Fixing the Dolphins: FOF2k7 Quick Dynasty
This is a fast dynasty to help pass the time while waiting for the first patch so I can resume my "serious" career.
Settings: 1) I'll be using Real Players (using Yabanci's file) with X-factor turned on. 2) No House rules restrictions. Sign/re-sign/franchise/hire hookers, whatever it takes. I'm trying to make the Fins good again. 3) This will be a season to season dynasty. I won't be doing gameplans or depth charts (except for extreme circumstances where I strongly differ with the recommendation, call it the Al Davis rule). Mostly I'll be focusing on Free Agency and roster management. 4) The only house rule is a forced one, which I'm sure will be fixed in the first patch. I cannot renegotiate until I am below the cap, so I will have to release players first. I'll have to keep a good eye on next year's cap figures to avoid this.

Major Pre-season Transactions:
Signed FS Ken Irvin, FS Lance Schulters, SS Justin Lucas, and CB Denard Walker to help out the miserable secondary situation. Also brought in G Brent Smith for OL depth. Let go of a ton of people (Yabanci's file gave me 74 players to start) including Brock Berlin, Gerald Riggs Jr., Travis Minor, Marcus Vick, Yeremiah Bell, Lee Suggs, and Manny Wright. Here is my roster for the 2006 season: Code:

Looking forward to seeing you turn them around.
By the way, if you're looking for a cheap, young WR who won't drop passes, look for Jovon Bouknight. He'll either be with the Carolina Panthers or in the FA list if he's in the file.

Roster Thoughts:
QB's - The good news is Culpepper isn't rated nearly as bad as he's played this season. Bad news is I have him for 7 years. Harrington and Lemon are worthless. Backs - Ronnie Brown looks really good and I have him for 5 years. In this case, it's a good thing. Not much depth and I badly need a good FB. Receivers - Chambers and Booker are decent starters, and I have alright potential for Welker and Hagan. McMichael is a stud. Offensive Line - Wow! I got real lucky here. This situation isn't nearly as bad as in real life. Apparently Jeno James is one of the best Guards in football history. Who knew? Also, I extended Hadnot for another year. Defensive Line - Great starters, but lacking in depth. Extended Holliday for two more years. Linebackers - I love you, Zach. The OLB's suck, though. Secondary - Ugly, but not as bad as it was before my FA signings. I only have those guys for one year, so this group will be an offseason priority.

Amusingly, the Superbowl ended up being a rematch between Pittsburgh and Seattle. Seattle won 30-15 behind MVP Matt Hasselbeck. By the way, if you want to know how a favorite player is doing in this dynasty, let me know.

2007 Offseason
*After missing out on two great Head Coaches, I still manage to snag Blaine Begian. He's only Average in Discipline, but Good or better in everything else. *I send promising DT Rodrique Wright to the Summer League. *I actually lower ticket prices as an apology for the worst season in Dolphins history. *I lose Keith Traylor and Kevin Carter to retirement. Ouch. Also retiring this year for other teams are Warrick Dunn, Aaron Glenn, Brett Favre, Ty Law, Brad Johnson, Junior Seau, Tiki Barber, Michael Strahan, Keenan McCardell, and Bryant Young. *Patrick Ramsey and Steve McNair are the best QB's in FA. But I have the #1 overall pick in the draft which means I can take Brady Quinn. Woot!

Free Agency
I renegotiate until I have about $24 million cap room left. Among the extensions is a 5 year deal for Vernon Carey. He's not very good, but he's better than every Tackle in Free Agency. (This is no doubt due to better AI on the part of computer teams). Week 2 - With $23 million, I make 8 offers this wextensions is a 5 year deal for Vernon Carey. He's not very good, but he's better than every Tackle in Free Agency. eek, aiming to improve my secondary, my OLB's, and replace losses on the DL. Week 3 - CB Deltha O' Neal, CB Nate Clements, OLB Nick Greisen, and S Kevin Kaesviharn all agree to deals. Great start. All of these were dire need situations. Week 4 - OLB EJ Henderson signs on to round out our starting LB group. No rejections yet. Week 5 - Neither of my Fullbacks were any good last year, so I picked up Mike Alstott for a 2 year deal. He's decent but I'll be looking for someone in the draft for the long term. Week 6 - Safety Michael Lewis signs on to provide more depth in the Secondary. Week 7 - I lose out on a backup OLB to the Bengals. No big deal. Week 8 - Nothing Week 9 - G Floyd Womack is my only real superstar pickup. He was 1st team Guard last year and signed with us for $12.27 million over 4 years. DE Bertrand Berry helps fill out the DL, but I'll be looking in the draft for that as well. And that's it for my FA season. I sim through the rest and prepare for the draft.

