Which current artists are future Rock&Roll HOF locks?
With the latest round of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions announced this week, I was wondering: Who are the artists not currently eligble who are sure-things once they get past the 25-year requirement? Not just artists that are on that path, but where if they quit today they'd still have the body of work to get in?
Nirvana - Pretty much the closest thing to a 100% lock, right? Pearl Jam - See Nirvana. Radiohead - Also seems like a safe bet. Jay-Z? - The Hall is opening up to more rap/hip-hop acts, and he seems like a solid mix of critical success and commercial appeal. Which other rappers get in? Tupca/Biggie? Maybe Dr. Dre and/or NWA? Eminem feels kind of inevitable too now that I think about it. Nine Inch Nails - Not a huge body of work but critics love the guy. Lots of innovation on the technical/producing/live performance side. Also won an Oscar. Probably in. Beck? - Seems like critics love the guy. Don't know if he sells a lot of records but he seems to have something new out out every 15 minutes so let's put him in. Green Day? - Do critics like Green Day? I'm sure I've missed more than a few. So what do you think, who's a stone cold lock?

I'll take some flack for this, but I'd say Oasis should get in.
Yes, I'm biased. But they were a defining band of the 90s

First 4 I think are pretty safe bets, the last three are more of long shots.
Here are other ones I think will make it in once eligible: Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill is an all-time great album, and she had several other solid recordings Tupac - Might take a while, but he'll get in on his body of work. Public Enemy gets inducted this year, and NWA will be the next hardcore rap group to make it. Then it will be Tupac's turn Eminem - He's won an Academy Award and a slew of Grammys. Beyonce - Another solid album, and she will be a definite lock, but her current body of work is probably enough to get in

They are going to be inducted this year, and have been eligible for quite a while.

Johnny Cash is an inductee, as is Hank Williams, Sr. Not sure if they are any Country acts that have begun in the post-70s era inducted.

This site seems really slow, but has some good stuff for this conversation:
http://www.futurerocklegends.com/future_eligibles.php http://www.futurerocklegends.com/eligibles.php Looking over the ones that are not yet eligible, I'd list: Nirvana Green Day Alanis Morrissette Pearl Jam Eminem Rage Against the Machine There are some others that are head scratchers (that they are not in): Tom Petty? |

See, this is why I figured it would be a fun topic. I live in Ottawa (her hometown and ground zero for her mid-90s breakout), and I've have never considered Alanis as a HOFer.
One mega-hit album and not much else worth remembering, or am I short-changing her?

Hrm. Billy Preston should be in, though at this point I guess that's really doubtful.

I was thinking about Timberlake, but I'm not sure if he were to completely stop with music right now, that he would be considered worthy (without/unless you can consider his group work, as well). He and Will Smith will probably be interesting cases down the road, as they have both obviously evolved into complete entertainers rather than just musicians. |

Tool ought to be a lock. The White Stripes are a lock. P.J. Harvey is a little more fringe, but she'll likely get in at some point.

It'll be interesting to see which electronic artist is the first to make it. Moby is the most well-known and mainstream, and his crossover success probably helped increase awareness, but acts like Aphex Twin, The Orb, Chemical Brothers, Underworld, The Prodigy, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, D.J. Shadow and others deserve consideration. Those acts all helped pave the way for the broad success for current stars like Deadmau5, Skrillex and others.

I had them on my list initially, but they're over 10 years away from being eligible. If they never record another song, are they really a lock just based on their work up until now?

Well, how much is the current Hall determined by sales and popularity. I imagine there are a lot of acts in there that are "influential" not popular. But maybe not.

Don't you have to have a certain level of popularity to attain true influence?

Is TOOL in yet? They have to be considered among the biggest, if not the biggest rock band in the world.
Every album has gone, or will very soon go multi-platinum. Two #1 albums One #2 album All of this with nearly zero radio play, and a sound that has strayed so far off the beaten path that they've almost created their own rock genre.

I enjoyed going to it. It's not as comprehensive as I would have liked- I would like something more like the Baseball HOF where you get to walk through the entirety of Rock history. Instead it's a bit more hit and miss: you have a lot of stuff out there but it seems a bit more scattershot. Note: if you're a big photo person, you can't take pictures in most of the museum and I found that annoying. Also, there's not much else to do in Cleveland that we could discern. We went to an Indians game and were glad we didn't spend too much time in the city. SI

Yes, it is only 4 albums, but they prefer to go the Metallica route of releasing an album once every six years, rather than the Zeppelin route of releasing an album every year. Don't get me wrong...I think Zeppelin is absolutely incredible. In fact, these two bands (along with Pink Floyd) are, IMO, the greatest rock bands to ever walk the earth.

Yeah, but like the Sex Pistols she's seen as extremely influential to future artists.

For a while I thought they might make electronic music happy by throwing them a bone with a joint New Order/Joy Division entry, but they haven't moved on it. Frankly, groups like Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode and New Order have been massively influential.

P.J. Harvey is definitely a harder sell, but I think the critical acclaim of her body of work is high enough that she's likely to get in. Same with Bjork, though she's technically eligible already since her (highly obscure) first album was recorded when she was just 12 years old. |

Actually, there's lots of bands in that never had the kind of chart-topping popularity we're talking about. We may be over-estimating that factor.

Not eligible for several years (which surprised me -- I'm not a huge fan but for some reason I thought they'd been around forever).
