Maine Moose 2009-2029
Please welcome the Maine Moose, the latest addition to the NFL in the year 2009. In its infinite wisdom, the NFL places us in the NFC West.
I will be utilizing the following house rules: 1. Limit of one UFA signing during first 10 weeks, 3 in final 10 weeks. The exception is the inaugural year, 2009, where I may sign an unlimited number. 2. No signing of any FA with more than 3 years of experience after the 20 step process. However, I may resign any of my unsigned free agents after the 20 step process and before training camp. 3. Renegotiating of contracts allowed only in the final year of the contract. 4. Ticket prices no higher than nearest FOFL franchise (New England Patriots). I cannot raise prices after a losing season. I can raise a maximum of 5% after a winning season, and a maximum of 10% after an appearance in the Super Bowl. 5. UFRA’s can only be signed to one-year deals, with one exception who may be signed to a 7 year deal, with x= rookie minimum, 2x, 3x, 3x, 3x, 3x, 3x 6. Franchise tag may only be used once in player’s career with my team. 7. Must maintain a full roster of 53 players each season. 8. Automatic signing of draft choices. 9. I may only accept CPU offered trades, with the exception that I may initiate a trade for any player that is listed as “demanding trade”. All CPU initiated trades must pass the “fairness test”. 10. All games are to be simmed. 11. No signing of FA's allowed after training camp, unless replacing a player on injured reserve during the season. Any FA signed to replace an injured player must have no more than 3 years of experience. 12. No real life NFL players can be used. This means that in the inaugural season of 2009, I cannot have any players on my roster with more than 9 years of experience. 13. No backloading of contracts. Maximum yearly increase of 25%. We will play our home games in the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Thunderdome, a new indoor facility located in Portland. The Thunderdome seats 67,500. Fan loyalty is at 60 as we enter the offseason. Our ticket prices are set at 37/43/62/109/2400/162000. Our coach is 48 year old Harvey Seibert. He has a career record of 88-67, with 5 playoff appearances and one Superbowl title. At $10,500,000 per year, he is the highest paid coach in the NFL, so expectations are high. His ratings are V/V/V/G/V/G/F/F/V/G/G/G/V/V. Our scout is 46 year old Tyrone Makuch. His ratings are V/G/V/G/F/F/V/P/G. He only has a one year contract for $370K, and it will not be renewed next year, as we will be looking for someone with better ratings in the secondary and young talent. We begin the 2009 with the Expansion Draft, along with the other expansion team, the Raleigh Copperheads. No real impact players are available in the expansion draft, so we sign some low salary players who may contribute, and head to free agency. FREE AGENCY The following players are signed: P Derek Randle, 3/3.07 DE J.T. Dixon 3/17.68 QB Gerald Thompson 3/29.81 C Ethan Phillips 2/6.77 S Maurice Campbell 3/12.06 T Jeffery Cooper 3/18.90 CB Jeff Burton 3/23.05 RB Renaldo Williamson 2/10.08 G Cornelius McNeil 3/13.45 LB Vincent Morris 3/16.30 CB Tom Back 4/22.20 LB Wally Burton 3/10.18 WR Josh Blanchard 3/12.96 DRAFT
We take 70 players to camp. The bad news coming out of camp is the huge bust of our #1 pick, Corwin Barnes. His ratings plummet to (5/27, 3/19, 50). He is cut, even though we take a big cap hit next season. We sell 56,100 season tickets. We go 1-3 during pre-season. REGULAR SEASON
We finish at 7-9, which isn’t bad considering the injuries that we sustained. After jumping out to a 5-3 start, we lost starting QB Gerald Thompson for the season with a broken tibia. We also lost starting RB Renaldo Williamson for five games with a strained knee ligament. Their replacements did a decent job, but there was a huge dropoff in talent that took us out of contention. 2010 SEASON
The following players are inducted into the Hall of Fame: Aeneas Williams Eric Davis Troy Aikman Vinny Testaverde Our Herb Score from last season was a dismal: 29/72/30/70, overall 49 We lost $77 million last season, and we’d better turn it around, or I’ll be looking for a new job. Here is our roster heading into the offseason:
Since we had a losing season, we hold ticket prices. None of our UFA’s is worth the franchise tag this season. Coach Seibert is good, but he is way overpriced at $10.5 million per year. We sign 56 year old Orlando Rizzo to a 5 yr/2.29 million deal. His ratings are F/F/G/F/V/G/G/G/G/F/G/V/G/E. We also sign 41 year old J.T. Leathers to our head scout positon, with a 5 yr/240K deal. His ratings are F/G/G/F/E/E/F/V/V. These two changes will immediately save us $63.3 million this season. The Atlanta Falcons sign Coach Seibert to a 3 yr/13.36 million deal. We wish him well. FREE AGENCY Before we enter free agency, we release DT Todd Sledman, DE Raymond Kemp, S Grant Oglivie, and S Kenny Nutt. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their contract: RB Renaldo Williamson 4/17.63 LB Sammy Prior 3/7.42 S James Cassidy 3/10.91 Our free agent acquisition in the first 10 weeks is DT Tyrell Sanderson (66/66), a 7 year veteran with the Redskins and All-Pro the past two seasons. We shell out a 4/31.40 million deal, and he signs with us in Week 4. In the second phase of FA, we sign Bengals’ TE Cornell Fenno (49/52) to a 3/8.03 million deal. This is less than our UFA TE, Dennis, is asking, and Fenno has better ratings. At this point, we are severely strapped for cap room, in part due to the hit we took by cutting our #1 draft pick bust last season. We don’t make any more offers. DRAFT
San Diego offers us T Leo Pritchett (34/36) and their #2 in next year's draft for LB Vincent Morris. Ordinarilly, we would reject the offer, but we are severely strapped for cap room, and this trade will save us about $2.5 million this season. The trade easily passes the "fairness test" and we reluctantly say farewell to Morris. This leaves us enough room to fill out our roster to 53 with URFA's and head to camp. Post camp roster:
Our kicker busts, but everyone else seems to come out OK. We sell 53,900 season tickets and head to preseason. We go 1-3 during preseason, and lose starting LB Sammy Prior for 2-3 months. REGULAR SEASON
We start slow, but finish with a five game winning streak to garner a wild-card berth. Along the way, we suffer season ending injuries to center Ethan Phillips and DT Tyrell Sanderson. Also, RB Renaldo Williamson is injured on and off throughout the season. KEY STATS QB Gerald Thompson 249/420/2951/59.2%/16 TD/12 INT/81.5 RAT RB Renaldo Williamson 156/579/3.7 YPC/5 TD WR Rex Aikman 82/1117/13.6/3 TD WR Julio Stewart 72/903/12.5/7 TD TE Cornell Fenno 31/302/9.7/5 TD FB Benjamin Schreiner 30 REC/315/10.5/3 TD T Jeffery Cooper 38 KRB/34.1 BPct G Cornelius McNeil 27 KRB/29.0 BPct DE J.T. Gerald Thompson completes 19 out of 24 for 235 yards, 1 TD, and no INT’s. Starting RB Renaldo Williamson is injured, and his backups combine for 178 yards on 32 carries. Our defense plays well, holding to Cowboys to 228 yards and no points. Maine 7 at Green Bay 20 Our season comes to an end, as the Packers stuff our rushing attack, holding Williamson to 19 yards rushing. Packers’ FG kicker Daniel Pierce boots 3 field goals, and wins the MVP award. Pittsburgh defeats Carolina 12-10 to win the Superbowl. 2011 SEASON