Doh! I didn't even check the draft order. Dallas won the tiebreaker so they had the 1st pick. No Brady Quinn for me. Here;s the draft...
1(2) - Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech I didn't like either Leak or Brohm, and Calvin was the only guy left worth taking. This wasn't a major need position, but I picked for value. 2(2) - Chase Ortiz, DE, TCU I loved this guy's bars and he is Very Underrated, so I took him probably a bit too early. I passed up on Brian Leonard, who looks like he might makre it to the 3rd round. 3(2) - Cory Anderson, FB, Tennessee I missed out on Leonard, but this guy looks really good. He's listed as very underrated and looks to be a great blocking FB. 4(2) - Mike Kolodzej, T, Michigan I needed depth at Tackle, and this guy looks like he could be a sleeper. QB's Jordan Palmer, Kevin Kolb, Jamarcus Russell, and Drew Stanton are available but all listed as Very Overrated. Looks like I'll be stuck with Culpepper for another year. 5(2) - Jordan Hill, DT, Arizona State Looks like he could be a decent run stopper eventually. 6(2) - Trent Edwards, QB, Stanford I didn't interview this guy but his bars look good and he had decent combine numbers. Worth a shot. 7(2) - Cameron Jensen, MLB, BYU Zach can't play forever and needs a decent backup. This guy is listed as Underrated and might be able to do it.

Grossman does not look to be very good. My scout rates him at 34/37 and he threw 15 picks (against 12 TD's) last year. The Bears signed Steve McNair in the offseason who is 41/41 and will likely start the year.

Good news. We have a 68 Power rating, 5th best in the NFL, to start the season. Also, I'm pleased with the numbers for Calvin Johnson and Cory Anderson coming out of camp. The rest are a mixed bag. Hopefully they can develop into something.

Blah. Well, we got a little better, but still didn't do as good as I expected. Culpepper isn't playing horribly but he wasn't able to get the ball to the two talented rookies this year. There's no reason Johnson and Anderson should have such low numbers. If there's a stud QB next season, I'm trading up to get him, whatever it takes.
LJ Shelton was 1st Team Tackle, Jeno James was 2nd Team G and Ronnie Brown was 2nd team RB. Code:

Carolina beat Cincinnatti 21-17 in the Super Bowl behind MVP Jake Delhomme. During the regular season, Peyton Manning threatened Marino's passing yardage record, coming up 189 short with 4873 yards.

*My OC and DC contracts were up, so I tried to bring in some better guys. It was pretty difficult because the owner won't let me spend anything. I feel like tight ass Joe Robbie bought the team again. The guys I eventually get are decent, but I wanted better.
*I send last year's 2nd round draft pick DE Chase Ortiz to the summer league. *It's the end of an era in Miami, as MLB Zach Thomas announces his retirement. It's going to suck when this happens in RL. He's my 2nd favorite all time Dolphin, behind Danny of course. *DT Dan Wilkinson and De Bertrand Berry also retire. *Apparently Olindo Mare got hurt in the final week last year. He is Out with Impaired Vision and his return status is unknown. This is obviously a bug. Mare clearly has impaired vision this season in real life, but he's still playing. *Other retirees were Isaac Bruce, Corey Dillon, Terry Glenn, Tony Gonzalez, Jamal Lewis, John Lynch, Tom Nalen, and Mike Vanderjagt. *There is an absolute stud QB available in the draft. A guy that could be the next Marino. I'm trying to trade for the #1 overall pick, but Jerry Jones is being a prick. I've offered three 1st round picks, and still a no. I really want this guy, so I keep pushing, and they finally accept the trade of three 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder for the #1 pick. I may have just made a Herschel Walker/Ricky Williams type trade, but maybe not. Oh well, at least I'll have extra cap space the next three years. This dude better be good. *Daunte Culpepper has been released. I'll eat $1 million this year and $4 million next, but that's nothing compared to what he was due to make. Over the next 5 years, his contract ranged from $6 million to $10 million.

