How often do your favorite teams win championships?
I am cursed. My true favorite team has never won a championship at any level in any sport during the time that I was a fan. The Dolphins won some Super Bowls before I became a fan. The Hoosiers won a couple years before I went to school there. I've had teams that I like win (notably, PSU and FSU in college football, San Antonio in the NBA, Denver Broncos in the NFL), but never the team I would have chosen if I could have picked a team to be champion at the beginning of the season. At the end of the day, most of my sports joy has come from watching teams I hate lose (like the Yankees choking away a 3-game lead against Boston last year). Sometimes (like after watching my Hoosiers get clobbered two weekends straight after a promising 4-1 start) I wonder if I would be happier if I just stopped caring.
How have your teams fared? |

If we're dealing only with pro sports I'm at five.
Cowboys - '92, '93, '95 Rockets - '94, '95 Astros - Nope I claim the Stars as my NHL team but don't really follow hockey. It was nice when they won. I also doubt I'd claim the Rockets if they won now. Don't really watch the NBA anymore. College sports then I've got two more. Longhorn Baseball - '02, '05

Saints fan here, lets take one step at a time, they only recently got their first playoff victory.
It has been noted in ancient scriptures that if they win a championship, the apocalypse may follow soon after.

I'd count any of the pro sports plus bigtime college sports like football and b-ball. But really, any non-high school or below sport that you truly care about would count.

The Red Sox won in the strike year? And nobody told me? I only casually follow the NBA. The Florida Panthers haven't won the Stanley Cup yet. The Rams won the Super Bowl in '99/'00, and I thought they won a second, but I can't remember for certain. Dodgers won the World Series in '81 and '88. Outside of that, bupkis. |

Yes, well the Bears at least had a championship in 1985, it's been since 1960 for the Eagles.
Phillies in 1980, I remember that just a wee bit. The Flyers haven't won since I've known what's going on, and the Sixers won in '83, but I care little about basketball. Only other real "win" was Villanova in '85, and that was just a temporary thing (I'm not counting Maryland's championship, I don't root for them in a diehard fashion). I suppose I root for Penn State, but I'm not really counting them either.

College Michigan Football: '97 I consider myself a fan of the Pistons and Tigers and they are clearly my favorite teams in their respective sports/leagues, but I am just not a big fan of either sport, so while I am happy and excited when they win, it's not nearly the same. Same goes for all college sports that aren't football.

I get two from college sports in recent years... and even though I follow college lacrosse, I'll leave that out as it gets a little silly there.
I started football fandom when the Dolphins were on top and grew up with them as my favotire team... hard to say whether to count their two titles on my list, as it was pretty early. |

Packers - 1 (1996) Brewers - 0 Bucks - 1 (1970/71 although, I was 8 months old) Badgers - 0 (Although, 3 Rose Bowls and 1 Final Four are 3 Rose Bowls and 1 Final Four more than I ever thought I'd see from them growing up in the 80s...)

Chicago White Sox: '05!!!!!
Miami Dolphins: Not in my lifetime, though Marino did lead us to the Super Bowl when I was like 5 or 6. Boston Celtics: I didn't become a fan until my high school years, so I'm still waiting on this one even though they've won in my lifetime Nashville Predators/Boston Bruins/Toronto Maple Leafs: They're right-tight neck-and-neck as to who my favourite hockey team is. Again, the Bruins weren't until my high school years, and the Predators have never won the Stanley Cup. 'Leafs, we shan't get into. And yes, the Celtics and Bruins are tied together in the same girl, which is a story I've never told anyone about. She's in essence the Lost Girl in my romantic stories (though not the Lost Gyrl, who was someone else and is the reason for my Maple Leafs' love) College I can't say I really have a favourite team. I just hate the Golden Gophers.

Packers - I became a fan around the age of 12, in '89. They have one Superbowl since then, and a Superbowl loss the following year. Greatest day of my sport fan life was that Superbowl win.
Astros - Started to become a fan when I moved down here 9 years ago and am into them more then I was with the Seattle Mariners when I was younger. They have never won one in their history. This year was pretty cool though. Not a big fan of any college. Kind of cheer on the Spurs but I am not a big fan just because I am not a big NBA fan, so that doesn't count at all to me. Not a real big hockey fan. I am a fan of the local minor league teams. The independent league baseball team has 3 titles int he last 5 years (and now the city is kicking them out the bastards). The hockey team and AF2 team made the playoffs in their first years last year.

