Richmond Ironclad - Season One (2017)

This will be edited several times in the interest of space - I'm going to keep this to one thread, with only key updates. This will make it easier for me to provide 5-year updates, if nothing else. Enjoy.

Tried to build a solid defense through a surprisingly fruitful expansion draft... some of these high-priced guys won't make the cut, unless I fail during FA and the draft - but a good base is in place.

Free Agency - 2017

Well, with one FA allowed for the 1st 10 weeks - there are a lot of good people to consider. The Ironclad will be built on defense, though, and will pursue LB Jesse Grant of Colorado Springs, a beast of a Penn State graduate. The 6 year vet should be the backbone of the "D". Grant signs in week 5 of the process, a 4-year, 26.48 million contract.

T Kenny Cedeno and QB Randal Nelson (diamond in the rough!) signed in week 12 (Nelson at the expense of briefly former QB Hamilton), and C Everett Mahoney joined in week 13. There's the FA limit... on we go!

2017 Amateur Draft

Amateur Draft Report:

Rnd 1 - Butch Nunez, DT, East Carolina
Rnd 2 - Ricky Siragusa, S, South Carolina
Rnd 3 - D.J. Gardner, G, Oregon
Rnd 4 - J.R. Wheeler, RB, Bethune Cookman
Rnd 5 - Kent Alba, DT, Auburn
Rnd 6 - Kenyon Pearson, LB, Ohio State
Rnd 7 - Moe Driscoll, WR, Auburn

It was easy to address my needs, which were everything. Again I started with defense, but only because I had no good offense worthy of my #1 choice.

Time to sign a bunch of scrubs and head to TC.

Training Camp 2017

Well, the good news is there were absolutely no draft busts... and #1 pick Butch Nunez should be a stud at DT.

The bad news - my expertise took a bad dive after t-camp. Time to work on that cohesion.

2017 Exhibition Season

Won the 1st game in franchise history, but finished 1-3. Hopefully not a sign of things to come, as I expect even my 1st year expansion team to contend. Set your goals high, or expect mediocrity.

2017 Regular Season

2017 Regular Season Schedule

Week 16 Manchester Ice Weasels W, 30-20 29,500 6,600
Week 17 Washington Redskins W, 30-16 93,200 4,600

Well, 9-7 in the 1st season - and no clue how it happened. On the bad side - all it really did was hurt my draft position, as there was a 4-way tie for the division lead - and I came in 3rd and missed the playoffs.

Stats of Note

Randal Nelson, QB: 3398 yds., 53.3%, 18/16, 75.2 rating
J.R. Wheeler, RB: 980 yds., 4.6 avg, 6 TD

Rusty Floyd, WR: 846 yds., 6 TD
Xavier Barrett, WR: 819 yds., 7 TD

Expansion Draft
The results of my Expansion Draft. Tried to get cheap scrubs, nothing real special. The only excitment that was had was when the computer somehow made two choices for me, do not know how. It did not really effect me.

Free Agent Stages
Well I am a sucker for a good lines, be it the O or D Line. I targeted a stud DT Pat Rogers, and he came to me. The deal was over three years for $29.56M. My three signings in the last 10 stages included 2 allright O Linemen. C Everett Mahoney ($4.74M / 3yrs) and Dale Nagel ($3.03M /2yrs). I also signed QB Bubba Barker ($7.74M/3yrs), a decent backup and possible starter if I do not find anyone in the draft.

2017 Draft
Well witht he first pick I was tempted to draft the Stud RB, Kerry Carr. But I stood by my philopshy of building teams at the line and I drafted DE Steven Mueller. In the 2nd rd I took an excellent guard. At round three I eyed 3 players, and lucky for me I drafted all three in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds.

Rnd 1 DE Steven Mueller, Syracuse
Rnd 2 G Patrick O'Donnel, Alabama
Rnd 3 G Jamie Caniff, Syracuse
Rnd 4 RB Jerry Crawford, Purdue
Rnd 5 QB Kevin O'Neal, Indiana
Rnd 6 WR Jose Zeppelin, Stonehill
Rnd 7 WR Rufus Jamison, Baylor

Proceeded to sign a lot of undrafted free agents to 1 yr contracts. Signed a good amount until my team had 70 players until training camp.

2017 Regular Season
Well it was a great start, 3 wins in a row. Mostly by good play of my defense and special teams. Within those 3 games i had two defensive TDs and 2 kickoff returns for scores. My offense was lacking. Well I finished 6-10(237/333) , and there was nothing really special except that I had a decent defense, especially secondary. None of my playes recieved any awards.

The Richmond Royals took players that they felt capable of building the foundation of their great franchise in the expansion draft...at least with the first 6 or 7 picks then they took some scrubs.

We set our Tick prices at:
$65, $75, $90, $125, $0, $4,000, and $225,000
compared to the Redskins at
$81, $81, $103, $157, $0, $5,000, and $255,000

The fans of Richmand won't see too many changes here any time soon.

After the expansion draft, we are offered a 5th round pick for TE Jared Myers, a player we actually liked out of the expansion draft, but the choice between him for one year and someone younger for 2 or 3 is an easy choice, trade done.

In Free Agency I target the QB to lead us through the first 5 years while I can afford one, Vincent Snyder, a vet out of Oakland. in week 3 he signs for 4 years, 67.16 millioin.

2nd half of FA sees me target an OL anchor in G Darrin Dorsett and a decent RB and CB, Jessie Reynolds and Martin Stephens respectively. I sign them all
Dorsett 3/16.38
Reynolds 4/32.17
Stephens 3/15.55

I pick up a decent 2nd year tackle named Kenny Cedeno after the FA period for 1/1.13

DRAFT:
1 Ronald Mathis T North Texas 6-6 319
2 Tracy Leake FB San Diego State 5-11 226
3 Lamar Kamnik P Davidson 6-2 234
4 Greg Keith G Michigan State 6-3 333
5 Anthony Kidd WR Louisiana-Monroe 5-10 200
5 Corey Nastasi RB Ohio State 5-7 201
6 Mitch Corbett WR Morris Brown 5-10 199
7 Benjamin Garrison K Hawaii 5-11 182

Not what I was expecting to take in this draft, but that's how it fell

After the draft I am offered a 3rd round pick for 6th round pick Corbett, this is too far fetched and is declined.

I sign 1 year deals until I hit 70, go to camp and trim.

I win my first ever game 23-17 against the Vikings in OT.

Wk 4 sees DT Austin Drake go to IR and I pick up DT Ike Wells to replace him on a 1 year deal.

I go on to finish 3-13 as the other expansion team, the Swamp Ducks finish 9-7 and make the playoffs.

The Super Bowl sees Portland trounce Cleveland 38-9.

I win no awards and Herb gives me scores of:
0, 29, 51, 70 and a total of 32. Thanks Herb.

FYI, these don't have to be that detailed . . .

Richmond Pond Frogs 2017

Now announcing your 2017 Richmond Pond Frogs.

Ap Wire: This just annouced after the demise of Federal Express due to a long and involved worker's strike, Washington owner Daniel Snyder has renamed the Redskins the Washinton Senators. It is believed that even though there was pressure from many activists to do what is right and decent, he changed the name simply for the license revenue. Unexplainably however, the Senators are still not charging a seat license.

With the first pick in the expansion draft the Pond Frogs select Jones, Ronnie, DE. Said owner Ctown-Fan, "I believe that Ronnie will be a hugh contributor to the team this year."

Is it me or did anyone else really want to draft Jumbo Money?

In the fifth week of free agency the Pond Frogs are glad to announce the signing of Darrin Dorsett out of Purdue. A fourth round draft pick in his fifth year of experince, he is just glad to have made the team!

In week eleven put in bids for:
Alanzo Flannery K 3 years 5.45Mil
Joey Hogg C 3 years 17.91 mil
Vincent Snyder QB 4 50.64 mil (I can't belive this guy hasn't gotten an offer).

If I don't get snyder there are still several good qbs left in the pool and not much else.

Week 12 both snyder and flannery signed quickly, good to have them aboard. Hogg signed with San Diego.
Put in 3 year 3.54mil bid on C Everett Mahoney
He snapps that up the next week and I am done with the FA period!

Into the Draft . . .
And with the first selection the Pond Frogs select Vinny Hitchcock WR out of Jacksonville.
Rnd 2 - Sedrick Bell, T, Harvard
Rnd 3 - Robbie Osborne, P, Tennessee - Martin
Rnd 4 - Mario Epstein, S, Iowa
Rnd 5 - Seth Schroeder, RB, Washington State
Rnd 6 - Matt Schneiter, LB, North Carolina
Rnd 7 - Gus Emerson, WR, Rice

Already an AI Dilemna The number 2 pick in the draft QB Alvin Schurlock has been cut by the Greenville team. I will not sign him, however! I pick up my 70 (all rookies after the draft!). And am ready to go to camp.
Post Camp Numbers:
Dorsett: 66/73
Snyder: 65/86
Flannery:88/88
Mahoney: 40/52
Hitchcock:60/82
Bell:42/75
Osborne: 66/66
epstien:28/51
Schroder: 42/64
Schneiter:33/69
Emerson: 30/55
This was an excellent draft.

Well, we got off to an excting start this year, going three and one until injuries decimated our offensive line (man, just becasue I am from Cleveland). We ended the season with a record of 7-9(292-352) although the official record shows that we were 8-8 (292-352). We faced a little VOODOO magic against Greensboro which altered history a little (I reverted back to the score before the crash). Seattle beat Tampa Bay 24-23 for the SuperBowl. Overall I was very impressed with the team for their expansion year.

"Coach, how did we have such a good first year?"
"well, by borrowing from the esteemed Morgado's playbook, we ran a 65run offense which helped us to control the ball and keep the games close. On defense we mixed up the alignments enough to keep our players fresh which allowed us to use more talented players that have a lower endurance. Maybe an off season conditioning program will help."

Key Stats
Snyder QB 51.1%, 3799yds, 16td, 14int, 75.6rtg
Massicot RB 199att, 827yrd, 5td
Hitchcock wr 89c,1595yds, 5td
Flannery k 31/37, 25/25
Westfall 29t, 15.5s (and this guy has no ratings)
Jones DE 63t, 6s (see I was right in the pre-season)
Awards
Offensive Rookie of the Year Hitchcock
2nd Team WR Hitchcock

According to Hitchcock, "you haven't seen anything yet, we young and we will mature into a force in this league. With Snyder tossing me the rock we will be undefeatable in the future. if you have any more questions please see my agent."

Ctown-Fan had this to say: "I am please with my players performance this year, however i would have been happier if we hadn't lost to that freak dan snyder in the last game of the season. I am going to get that bastard if it is the last thing i do alive!"