Two things. As for Zach, I am with you. He is also my 2nd favorite behind Marino. I met Zach his rookie year and got his autograph. Seems like only yesterday.
Also, great pick up on the next Marino. But you gotta change his name. Haag? Maybe Marino Jr. ??? Ha Ha.

Beck went undrafted but was signed by the Falcons for a 1 year minimum deal. He lasted the whole year as a backup but did not get any playing time. They have not re-signed him yet.

Week 1 - After contract extensions and renegotiations, I have $13.3 million for free agents. Among those I released: QB Trent Edwards, RB Najeh Davenport, and S Renaldo Hill.
Week 2 - MLB Robert Thomas is signed to be Zach's replacement. He's not nearly as good as Zach but was the best FA MLB available. Week 3 - I lose out on a backup OLB, but get a very nice Guard in Carlisle Cooper for 3 years, $12.96 million. Week 4 - CB Keiwan Ratliff signs for 2 years, $2.4 million. He'll be a decent backup, but might challenge for the starting job. Week 5 - I miss out on a backup DT, but I get a backup Safety Marquand Manuel for $2.05 million over 2 years, and backup OLB Ben Leber for $1.92 million over 2 years. I also decide to extend DE Robert Geathers for an extra 3 years, since there were no decent DE's available. That's it for my FA moves. I sim the rest of the weeks and prepare for the draft.

And here's the draft....
1(1) - Alex "Marino Jr." Haag, QB, California The next Marino. He may be short, but he's smart and his only weakness is Timing (Calvin Johnson is maxed out in Adjust to Ball) and Kick Holding (who cares.) 2(13) - Kenny Price, T, Louisiana-Monroe Instead of a DT or MLB, I try to get a guy that could be a future starter at Tackle. Price is a project (only 19% developed), but is scouted as Underrated and I really like his bars. 3(13) - Nicky Farmer, MLB, Miami (FL) This was a guy I almost took in the 2nd round, so I was ecstatic he was still available. There were three MLB's that looked nice, but Nicky had the best combine numbers. 4(13) - Austin Turner, DT, Clemson He's listed as Overrated but is the best DT left. I badly need depth here, so as long as this guy can be a decent backup I'll be happy. 5(13) - Christian McKnight, OLB, Oklahoma State This guy has the potential to be a godo run stopper, which might be needed since Robert Thomas is a step down from Zach in that area. 6(13) - Glen Murray, G, Clemson Scouted at Underrated, he has some interesting potential. I'm set at Guard for a while, so this guy will have time to develop. 7(13) - Thomas Durham, K, Oklahoma State I need a Kicker in case Mare has been blinded for life, which seems to be the case. This guy isn't that good, but better than all the FA Kickers left. And the team distribution of these last 4 picks is completely coincidental. I'll be watching what Dallas does with all those picks I sent them. This year with 1(13) they took LT Greg Buckner, who looks really good and could start immediately.

Late Free Agency
I sign QB Kris Conway, an undrafted rookie out Kentucky, solely because he's maxed out in Kick Holding. I extend backup TE Kris Mangum for another year. He played pretty good to spell McMichael for 4 games last year and has an 86 in Long Snapping. I sign RB Fred Taylor to be a backup. He suffered a serious injury that strongly hurt his ratings, but he's a good Special Teams player. After Late FA ends, I take a look at the undrafted Rookie FA's and pick the bext 7 guys that might have a chance to surprise me and make the team. Included in this group is another Kicker who will battle for the starting job.