Welcome Ray Buchanan to the Hall of Fame. Herb’s score: 64/68/71/72, 68 overall The good news is we turned a $77 million loss into a $52 million profit, and made the playoffs to boot. So we’re improving, yet still have a way to go. We stay with our coach and scout, and since we had a winning season, we raise ticket prices 5% across the board, still well below New England’s prices. Here is our roster headed into the offseason:
With only 26 players signed, and $8.6 million available in cap room, we’ve got some big decisions to make. The good news is that we only have two UFA’s, C Ethan Phillips and QB Grady Collins. Neither of these players is worth the franchise tag, and we won’t even make an effort to resign Collins. We release T Leo Pritchett and 13 year veteran DE J.T. Dixon. Dixon’s ratings have dropped to “fair”, and there’s no way we can afford to pay him top dollar. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the last year of their contract: CB Jeff Burton 4/28.14, G Cornelius McNeil 3/10.35, S Maurice Campbell 3/10.35, G Pat Van Pelt 4/18.99, DT Frankie Strickland 3/7.4, QB Gerald Thompson 4/39.80. The Steelers offer us their #1(34) and RB Cole Francis (48/70) for T Jeffrey Cooper. Cooper is our best lineman, but we are in a tight cap situation, so we accept the trade (after checking the “fairness test”). We will hit the FA market for one, perhaps two tackles. Cole only counts $840K against the cap this season, and it looks like he will beat out the injury prone Williamson for the starting RB job. FREE AGENCY Our Week 1-10 acquisition is T Rufus Brent (76/89) from the Chargers, who signs for 3/20.00 (About 1.5 million less against the cap this season than Cooper). Brent is arguably the best tackle in the game, garnering 1st team All-Pro status the past two seasons. We lose C Ethan Phillips, who signs a 2/8.88 contract with the Saints. In Weeks 11-20, we sign Chiefs’ LB Martin Knight (46/62) for 2/6.60 and Packer T Randal Duran (51/60) for 3/13.57. At this point, we will look to sign our own RFA WR Julio Stewart before training camp. Depending on our cap situation, we will try and sign RFA LB Paul Witt. We might have to release 10 year veteran LB Sammy Prior, but we will hold off on that decision. Our roster is in fairly good shape, with the exception of center and defensive end. We will hope to fill these starting positions in this year’s draft. DRAFT
After the draft, we resign RFA's WR Julio Stewart to a 4/23.57 deal and LB Paul Witt to a 3/6.78 deal. We fill out our roster with URFA's and head to camp. Here is our post camp roster:

Well, I screwed up and forgot to save my info from 2011. It doesn’t really matter because we had a very mediocre season, ending 8-8. Here are the final standings:

2012 SEASON
Please welcome the following players to the Hall of Fame: Brett Favre QB Packers Randall McDaniel G Buccaneers Victor Green S Jets Herb score from last season: 40/71/62/70 Score: 60 We turned a modest profit, clearing $13.3 million. We decide to stick with Coach Rizzo for one more season, although his ratings are starting to decline. This will most likely be his final season. We hire a new scout, 36 year old Byron Alston to a 5/260K contract. His ratings are V/V/G/V/P/G/F/F/G. He does have a poor reputation with kickers, but we feel that we’ve made a good choice with his youth and inexpensive price tag. Hopefully, his ratings will climb over the next few years. We keep ticket prices the same (non winning season), and designate LB Wally Burton as our franchise player. We need to cut some overpriced players to help with our cap situation, so we release the following players: CB Tom Back, RB Renaldo Williamson, LB Sammy Prior, DE Billy Joe Richmond, CB Robbie Ali, G Pat Van Pelt, C Andrew Fulton. We renegotiate S James Cassidy to a 1/3.05 contract. Unfortunately, he’s the only player that we can negotiate with at this time. FREE AGENCY During Week 1-10, we sign CB Harris Galloway (60/60) from Cleveland to a 3/20.55 deal. We resign our fine punter Derek Randle to a 2/3.12 contract, and we resign G Les Patton to a 3/12.09 contract. DRAFT 1. DE Steven O’Neil, Ball State (14/84) 2. CB Leon Small, Wisconsin (26/67) 3. S Rich Nelson, Washington State (36/54) 4. RB Vernon Strickland, Kansas (46/46) 5. C Hardy Ramey, Tulane (45/51) 6. LB James Loftus, Temple (18/34) 7. WR Kevin Buchanan, Montana State (37/37) We have a good camp, with no busts and some modest gains. Here is our roster heading into preseason:

We go 1-3 during preseason, resting our key starters and testing our backups. A few players are dinged up, most seriously DE J.C. Belt, who is placed on IR. We sign Charlie Naylor to a 1/550K contract.
REGULAR SEASON New Orleans 7 at Maine 24 Rookie RB Vernon Strickland fills in for the injured Francis, and gains 104 yards on 24 carries. QB Thompson tosses 3 TD passes, and our defense limits the Saints to 40 yards rushing. Our team is cursed when it comes to keeping starting running backs healthy. Our best WR, Julio Stewart, will miss next week’s game with a hip pointer. Maine (1-0) 34 at St. Louis (1-0) 31 Kurt Warner completes 24 out of 37 for 481 yards and 3 TD’s in a losing effort. Gerald Thompson has a good game for us, completing 22 out of 29 for 210 yards and 2 TD’s. Strickland fills in once again for Francis, and he gains 106 yards on 26 carries. Stewart will miss next week’s game, along with LB Witt, who is out with a concussion. Maine (2-0) 24 at Kansas City (2-0) 17 We rally with two touchdowns in the 4th quarter to defeat the Chiefs. RB Francis returns to action, picking up 72 yards on 15 carries, and All-Pro FB Schreiner catches 9 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. CB Harris Galloway comes up with 2 big interceptions to lead the defense. Julio Stewart will sit out one more game with a hip pointer. Atlanta (0-3) 7 at Maine (3-0) 34 Our defense holds the Falcons to 202 total yards. Francis leaves the game AGAIN with an injury, and Strickland comes in and gains 104 yards on 21 carries. Our backup running back is currently 7th in the league in rushing. Thompson completes 10 out of 13 and 1 TD before leaving the game with a sprained ankle. He is probable for next week’s game. We suffer a big loss, with our All-Pro FB Schreiner out for 3 to 5 weeks with a sprained neck. He is an integral part of our offense. Maine (4-0) 3 at New Orleans (2-2) 35 In our worst performance in franchise history, we are held to 2 first downs and 9 yards rushing. Thompson is a horrible 10 out of 32 for 46 yards and 2 INT’s. Minnesota (2-3) 3 at Maine (4-1) 20 Cole Francis has his first good outing of the season, rushing for 100 yards and 1 TD on 16 carries. Thompson rebounds with a decent performance, completing 16 out of 22 for 193 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. On the negative side, we lose starting LB Martin Knight for the season with a torn knee ligament. We place him on IR, and sign 2nd year FA Tyrell Brilz to a 1/540K contract. Maine (5-1) 17 at Tampa Bay (4-2) 20 Albert Jeffries gains 132 yards on 22 carries to lead the Buccs to victory. DT Strickland leaves the game with a bruised shoulder and is questionable for next week’s game. Maine (5-2) 7 at San