Strong words, which hopefully can be turned into stronger actions next season.

"In the final analysis of the season we go to fof expert herb. Well,"

Herb:"43, 43, 70, 59, 26"

That is a man of few words and many numbers folks. . . see you next year."

Richmond Pond Frogs 2018

Ap Wire- After the 2017 season team GM Ctown collapsed from exhaustion. He claims it was from all the late hours he spent developing the expansion team. He is resting comfortable in his off-season home near Cleveland.

Hitchock let stardom get to him and saw a dramatic decrease in his future potential. Hopefully his rookie ratings will get him through another year!

Canned scout and Hired Jon Buckley to a 5 year 820,000 deal.

Designated Ronnie Jones DE as a franchise player. He then resigned 20.38 for two years.

Offer Nathan El Nino (s) 4 28.61mil signed in week six

Johnny Matthews LB $15.72 mil., 3 yrs. week 11
Kris Cooley LB$7.83 mil., 2 yrs. week 11
No one else worth signing that would replace a player I could re-up from my own team.

Amateur Draft Report:
Rnd 1 - K.C. Borders, T, Kentucky
Rnd 2 - Alonzo Buckner, DT, Arkansas
Rnd 3 - Colin Duffy, QB, Miami, Florida
Rnd 4 - Mario Witt, CB, Colgate
Rnd 5 - Neil Paswater, QB, Wisconsin
Rnd 6 - Thomas Bronson, RB, Washington State
Rnd 7 - Lewis Sullivan, LB, Northwestern

After Camp Results

Colin Duffy 20/56
Mario Witt 24/44
Neil Paswater 34/46
Thomas Bronson 38/38
Lewis Sullivan 9/44

Week 9 Things just keep getting worse on the injury front . . .at one point in the season we had thirteen injured players. Week nine, however was the worst up to that point . . .
Injury Report:
Kris Cooley, LB - Sprained Neck, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Corey Ligeski, S - Sprained Neck, full strength in 3-5 Weeks
Kurt Altman, CB - Concussion, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Nathan El Nino, S - Bruised Ribcage, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Everett Mahoney, C - Turf Toe, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Calvin McDonald, T - Broken Finger, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Vinny Hitchcock, WR - Bruised Ribcage, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Sedrick Bell, T - Turf Toe, full strength in 0-2 Weeks
Bryce Barnes, S - Torn Thumb Ligament, full strength in 2019
Duane Sutton, C - Torn Calf Muscle, full strength in 2-3 Months
Mario Witt, CB - Hip Pointer, full strength in 2-3 Months

What a season, we finished nine and seven (402-366). We lost to Washington twice, and I must admit I am pretty unhappy about that and, despite losses to NYG and Arizona in the last two weeks, we made the playoffs as a wild card team. Next stop a visit to Atlanta . . .

Wild Card (9-7) RIC v. (11-5) ATL
Things are loooking bleak. We are down 28-18 with 8:59 to play. . . Atlant just downed a punt at our 1 yard line . . . Things stay that way and we loose by the same score.

Super Bowl: St. Louis beat New England 17-14 in an exciting game.

Richmond Ironclad, Season Two (2018)

The Ironclad have pursued an up-and coming 37 year old scout, Allen Behrendt. Behrendt was lured from the Miami Dolphins with a lucrative 5-year, 1.2 mill/per deal. Ratings are: VG/VG/VG/G/VG/VG/G/VG.

Ticket prices have been raised significantly to increase the 'ol profit margin, but are still a significant bargain over demographic rival Washington.

Free Agency

The Ironclad have a free agency coup and outbid several teams for 6-year CB Albert Lathon. Lathon is signed to a 5 year, 58 million dollar deal - and should bring immediate respectability to a previously horrible secondary.

Weeks 11-20 welcome WR Mitchell Coleman, LB Conrad Ahn and G Carlos McKelvey.

2018 Amateur Draft

Amateur Draft Report:

Rnd 1 - Levon Hicks, WR, Arizona State
Rnd 2 - Jim Weaver, RB, Mississippi State
Rnd 3 - Lee Jeffrey, C, Houston
Rnd 4 - Matthew Murphy, K, Arizona
Rnd 5 - Jim Randle, TE, Western Kentucky
Rnd 6 - Fernando Britton, P, Texas A&M
Rnd 7 - Casey Bryant, LB, Boston College

I needed to address the offense, and if his potential holds Weaver will be an absolute steal in round 2. Perhaps he can take some pressure off of the QB. Time to fill out the roster and head to TC.

2018 Training Camp

Training camp sucked, but no draft busts. In the interest of time (mine and yours), these season posts will simply include compilations of the important 5 year updates - otherwise this will take forever.

7-9 in second season, a step back mainly due to SEVERE and FREQUENT injuries. This was a bad, bad year - perhaps it's time to get a new coach that has a better injury rating.

Note: A more brief synopsis in the interest of time has been moved back to my 1st post.

2018 Exhibition Season
I go 3-1, look like a decent ball team, my onlyh loss is where I get shutout. It seems like if my team scores I do well and play a close game, if not my team goes to hell. Only One major injury, and that was too my starting RB Jerry Crawford, this keeps him out for the first quarter of the season.

2018 Regular Season
Well things start out well for the Voodoo Chiles, going 3-1 in the first 4 games. The signing of QB Jay WInslett has helped ignite some offense. Even with RB Crawford out, RBs Prill and Phillips pick up the pace. Well I wished the next 8 games went the same way but I go 1-7, with numerous injuries to my DTs. Some of this games were close but my team was to young to know how to win those games. Luckily the last 4 games go well, I go 3-1, and lose to the Eagles, the league's best team at 15-1. Overall I finish 7-9 (370/389). I am very pleased, I was not expecting this. I defeated all the teams I should of, so that is a good sign. Here are my results

WR Cris Snyder had a outstanding year as a 2nd year player. He does not have great skills but he has performed well. Last year he had an excellent season as my 3rd reciver, and this year he had a all-pro caliber season. QB Jay Winslett struggle din the middle part of the season, but he picked it up at the end which enabled him to post moderate stats, he did have career best in YRDs and TDs.

Selected Individual Stats
QB Jay Winslett: %56.1, 3834, 26/24, 75.2
RB Jerry Crawford: 663, 4.7, 4TDs. Was injured early but a decent season
RB Corwin Phillips: 504, 5.2, 5TDs. Filled in well for Crawford, he definetly overachieved
WR Cris Snyder: 89 Rec, 1188, 13.3, 7TDs. The team MVP, had a lot of big games for us
WR Wendell Medlock: 58, 772, 13.3, 4. He was my 3rd round pick of this year, had an excellent rookie campaign. Was injured for three games
DE Steven Mueller: 34 tckls, 9.5 sacks: Last year's #1 pick doing well, still needs to improve
DT Glen Giefeke: 62 tckls, 2.0: Excellent rookie year, great runstopper
LB Luther Norfleet: 115 tckls, 35 asst, 4.0 sacks: I FA pick up had an all-pro year
S Daniel Gerald: 74 tckls, 7 ints, 39.0 PDQ: Defensive rookie of the year. Excellent pick up from the 2nd round.

My first three picks this year were all impact players. I was worried about this draft but it has already paid dividends

Season Awards
S Daniel Gerald, Defensive Rookis of the Year
LB Luther Norfleet: All-Pro 2nd Team

Herb's Score

What to look for in 2019
Well my defensive front is pretty decent. Been picking up nice depth at DT and LB, have spent picks developing my DEs and Safaties. I will pbe looking for a top nothc CB in FA or the draft. Offensively I have done decent in drafting good Offensice Lineman and WRs. I will be just seeing where i can upgrade there in the draft. Well with so much turnover these few years and for a few more anything can happened, so far I have been lucky in getting producitve people from not so talented players

RICHMOND SKYDOGS 2017

Expansion Draft
I went after defensive talent here, but also recognize that expansion talnet isn't the kind of talent worthy of the dominant franchise I intend to build and therefore spend the last 15 picks or so on cheap guys and guys whose contracts will run out after this season.

After the draft, KC offered a 5th-round choice for TE Jared Myers. With Myers in the last year of his contract, I accepted the offer.

Free Agency Period
With a strong "D" as my initial goal, I go after All-Pro LB Jesse Grant. He signs a 4-year, $34.5M deal Week 2. Here are my 3 WK 11-20 signees:
T Kenny Cedeno: 4yrs,$8.25M
QB Jerry Corbett: 4yrs,$14.04M
S Deron Newton: 3yrs,$13.5M

Amateur Draft
1(1) T Byron Krieger, Butler
2(1) RB Joe Washington, Illinois
3(1) C Kevin Hadavi, Tennessee Tech
4(1) FB Dale Gullett, Rutgers
5(1) QB Thomas Larimer, Alabama
5(17) WR Freddy Lincoln, Quincy University
6(1) RB Dale Harding, Miami(FL)
7(1) LB Howie Anthony, North Texas

With an expansion team, I believe in going after "best available". Krieger looks like a franchise T, and Washington's endurance of 84 should allow him to be a workhorse back.

After the amateur draft, I sign one-year deals and get up to 70 players. (Note: I signed three guys to contracts of more than one year, but remembered that rule before I was done with all of the signings. I dropped them all before proceeding to training camp. Just mentioning this now.)

Post-Training Camp
I had no real busts or breakouts from the draft. I get offered a 7th-round pick by Cleveland for one of my FA pickups, CB Roman Gunn. I accept the offer, then cut 16 more guys to cut the roster down to 53. Here they are:

The 2017 Richmond Archetypes Season in Review

Expansion Draft and Free Agency

The expansion draft is uneventful as usual, but I do manage to grab a decent run-stopping DE with my first pick. For the rest I look simply for good value players so as not to eat into my cap space with guys who won't amount to much more than dead weight anyway. As I enter into my first free agent period, the first thing i notice is the abundance of quality QB's at the top of my scout's list! There are two I mark as having both enough talent and youth around which to build my franchise. Luckily the one I want is ranked lowest of the four by my scout, so I figure he has a good chance of being left for the last ten weeks. With that in mind, I decide to look at other positions for my franchise's first FA pickup. I quickly find a great run-stopping DT and a nicely balanced G. I bid on the DT first... and loose. I go after the G... and he decides to play elsewhere for less money. At this I see that the two older QB's I didn't want have already been snatched up. A lot of attention is now suddenly being given to QB Snyder (the one I want less anyway). Fearing that once Snyder is picked up, my guy will become the next hottest item up for bid, I decide to swoop in and rescue him from free agency torment with a nice four year, $66mil ($5mil bonus) contract offer. He graciously accepts. It is more than I had hoped to pay, but a good $20mil less than the total contracts of the other three QB's. No impact players are left at the beginning of the second half so I decide to wait until week 19 and grab any good bargains. My three second half FA's are all second year guys signed in week 19 or so. I'm sure with my lack of overall talent they'll start for my first few years but hopefully won't be more than backups in two or three years.