Undrafted FA's that made the team include CB Mel Podmore, OLB Vincent Lindsay (who beat out draftee McKnight), MLB Skip Davidson, DT Jessie Lofton, C Zack Lepalme, and QB Kris Conway.
And here are your 2008 Miami Dolphins (Note: I will override the AI decision to start Harrington).... Code:

We make modest improvements this year, and barely miss the playoffs on a tiebreaker.
Haag threw alot of picks, but he did a good job of getting the ball to Calvin Johnson, which Culpepper notoriously failed at. Hopefully this kid will improve next year. We're a strong QB away from a SB run. Award winners this year include 1st team OLB EJ Henderson and 2nd Team RB Ronnie Brown. Code:

Offseason notes:
*No staff changes this year. *TE Kris Mangum, RB Fred Taylor, T LJ Shelton, and FB Mike Alstott have retired. Only Shelton is a serious concern for me. *Other retirements around the league include Ronde Barber (legend), Joey Galloway, Trent Green, Keyshawn Johnson, Sam Madison, Steve McNair, Terrell Owens, Patrick Surtain, and Charles Woodson. *I increased all ticket prices, but still have the 4th cheapest tickets in the league. *It is the end of the Joey Harrington era in Miami. Stay tuned for details on the parade.

Free Agency
Week 1 - After renegotiations, extensions, and cuts I have $15.2 million in cap space available. Among those cut are MLB Robert Thomas, who was no replacement for Zach last year and lost his roster spot to two rookies. Week 2 - DE Reggie Hayward turns down my offer and signs with Seattle. I finally have a decent Kicker in Lawrence Tynes. He's rated 67/67 and I got him for $2.77 million over 2 years. Week 3 - DE Darrian Scott and FB Dan Kreider sign with us. Both will provide good depth and Kreide rmight possibly start. Week 4 - DT Jason Ferguson, opne of the best players available in FA, signs with us for $7.82 million over 2 years. Week 5 - Maurice Williams will fill in for LJ Shelton. Williams is a terrific pass blocker, but Ronnie will not find much running room his way. I also sign CB Kelly Herndon, who will compete in a three way battle for the two CB spots. Week 6 - Boss Bailey will be the latest in the line to replace Zach. Nicky Farmer had a nice rookie season, but I'm always looking for more. That's all for FA this year. I proceed to the draft.

Good news. We are the #3 team in the preseason power ratings.
Bad news. I don't know why. Haag hasn't improved any from year 1 and the team hasn't improved much from last year's squad. I suppose the cohesion will help out, but we'll see. Here are your 2009 Miami Dolphins... Code:

Woops! Here's the draft info.... 2(22) Marshal Torres, DT, Tennessee 3(21) Leon Bennett, S, Oklahoma 4(20) Steven Sipe, C, Nicholls State 5(22) Rusty Jordan, DE, West Virginia 6(21) Calvin Hughes, T, Texas Tech 7(20) Chuck Kreitzer, TE, Torres has the potential to be a solid DT. I'll send him to the summer league next season to help him along. The rest of these guys were selected to fill out the roster in backup slots. I don't expect much out of any of them. 7th round pick Kreitzer actually held out. I tell him to take a hike and found a decent backup TE in late FA.

I also forgot late FA...
I only made two signings. OLB Dan Cody will be an immediate starter and TE Jerame Tuman will be a decent backup.

Well certainly not the season I expected. We started off really strong, but faded late like a typical Dolphins team. We beat the Jets in week 11 to go 6-4 and were in position for a playoff spot. Then everything fell apart and we lost 5 straight.
Haag played better, but he's still holding this team back. He gets one more year to earn my confidence. Code:

*I retain Head Coach Blaine Begian in a fierce bidding war. This may seem odd given team performance, but he's a really good coach and I'm gonna give him another three years to get this thing going.
*I also hire a new Scout, who unfortunately gives me pretty much the same outlook on Haag. He's rated 36/63 now, so he could still be a decent QB. Just not Marino Jr. *I have 47 players on contract to start the year, with $9 million in cap space available. Time to get rid of some dead weight and make some deals. *As promised, DT Marshal Torres gets a trip overseas to the summer league. *DT Jason Ferguson and CB Kelly Herndon have retired. Other league retirements include T Willie Anderson (Legend), RB Edgerrin James, RB Travis Henry, K Jason Elam, DE Jevon Kearse, OLB Joey Porter, T Walter Jones, and T Jonathan Ogden.