Diego (3-4) 23 A horrible all around effort, with Thompson throwing 3 interceptions. FB Schreiner is questionable for next week’s game, but he will get the start. Our offense has gone down the toilet since he went out. Carolina (3-4) 10 at Maine (5-3) 17 A huge but costly win, as we lose BOTH of our starting defensive tackles and our starting linebacker. DT Marcus Reilly breaks his leg, and he is done for the season. We place him on IR, and sign 2nd year FA John Daniels to a 1/600K contract. Our other starting DT, Frankie Strickland, will miss at least one week with a bruised shoulder. Our backup LB Loftus (who is now starting due to Knight’s season ending injury) suffers a hyperextended knee and will miss at least the next game. St. Louis (5-3) 20 at Maine (6-3) 16 A huge loss at home, as we move back into the pack at 6-4, putting our playoff hopes in jeopardy. We have a bye week to lick our wounds. Maine (6-4) 27 at Carolina (3-7) 31 What can I say? The Panthers score all 31 points in the 4th quarter to erase a 27-0 deficit. If the playoffs were to start this week, we would not get a berth. So we go from being 5-1 to no longer controlling our own destiny. I have 4 starters who are questionable next week, and all 4 of them will start. Maine (6-5) 8 at San Francisco (9-2) 23 Another pathetic effort. I am benching QB Thompson, whose QB rating has dropped to 67.9. Los Angeles (6-6) 0 at Maine (6-6) 6 Our defense holds the Earthquakes to 103 total yards, as we keep our faint playoff hopes alive. Maine (7-6) 26 at Atlanta (3-10) 20 A gutsy performance by reserve running back Vernon Strickland saves the day. Strickland gains 161 yards on 26 carries. QB Dobbs, starting for the benched Thompson, completes 15 out of 22 for 102 yards and 1 TD. San Francisco (10-4) 14 at Maine (8-6) 20 Looks like we made the right decision with the QB change. Dobbs completes 21 out of 34 for 260 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. WR Julio Stewart hauls in 8 receptions for 134 yards and 1 TD. Philadelphia (9-6) 10 at Maine (9-6) 17 Shane Dobbs hits Rex Aikman with a 29 yard TD pass late in the 4th quarter for the win. Dobbs completes 18 out of 25 for 223 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. We rush for 143 yards and hold the Eagles to 43 yards rushing. We finish at 10-6 to get the #5 seed in the NFC, as all 3 wildcard teams come from our division! The loss eliminates the Eagles from the playoffs. 2013 SEASON
Herb Score from last year: 62/78/65/70 Overall: 69 Please welcome the following players to the Hall of Fame: Marvin Harrison Ty Law Dewayne Washington Marshall Faulk We have two retirees: G Cornelius McNeil and T Rufus Brent. So much for offensive line cohesion this season. We made a profit of $30.5 million, an increase of 129% from the previous year. Financially, we’re headed in the right direction. After much consideration, I decide to keep Coach Rizzo and Head Scout Alston for another season. Our offseason roster looks like this:
Since we had a winning season, we raise ticket prices 5% across the board (still below New England’s prices). Our fan loyalty increases slightly to 63. We have 4 UFA’s, and only one is worth the franchise tag, LB Burton, and house rules prohibit me from using the tag on him again. We release T Alvin May and LB James Loftus. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players (in the last year of their current contract): RB Cole Francis 3/14.86, T Randal Duran 3/16.56, S Maurice Campbell 3/11.13, and DT Tyrell Sanderson 3/13.74. FREE AGENCY Of our UFA’s, I feel it is critical that we resign LB Burton, and we offer him a hefty 3/16.03 contract, which he accepts in Week 1. Since Rufus Brent retired, we make a big play for Denver T Tracy Abney (60/70), offering him a 4/27.64 contract. He signs with us in Week 4. In Week 9, TE Cornell Fenno signs a 1/ 2.62 deal with San Francisco. In Week 20, we sign Detroit G Gary Goosey (38/56) to a 5/17.85 deal. Before the draft, we sign RFA FB Schreiner to a 3/6.58 deal. Our critical needs going into the draft are TE, G, and LB. DRAFT
After the draft, Los Angeles offers us their #2 pick in next year's draft in exchange for WR Julio Stewart. We ponder it and decide to accept it for two reasons. First, we already have a decent corps of receivers for our run oriented offense. Stewart's talent is somewhat wasted in our scheme. Second, the trade frees up about $6 million in cap space, which enables us to resign two of our UFA's, LB Martin Knight and S James Cassidy. We also have enough left over to sign 10 URFA's (bringing our roster to 53), plus some insurance money for injuries during the season. Here is our post-camp roster:
The bad news is that our #1 pick, Dykstra is a bust. Arrrghhhhh!!!! The good news is that our 6th round redliner DE Soriano has a major breakout during camp. [This message has been edited by Vegas Vic (edited 03-15-2001).] |

We go 2-2 in the preseason. Waske and O’Neill are out 2 to 3 months, and Wescott is out 3 to 5 weeks. We decide to cut loose Dykstra, and we’ll take a big cap hit next season.
REGULAR SEASON Maine 23 at Philadelphia 7 Gerald Thompson completes 19 out of 30 for 251 yards and 2 TD’s. Rex Aikman hauls in 10 catches for 152 yards and 1 TD. Our defense holds the Eagles to 203 total yards. Carolina (1-0) 6 at Maine (1-0) 13 Cole Francis rushes for 126 yards on 20 carries, and Thompson completes 22 out of 37 for 184 yards and 1 TD. Washington (2-0) 30 at Maine 40 (2-0) Cole Francis rushes for 141 yards and 2 TD’s, and Thompson completes 16 out of 23 for 213 yards and 3 TD’s to lead us to victory in this offensive shootout. San Francisco (2-1) 21 at Maine (3-0) 45 Gerald Thompson completes 23 out of 35 for 250 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Harris Galloway runs an interception back 77 yards for a TD to lead the defense. Maine (4-0) 24 at Atlanta (1-3) 14 Cole Francis rumbles for 146 yards and 2 TD’s and Thompson completes 23 out of 37 for 173 yards and 1 TD. He hyperextends his elbow, and will be held out of next week’s game. Blake Soriano will miss next week’s game with a bruised shoulder, so we’re down to our 3rd string DE. Maine (5-0) 0 at San Francisco (2-3) 31 The Niners embarrass us, as our backup QB Shane Dobbs throws 3 interceptions, one of which is run back for a touchdown. Our rushing game is stuffed, 36 yards on 24 carries. Niners’ QB Mark Hanson lights up our secondary, going 21 out of 29 for 286 yards and 3 TD’s. We get a bye next week, which is good because we have some nagging injuries that need to be healed. Maine (5-1) 31 at N.Y. Jets 10 (3-4) Gerald Thompson returns to action, completing 19 out of 31 for 200 yards and 2 TD’s. Francis adds 78 yards on 15 carries. We move to 6-1 and host 6-2 New Orleans in a huge game next week. Unfortunately, starting CB Jeff Burton will miss the game due to a strained knee ligament. New Orleans (6-2) 10 at Maine 20 (6-1) A capacity Thunderdome crowd watched the Moose take command of the division with a convincing victory. The defense gave up some yardage, but managed to keep the Saints out of the endzone for 59 minutes and 34 seconds. Gerald Thompson had another fine outing, completing 19 out of 29 for 309 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT (his first of the season!). Francis added 