Amateur Draft

There are actually several great players at the top of my scout's recommendation list for this draft. There are two great DE's, a future QB star, several good OL prospects, a really nice cover cornerback, a RB with about half his abilities maxed (including BA speed and potential YPC), and several other top ten quality picks. In a normal career of mine, I probably would take one of the DE's or OL's and try to build my team slowly. In this challenge, however, the first season's score counts just as much as any other season's so I decide to take the guy I think will give me the most wins now. So with the first pick in the 2017 amateur draft, The Richmond Archetypes choose Austin Coleman, 6-1", 224 lb running back out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. His scores are 100, 32(54), 100, 56(100), 58, 47(85), 52, 100, 48. Not the prototypical 1st pick RB, but his BA speed, YPC, and Carrying all go to 100 and those are the three most important stats for and RB IMHO. I just hope the uniformity of his non 100 scores isn't an indicator of him being a bust!! I finish out my draft with a decent WR in round two, a decent DE in round three, a pretty good C in round four. This draft was great at the top, but not very deep at the bottom and thus my remaining picks aren't really of any worth I think. I fill my roster up to 70 players, hope for some breakouts and head to camp.

Preseaon

Luckily none of my picks busted (the RB lost a single pt of BAS and YPC only!) but no breakouts either. Actually in my hundreds of seasons playing FOF2k1 I don't think I ever had a real breakout player and I've only had maybe one or two real busts. Occasionally I have guys who change some or all of their stats, but never by more than 5-10 points. We go 2-2 in exhibition with no major injuries EXCEPT both my punter and kicker are out with injuries!! I almost never have one of my kickers out... let alone both of them! So I head to the free agent market and pick up replacements and head into the regular season.

Regular Season

We lose our first game 41-17 to Minnesota. Coleman got 86 yards on only 13 carries (6.6 avg) which makes the owners happy. Starting QB Nelson only made 6 passing attempts before getting pulled. He was 5/6 for 53 yds with no TD's or int's before being pulled. His replacement managed only 14/30 for 198 yds and TWO int's... At least the offense looks like it has some potential if Nelson could play the full game. He doesn't show any lasting injuries which makes the coaches extremely happy and optimistic for the next game.

This week New England comes to town and we win 24-14. WOOHOO! Coleman is really looking to be the real deal! He burned NE for 198 yds on 26 carries (7.6 avg) and two TD's. Nelson played the full game this time getting 20/30 for 181 yds with 1 TD and 2 interceptions. In light of Coleman's performances in the first two games its easy to overlook the four interceptions. Even though this is Nelson's 6th year in the league he never started a game before this season and only played in two. So despite his all-pro ratings we may be in for an adjustment period with him.

The Eagles come to Richmond this week for an early season NFC East matchup. We win 32-20 to put us at 2-1 and atop the NFC East after three games. Coleman again has another extremely efficient game coming up with 71 yards on only 13 carries (5.4 avg). I don't understand why he has gotten so few carries in two of our games, but at least he is certainly making the most of them! Nelson plays pretty well as well with 18/30 for 190 yds and one TD. The team is really starting to become cautiously optimistic at this point. We're happy to be 2-1, but feel we could have been 3-0 had Nelson played the whole game against the Vikings. In an interesting note, our replacement kicker suffered a concussion in this game. I guess the position is just cursed for this team. Our top CB sprained his knee, but is expected to play in the next game.

This week brings our second NFC East challenge. This time we pack our bags for Jersey to play the 1-2 New York Football Giants. The Giants barely nudge us 20-17. Coleman picked up 73 yards on 18 carries (4.0 avg). Nelson again only made 6 attempts before leaving the game with a hyperextended elbow. He shows questionable for next week but the hated Redskins are coming to town and we can't let him miss the first game in what should become a hotly contested regional rivalry.

Against any other team we probably would have let Nelson sit out a week to heal, but this is the Redskins and we feel a game like this is important to help us establish our franchise's identity. I just noticed my replacement punter was injured in the last game and will be out 3-5 weeks for arthroscopic knee surgery. Wow.. maybe there is something to this curse. Washington takes round one 20-3. Coleman got 51 yards on only 10 carries. Efficient, but we need to get this guy more touches. His playing time is set to 6 which I think is pretty high for a rookie. Nelson has a poor game only getting around 120 yards passing, no TD's and one interception.

This week 1-4 Carolina comes into Richmond. We feel we really need a win right now to get this season back on track, but unfortunately still fall 23-17. Coleman only managed 49 yards on 18 carries (2.7 avg) in the game. Nelson only completed 42% of his passes. Yet we still lost by less than a touchdown. This team still has reason for optimism, but the media and fans are already starting to loose faith for this season.

We get a rematch with the 2-4 Giants at home this time and we take this one 21-20 on an Austin Coleman 46 TD yard run with 4 minutes left. Coleman finished the game with 108 yards on 17 carries and 2 TD's. Nelson passed for a TD, but also had three interceptions. He also passed for over 200 yards for the first time this season. After this win we are 3-4. If you told the coaches they would be 3-4 at the beginning of the season they would have been pleased. But now, we have the feeling that we could have been much better. Still we're only 1.5 games behind Arizona for first place in the division and we haven't played them yet so we still have a chance at the playoffs. However, six of our first seven games were at home so we could also still be in for a long season and high draft pick.

We get to travel to Miami this week to face the 4-2 Dolphins in this inter-conference matchup. The team plays hard, but still falls 31-13. Coleman gets 64 yards on 13 attempts (4.9 avg), but Nelson really drags the team down with his 4.4 yards per attempt and one interception without a TD. Maybe this team's expectations got too high after our decent start. Nelson has been playing through a bit of injury with his hyper-extended elbow and he finally looks to be 100%.

At the halfway point we sit at 3-5. This is much better than we expected at the start of the season, but we still feel disappointed as this team could have easily been at least 4-4 had Nelson not suffered through various minor injuries. This it’s the halfway point, lets look at some key stats from this season so far and grade the team by position.

Key stats for first half of Season

QB - Nelson - 108/197, 1161 yards, 4 TD, 9 int, 62.1 rating (33rd among qualifiers)

RB - Coleman - 129 attempts, 706 yards (1st in league), 5.4 avg, 7 TD (2nd in league)

OT - Kenny Cedeno - 2 Fumble Recoveries, 15 KRB, 46.8 B%, 3 SkA

LB - Kerry O'Neal - 60 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 1 blk, 1 hurry, 1 int

DE - Johnnie Burgess - 34 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 2 hurries

No DB over 23 PDQ (only O'Neal has an interception on the whole team!!!)

Back to the games.
Today the five and two, division leading Arizona Cardinals come into the Richmond Coliseum (still taking bids for sponsorship rights). At 3-5 we need to really go 7-1 to make the playoffs. With only 2 home games left (including this one), we really can not afford to lose here, but we do… 24-17. Coleman gets 57 yards on only 7 carries (8.1 avg) and Nelson again stinks the place up. Management has repeated given the coach instructions to give Coleman more carries and so far we have been ignored. At this point he only has 136 caries (about 15 per game). If he doesn't have 275 by the end of the season (20 per game from here on out) a different man will be coaching the Archetypes next season.

This week is our bye week. For their sakes, the coach and offensive coordinator better design some more plays for Coleman

We travel to Philadelphia. With the playoffs essentially out of the picture for us, we just hope to make it through the year without major injuries. Of course, it would be nice if Coleman could league in rushing so maybe we could get our attendance to increase. Anyway, we win a shootout with Philly 34-31. The coach must have finally gotten our message as Austin Coleman gets 176 yards on 24 carries (7.3 avg) and 1 TD. Nelson completes less than 40% of his passes for 202 yards and 2 interceptions to go along with two TD's. He made almost as many bad passes (10) as completions (12). Nelson better be glad Coleman has carried us to a 4-6 record to cover up for his (Nelson's) terrible season.

This week we travel to 6-4 Dallas and we win 26-23. Perhaps I had given up on this team too soon. Still at 5-6 we would need to win our next 5 games to get into the playoffs. Coleman rushed for 73 yards on 18 carries (4.0 avg) and 1 TD. Nelson actually played well going 20/33 for 204 yards with 1 TD and no interceptions. Our kicker really won this game for us going 4/4 on FG's and 2/2 on PAT's.

This week we travel to division leading Arizona. At 7-4 they are a full two games ahead of us. Of course, a win would close that to just one game with four remaining. But since we lose 14-21, we fall to three games out. In one of the biggest games in this young team's history, you would think the coaches would try to get the most out of their young, emerging superstar. Well… not our coaches.. they gave Coleman the ball seven (7!!!) times for 17 yards (2.4 avg). He did get 2 receptions for 19 yards and a TD. Nelson passed for 150 yards, 2 TD's and an interception and led the team in rushing with 59 yards. At this point ownership is incredibly doubtful that Coach Bernstein will be back. The next four weeks will really make or break him depending on how hard the team plays in light of playoff elimination.

This week we travel to Greensboro for probably our second most important rivalry as our franchises will forever be tied together. Greensboro is 7-5 and we would like nothing more than to defeat them and kill their playoff ambitions! Unfortunately they have other thoughts on the matter and smoke us 16-3. Coleman had a terrible game getting only 3 yards on 11 carries. Nelson wasn't much better after leaving the game with a concussion after just 12 attempts for 90 yards passing.

Dallas comes calling at 7-6 and defeats us 13-10. We sure haven't been playing this playoff spoiler roll very well. Coleman gets 106 yards on 26 attempts (4.0 avg) as well as 4 catches for 20 yards and one TD.

We travel to England this week to play Manchester. Well its probably not Manchester, England, but we tell our players it is so they feel like it’s a special game. Apparently it didn't work as they defeat us 14-7. Coleman rushed for 40 yards on 15 carries.

We end our season against the much-hated Redskins on their home field. They defeated us earlier in the year on our home field and we really need this game. At 5-10, right now we care more for a pride than the higher draft pick a 5-11 record would net us. But I guess higher draft picks aren't so bad we tell ourselves after loosing 17-10. Coleman manages 120 yards on 20 carries but can't find the endzone. Nelson completes almost 65% of his passes for 191 yards, 1 TD, and 1 int.