NC State basketball twice (1974, 1983). I wasn't around for 1974, but I'm claiming it anyway.
Other than that, State's claimed 5 ACC football titles and 10 basketball titles. The Hurricanes won the Eastern Conference in the NHL in 2002. Panthers went to the Super Bowl two years ago. Bobcats just got started. Rockies...well, they try. Not been the same since they broke up the Blake Street Bombers. |

UNC Basketball - 1982, 1993, 2005
I don't really have any memory of the 1982 one. I was a true Lakers fan and Cowboys fan in the 80s, b/c of Magic Johnson for the Lakers, and my dad was a big Cowboys fan. But idon't claim either of them now so i'm not going to take credit for those. NFL - Panthers - so close in 2003. MLB - Cubs Bartman in October, Kasay kickoff out of bounds in Jan 2004, UNC not back on top yet, that was just a rough sports year. 2005 Tar Heels made up for all of it though. |

While I was alive? Twice. The Reds in 1990 and the Buckeyes in 2002. Historically the Reds have been very good, but I didn't witness most any of it. All I have is their past glory. As for the Bengals, all I have is hope for the upcoming years.
The Rockets also won in 94 and 95, but I wasn't a fan of them back then. Last edited by korme : 10-31-2005 at 01:11 PM. |

That I've been old enough to enjoy.
Notre Dame football-1988 Cincinnati Bengals- heh, you're kidding right? I enjoyed the Reds' win in 90, but I'm not a big enough baseball fan to really count that one. |

NY Giants, 2 Super Bowl wins
Other than football, though, I can't think of any team I can really call myself a fan of. Because I started watching football first and was a fan of the NY Giants first, I tend to lean towards the New York teams. But with the Rangers and Yankees, I was never much a fan of those teams. In those sports, I followed the Islanders and Mets more closely. But I can't really call myself a fan of either team since I rarely follow the Mets and the Islanders are just more my team of interest in hockey. I'm pretty much more of a fan of hockey as a whole than for one team. For tennis, though, I was always a fan of Andre Agassi. But I guess that doesn't count. |

Toronto Blue Jays - 1992, 1993 World Series titles. 1985, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1993 AL East Champs
New Jersey Devils - 1995, 2000, 2003 Stanley Cup Champs New Jersey Nets - 2002 & 2003 Eastern Conference Champs New York Jets - Ok..so it's been a while. A loong while. My happiest moment as a sports fan and as a player, was when we won the division title in our conference during my senior year as a tennis player, going undefeated in our division to clinch. I was the only guy on the team who had been on the team for our 3-17-1 campaign during my freshman year and so...for me, it was just an amazing turn of events. Of course, this was almost a decade ago. But I'll never forget being part of it.

I take it back. I voted never, but when I was a HUGE Raiders fan, they beat Philiadelphia in the Super Bowl. I've since strayed away from the Raiders, and don't really have a favorite football team. Damn Al Davis for, well, for everything.
I'm a San Francisco Giants fan, and things are looking grim for them now. I guess I'm also a bit of a Celtic fan, so Boston won a few NBA championships for me as well. While not a big hockey fan, the Avs and Patrick Roy won a couple with me on their bandwagon. I'm just not sure if that counts, as I was more in the "I hope the Avs win (again) this year" camp. |

I'd be willing to bet that, too. What's really odd is, my favourite teams in the other Big Four Sports (classically speaking anyway) have no one that could really knock them off my favourite spot, though there are other teams I enjoy in each sport.

Vancouver Canucks - get serious.
Orlando Magic - became a fan after their finals apperance, the closest I've seem them come is getting crushed by the Bulls in the Eastern finals. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 2003 Super Bowl. B.C. Lions - Grey Cups in 1985, 1994, and 2000, but it's the CFL, it's hard not to win it eventually. Toronto Blue Jays - 1992 and 1993 WS, but I'm hardly a fan anymore. |
