College Football Recruiting (2012 Class) Discussion
National Signing Day for the 2011 class has come and gone. But the signing period doesn't end until April 1st. That doesn't mean that teams aren't already looking to next year's class.
Texas has already received one verbal, QB Connor Brewer from Scottsdale, AZ. The first Junior Days are this weekend, and this is a time when the Longhorns typically get quite a few verbal commitments for next year.

Arkansas already has 3 commitments, 2 in-state guys and Calvin Barnett, who is likely to be the #1 JUCO player in the country.

I think FSU is at 7 commits, with 6 of those being (way early) top-150 ranked. The one who's not is a top kicker.

Nothing yet for Michigan, but 2012 is a big year for in state talent and most of the kids considered the top of the class are defensive players that currently favor Michigan.

LSU has 5 commits, including one from Avery Johnson, who is Patrick Peterson's younger brother and is very likely to be a 5* receiver. Also taking advantage of a rare crop of good LB's instate w/ 3 commits for that position already.

MJ, see the 09 thread for Dean, that's who I was talking about. I knew he was a couple of years out back then. Hopefully his football IQ has climbed up a bit.

USC already has 4 commits:
DT Arik Armstead who is 6'8 280 and is likely to actually play OT for USC. He already has dozens of offers and has a good shot at being a 5 star player. Athlete Jayden Mickens, Athlete Darreus Rogers, and WR Jordan Payton. I imagine USC will fill up quicker than usual this year with the expected small class size.

I like how Eaglesfan classifed Mickens and Rogers as "athletes". It takes down the sting of having 15 scholarships available next year (tentatively) and having three of them ear-marked for WR's. That makes if 5 in two years and 8 in three years.
That being said, I don't expect USC to end up with all three. And for a little positive spin, Armstead will likely end up as the best OL in the nation. He is currently the younger brother of a current USC player And no information for anyone UCLA, we can't even get a DC here, much less any kids Last edited by MrBug708 : 02-08-2011 at 02:49 PM. |

Yeah, I get what you mean. That said, Bug's right, thems are WRs. It might be time to look at other positions, Lame. Armstead's a great get for you guys, and given his bro being at USC, it's pretty unlikely he won't follow through on that commitment.

In 2015 recruiting class news, QB David Sills is still committed to USC.

Oklahoma has two on board so far, for what will likely be another relatively small class. The first pick-up was Kyle Marrs, an offensive lineman from San Antonio who figures to be one of the top, if not the top, linemen in Texas.
And yesterday, Jenks, OK RB Alex Ross committed. At this point, he's ranked by most as the #2 player in Oklahoma, behind Barry Sanders Jr. Apparently, OU had Sanders in for one of the Junior Days but didn't offer. They seem to like Ross and Jonathan Gray, one of the top backs in Texas, better. I don't see them taking more than one RB, though, due to current depth, but some think Ross might end up at linebacker, as he already has some nice size. So I'm guessing Gray is still on the wish list. |

Michigan just offered LB Royce Jenkins-Stone. He's a Rivals 250 Watch kid. Plays at the UM Pipeline Cass Tech and ought to be our first verbal I'd imagine.

ND gets its first committment in CB/S Tee Shepard out of Fresno.
We also have an RB at the HS that is on Scout - currently an NR, but there are BCS verbals from Massachusetts that are NR. Interest from BC, UConn and CAA teams right now. (The other reason I like him - 50/50 he'll play lacrosse instead of running track this spring.) |

It looks like Minnesota will have another offensive tackle who at least has an offer list comparable to Seantrel Henderson this year. Jonah Pirsig of Blue Earth, Minnesota is 6-9 300 and in addition to a Minnesota offer he's recieved offers from Ohio State, Michigan and Auburn. He says he thinks he'll be getting one from USC soon too.

He still plans on taking all his visits... including his first one to ND next month. So yes, huge if he stays considering we have 0 JR, 1 SO, and 2 FR CB's, but I'm not penciling him into the lineup yet. Maybe USC will even offer him a spot as a WR.