Season Recap

So we end the season at 5-11. Lets have a look at the stats for the whole season

QB Randal Nelson - 225/421, 2411 yards, 5.72 YPA, 11 TD, 14 INT, 65.3 QB Rating

We still feel FA pickup Randal Nelson is a great prospect for the future and that this team can only go as far as he takes us. That said, we expect huge improvements from him next year and plan to give him better receivers to help him as best we can.

RB Austin Coleman - 257 attempts, 1302 yards, 5.0 avg., 9 TD

First overall pick of the draft Austin Coleman had a great season. His numbers, especially touchdowns, suffered in the second half but we still view him as the main reason we were able to win even five games. I see Nelson's improvement as the key to our future, but Coleman is definitely the guy who will carry us there. Coleman seems to be a big play RB who needs lots of carries to get his yards consistenly. I would have liked to have seen what he would have done with 300 carries.

WR Carlton Barber - 62/131 catches, 800 yards, 12.9 avg. 3 TD, 9 drops

My second round pick should make a good second WR, but really needs to raise his catches, lower his drops and find the endzone more to be relied on as a primary receiver. I doubt he has the talent to do so and perhaps a lot of Nelson's troubles can be blamed on the poor received corps.

LB Kerry O'Neal - 110 tackles, 36 assists, 4 sacks, 1 int

As a player acquired in the expansion draft he really played above his ratings this season as the anchor on a poor defense. Still you have to give him his props for the tackles and sacks. He has one more year left on his contract and I doubt I will resign him after it expires unless he is willing to take a large cut in pay.

Team stats (in Quiksand format) J

Rushing: 4.4 / 3.4 / 3.7

Passing: 5.7 / 7.3 / 6.6

We had a great running game and a pretty good rushing defense, but were extremely poor both ways in passing. We also finished near the bottom in turnover margin with -11.

Chicago defeated Colorado Springs 13-10 for their second FOF Superbowl vistory.

Player Awards

Austin Coleman - Offensive Rookie of the Year, 2nd Team All-Pro Running Back

Kerry O'Neal - 2nd Team All-Pro Linebacker

RICHMOND SKYDOGS 2018

STAFF HIRING PERIOD
I grab a new scout, B.J. Nix. His ratings:

EX: DB,Young Talent
VG: DL,LB
G: OL,K
F: QB,RB

I also sign a new coach, Will McKoy. His ratings:

EX: RB,Dis
VG: Av. Inj,LB
G: QB,REC,DL,DB,Young Talent,Motivation
F: OL,K,Off Play Call,Def Play Call

McKoy should be a great help in developing my young talent that Nix should be great in finding.

Free Agency Period
My priority is to improve at offensive guard so Washington will have some room to run and my defense won't have to be on the field so long. I go after G Jermaine Walters in the first part of the free agency period. He signs a 4yr/$30.5M deal in Week 6. Here are my later-week signings:

TE Seth Frederickson
DT Leonard Money
WR Emmanuel Weydahl

Amateur Draft
1(3): DT Lance Haugen 41/84,40/85,72...a potential star at a position where i need a starter!
2(3): G Drew Glen 32/75,36/52,91....looks like i may now have the offensive line i need
3(3): WR Lawrence Terry...solid-looking WR to help keep the defense honest
4(3): DT Don Mathews 18/61,19/72,34...needed 2 starting DT's. Got 2 starting DT's.
5(3): QB Wade Hicks...has very nice-looking potentials in everything except for 3rd Down Passing (34). Could use him as a starter and run more on 3rd down.
6(3): DT Vincent Gunn...good run-stopping backup DT
7(3): QB Rico Stargell...hey, i need a QB...maybe he could break out
7(21): G Derrick Daley...roster filler

I'm creating my own thread where the rest of this team's updates will be.

GM 3ric at the desk of the Richmond Rednecks:

Hmm, ticket prices are at $24, the Skins have $81, wonder if I should raise my prices somewhat? I decide to stay put for now, knowing that there will be later opportunities.

Starting in 2017 with the expansion draft.

But first, I check out the free agency pool. There are four very good quarterbacks available. I like Vincent Snyder and Randal Nelson, the others have high "play for winner" values set.

My first pick in the expansion draft was C Claude Gearhart, DAL. All the remaining picks are below.

From the desk of Wesley Harper of the Richmond Rednecks

Position/Player Current Est Future Est Exp Sgnd
C Claude Gearhart 10 12 8 2017
LB Kerry O'Neal 10 11 7 2018
P Zach Reid 10 10 13 2018
FB Leo Compton 10 11 6 2017

CB Harry McClelland 2 8 2 2018
T Calvin McDonald 2 7 2 2018
T Luther Dover 2 9 2 2018

Five players with 10 years of experience or more, nine with 3 years or less experience. Nine players with a one-year contract, 15 with a two-year contract and 1 with three years.

Now to free agency. I am allowed to sign one player during the first 10 weeks, and it is not certain that one player is going to be a QB, there is one in the draft pool which I like. The RB position in the draft doesn't have any true blue-chippers, but that is also true for the FAs available. I decide to run for Chicago Bear's DT Pat Rogers. He's 6-5, 307 lbs, rated 80/85,53,82, has 5 years in the league out of McNeese State with average loyalty and low "play for winner".

I offer him a five-year contract worth $51 million. After holding out five weeks waiting for more lucrative offers, he agrees to join the Rednecks. Now we wait until week 11 to see which the three remaining players are going to be.

We need guards, I have four tackles signed but just one guard. Chicago's Hardy Kemp wants a lot of money, but he seems to be the best one available. WR Nolan Gragg of San Diego is clearly the best WR left in the bunch. Jerry Corbett is a 2nd-year QB with some potential. They all sign within two weeks - Kemp for 3 years, $15 mil, Gragg 2 years, $10.5 mil, and Corbett 3 years, $10 mil.

Before the draft, I check the remaining free agents with at least three years experience. There are one or two linebackers with good potential, and and a tackle and a defensive end as well as some corners who aren't half bad, good things to know.

My favorite for the no 1 draft pick is Dwight Clinton, a 5-11, 210 lbs QB from San Diego State with ratings 43/86, 43/83, 42/85, 48/91, 47/90, 75, 49/91, 41/81, 72, 74. A little too symmetrical for my liking, (can you spell b-u-s-t? Good. Mr Rogers knew you could.) but I feel I have already committed to this pick with my strategy earlier in the FA process.

Well, here goes... I pick Clinton. I hope he will run my team for eight years and not get caught playing hide-and-seek with any interns.

Subject: Post-Draft Report

Rnd 1 - Dwight Clinton, QB, San Diego State
Rnd 2 - Donnell Wheeler, RB, Virginia
Rnd 3 - Raymond Parton, K, Northern Illinois
Rnd 4 - Reuben Barton, G, Washington State
Rnd 5 - Luther Boyd, S, UAB
Rnd 6 - Casey Botello, DT, Notre Dame
Rnd 7 - O.J. Page, WR, Florida

I get a trade offer for Clinton, the QB. Chicago offers a middle-of-the-pack T and their no 1 pick in 2018. I refuse it. It makes me feel better about him, however.

Now I start to sign players to get 70 into camp, with $61 million left under the cap I should afford it... Only one-year contracts and no more experience than three years it is.

I run the camp with the 4-3 defense as base and... find that 65.900 season tickets are sold! Whoopee!

Sad to say, QB Dwight "Bubba" Clinton bombed as bad as Nixon after Watergate. His ratings are now at 11/42, 10/41, 9/37, 20/56, 18/72, 48, 16/68, 8/26, 60, 76. The Rednecks get _that_ at a healthy cap figure of $6.920.000, which will rise to about $11.8 million in the sixth and final year of the contract... Well, things are getting mighty interesting real fast here in Richmond, Virginia!

Here is the 70-man roster after camp, with the amount the scout's ratings changed:

A couple of +3 increases on current ratings, and a +4 on the starting RB. At least something.
We should have a decent offensive line and a pretty good defensive line, and that's exactly where
I want to build up a team - from inside and out. A QB, no matter how good he is, is going to win
games while being flat on his back for most of the game.

On with the cuts and pink slips.

The final roster stands like this:

Barton, Wheeler, Parton, Stevens (undrafted) and Boyd are starting as rookies.

In the first exhibition game DT Botello breaks his foot and is out. In the second game starting TE Wiegert suffers a hip pointer and is expected to miss 3-5 weeks.

We go 0-4 in the preseason, just as expected. I've tried to protect my starters by making them backups or inactive as long as the rash of injuries allow me to. Happily, Wiegert and Botello's injuries are the worst that happens, and just five others have minor nicks and cuts. Starters Barton, Hardee, Compton and Daniels are all probable. Wiegert actually returns to the lineups though listed as questionable in time for the regular season.

Week 1 vs Minnesota (W16-9, 1-0)
CB Willis 87 interception return in 4th quarter, Parton 3 FG. Minnesota held to 46 yards on 25 rushes, a 1.8 average! 2nd string RB Prill rushes for 80 yards on 26 carries. Willis 2 ints, 122 return yards. WR Burroughs out with sprained back.

Week 2 vs New England (L24-37, 1-1)
WR Floyd 7-134 yds, 1 TD. 2nd-string QB Clayton 274 yds passing, 3 TDs, 3 ints. G Kemp and DT McClendon out 2-3 months. QB Corbett questionable. DT Botello is questionable, but is put back into the lineup.

Week 3 vs Philadelphia (W32-29, 2-1)
WR Floyd catches 7-yd TD pass from 3rd-string QB Hopper with 1:05 left to play. S Boyd bruises sternum, misses 3-5 weeks. Floyd demands trade. What did I do? RB Wheeler 16-97 yds.

Week 4 at New York Giants (L0-30, 2-2) S Ligeski 9 tck, 3 ass. Giants trample us with 213 rushing yards.
Week 5 vs Washington (L3-34, 2-3) Winless Redskins gets its first win of season, RB Wheeler 14-86 yds.

Week 6 vs Carolina (L25-28, 2-4) QB Corbett 249 yds, 2 TDs, WR Gragg 6-120 yds, S Cage 2 ints, DefPOW award. T Mason out for knee surgery, DT Reynolds breaks foot, DT Botello doubtful with hyperextended knee. We have only one healthy DT left. DE Townes is released and 2nd-year DT Joel Child is signed.

Week 7 vs New York Giants (L7-45, 2-5) Giants whip us even more this time. RB Wheeler 13-72 yds.

Week 8 at Miami (L17-20, 2-6) RB Wheeler 18-147 yds, CB Willis and T Cedeno both pulls groins, QB Corbett breaks ribs. Miami held to a total of 36 yards rushing as we actually outgain them with 368 yds to 194.