82 rushing yards on 16 carries. Raleigh (4-4) 24 at Maine (7-1) 20 We run 84 plays from scrimmage to 41 for Raleigh, outgain the Copperheads 440 to 197, and out first down them 26 to 13, but as the old saying goes, the only stat that truly matters is the final score. The biggest play of the game came early in the fourth quarter, when with the score tied 17-17, Copperhead DB Tony Roark picked off an errant pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. Cole Francis had a fine effort in a losing cause, gaining 120 yards on 24 carries. We lose another starter, as guard Les Patton suffers a possible career ending knee injury. We place him on IR and sign 3rd year FA Tito Strong to a 1/710K contract. Chicago (7-2) 6 at Maine (7-2) 13 In a throwback game to the George Halas era, we pound the ball 38 times for 221 rushing yards, including 100 yards on 22 carries from Cole Francis, who scored the game’s only touchdown. Our defense dominated the Bears, holding them to 127 total yards. This was probably the biggest gut check in franchise history, with backup center Hardy Ramey moving to right guard and playing a fine game. Maine (8-2) 3 at New Orleans (7-3) 30 The Saints dominate, outgaining us 424 to 211. Brandon Dees leads the way, rushing for 1 TD, and completing an astonishing 21 out of 24 passes for 310 yards and 1 TD. The loss drops us into a tie with the Saints for the division lead. St. Louis (1-10) 12 at Maine (8-3) 21 We win and remain in a tie for first place, but that’s where the good news ends. Starting QB Gerald Thompson goes out with a broken jaw, and he might be out for the season. Backup Shane Dobbs hits 10 out of 15 attempts for 136 yards and 1 TD. He’s been complaining about playing time, so now he’ll get his chance to put up or shut up. Atlanta (5-7) 16 at Maine (9-3) 21 Dobbs puts his money where his mouth is, garnering the game’s MVP with a 21 out of 32 effort for 282 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our defense holds the Falcons to 165 total yards. The victory, coupled with the Saints’ loss to Raleigh, gives us sole possession of first place in the division. Maine (10-3) 17 at Carolina (4-9) 20 A loss of monumental proportions, dropping us into a 3-way tie for the division lead with New Orleans and San Francisco. As a matter of fact, if the playoffs were to begin now, we would be a wildcard entry. Carolina kicks the winning field goal with 10 seconds left in the game. A 20 carry, 133 yard effort by Francis is spoiled by Shane “Disgruntled” Dobbs, who throws 2 costly interceptions. Maine (10-4) 12 at Indianapolis (5-9) 27 Dobbs single-handedly loses the game for us, throwing for 0 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, one of which is returned 72 yards for a touchdown. His playing time rating has returned to a humble “content”, which is certainly appropriate for his pathetic 62.5 QB rating. We are locked into a wildcard spot now; the only question on this sinking ship is whether we will play at home or away in the first round. Maine (10-5) 22 at St. Louis (3-12) 11 Cole Francis steps up in this one, rushing for 116 yards and 1 TD on 21 carries. Dobbs is 19 out of 29 for 230 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Our defense holds the Rams to 204 total yards. The win gives us the #4 seed in the NFC, and a first round game at home against the Saints.

QB Dobbs was 18 out of 24 for 212 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. The defense came up with 3 big interceptions. Starting QB Gerald Thompson is upgraded from “out” to “doubtful” for next week’s game at San Francisco. Maine 15 at San Francisco 30 49ers RB Donnie Lyle rambles for 127 yards on 26 carries, and we are outgained 414 to 157 as the game was not as close as the final score indicates. Down 30-0, we score two touchdowns in the 4th quarter to make the game respectable. We can only sit and ponder the “what ifs” regarding Thompson’s injury. We release a few players and resign two of our UFA’s for next season. DT Frankie Strickland signs a 4/28.53 contract and DE Josh Wallen signs a 5/38.83 contract. 2014 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2013: 72/69/62/82 Overall: 72 Please welcome Robert Griffith to the Hall of Fame. We increased our profit to $36.4 million, and 18% increase over the previous year. After careful consideration, we decide to make a change at head coach. We sign 60 year old Brant Foster to a 3/6.2 million contract. Foster has no head coaching experience. He is rated “excellent” in motivation, discipline, offense play call and avoid injury. He is rated “very good” in quarterbacks, young talent and defense play call. His remaing ratings are all “good” and “fair”. We decide to stick with our scout for this year. Our fan loyalty has increased to “70”, and since we had a winning season last year, we raise ticket prices 5% across the board (still lower than New England’s prices). Here is our roster before the free agency period: EA.com Front Office Football 2001 We designate WR Rex Aikman as our franchise player. I receive a trade offer from St. Louis. They offer me their #1 pick this year for QB Gerald Thompson, but the trade does not pass the fairness test, so I decline. The Chiefs offer me their #1 pick for breakout DE Soriano, and this one passes the test. I accept their offer. Now for some very difficult cuts. We decide to release QB Thompson. He has proven to be an accurate and effective QB in our offense, but his salary has ballooned to one of the highest in the league. Besides, our #2 pick from last year still has all of his potentials in the 80’s and 90’s, so we’re hoping for him to breakout this season. For insurance, we still have Dobbs. Even though he played poorly at the end of the season, we hope he returns to his previous form. We also decide to release 12 year veteran CB Jeff Burton. He is an above average player, but his salary has really ballooned, and our 3rd year man, Leon Small, looks like he’s ready to step up this year. We also release G Les Patton, who never fully regained his strength after his injury, and now his run blocking rating has dropped to a “12”. Finally, we release two LB’s, Martin Knight and Jimmy Newton. We renegotiate the contract of CB Harris Galloway to a 4/26.96 deal. FREE AGENCY In the first 10 week stage, we sign Colts’ G Broderick Manning (43/50) to a 3/15.17 deal. He wasn’t our first or second choice, but the two guys we really wanted signed huge money contracts, so we were eventually happy to pick up Manning, who is a pretty good run blocker. During this time, we also sign our own UFA linebacker Paul Witt to a 3/14.17 contract. In the second 10 week stage, we resign our punter, Derek Randle, to a 2/2.72 deal. We lose our kicker, Deion Jameson, to the Packers for a 3/5.70 deal; however, we weren’t interested in resigning him after only making 25 out of 37 field goals last season. We’ll look to the draft to get a new kicker. Finally, in week 20, we sign 2nd year tackle Ian Barrett (20/55) to a 3/3.72 deal (with no bonus). He’s not the answer to our need for a starter, but we need some insurance headed into the draft. DRAFT We have four picks in the first two rounds. Our immediate needs are at tackle and kicker. We also need depth at guard, linebacker, running back and tight end.
