run of the regular season and playoffs will start soon.

Can you give me an example of how this works excatly? Does that mean, for example, if I drafted Petr Klima from the Red Wings, I couldn't draft any other players from the Wings, Oilers, Lightning, Penguins, and Kings? (Those are all the teams Petr Klima played for during his illustrious career)

That could get complicated... Does that mean that I could draft Brendan Shanahan (since he played for the Wings), or could I still draft St. Louis' Blues Brendan Shanahan? (Though if I drafted St. Louis' Blues Shanahan, I would then be precluded from drafting any Whaler, Devil, Wing, or Ranger.) I like first part about only one player per team, the second part could get restricting and would seem to reward people for drafting either young players or players who didn't move around a lot.

Does the change to rule 1 eliminate rule 3?
I mean if drafting a player eliminates all the teams he has played for then we should be able to use his entire career.

Wait a minute...so anytime we talk about hockey on here, we have people come in and say how the sport sucks, it's dying, it doesn't matter anymore in this country, etc...but the presence of this draft is somehow stepping on toes of all the other "drafts" done here?
I think everyone should just treat this hockey topic like any other and ignore it. I'll be in once there's some clarification on rules. Like Pumpy, my knowledge is limited to the last couple decades (not even, really) but at least my team has a history. |

You know, since there are only 10 spots to draft, I don't think it would really be that hard, unless you went and drafted the aforementioned Mike Sillinger. One player is probably not going to eliminate any more than 4 teams, and some players will only eliminate 1 or 2 teams. It may seem like it's going to be a difficult task, but I don't think it's going to be that hard. Tricky? Yes. Extraordinarily difficult? Probably not.

Honestly, who the hell cares? How many pointless threads are there on the front page? Are we running out of bandwidth? I had no interest at all in the literature draft, but I'm sure many, many others did, and I hope all those involved (drafting, commenting) had a great time. But I stayed out because I didn't care about it, just like I stay out of any other thread that doesn't interest me in any way. This particular draft is something I would like to be involved in, so anyone who thinks this is "too much" (and I have no idea what that even means) should stay out too. |

Is "Enforcer" meant to be purely a goon, or should it be a good player who could fight?

Also to better clarify things. If you choose Lindros...you could not choose someone like Mike Modano who played for both the Dallas and Minnesota North Stars. To use the Minnesota North Stars in this case, you would have to have someone who was not on the Dallas Stars. |

As far as the head coaches go...I think they should follow the same rules as the players in this draft, but I am open to suggestions.
Since this game will be tough to book keep...I am not going to draft. I'll keep track of the picks and the teams that each drafter has used. |

Maple Leafs, Lathum, Pumpy Tudors, Johnny93g, Oilers9911, TazFTW, Honolulu_Blue, and DeToxRox...Logan are you in? I was also going to wait for the left coasters too, I know a few of them like hockey. VTbub has expressed interest but said because of finals he could not draft until Monday. |

On a similar note, I may not be able to draft until Sunday afternoon. On Thursday afternoon I am heading off for the weekend and I don't think the place I am staying at has an internet connection. If so, I will be in fine shape. If not, not so much. If that's going to mess up plans for the draft, I'll bow out.