Week 9 vs Arizona (L7-31, 2-7) LB O'Neal 10 tck, 6 ass, 1 sack.
Week 10 Bye
Week 11 at Philadelphia (L22-31, 2-8) RB Prill 16-75 yds. The injury situation looks manageable for the first time in weeks.

Week 12 at Dallas (W38-31, 3-8) QB Clayton 296 yds, 3 TDs, WR Gragg 7-180 yds, 2 TDs, LB O'Neal 10 tck, 2 ass, 1.5 sacks. CB Clouse dislocated shoulder, T Daniels bruised ribcage.

Week 13 at Arizona (L17-36, 3-9) RB Wheeler 21-125 yds, 1 TD, Star DT Rogers doubtful with shoulder tendonitis.
Week 14 at Greensboro (L16-27, 3-10) RB Wheeler 22-122 yds, LB O'Neal 8 tck, 3 ass, 2 sacks.
Week 15 vs Dallas (L10-23, 3-11) LB Hardee 10 tck, 2 ass, 1 sack, LB O'Neal 8 tck, 4 ass, 1 sack.
Week 16 at Manchester (L13-34, 3-12) WR Kippen 101 KO return TD, RB Wheeler 18-81 yds, 53-yd TD run, CB Brogan hypextended knee, T Mason knee surgery.

The Super Bowl pits Buffalo vs New Orleans, with the Saints winning 31-24 thanks to WR and MVP Patrick Mayes' 9 catches for 183 yards and 1 TD. Early in the 4th quarter Irving Gomez caught an 87-yd TD pass from QB Flannery to put the game out of reach. Buffalo scored 14 points after that, but too late.

Herb score:
Team perf: 0/100
Franch value: 38/100
Profit/loss: 46/100
Difficulty: 70/100
Year-end score: 34

GM Summary:
Well, only three wins and 467 points allowed - WAY most in the league - but showed some life at offense with three scrubs at QB and a 2nd-rounder at RB that gained 1072 yards.
Looking forward to a better result this time with my no 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft...
I'm going to be less detailed with my reports from the following seasons.

Im glad Im not the only one to:

A) Get his ass kicked up and down the field.
B) Suffer morale-crushing, budget-annihilating busts.

2019 Season
Basiclaly looking to make it to the playoffs as a Wild Card, I am not looking to win the division cause I am battling a Eagles team that went 15-1 last season. BAsically I had a great season going 10-6(380/347), and wining the NFC east, with no bye though. I lost my first game in the playoffs to the Eagles, 37-12. Oh well, but I had an improved team, and things look good.

Pond Frogs 2019

I have several needs to consider this year. I still need a good linebacker, fullback and tightend. Also, will be looking for a center and another wr to take the burden off of Hitchcock. RB is a minor priority seeing that I am getting good results from not so highly rated players. My main priority will be getting a new head coach--I can't take all of these injuries. Also, I decided not to re-up any players last season. I want to save some cap space, and I need to get rid of some of that dead weight. I can get rookie almost as good for a lot less.

52 year old coach J.B. Ginn hired hired for 5 years 4.75MIl. He is only a stop gap measure for now, simply becasue there is no one better.

Vincent Snyder: 67/90

Season Notes on The Run:
WE finally beat Washington in the second week of the season. After staking them to a 14-0 lead, we scored 29 second half unanswered points. We have won three straight after losing the first game. Snyder makes the cover of SI for being player of the game three weeks in a row. The Headline, Dig 'Em: They're Frogcellent! We swept Washington! In the second game we won 31-17. Both Hitchocks scored a td. Vinny in the 1st quarter and Dieon in the last minute (on a 35 yard int return) to ice the victory. The game was tied until Schroder's 1 yard plunge into the endzone with 1:47 left to play. Despite our seven and one record, we cannot get any higher than a wild card spot. Phil is 10-1 and has beaten us twice. After beating Chicago on a last second field goal, we are 9-4 and assured of at least matching last seasons record. Final regular season record, 11-5 (wild card team)(334-287)

Comments: I certainly didn't expect to do this well in the first season! I was looking for offensive firepower in the draft, but ended up picking defensive players in the first two rounds (on the 'best player available' theory), but I got two very solid players at LB and S. My free agent QB had a good year, but will do better with decent receivers and a better pass-blocking line - the offensive system I use is very much pass-oriented (around 70:30 pass:run), and really needs good WRs to make it work properly.

A good draft next year should see the Walkers improve the squad, but it's tough to see how they can do better than this season!

The 2018 Richmond Archetypes Season in Review

Beginning of Season and Free Agency

As promised in mid season last year, the team decided to go with a coaching change to start their second year. It wasn't that we didn't win enough games it was because management really felt the old coach would never be able to properly use or develop our young developing superstar RB, Austin Coleman. Plus, the old coach was here before me and I really wanted to bring in my own guy for the job and for this reason the scouting staff was replaced as well. My new coach, Damon Patten, has a very good reputation for working well with quarterbacks and running backs and is especially known for his work developing young talent. My new Scout, Allen Behrendt, is only 37 years old, but already has a very good reputation as for finding talent at nearly every position.

Looking at my roster through with improved scout, I am disappointed to see Nelson take maybe a 10-15% hit across the board on his stats. Coleman takes a hit as well, but nothing by more than 10 points. After his performance last year we're still very happy to have made him our first pick last year. The franchise tag is placed on our kicker and we head to free agency.

We make a play for an amazing 5th year DT with current ratings of 75, 98, 95. After losing out on the two guys I wanted last year I make him what I feel is an amazing offer (I'll have cap room for a year or two anyway right?) of $42 mil for 3 years when he is only asking for $24 mil over 3 years. He draws offers from at least half the teams, but no one offering a 3 year deal is within 12 million of me, but I really don't want to lose out on a premier free agent for a second year in a row. Finally in week 5 he signs my deal. In week 10 we sign an average OT to a long term deal and spot 2 decent LB's from the hated Redskins without any offers, but I lose out on both of them. In week 19 I sign two passable backups at S and C.

Amateur Draft

I have this fifth pick in this year's draft. If it looks the same as last years I would be very happy. The first four picks are all QB's and RB's so I feel confident I can get a player I need. I really want a shutdown CB, but none are available so with the fifth pick in the 2018 amateur draft, the archetypes select Lenny Gutsche a 5-9" 190lb WR from Central Florida. Hopefully this will give Nelson the final tool he needs to be the force we expect him to be. With our second round pic we take a S with great potential at run defense and interceptions… just the way I like my safeties to be. There were a couple CB's available that would been reaches for the second round. Hopefully one will fall to me in the third. None of them do, but I get a great run blocking OT I was eyeing in the second round. In the fourth round I get a great run stopping DE that I was also eyeing in the second round. The fifth round brings me a pretty good backup QB. In the 6th I pull a pretty good G. Either this draft is much deeper than last years or I am seeing the effect of having a great scout finding me great diamonds in the rough. With my last pick I get a backup RB.

Preseaon

None of my players busted, but it seems a RFA DT may have broke out a little and the QB I took in the 5th round gains enough maybe 5-10 points across the board to make him starter potential.

Since Coleman's has already maxed out his potential I sit him in preseason to avoid risk of injury and we go 0-4. My goal for the regular season is 7-9.

Regular Season

We begin the season in Dallas and suffer a 38-10 loss. Coleman gets only 25 yards on 11 carries, Nelson gets 140 yards and one interception, and Gutsche mysteriously doesn't play.

We follow up our road tour with a stop in Cincinnati. Two of our three active safeties are injured so I pick up an injury replacement for a one year deal. We tear about the Bungles 33-13. Coleman got 80 yards on 15 carries while Nelson passed for 259 yards one TD and one interception.

In our first home game of the season, Portland comes to down and we loose 28-21. Coleman got four yards on eight attempts, but Nelson kept us close with 238 yards passing and two touchdowns. WR Barber, last year's second round pick, caught seven passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

San Francisco comes into Richmond Colliseum and we win 23-20. Unfortunately injuries are really starting to pile up on us. Coleman goes out with stretched knee ligament. Fortunately the backup I drafted in the 7th round turned out to be pretty good so far and should be able to do a decent job.

Bye week.

Coleman's condition improved but we'll still bring him off the bench this week at Arizona. .Even without him starting we manage to win convincingly 28-3! Coleman's replacement Van Pelt led the team with 90 yards rushing on 16 carries and two touchdowns. Nelson had a pitiful game. Throwing 10/21 for 68 yards with one TD and one interception. Safety RJ Harvey, my second round pick, won game MVP honors with one pass caught against, two defended, two interceptions, one TD in 29 pass plays. Its nice to finally have a playmaker in the secondary.

The much-hated Redskins come to town this week. This time we slaughter then 31-17 behind Van Pelt's 114 yards on 22 carries. Nelson has his best game as an Archetype passing for 228 yards and three TD's. Again Gutsche mysteriously does not play a down at receiver even though he returns a punt.

Tampa Bay at 1-5 comes into Richmond and sneaks out with a 10-7 win. Nelson throws zero TD's and 3 interceptions… 'nuff said. Coleman has been having more trouble then anticipated getting over his injury even though he hasn't had a carry in three weeks. We decide to play him on the inactive list for the next game in hopes it will help him heal faster. My tackle goes down with a serious injury and I sign a replacement to a one-year deal.

We travel to New York to face the division leading, 6-2 Giants. We squeak out a 13-7 victory. Nelson has a decent game and Barber pulls in seven catches for 117 yards and a TD. It seems Barber has taken to heart what I said about him not being talented enough to be my go-to receiver and has clearly outplayed Gutsche this year, although Gutsche did get six catches for 71 yards in this game. Coleman still shows lingering signs of his injury so we decide to sit him again for next week since we have been playing well without him.

This week we travel to Tennessee to face the 1-7 Titans. Somehow they sneak out a 24-20 win. That is the second loss this season to a bad team. Van Pelt had 82 yards and a TD. Gutsche decided to heat up the rivalry with Barber by grabbing eight catches for 113 yards. Barber, meanwhile, had four for 57.

We get to play our second straight AFC Central opponent this week at Jacksonville. The Jaguars enter the game at 5-4. I feel the winner of this game will make a huge stride toward the post season. Unfortunately that team is Jacksonville as they take us down 31-17. Despite Van Pelt's good job filling in for Coleman, we feel we really need Coleman's big play ability back and luckily the doctors have cleared him to play next week.

The Giants come over to play this week having dropped their last two games to drop to 6-4. We drop them even farther with a 27-14 thrashing. Coleman welcomes himself back with a 98 yard performance. Nelson puts up his best game ever going 22/38 for 353 yards with three TD's and one interception. Gutsche was named game MVP however with his eight catch, 174 yard, two TD tour 'de force performance.