We release DT Marcus Reilly, fill up our roster with URFA’s and head to camp. Post camp roster: Realistically, we took a step backward in our talent this year, because of salary cap problems. We should contend for a playoff spot, but I do not believe that this is a championship caliber team. Our fans, however, might not be too understanding as they have high expectations. We sell 58,700 season tickets. PRESEASON We have our finest preseason ever, going 3-1. This is significant because we always hold out our best players and test our reserves. We make it through without any significant injuries. Our 2nd year QB, Daryl Ericson, completes 37 out of 64 passes for 445 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s during preseason. He is nipping at the heels of Shane Dobbs for the starting position. REGULAR SEASON Maine 17 at Atlanta 8 We open up with an impressive road win. Shane Dobbs completes 26 out of 35 passes for 277 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Cole Francis churns out 101 yards on 19 carries. We are a bit concerned about our performance in the red zone. In five trips, we only get one touchdown and four field goals. Our defense is dominant, holding the Falcons to 152 total yards. Maine (1-0) 17 at St. Louis (1-0) 20 We lose a heartbreaker in OT, as Rams’ kicker Bobby Benton boots a 35 yard field for the victory. In a losing effort, Cole Francis rushes for 117 yards and 1 TD on 14 carries. Our rookie kicker misses two critical field goals. Carolina (1-1) 11 at Maine (1-1) 21 Cole Francis electrifies the Thunderdome crowd in our home opener, rushing for 126 yards on 18 carries, including a 51 yard TD run for the game’s first score. Dobbs hits a meager 7 out of 20 for 76 yards and 1 TD. Many of the Moose faithful are clamoring for Ericson to take over the starting job. New Orleans (2-1) 29 at Maine (2-1) 17 Saints QB Brandon Dees rips our secondary for 332 yards. The Saints’ defense stuffs Cole Francis, holding him to 20 yards rushing. It was tight for 3 quarters, but the Saints outscored us 17-3 in the 4th quarter, and pulled away for the victory. Starting CB Harris Galloway and starting LB Roger Hansen leave the game with bruised sternums, and both will sit out next week. Atlanta (0-4) at Maine (2-2) Rookie kicker Danforth boots 5 out of 5 field goals, and our defense gives up only 119 total yards as we trounce the winless Falcons. Dobbs has a decent game at QB, momentarily quieting the critics with a 19 for 33 performance, 233 yards and 2 TD’s. Maine (3-2) 3 at New Orleans (4-1) 31 The Saints complete their season sweep in a very disappointing game for us . We outgain the Saints 255 to 200, but three critical turnovers spell our doom, the worst being a Dobbs’ interception that is returned 78 yards for a touchdown by the Saints’ Terrell Leemans. For the game, Dobbs is a horrid 18 out of 40 for 206 yards, 0 TD’s and 2 INT’s. We make a decision to bench Dobbs and turn over the starting job to Erickson next week. Maine (3-3) 14 at Tampa Bay (3-3) 24 We fall to 3-4 in another disappointing loss. Cole Francis rushes for 143 yards and 2 TD’s on 11 carries in a losing effort. The game was actually closer than the final score, as the Buccs returned a fumble for a touchdown in the last seconds of the game just as we were moving in to attempt the tying field goal. Young Erickson had a quite debut, hitting on 11 out of 18 passes for 73 yards, 0 TD’s, 0 INT’s. He was at a disadvantage in his first start, as our best WR Rex Aikman sat out the game with an injury. Our injury situation is alarming; 2 out of 3 starting LB’s are out, starting DE Josh Wallen is out with a pulled groin, We release TE Ricardo McMurtry and sign LB Jeremy Dunkelberger to a 1/570K contract. Cleveland (2-5) 14 at Maine (3-4) 24 Not much to cheer about in the victory, as we lose Erickson for the season with a dislocated shoulder that will require surgery. He did throw 2 TD passes before leaving the game. On a brighter note, Cole Francis rushes for 163 yards on 23 carries. Our defense played well, limiting Brown’s QB Tim Couch to just 13 completions in 30 attempts for 248 yards. WR Aikman sits this one out with shoulder tendonitis, and we sure need him back soon. Maine (4-4) 24 at Carolina (4-4) 23 Coach Foster’s “excellent” rating in avoid injury is starting to sound rather dubious. Starting RB Cole Francis is the latest casualty, out for the season with a broken arm. You have to feel for this guy who has worked so hard to get to this point. He ends the season while currenly 3rd in the league in rushing with 800 yards, 6 TD's, and an outstanding 6.4 yards per carry. Francis’ backup, Sammy Grier, has been out the past 5 weeks with a stretched knee ligament, so we were forced to turn to our 3rd string running back, rookie FA Kevin Montreul, who rushes for 94 yards on 22 carries. Dobbs has perhaps his finest performance to date, hitting on 17 out of 23 for 169 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Aikman sits out again with shoulder tendonitis. New York Giants (1-8) 10 at Maine (5-4) 27 3rd string running back Kevin Montreul is injured on the first play from scrimmage, so we are forced to turn to 4th string RB Kevin Barnes. All he does is set a team record with 223 yards and 2 TD’s on 33 carries. Our defense holds the Giants to 221 total yards. San Francisco (6-4) 14 at Maine (6-4) 24 We claw our way back into playoff contention with a big win at home over the 49ers. The Niners shut down our rushing attack, but Shane Dobbs picks up the slack, completing 21 out of 34 for 233 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our defense gets revenge on Niners’ QB Mark Hanson, picking him off 3 times. This game is noteworthy in that none of the 22 players who took the field today were lost to season ending injuries; however, starting CB Harris Galloway will miss next week's game with a hip pointer. St. Louis (6-5) 21 at Maine (7-4) 31 Safety James Cassidy seals the victory on a 78 yard interception return with 59 seconds left in the game. The Rams had crossed midfield and were driving for the tying field goal prior to the interception. 4th string running back Kevin Barnes rushes for 84 yards on 14 carries, and hauls in a 68 yard TD pass from Shane Dobbs. Dobbs was 16 for 27 for 227 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Maine (8-4) 28 at Pittsburgh (6-6) 31 Dobbs hits 19 out of 33 for 297 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s in a losing effort. Rookie free agent Rob Melchior hauls in 9 catches for 204 yards and 2 TD’s. Steelers’ running back Bill Slye rushes for 118 yards on 23 carries. Maine (8-5) 19 at San Francisco (8-5) 31 Our playoff hopes take a serious dive, as 49er QB Mark Hanson completes 19 out of 27 for 258 yards and 3 TD’s. Maine (8-6) 16 at Philadelphia (7-7) 24 Our playoff hopes all but vanish, as Dobbs is injured early in the game, and we are forced to turn to our 3rd string QB, 2nd year free agent Terrell McGee. McGee does an admirable job for an undrafted player, completing 12 out of 22 passes for 237 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. Leland McVey hauls in 9 of those passes for 209 yards. We have a slim chance of making the playoffs if we beat the Ravens next week. The Ravens have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Baltimore (6-9) 17 at Maine 39 (8-7) Herb Danforth boots 6 out of 6 field goals in the victory. After the game, we are forced to sit back and watch the Oakland vs. Green Bay game to see if we get a wildcard berth. Our hopes are dashed as the Packers go on to win 19-6, and they lock up the #6 seed in the NFC. Overall, I’m proud of the effort put forth by the team this season. You cannot win in this league if you are forced to start 3rd and 4th string players at numerous critical positions.