Texas picked up the commitment of stud RB Johnathan Gray. Last season he ran for 3,223 yards and broke a 57 year old state record with 59 touchdowns. In the state title game, he ran for 325 yards and eight touchdowns.
Hopefully between him and incoming freshman Malcom Brown, the Horns can get their running game back on track over the next couple of seasons.

Gray's a good pickup. With limited scholarships this class, OU pulled off of him when they got Ross, which disappointed me because I would've loved to see them get both. Just a little too much depth at that position right now, though.
I'm by no means an expert, but based on the film I saw, I was more impressed with Gray than Malcolm Brown. |

OH LB Joe Bolden committed to Michigan. It isn't the deepest LB class in Ohio and OSU doesn't need LB's but UM has the two best from the state now.

Washington got their QB today, as local stud Jeff Lindquist committed in person to Coach Sark. He'd narrowed his choices early on to Washington and Stanford.
Scout.com has him as a 4-star recruit and their #13 QB in the 2012 class. |

4* MI LB James Ross is apparently going to commit to Michigan tomorrow. That games Michigan 4* OLB Joe Bolden, 4* MLB James Ross, 4* MLB Royce Jenkins-Stone and 4*MLB Kaleb Ringer (According to Scout since Rivals has no rankings yet).
Bolden and Ross are recruited for OLB while RJS and Ringer are inside. Going to be the best LB haul in the Nation I'd assume. |

The fact that OSU is likely dealing with major issues with the NCAA and Tressel might be gone because of it isn't hurting either.

Right now the recruiting he is doing is better then anything at Michigan since probably the 2003 class. Hoke was the best recruiter on Lloyd's staff and when he went the recruiting got a little lazier. Lloyd only recruited kids with interest in Michigan. In the case of Oju, he said in March he was not considering Michigan. Now here we are in May and he is a Michigan commitment. The entire staff is filled with excellent recruiters and it obviously is Michigan which helps but the staff never stops. If we had gotten Harbaugh the rumor was Hoke's next stop was UCLA. I really think he would have been able to do wonders for you guys had he made it there. |

Michigan is apparently adopting the Texas philosophy of filling most of the class up early because there are apparently 2 kids, with a possibility of a 3rd, committing this week. UM would be up to 13 commitments in class of about 22 right now, though most expect it to end up a full 25.

He could have been our next coach. My point was more that recruiting tends to pick up at the start of a regime change as there is something good to sell

And I totally understand that as it is a common thing. I am just saying that what Hoke is doing is especially impressive because he and his staff are going at recruiting in a way Michigan hasn't seen in probably a decade, but honestly most likely never. The new staff angle plays a huge role, but just based on reports from mods on Rivals/Scouts none of them have ever seen a staff at Michigan go full bore like they have. |

"Do you want to play defense and start right away? Boy, do we have an offer for you!" A defensive minded coach should have a very easy time grabbing live bodies for a team that was that bad on D. It does help a lot that he's a Michigan guy not in just the sense that he has been there, but he's fully embracing the tradition of the school which is what RR seemed to ignore. When Stoops went to OU they said he totally emphasized the tradition of OU and helped use that to sell recruits.

Michigan gets its first for 2013 and it's a huge one. Potential 5* QB Shane Morris out of Warren, MI committed today. We won't end up with a top notch QB in 2012 (Figured once we struck out on Pike) but this kid may be the best player in the state already. If he goes to camps a 5* isn't out of the realm of possibility.

As nice as the defensive commits have been, I'm still waiting for the offensive ones to come in as well. The 2011 class was small in terms of numbers offensively.

Yeah. Sounds like Ron Thompson, a TE/WR out of Southfield could drop at any time. He and Funchess can both split wide but we still need a legit WR. Aaron Burbridge was considered the biggest MSU lean of the FHH kids but with the other two now at UM Burbridge may end up there but the rumor is his grades are a mess. We still need an RB and 3 more OL on that side though as well. |