With Eight wins and three losses Philadelphia is currently the class of the division. This week, however, they have to come to our house. We defeat them 27 to 20 to climb into a second place tie with Dallas at 7-5. This time Barber came up big with seven catches for 153 yards and one TD. Nelson, clearly benefiting from the play of his two big receivers, completed 20/26 passes for 281 yards and two TD's. My rookie S Harvey is again game MVP with another two-interception game. Unfortunately Coleman will be out 3-5 weeks with a hip pointer just as we went the home stretch.

We travel back to Washington once again to play the hated Redskins. WE SWEEP THE SEASON SERIES with a 26-16 win!! Nelson completes over 66% of his passes and gets three TD's and Barber gets ten catches for 125 yards and three TD's! Looks like this team is really starting to come together and now at 8-5 and just one game behind the 9-4 Eagles are playoff chances are starting to look pretty good.

Dallas is also at 8-5 and have similar hopes for the playoffs and we play this week. They have to come to our stadium though and hopefully that will swing the game our way. Apparently it does as we win 25-13. Van Pelt rushed for 122 yards on 25 carries and Nelson threw for three touchdowns in this win. I get the feeling my offense if becoming much more balanced which bodes well for the future.

This week we travel to Philadelphia. A win would leave us both at 10-5 but give my team the tie-breaker. We win 17-13. Van Pelt had 94 yards on 13 carries, Nelson passed for one TD with no interceptions, but the hero of the game was Nick Cunningham who returned an interception for a the winning TD late in the third corner.

This week we get 3-12 Arizona at home. It should be a gimme game, but we have already lost two gimme games this year so we take nothing for granted. That attitude carries us to a 20-17 win and an 11-5 regular season record.

Regular Season Recap

We reversed our record from last year going 11-5. Lets have a look at the stats for the whole season

QB Randal Nelson - 265/441, 3201 yards, 24 TD, 10 INT, 91.0 QB Rating

Now those number's are much closer to what we had in mind when we signed Nelson last year to lead the team. Nelson truly established himself as one of the league's top quarterbacks.

RB Austin Coleman - 6 starts, 69 carries, 301 yards, 4.3 avg., 2 TD

Coleman followed up his amazing rookie year with an extremely disappointing sophomore season. He suffered through nagging injuries in the middle of the season before finally being sidelined for the last 5 games. We still feel he is the key to our playoff chances.

RB Albert Van Pelt - 10 starts, 213 carries, 1103 yards, 5.1 avg, 7 TD

We couldn't have asked for more out this 7th round pick. He certainly played well above his ratings this year.

WR Carlton Barber - 83/136 catches, 1135 yards, 13.6 avg. 10 TD, 9 drops

"Carlton Barber, you have shown me something." Played much better than expected. Last year I said I doubted if he could develop into a good primary receiver and he really stepped up to prove me wrong. Only time will tell if he can keep it up.

WR Lenny Gutsche - 68/118 catches, 913 yards, 13.4 yards, 5 TD, 8 drops

Really played well despite his tendency to disappear during some games. Should pair up with Barber to be the best receiving corps of the next several years.

LB Kerry O'Neal - 108 tackles, 29 assists, 4 sacks, 1 int

Proved that last year wasn't a fluke by putting up almost identical number and earned himself a contract extension in the process.

S RJ Harvey - 57 tackles, 6 int, 1 TD, 8 passes defended, 52.9 PDQ

This season was a great showing for the second round pick. Anchored the secondary like a proven veteran.

Team stats (in Quiksand format) J

Rushing: 4.3 / 3.6 / 3.8

Passing: 7.2 / 7.2 / 6.5

My passing attack improved by 1.5 yards as Nelson had his break-through year.

Playoffs

I don't get a first round bye and get to play Philadelphia for the third time in six weeks. Since we defeated the evil Eagles both times we played, the team's confidence is pretty high going into this game.

Philly gets the opening kick off and drives for a touchdown. We get the ball to about midfield before we punt it away. Philly fair catches on their 24 yard line. They move the ball back to midfield before they are forced to punt into my endzone. We are forced to punt again and Philly scores a second TD. We punt, they punt, we move the ball pretty well and get in for a TD. Philly gets the ball back and misses a field goal as time expires. We go into the half down 14-7 just starting to get momentum. We come out in the third quarter and drive all the way to their ten yard line before we are forced to go for the field goal which we make to make it 14-10. Philly fumbles the ball in their territory giving us a great opportunity. After losing yards are a couple of successive plays we get the first down and then Coleman runs 21 yards for a TD to make it 17-14 with 2:31 left in the 3rd quarter. Philly gets the ball back and coverts several third-and-shorts on their way to getting the ball to my two yard line. We really need to hold them to a field goal. On first and ten they try to run off left tackle but we stop them for a gain of zero. On second and two they drop back to pass and Philly's QB finds 83 Dobler in the endzone for a 2 yard score. The PAT is good to make it 21-17 with 10:01 left in the game we get the ball at our own 20 yard line. My hand slipped and hit some keys on the keyboard and somehow the game magically ends at 21-17. I check the game log to see if it simmed the rest of the game or just crashed out of it and it appears to have just crashed out the game. The box score for this game is blank as well. Oh well.. I guess I let the team down this time. Sorry for the anti-climactic ending. L

Philly takes the momentum from their pseudo-victory and advance all the way to the

Superbowl where they are defeated 41-10 by my semi-hometown team, the Indianapolis Colts.

Player Awards

Albert Van Pelt - Offensive Rookie of the Year

Kerry O'Neal - 2nd Team All-Pro Linebacker

Carlton Barber - 2nd Team All-Pro Wide Receiver

Stay with same coach and staff

With limited cap space, I will not bid on any 1-10 week players
Didn't bid on any in the second ten weeks either. There were several good players avaliable, but with only 31Mil cap room, I didn't want to take the risk on loosing some valuable resigns becasue I took a new player,

Cedric Gordon 36/36

V. Hitchcock 68/79
D Hitchcock 43/79
Snyder 75/90

Not a good camp!

I am going to play several defensive players out of position because there is definatly a lack of quality at many key positions.
Game 1
Vincent Snyder, RIC, QB - 29 for 38, 409 yards, 3 TDs. What a game. Rookie LB Davidson is filling in admirably as a defensive end, if he doesn't get too disgruntled I may keep him there all year instead of rotating the position. 4-0 I am racking up a lot of points, but my defense is really suspect. When is the offensive gravy train going to end, I wonder? Exciting overtime win against NO in week six. They scored the tying points with no time on the clock. We drove down and scored on the first possession of ot! Oh NO! I just lost Davidson to a broken foot! First lost of the season (6-1) to PHIL. Am I ever going to beat these guys? Lost to washington again . . .now our record is 9-2, but we still have games against the senators and the eagles. Slump. Lost the the jets! Finished the season at 11-5 (473-387). This year we travel to NO for the wild card game,

Wild Card

The 2019 Richmond Archetypes Season in Review

Beginning of Season and Free Agency

Management was extremely pleased with last year's improvement and so both the coach and scout will return this year. We use the franchise tag on OT Ed Hubert since almost all of our FA's are restricted anyway. This year's free agent pool is again strong and I pass over dominant player at OT, C, DE, and LB to place my bid on pretty good cover cornerback. Overall I think he isn't as good as the above mentioned players, but CB is my weakest position right now. I make him a three year, $40 mil offer but after I notice I am the only one bidding on him (there is a 13 year veteran attracting all the CB bids) I lower my offer to three years at $36 mil. His old team, Miami, decides to offer him a three year $30 mil dear. After six weeks he hasn't made up his mind so I up my deal to four years at $48 mil. Finally in week eight the rest of the league notices him and he suddenly has 15-20 teams bidding for him, but no team is close to my offer so I feel confident. Finally in week ten he decides to take my offer. I offer deals to a decent CB and a decent S (both starter quality for my current roster). The Safety signs with me in week twelve. The CB follows in week thirteen. I feel like I have pulled a major overhaul of my secondary. My two new CB's and S should join with RJ Harvey to make a much improved pass defense. In week 19 I sign a backup potential DT to a long-term deal.

Amateur Draft

In stark contrast to the last few years, this year I will be picking 31st in the amateur draft. My only hope is that I can get a future starter at some position although I am probably weakest at LB. To my surprise two very good CB's are left when its my turn to pick and both could develop into better players than either of the two I got in free agency. I always think a team can never have too many good cover CB's so I decide to choose one over a decent G and a decent DT. With the 31st pick I choose Darrel Ross a 5'11", 185lb CB from Purdue. He won't start this year, but in 3 or 4 years I expect him to develop into one of the best cover cornerbacks in the league! The other CB is gone by the time my second pick rolls around, but I do manage to nab a DT with endurance and pass rushing both at 95. With my third pick I take another backup RB who looks like he could be a star if given the chance. In the fourth round I take a backup G. In the fifth I take a TE who might start this year. In the sixth round I take an RB who is really too good to pass up even with my already huge amount of quality at the position. My seventh round pick is a LB who might actually be starter someday with my lack of depth at LB.

I now have four RB's on my roster with future estimates of "very good."

Preseaon

None of my players busted, but I notice I forgot to sign a punter before training camp so I go to do so now (sorry!). We finish the preseason 2-2. No one seems to notice. We really hope to go 12-4 this year and make it at least the divisional championship game.

Regular Season

We start the regular season at home against Denver and lose 9-6.

We travel to New York to face the Giants in week two and defeat them 21-16. The offense is again mediocre.

Arizona comes to Richmond and we narrowly defeat them 23-20. Nelson manages two touchdowns and no interceptions, but again our kicker is our (unofficial) game MVP.

Dallas comes to town next our offense finally decides to show up as well as we defeat them 49-30. Coleman exploded for 185 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carried (9.7 avg). Nelson passed for over 300 yards and had three touchdowns against a single interception and some guy named Chaney(?!?!) caught 8 balls for 155 yards. Let me check my media guide to see who this guy is! Riddick Chaney is a rookie free agent out of Purdue. In four games he has 19 catches for 258 yards. His stats are pretty good for a RFA, but not great.

The 1-3 Colorado Springs' team comes into town this week and we pund them 31 to 13. Coleman got 116 yards and two TD's on 27 carries. Nelson got over 300 yards passing with two TD's and an interception. Gutsche caught 10 balls for 160 yards two TD's.

We get to play at 1-4 Arizona this week and blow them out 38-7. Coleman ran for three touchdowns and 93 yards on 22 carries.