2015 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2014: 56/70/58/80 Overall: 66 Please welcome the following players to the Hall of Fame: Simeon Rice Ray Lewis George Teague Mark Brunell Lawyer Milloy Sam Madison We made a profit of $23.1 million, down 36% from the previous year. We stay with our head coach, but decide to make a change in head scout. Our current scout’s ratings have remained stagnant for the past 3 seasons, even though he is young. We go out and spend some big money to haul in 58 year old Robert Conaty. His ratings are V/F/V/G/G/E/E/G/E. He signs a 3/960K contract with us, making him the third highest paid scout in the league. Our fan loyalty increases slightly to 73, and since we had a winning season, we raise ticket prices 5% across the board (still much less than New England’s prices). Here is our roster before the free agency period:
FREE AGENCY Week 1, we resign C Ralph Erickson to a 2/1.98 deal (no bonus). We don’t expect him to start, but he will give us quality depth at the position at a reasonable price. In week 4, DT Otis Waschke signs a 2/17.45 contract with Minnesota. We didn’t make an effort to resign him, as we have three other fine DT’s who will be competing for playing time. In Week 6, we sign G Claude Rebensdorf (61/61) to a 3/17.34 deal. In Week 11, S James Cassidy signs a 1/3.62 deal with New England. We didn’t make an effort to resign him because Rich Nelson offers about the same level of talent at half the price. DRAFT
We fill out our roster with URFA’s and head to camp. Here is our postcamp roster: We sell 59,400 season tickets. We go 2-2 in the preseason with no serious injuries to report. SEASON Maine 23 at Dallas 17 We open up with an overtime thriller in Big D. Daryl Erickson hits rookie 2nd round draft choice Fred Baker on an 18 yard TD pass for the game winner. For the game, Erickson connects on 25 out of 43 attempts for 269 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Linebacker Paul Witt leads the defense with a sack and an interception. Carolina (0-1) 21 at Maine (1-0) 29 Erickson has another fine performance, completing 22 out of 32 for 283 yards, 1 TD, and 0 INT’s. N.Y.Giants (2-0)0 3 at Maine (2-0) 30 Daryl Erickson completes 14 out of 18 for 192 yards and 2 TD’s as we roll to win #3. Our backs combine for 162 yards rushing, led by Shaun Hanson, who rushes for 67 yards and 1 TD on 11 carries. Linebacker Paul Witt records two sacks to lead the defense, which holds the Giants to 209 total yards. RB Kevin Barnes suffers a dislocated elbow, and will miss 2 to 3 months. San Francisco (3-0) 7 at Maine (3-0) 21 In a battle of the “Hansons”, Maine’s Shaun Hanson comes out on top, with 137 yards rushing on 15 carries. The Niners’ Mark Hanson has a tough day, completing just 18 of 36 for 190 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT’s. Shaun Erickson has a very workmanlike performance for the Moose, completing 18 out of 24 for 171 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Maine (4-0) 40 at Atlanta (2-2) 28 The Moose roll to win #5 with an outstanding overall performance. Shaun Erickson leads the way, completing 23 out of 31 passes for 210 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Shaun Hanson scampers for 131 yards on just 15 carries. Bubba Carter puts an exclamation point on the win with a 101 kickoff return. Maine (5-0) 42 at San Francisco (3-2) 10 In perhaps the finest overall road performance in franchise history, the Moose go to 6-0 on the season. Daryl Erickson completes 20 out of 24 passes for 189 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Shaun Hanson adds 92 yards and 1 TD on 15 carries. As a team, the Moose rush for 225 yards as they complete a season sweep of their division rival. Maine (6-0) 24 at Los Angeles (1-6) 35 An overconfident Moose team goes into Los Angeles and pays for it, as the Earthquakes register only their second win of the season. Juan Fisher torches our secondary for 4 touchdown passes. Maybe this game will serve as a wakeup call. St. Louis (3-5) 7 at Maine (6-1) 14 In a hard fought game, Shaun Hanson leads the way for the Moose with 150 yards and 1 TD on just 15 carries. Erickson completes 16 out of 19 for 176 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. What a difference a year makes, as so far we’ve only had one serious injury. Kansas City (3-5) 10 at Maine (7-1) 20 A packed house at the Thunderdome watched Shaun Hanson rumble for 145 yards on 19 carries, as the Moose improve to 8-1 on the season. The Moose defense made it a long day for Chiefs’ quarterback Eddie Flowers, intercepting the veteran three times and limiting him to just 19 completions in 40 attempts. Green Bay (2-7) 34 at Maine (8-1) 24 The Moose put on a pathetic display in front of the home folks, as the Packers record only their third win of the season. Lance Carrion lead the Packer attack, with 129 yards and 2 TD’s on 16 carries. 16-year veteran quarterback Tee Martin completed 21 of 28 passes for 182 yards. Maine (8-2) 19 at St. Louis (3-8) 8 Daryl Erickson completes 26 out of 32 passes for 185 yards and 1 TD, as the Moose complete a season sweep of the Rams. Hanson adds 64 rushing yards and 1 TD on 14 carries. New Orleans (7-4) 6 at Maine (9-2) 28 In the biggest game of the year to date, a packed house of 67,500 screaming Thunderdome fans watched the Moose make a statement for the division title with an impressive 28-6 thumping of the Saints. The Moose defense make life miserable for Brandon Dees, intercepting the All-Pro quarterback three times, one of which was returned 22 yards for a touchdown by linebacker Paul Witt. Moose quarterback Daryl Erickson had an efficient day, completing 15 out of 20 passes for 152 yards and 1 TD. The Moose rushing attack garnered 188 yards on 43 carries. Atlanta (7-5) 14 at Maine (10-2) 17 A lethargic Moose team sleepwalks to a victory over the game Falcons, who are fighting for a playoff spot. Both defenses played fairly well in this low scoring affair. We lose a key player, wider receiver Rex Aikman, who will miss 3 to 5 weeks with a hyperextended knee. Maine (11-2) 21 at Carolina (7-6) 23 Give credit to the gutsy Panthers, who are fighting for a wildcard spot. Phillip Butler boots the game winning field goal late in the fourth quarter. Quinn Clemons led the Panthers’ offense, with 112 yards on 26 carries. The loss drops us into a tie with the Chicago Bears for the #1 seed in the NFC. We have a difficult road ahead with two road games (at New Orleans and at Denver, both of whom are fighting for playoff spots). Maine (11-3) 26 at Denver (8-6) 3 Moose fullback Benjamin Schreiner made the most of his one carry, rumbling 77 yards for a touchdown as the Moose rolled to victory on a frigid day in Denver. The Moose defense held the Broncos to 165 total yards. There was little cause for celebration after the game, as the Moose learned that defensive tackle Frankie Strickland would have to undergo arthoscopic knee surgery and will miss the remainder of the season. We won’t be resting any players next week, because we are tied with the Bears for the #1 seed in the NFC. Plus, if we beat New Orleans, we can probably knock them out of the playoffs. Maine (13-3) 23 at New Orleans (9-6) 24 Stanley Stevenson hits Floyd Dixon on a 7 yard TD pass with 46 seconds left in the game to propel the Saints to victory. The loss relegates the Moose to the #2 seed in the NFC, behind the Chicago Bears. With the victory, the Saints garner the #4 seed. This will be the third time we face the Saints this year; we split the season series. New Orleans 19 at Maine 30 We had a little more incentive this time around. Shaun Hanson rumbles for 136 yards on 26 carries, and Erickson completes 18 out of 26 for 278 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. The final score is a bit deceptive, as the Saints scored a touchdown on the last play of the game. We outgain the Saints 448 to 296 and advance to the NFC Championship game in Chicago. The Bears defeated the Panthers 38-24, as QB Victor Rinehart completed an outstanding 24 out of 31 passes for 304 yards and 3 TD’s. Our secondary had better come ready to play next week. DE Steven O’Neill is questionable with a bruised ribcage, but he will get the start, as it is “do or die time”. Maine 34 at Chicago 27 Erickson plays a fine game, completing 25 out of 32 for 285 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Hanson grinds out 80 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Bears’ WR Seth Drake hauled in 8 receptions for 171 yards and 2 TD’s in a losing effort. We advance to the Superbowl against Buffalo, who crushed Cincinnati 35-11 in the AFC Championship. Buffalo 9 at Maine 41 No contest as we hit on all cylinders in demolishing the Bills. Hanson rambles for 143 yards and 2 TD’s on 21 carries, and Erickson connects on 25 out of 32 attempts for 319 yards and 1 TD. Fred Burnett hauls in 7 receptions for 108 yards and 1 TD. 2016 SEASON
