Lightbulb A "multiplayer" idea

Hey guys,

Here's something i'd like comments on while we wait for the new FOF game. It's like running several mini Village Challenges against each other. The idea is to start everyone at the same ground level (identical initial universe) and let the thing run from there. I had thought about making the post-draft generation the start point, but it wouldn't be consistent later on in the tournament anyway.

The scoring system is very simplistic and should probably have more funky items to reward underemphasized parts of the game. this is why i'm fishing for suggestions... heh. Plus i'm sure some of the more experienced players have better sets of house rules to impose.

Oh, and BTW i'm not just spinning my wheels... i'd certainly be willing to referee something like this (ie i'd be willing to be the sucker who doesn't get to play) if we have enough guys interested. Imagine the smack and bragging rights... heh. All, good natured of course.

----

Basic Rules:

Each team is to consist of three players. How the team decides to organize itself regarding trades, signings, renegotiations, etc., is entirely up to the team.

Initial settings:

- No expansion teams.
- GM may be fired.
- Auto signing of draft picks.
- Cleveland Browns with expansion draft.

House rules:

- No backloaded contracts, period (ie the best you can do is a flat salary contract).
- No restrictions on 20 Step FA signings.
- Maximum ONE pre-training camp FA signing.
- No proposing trades, period. Computer initiated trades may be accepted with ZERO modifications.

Scoring System:
Base Score is Herb's Score at the end of the season.
Add +1 for every Second-team All-League player.
Add +2 for every First-team All-League player.
Add +3 for League MVP (do NOT add the All-League bonus for this player, if applicable)
Add +3 for Defensive or Offensive Rookie of the Year (do not add All-League bonus)

1. Referee wipes his universe folder and generates a clean 1999 Browns with expansion draft savegame.
2. Universe folder is compressed and sent to one representative of each team playing.
3. All teams then may discuss and go hog wild on strategy and roster/gameplan adjusting.
4. Teams proceed via Village Challenge rotation, passing the universe folder at the end of season phase.
5. After each season, Referee collects Universe folders to verify scores and will post standings.

Example of Scoring
------------------
Herb's Score is 78.
Quarterback wins OffROY, MVP, and 1st Team.
Defensive Tackle wins DefROY and 1st Team.
Kicker wins 2nd Team.

78 + (QB = 3+3) + (DT = 3) + (K = 1) = 88.

The QB will receive credit for both the MVP and ROY honors, but not the 1st team honors.

Problems with the Setup I posted above:

After every season, each team will get different draft pools. Assuming the FOF draft generation is using the same probability distributions for each season's draftlist, this shouldn't be a big deal. Not as fun though, since people can't say "DAMN I knew we should have taken (insert player)! Look what he's doing for team b! Argh!" etc etc

Most of the play will have to be on the honor system since the referee won't be checking every single week and can't be expected to check every single team's files thoroughly. The hope is that only the honorable and active board users would want to play anyway - and the shame factor of cheating would be deterrent enough.

Activity of players would also be a concern, as a single player on a single team could hold up the entire tournament. Again, the hope is that only the active users would be signing up. Maybe set a schedule of one round (three seasons) per week. Any team not turning in universe folders on time maybe gets a penalty or something.

Woops, sorry....

Subby is doing the same thing for individuals.

I understand you want to see teams joining.

I'd like to join, if somebodyt is interested in having me in his team... (chances are little )

I thing I'dlike to state about the scoring:
The points for awards is not a good idea:
1. Some people tend to use a strategy wich makes a surtain player all league every single year. (MLB lot of tackles, QB with 100% pass)
2. It will be impossible to search through the universe folder or the save game to fins out which team, which player and when the awardswere given. Since the stats and so on of retired non-HOF players got deleted. (Actually I'm not sure about that deleted part, but it would be almost impossible to check them anyways.)

I guess it wasn't exactly clear what I meant by award bonuses. The universe folders would be turned in at the end of season phase (before start new season), so the referee would be able to see the end of season awards.

Using a strategy that maxes out a certain position is fine - that team would be guaranteed to have an all-league player at that position barring injury, but it requires tradeoffs. For example, if you placed a 100% throw probability, you're almost forfeiting the possibility of all-league running backs. Also, low run percentages would probably result in less linemen getting all league since runblocks are more or less the only stat (sacks of course, being negative).

The thinking behind a bonus regardless of position was to try to level out the value of the different positions. This may not be a good thing in some peoples' eyes. However, it does reward players for making selections in non-sexy positions. A stud middle linebacker is not generally thought of as carrying a team to a super bowl, but a quarterback often times is. By awarding points to all league selections, I think it forces the teams to try to think about the whole team and to try upgrading where maybe they might not have thought of (ie punter or kicker).

Well, that was the thinking behind it anyway.