We take our show on the road again this week to face 2-4 Portland. We go up 30-0 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter and hold the lead until the fourth quarter. So of course, we LOSE 36-30 has their QB throws three fourth quarter touchdown passes to send the game to overtime!!!

Luckily we get our bye week to regroup.

The Giants get the pleasure of facing a pissed off Richmond team at Richmond Colliseum. We defeat them 22-14 to go to a division leading 6-2. Coleman seems to have returned to his rookie form as he led the team with 124 yards and one rushing TD on 16 carries. He also caught two passes for 48 yards and one TD.

This week we get to face the hated Redskins in Washington. They come into the game at 4-4, but when these two teams meet you can basically throw the records away. Washington wins round five 23-21. Individual stats or accomplishments are meaningless in this game. We must win the rematch.

We travel to Oakland this week to face the Raiders. We pummel them 48-17. Coleman rushes for 73 yards and two touchdowns, but Van Pelt comes off the bench to upstage him with 128 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. Nelson simply plays error free football and throws in a touchdown pass for good measure. At this point we are 7-3, but three teams trail us at 6-4 in our division.

We face one of those teams this week as we travel to Dallas and defeat them 30-3. Coleman gets 143 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries.

Philadelphia and Washington still trail us by one game and this week we travel to Philadelphia to play the evil Eagles. Archetype fans will never forget the 2018 playoffs. We manage to win 17-14 to run our record up to 9-3. This game is won by the defense lead by Shawn McGee and his two interceptions. The hated Redskins also lost this week which puts two games ahead into first place.

Speaking of the hated Redskins, they come to visit us this week. We would love to knock them out of the playoffs, but they blank us 27-0. Let this game never be mentioned again.

We face another tough test this week as we go to the Windy City to face the 10-3 Bears and they send us to our first two game losing streak of the season 33-18. To make matters worse we are now tied with Washington for the division and the hated Redskins own the tiebreaker.

Needing a win badly, we face 6-8 San Francisco at home this week. My boys deliver 24-14 to put us up to 10-5, the Giants defeated Washington to allow us to control our own destiny next week.

We would need a lot of help to claim a first round bye, but we can still get a game at home if we defeat Philly at home. We send a message to the rest of the league with a good old-fashioned 48-0 ass-whoop'n.

Regular Season Recap

We kept our record steady at 11-5 this year. Lets have a look at the stats for the whole season

QB Randal Nelson - 268/442, 3109 yards, 21 TD, 16 INT, 82.6 QB Rating

Nelson's numbers were down a little this year and we would like to lower his interception total, but we're still extremely pleased with his performance.

RB Austin Coleman - 265 carries, 1208 yards, 4.5 avg., 14 TD

Coleman regained much of his rookie form and flourished as head of my RB committee.

RB Albert Van Pelt - 87 carries, 394 yards, 4.5 avg, 1 TD

Solid numbers in limited time for this second year back. Luckily he's under his cheap rookie contract for one more year before we have to let him go.

WR Lenny Gutsche - 77/127 catches, 972 yards, 12.6 yards, 6 TD, 5 drops

Improvement over his rookie numbers as he assumed the role of primary receiver. But we would like to see further improvement next year.

WR Carlton Barber - 54/97 catches, 761 yards, 14.0 avg. 4 TD, 6 drops

A drop off from his amazing numbers last year, but this is where we expect him to be consistently each year.

DT Norman Robertson 54 tackles, 19 assits, 10.0 sacks, 2 blk, 6 hurries

My big time free agent from last year played big this year

Team stats (in Quiksand format) J

Rushing: 4.3 / 3.3 / 3.8

Passing: 7.0 / 6.9 / 6.4

My running game is still dominant, but my passing attack dropped a little from last year. My passing defense showed decent improvement, but more is required if we are to really become a dominant team.

Playoffs

The NFC wasn't very good this year as I see my first round opponent, the New York Football Giants finished a poor 8-8 and still made the big dance.

We take a three point lead on an early field goal and then get the ball back and score a quick touchdown. We get the ball back again but our forced to punt. NY takes advantage with their first TD of the game. We give the ball, but they can't take advantage as we force them to punt. We drive for a touchdown to make it 17-7. We force another punt and drive the ball to their two yard line. They stop us twice. Its down to third and goal at their four yard line. Nelson runs the QB draw for the touchdown! We go to the fourth with a 23-7 lead. We quickly get the ball back and score again. They get a field goal, but this is looking like a blow out. We again drive deep into their territory, but miss a field goal. They score a touchdown, to make it 17-30, but we're able to run our rhe clock for our first ever post season victory!

Coleman came up big with 101 yards on 27 carries, but Nelson was the star with a 19/26 for 265 yards, three TD's and zero interceptions. Gutsche had six catches for 100 yards and two TD's.

We travel to St Louis this week. They quickly score and we give them the ball back. They give it back to us, but we can't do much with it either so we just give it back to them and let them score another TD. Again we do nothing with the ball and decide to give it back to them for one last time this half. We settle for a field goal after moviugn deep into their territory to end the half. They start the second half with a field goal of their own and we promptly give the ball back to them and let them have another TD. We're really nice today cause we let them have it back really quickly. We somehow stop them and get the ball back but manage only a field goal. They score another touchdown. We give the ball back. They kick a field goal. We give the ball back. Final score: Rams 34, Archetypes 6.

St. Louis goes on to represent the NFC in the Superbowl, but Indianapolis repeats as champions 20-17.

Player Awards

Norman Robertson - 1st Team All-Pro Defensive Tackle

Lenny Gutsche - 2nd Team All-Pro Wide Receiver

If you are the impatient type, go here first.
http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~fof/ubb/...ML/002131.html

No franchise tag used.
Stay with coach and scout
No ticket price change

Accept trade from the cowboys, Arnie Cote, RB for their second (17) round pick.

This year I really need a linebacker, defensive end, and still holding out for the running back of my dreams. RB by committe is alright, but not necessairly what I want.

In week 20 signed R.J. Carrico CB 13.45 for 2 years
No ther FA signings except my own

lost a couple of back-ups in free agency, but no starters. have two unrestricted players left to sign before camp.

Richmond Voodoo Chiles 2020 Season (Season 4)

With success of last season I am primed to take this team deep into the playoffs, with outstanding QB J.R. Winslett. I decide not to resign my starting RB Jerry Crawford, I believe I can replace him. He was never a 1000 yd rusher and had average skills, he was though a good recieving RB.

Signings[*]Renegioated Signings
LB Luther Norlfleet: Is an all-pro caliber LB, and a team leader
G Jamie Caniff
TE Cole Thomason
WR Cris Snyder: The overachieving WR, I fathom him as a Tom Waddle type, got to keep this guy around
FB Shaun Matthews
[*]FA Signings in the first 10 stages
TE Josh Spurlock, MAN, $27.36/4yrs: Needed a solid TE for my QB, Spurlock should provide this. I decided this would be my only FA signing outside of my team, but I did resign several players to maintian some cohesion. Also I am saving some cap room for next year when I might lose several role players. I am willing to pay these players more then merket value to keep them. Things have been running rather smoothly with this franchise and I want to keep it that way.

Draft
Well I am not resigning my starting RB. I feel like he is not worth the $8-10M/yr he was asking for. I can find a similar back in the draft, ofcourse he will be more raw. I felt that I can allocate that money somewhere else. It did hurt me that Crawford was a Purdue guy (My alma matter) but business is business. It was obvious for me to take a RB with my first pick. He has nice breakaway speed, very similar to Crawford. The rest of the draft was week, but I did pick up another RB fo insurance.

Draft
Rnd 1 - Spencer Rutter, RB, Arkansas
Rnd 2 - Fred Ackerman, C, Stanford
Rnd 3 - Percy Buckner, RB, Arizona State
Rnd 4 - Corey Matos, S, West Virginia
Rnd 5 - Richie Perkins, WR, Washington State

2020 Season
Here is how to sum up my season, it was not played on the field but in the bedrooms of hospitals. I had so many Injured players. The biggest injury happend in the last preseason game to my WR Wendell Medlock. Suffered a nasty injury and it took him almost the whole season to recover, but he wasn't the same. This deep affected the passing game. My rookie RBs did very well but my offense never clicked. Also I lost several close contests. I ended up a disaapointing 7-9(272/334). Like I said my offense just dropped cause of these injuries. They never had a stable O-Line. Hopefully with a higher pick I can get some impact player. I really need a stud G or T. My team is talented but still young, hopefully this will not crush them.

Player Stats
QB J.R. Winslett: %53.4, 2806yds, 14/11, 73.8: A major dissapointment. With injuries to the O-line and WRs I expected a tough year, but JR should of stepped up more. He needs to toughen up.
RB Spencer Rutter: 904, 4.4, 3
RB Percy Buckner: 711, 6.0, 5: This was my own form of Thunder and Lightening. Excellent productivity for two rookie RBs. I might lean to one more this upcoming season, but this is a good problem to have. Unfortuantly they could not carry this team but they are rookies.
DE Steven Mueller: 39 tckles, 22.0sacks: what a year. He has the 2nd best sack total in a season, only 0.5 sacks from the number one spot. He was the bright spot on this defense. My defense played very well as a team, but no one else came to a season like this. He recieved my ownly award, All-Pro 1st team. It is a shame that he did no when Defensive Player of the Year, but I guess wearing women clothing does not wear well with the sports writers. He can wear pantyhose for all I care as long as he gets sacks like he was a dope dealer.

I don't think I'm going to post individual seasons anymore(though I only did one) because I feel I will post the same type stuff in the 5 year thread, but I did have to share this bit of info:

In 2019, my 3rd straight year with the #1 overall pick because I accidently left willingness to use injured players at 3 last year, I grabbed a CB I've been needing. No big deal. In the 5th round however I spotted a perfect red line QB and I needed a back up anyway for Snyder. He boomed like a madman, with a potential of 93 now, probably only about 35 before. I will probably start him this year and let the team grow with him, but I have a true franchise QB now, so this should get interesting real fast.

Well we did win 2 more games this year, but we cannot throw the ball, that will be the top priority this coming year. Also I thought we had a storng Defensive Line and LB corps but 35th against the run will not cut it, even for a second year team. I look forward to fixing the problems with this team and still expect to make the playoffs by year five which was my original goal.