Herb’s Score from 2015: 100/67/59/93 Overall: 81 Please welcome the following players to the Hall of Fame: Chad Cota Edgerrin James Walt Harris Charles Woodson Michael Westbrook We made a profit of $29.1 million, up 9% from the previous year. We are happy with Coach Foster’s performance last season, so we don’t even consider making a change. However, in an effort to increase our profits, we say farewell to Robert Conaty and welcome back 40 year old Byron Alston to the head scout position. Alston’s ratings have creeped up slightly, and we sign him to a 5/400K contract. This move will give us an immediate savings of about $25.2 million in scouting costs. We are hoping that his ratings will continue to improve over the next several years. Since we won the Super Bowl, we are entitled to raise ticket prices by up to 10% per the house rules. Our fan loyalty has jumped to 82, and we raise the prices 10% across the board, except the sideline tickets (which are raised only 8% to be equal with New England’s prices). We have a number of UFA’s this year, and after careful evaluation, we designate FB Benjamin Schreiner as our franchise player. Not including Schreiner, there are four UFA’s who I believe are critical to be resigned: DE Steven O’Neill, T Randal Duran, TE Rex Burnett and S Rich Nelson. I’d like to resign punter Derek Randle, but I’m not going to pay an inflated price. I won’t make an effort to resign RB Cole Francis or LB Wally Burton, because we have good players ready to fill in at those positions. I’m also not going to resign CB Leon Small, who has been complaining about playing time and is asking for outrageous money. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the last year of their current contract: FB Walt Giroux 2/1.51, C Ralph Erickson 2/2.12, LB Paul Witt 3/17.11, DT Frankie Strickland 4/32.59, and G Broderick Manning 3/14.42. We release our first round debacle of a couple of years ago, T Horace Chilton, and take about a $4 million cap hit next season. Philadelphia offers us their #1(12) pick in this year’s draft AND DE Leonard Fuller (47/47) for QB Shane Dobbs. I am surprise when the trade passes the fairness test, and I gladly accept. We get a quality backup DE (who would start on most teams), a mid-level first round pick, and we unload a QB in the last year of his initial contract who will be demanding big money next season. Besides, our 1st team All-Pro Erickson has relegated Dobbs to a backup role, so we just need to insure that we have an adequate backup. FREE AGENCY We decide to make a big move for CB James Stevens, but unfortunately he signs an astronomical contract with New England in Week 4. In the meantime, we nail down our offers to our own UFA’s. DE Steven O’Neill resigns for 3/28.31, T Randal Duran resigns for 3/27.11, S Rich Nelson signs for 3/18.23, and TE Rich Burnett resigns for 3/11.48. Since we missed out on Stevens, we are still entitled to one new signing for the first 10 weeks. We look at the next best available corner, Lance Baugh (44/68) and offer him a 3/27.86 deal (lower than what our less talented crybaby Small is demanding). Baugh ponders for a couple of weeks before signing with us. We finish out the last 10 weeks by signing safety James Cassidy (48/48) to a 2/5.22 deal. We also resign our punter, Derek Randle, to a 2/3.06 contract. Of the players we didn’t try to resign, running back Cole Francis signs a 2/14.45 deal with rival New Orleans, and LB Wally Burton signs for 1/4.6 with Detroit. No offers were made to crybaby Small, safety Maurice Campbell (whose endurance has dropped to 23), and DT Tyrell Sanderson(whose run defense has dropped to 26). DRAFT
Good news from the box office as we sell 62,700 season tickets. Here is our roster coming out of a productive training camp: We go 0-4 in preseason, but that’s not important. What is important are six players we have on the injury list for the opening game. SEASON Maine 17 at New England 23 We start the season with a horrible offensive showing, rushing for just 40 yards on 28 carries. St. Louis (1-0) 15 at Maine (0-1) 19 Not much to cheer about offensively, but our defense plays well, holding the Rams to 212 total yards. Atlanta (1-1) 21 at Maine (1-1) 27 Our offense finally shows some spark, rushing for a combined 212 yards on 38 carries. Erickson completes 19 out of 29 for 216 yards, 0 TD’s, 0 INT’s. The final score is a bit deceptive, as the Falcons scored two touchdowns in the last 2 minutes of the game. San Francisco (3-0) 26 at Maine (2-1) 15 We fall two games behind the 49ers only two games into the season. Maine (2-2) 33 at N.Y. Jets (1-3) 24 We finally put together a good offensive effort, with Hanson rushing for 111 yards on 18 carries, and Erickson completing 20 out of 23 for 236 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Detroit (2-2) 17 at Maine (3-2) 14 Our season of mediocrity continues with our second home loss. Detroit holds us to 226 total yards. Maine (3-3) 24 at Atlanta (2-3) 10 In a must-win game, Hanson steps up, rushing for 112 yards on 13 carries. Erickson hits on 17 out of 29 passes for 152 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Leyland McVeigh hauls in 5 catches for 66 yards and 3 TD’s. Buffalo (4-4) 28 at Maine (4-3) 21 Back to .500 with another home loss. Buffalo shuts down our rushing attack, and Erickson does a masterful job with 21 out of 38 completions for 341 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s, but he gets no help from his teammates in the loss. Shaun Hanson breaks his ribs, and is out until the playoffs (which is rather presumptuous of us to assume that we’ll even make the playoffs). Maine (4-4) 40 at St. Louis (4-5) 21 Sammy Greer rushes for 120 yards on 15 carries, and Erickson completes 17 out of 32 for 210 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. The defense wins this one for us, as Reggie Tate runs back an interception and Reggie Croel runs back a fumble. Washington (6-3) 23 at Maine (5-4) 29 We manage to stay above .500 for the first time this season behind a 191 yard rushing performance from Sammy Greer. Erickson adds 240 yards through the air, and our defense holds the Redskins to 22 yards rushing. The injury report doesn’t look good. Three out of our four defensive tackles are injured. Maine (6-4) 6 at New Orleans (5-5) 34 Not much to say. They outgain us 480 to 142 and dominate in every phase of the game. Carolina (3-8) 31 at Maine (6-5) 34 Herb Danforth kicks a 40 yard field goal as time expires to complete a come from behind victory over a mediocre Carolina team. Maine (7-5) 41 at San Francisco (9-3) 21 An incredible performance by Erickson, who completes 32 out of 41 passes for 342 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Greer adds 101 yards on 19 carries. We lose starting WR Rex Aikman with a knee injury. He will likely be out through the playoffs. New Orleans (7-6) 30 at Maine (8-5) 31 Tommy Ford scored on a 69 yard punt return with 58 seconds left in the game, as the Maine Moose rallied to defeat the New Orleans Saints. The win overshadowed an outstanding performance by Saints quarterback Brandon Dees, who completed 30 out of 42 passes for 482 yards and 1 TD. Maine (9-5) 21 at Chicago (8-6) 31 Daryl Erickson left the game early with an injury, and the Moose could never get in gear as the Bears rolled to victory behind QB Donald Ferro, who threw four touchdown passes. Maine (9-6) 17 at Carolina (3-12) 13 We manage to squeak one out against the pathetic Panthers. The win, coupled with the 49ers loss to the Jets, gives us the division title, and believe it or not, the #1 seed in the NFC.