Presenting your 2017 Richmond Virginians

In the expansion draft, well, it's the same guys as everyone else has been choosing from. We mostly take guys who are cheap and avoid any real talent. After the draft, we have 101 million dollars of cap room with 25 players, of course.
In free agency, our target for the first 10 rounds is a linebacker, Jesse Grant of Colorado Springs, whom we offer a 2 year, 13 million dollar deal. In week two, we up the offer to 13.25 million. By week three, we decide to withdraw the offer to Grant, and pursue qb Vincent Snyder of Wazzu (I think some of you may have heard of him.) We offer him 70 million over 4 years. He signs this contract immediately. By the time week 11 rolls around, we look to make offers to the top 3 free agents left on the board. G Darrin Dorsett gets a 2 year, 9 million offer, wr Frankie Craig gets a 3 year, 21.5 million offer, and s Marlon Douglas a 3 year, 12.25 million offer. Craig signs the first week, while s Douglas takes an identical offer from Manchester. Dorsett's offer is increased to 10 million over 2 years. We make a new offer to lb Barry Lyons of Miami, who had 114 tackles and 5 sacks in 20016. He gets a 9 million, 2 year offer. The next week, both Dorsett and Lyons come aboard, completing our free agency fun.
With the first pick in the draft, we eschew the popular notion that we need a halfback, and go for a wideout that looks like he should be a player for years to come. Todd Garrett of Arizona State projects to 89/92/92/88/95 across the board, and will provide a great target for Snyder (this is becoming my Pac-10 challange again). In round two we do get a running back, Conrad Hamby of Northwestern.

Draft Report:
Round 1: Todd Garrett, wr, Arizona State
Round 2: Conrad Hamby, rb, Northwestern
Round 3: Billy Baker, cb, Wisconsin
Round 4: Kennedy Mueller, g, Vanderbilt
Round 5: Leonard Miles, c, Oregon State
Round 6: Marc Oliver, lb, Southern Methodist
Round 7: Leland Davison, te, Butler

We fill up the roster with rookie free agents, and head for training camp. Immediately after camp, I accept Jacksonville's proposal of s Van Sweeney and a sixth round pick next year for free agent rb Harvey Peters, who would have been gone after the year anyway. We sell 65,900 season tickets, a number which I suspect will diminish due to poor play in the early years. Garrett comes through camp unscathed, as does Baker, who had made me restless with his return skills. As for now, Baker projects to 96 man to man defense and 85 interceptions. His zone d is awful, but I don't play that, so he's even more valuable than my scout's rating of him to me. Hamby is not so lucky, dropping to 24/51.
The preseason finds us 2-1-1, winning comfortably at home, and losing and tieing on the road.

2017 Regular Season
We win our opener against Minnesota, but proceed to lose 3 in a row. The Redskins are our second ever victim in week 5. After a loss, we see the w column again in week 7, 23-17 over the Giants. Two straight losses take us into the bye week. Following this, we earn our first ever road victory over the Eagles, 24-20. We celebrate by dropping 4 in a row, including the expansion battle in Greensboro, which the Freshman take 31-21. The streak is ended in week 16 with a 23-0 drubbing of the Manchester British Pansies in Manchester. The season ends with a 15-0 loss to Washington, which gives us last place in the NFC East.
Offensively, it was indeed a passing attack as predicted. Rookie wideout Todd Garrett was continually amongst the league's top weekly recievers, and Snyder had a fine season overall. The running game was anemic, and the defense mediocre at best. Rookie corner Billy Baker did impress, with 6 picks in his first year, giving 2 quality players from the draft.

Individual Leaders:
qb Vincent Snyder 270 of 473 (57%), 3484, 21 tds, 14 ints, 82.7 rating
hb Conrad Hamby 101 carries for 365 yards (3.6 avg), 1 td
wr Todd Garrett 102 catches (3) for 1488 yards (1), 14.5 avg, 9 tds (5), 8 drops, 56.3 catch%
lb Charles Hardee 106 tackles, 74 solo, 4.5 sacks
cb Billy Baker 6 ints (6t), 4 defenses, 41.1 pdq

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl. wr Todd Garrett is the only Virginian honored, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, and being named first team all-pro at wideout. rb Kennedy Moses is the league's MVP.

Westfall, Toby 93 DE 2017 2019 2 ----- $1,170,000
Bishop, Edwin 94 DE 2017 2017 2 ----- $740,000

I am offered a 3rd round draft pick for DE Toby Westfall, and take it.

Here is the summary of free agency
Week 6 - picked up Raiders backup QB Vincent Snyder for 7y/128.94mil
Week 20 - picked up CBs Lance Gillespie and Mark Long, both to marginal contracts

Here is the draft.

Amateur Draft Report:

Rnd 1 - Walt Nybo, WR, Georgia Tech
Rnd 2 - Ellis Moore, RB, Rutgers
Rnd 3 - T.J. Delgado, G, East Carolina
Rnd 3 - Ed Wheat, CB, Alabama
Rnd 4 - Corwin Donovan, TE, Fresno State
Rnd 5 - Conrad Harper, WR, Oklahoma State
Rnd 6 - Bo Dykstra, C, Tulane
Rnd 7 - C.J. Dortch, FB, Pittsburgh

Immediately following the draft I am offered, and turn down, a second round pick, and a mediocre tight end for RB Ellis Moore.

Round One - I am torn between a Top Safety and a very good WR. I take the Wideout because he is only 5-8, and we're the Smurfs.
Round Two - A RB ( 5-6 ) that I looked at in Round one is still available. I take Him.
Round Three - I am torn between two CBs who are both 5-11. I take Ed Wheat because he is 45 pounds lighter than the other choice.
I select Guard T.J. Delgado with the pick that I got from Carolina for Toby Westfall
Round Four - TE Corwin Donovan, who is (unfotunately) 6-8, is my round four pick.
Round Five - WR Conrad Harper, who is a possible breakout, is my round five pick
Round Six and Seven - I picked the BPA in both rounds. I considered Dortch in round three.

Here is the roster after my one-year pickups.

I had no major Busts in Training Camp. WR Walt Nybo dropped a little, and RB Ellis Moore gained a moderate amount.

I get through the pre-season at 1-3 with no major injuries. Only a few guys have minor dings. Going into the season, though, my scout is concerned about just about every position, and I have no cohesion. My Roster rating is last in the league, at 2.

The first game of the Richmond Smurf Franchise is a triumph at home against the Vikings. The Smurfs jump out to an early lead and lead 24-0, at the half. We hold on to win 30-20. Rookie Ellis Moore had a great day. He led the way with 36 carries for 190 yards and a TD. Nybo had 6 catches for 152 yards. We controlled the clock with 258 total rushing yards and a 39:12 TOP.

We take a loss in game two 27-20. It's only by opportunistic play that we manage to stay close, as we are unable to get anything going offensively. It becomes two straight losses as we go down hard to Philly 31-11. The Giants get us 24-14 to send us to 1-3. We suffer a number of injuries to our defense that'll make it tough to get back on the plus side.

The Smurfs bomb Washington 42-24 to get of the Schneid (sp?). There are 5 TDs scored in the second quarter, and we go to half time up 21-14. We tack on three more TDs in the third, though, to go up 42-14. They tack on some late points to make it look somewhat respectable. Moore has another big day 25 carries for 188 yards. He has 2 TD rips of 74 and 28 yards. Snyder has 4 passing TDs on the day.

The following week, Carolina upends us at home 34-21. We're never in it, as the Panthers put up the first 34 points of the game. WR Nybo has a big day playing catchup, 6-174-1. The Giants continue our slide as they beat us 33-23. They get out to an early lead, taking Moore out of the game ( 8 carries, 3 yards ). Miami nips us 24-21 to send us to 2-6.

At the halfway mark, a few of our players are having halfway decent seasons. QB Snyder leads the league in TD passes, but his ratio is only 16/12. Moore leads the league in rushing, but most teams have already had their bye week. Nybo is second in recieving, and is averaging 24.1 yards per reception. On the defensive side, OLB Nolan Krock is having a great season with 27 tackles, 11 assists, 5.0 sacks, and an interception returned 95 yards for a TD.

We bang Arizona 26-10, to start the second half off right. Snyder has his best day of the year, 25-37-349-2TDs. His favorite target is, once again, rookie Walt Nybo. Walt pulls down eight of the ten passes that are thrown in his direction. Amazingly, as we head in to our bye week, the NFC power rating has us seventh at 55. We're second to undefeated New Orleans in Scoring, but also have the worst defense in the league.

Philly slams us 38-13. QB Snyder plays mistake free, but is tossed all over the field by division leading Philly. They also throw a blanket over Nybo who can only haul in one of the eight passes that come his way, and matches that meager success with a drop. We're playing through a lot of injuries, especially on defense, right now. They aren't the problem, though, as Dallas beats us 13-7, on a day when our offense can't put it together. We're 3-8 right now, and would be looking at the #4 pick in the draft. I'd like to squeeze out a few more wins to please the fans, and to avoid having to pay a #4 pick. I hate those guys.

We start off right, sweeping the Arizona with a 34-10 drubbing. Moore seems to be wearing down. He hasn't had a big day in a while. I'll lower his PT and see if he can get a second wind. Snyder lifted us with a big day, however. The M*A*S*H unit defense really came through with an all-around good effort, as well. We'd really like to get a win at Greensboro in the Pride of the Expansions Bowl the following week. It is not to be, unfortunately, as they score 14 unanswered to edge us 17-12.

We conquer Dallas 35-10, in a game that is not even that close. It'd be easier to single out the guys who didn't have a good game, as everyone gets involved in the effort.

Unfortunately, we can't keep it going in Manchester, as they beat us 23-14. We end the season losing to division rival Washington in OT 27-21.

Richmond Smurfs Notables

QB Vincent Snyder -- 251-514-48.8%-3749-29TDs-15int-79.8 (took every snap)
RB Ellis Moore -- 296-1274-4.3ypc-7TDs
WR Walt Nybo -- 65-1251-19.1ypc-9TDs-11drops

S Lorenzo Chamoun, whom I passed on to take Nybo, didn't bust as I suspected and started every game for INDY (didn't go until pick 27, so I had a chance to get him anyway). He had 5 interceptions and a 37.6PDQ to go with 63 tackles, 30 assists, and a fumble recovery.

We wound up at 5-11, but played pretty close to our competition. We had a point differential of -19 for the season, even though we finished 6 games under .500. I don't know how the tie-breakers'll shake out, but we could be anywhere form the second pick to the fifth pick.

I extend G Floyd Mayes, who is in the last year of his contract, for two more years.

Philly goes on to beat Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl. Rookie RB Ellis Moore is our only honoree. His 1200 yard rushing year beats out teammate WR Walt Nybo 1200 yards recieving for Offensive rookie of the year. It seems as though Nybo is jobbed out of second team reciever because of the bias towards possesion recievers that the game seems to have. He has more yards than either of the second team honorees, one less touchdown, and much better averages per catch and YAC.

Herb Score - 4-27-55-70 33