Our opening opponent will be the St. Louis Rams, who defeat the Bears in impressive fashion, 38-17. Rams’ QB Sammy Bittner was the Offensive Player of the Week, completing 21 out of 31 for 289 yards and 2 TD’s. We swept the Rams during the regular season, and it’s always hard to beat a team 3 times in one year. St.Louis 20 at Maine 23 Herb Danforth kicks a 48 yard field goal as time expires to lift us into the NFC Championship game. Frankie Strickland terrorizes Rams’ QB Bittner, sacking him 3 times. Moose QB Daryl Erickson leaves the game in the 4th quarter with a bruised shoulder, and his status is questionable for the NFC Championship. LB Roger Hansen will miss the game due to a hyperextended knee. Our opponent will be the Washington Redskins, who demolished the 49ers 41-16. Washington 14 at Maine 41 Daryl Erickson hits 18 out of 25 passes for 202 yards and 3 TD’s to lead the Moose back to the Superbowl. Hanson returns from his early season injury and rumbles for 100 yards and 1 TD on 13 carries. The defense plays one of its best games of the season, holding the Redskins to just 211 total yards. We have a monumental task next week, as we will travel to Denver to play the Super Bowl. The Broncos dispatched the Patriots 24-14 in the AFC Championship game. We’ve got a bunch of banged up players, but it’s time to crank up the old “willingness to use injured players” to about a 70, and let’s get it on! Maine 10 at Denver 17 We come up a bit short in a hard fought championship game. Erickson tried to make it through the game, but his bruised shoulder got worse as the game progressed, and he took himself out early in the 3rd quarter. Backup McGee could never get it going, and the Moose are forced to accept the runner up trophy this season. Overall, I’d say that this team overachieved this season. 2017 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2016: 95/73/60/69 Overall: 73 We welcome the two newest expansion teams: The Toronto Argonauts and the Montreal Allouettes. Please welcome the following players to the Hall of Fame: Dexter Coakley Sammy Knight Kurt Warner Jevon Kearse Our backup DE Leonard Fuller announces his retirement. Here is our roster heading into the offseason:
We decide to make a change at head coach, as some of our players haven’t been developing the way we feel they should. We hire 60 year old O.J. Nesbit, who has no prior head coaching experience, to a 3/3.0 deal (the 3rd lowest in the league). His ratings are E/V/G/G/G/F/V/F/F/G/V/G/V/E. We also bring in a new scout, 55 year old Fred Geiger, who signs a 5/500K deal with us (8th lowest in the league). His ratings are G/E/E/F/G/F/V/G/E. Fan loyalty jumps to an 82, and we raise ticket prices 10%, except sideline seats, where New England’s prices keep us from doing so. We only have one UFA, backup tackle Ian Barrett, so we don’t use the franchise tag this year. 2017 EXPANSION DRAFT We are required to expose five players for the expansion draft. We choose the following five: CB Lance Baugh, C Ralph Erickson, G Cary Goosey, WR Bubba Carter, and RB Gary Neri. The Toronto Argonauts grab Goosey and Erickson, and the Montreal Alouettes grab Baugh. I am actually glad to unload all three of these players. Goosey and Erickson would be backups for us this year, and Baugh would have started at CB for us, but his ratings have settled in at borderline “good”, and there is no way we could justify paying him top dollar (he would have counted $9 million against our cap this year). We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the last year of their current contract: CB Harris Galloway 3/20.75, DE Josh Wallen 3/20.75, G Claude Rebensdorf 4/22.83, WR Rex Aikman 3/18.38. We have 39 players signed and about $32 million in cap space going into free agency. FREE AGENCY We set our sights on Chicago Bears RB Leon Sheldon, a 2 time All-Pro who has avergaged 5.3 YPC during his 4 year career. He would be a great fit in our run oriented/short passing offense, with current ratings of 76 in breakaway speed, 93 in yards per carry, 97 in catching, 93 in catch frequency, and 91 in 3rd down catching. He also has good endurance (64). We decide to make an aggressive offer, 3/26.73, and he immediately signs with us in Week 1. In Week 16, Toronto signs our only UFA, backup tackle Ian Barrett to a 2/12.80 deal. DRAFT
We have a virtually full roster at this point, and our cohesion is good, so we sign a handful of URFA's and head to camp. Here is our post camp roster:
We are a bit disappointed at our #1 pick, guard Boston, but overall it was a pretty good camp. We are especially pleased with the progress of our 2 young centers, Altman and Benevides. Our 2nd year tackle, Sullivan, made huge gains during camp, and it appears as if he's about ready to start. Our box office reports selling 62,700 season tickets as we head into preseason. We rest our starters during preseason, and test our backups while going 3-1. We get a few players nicked up in the process, and we lose our fine backup running back, Sammy Greer, for 2 to 3 months with a sprained back. As we enter the regular season, we curse the NFL schedule maker, who has us opening with 3 consecutive road games, but that's not the best part. In weeks 6 thru 10, we play 4 consecutive road games! REGULAR SEASON
Maine 24 at Jacksonville 27 Daryl Erickson has his worst day ever, throwing 6 interceptions. Still, we almost manage to pull it out. Sheldon has a decent debut, rushing for 85 yards on 15 carries. Maine (0-1) 31 at Atlanta (1-0) 14 We get back on the winning track, as Sheldon rips the Falcons for 218 yards on 27 carries. Erickson atones for his horrid week one performance, hitting 17 out of 28 for 222 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Maine (1-1) 31 at St. Louis (1-1) 28 Sheldon rushes for 88 yards on 13 carries, and Erickson tosses 4 touchdown passes in the win. We are up 31-15 with 3 minutes left in the game, but the Rams score two late touchdowns to make it close. Baltimore (0-3) 17 at Maine (2-1) 27 Leon Sheldon delights a capacity Thunderdome crowd with 105 yards and 1 TD on 15 carries. Erickson tosses a couple of TD passes, and our secondary has a busy day, as Ravens QB Gerald Thompson puts the ball up in the air 51 times, but only completes 22 and throws 1 TD pass. Carolina (1-3) 17 at Maine (3-1) 24 Fullback Benjamin Schreiner shows his All-Pro mettle in this one, rushing for 48 yards on 8 carries, hauling in 7 catches for 89 yards, and throwing several key run blocks for Leon Sheldon, who rushes for 112 yards on 22 carries. Daryl Erickson hits of 22 out of 25 attempts for 223 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. We lose All Pro defensive end Steven O’Neil for 2 to 3 months with a dislocated knee. Maine (4-1) 27 at New Orleans (3-1) 28 Saints’ quarterback Brandon Dees hits Rick Rutherford on a 9 yard TD pass late in the 4th quarter for the win. With the victory, the Saints move out to sole possession of 1st place in the division. Sheldon rushes for 128 yards in a losing effort. Maine (4-2) 34 at Carolina (1-6) 6 A good all around team effort, with the defense holding the Panthers to just 2 field goals and 150 total yards. Our league leading rusher, Sheldon, only runs for 51 yards, but it’s a case of “pick your poison”, as the team ends up with 146 yards rushing, and 18 out of 24 for 197 yards and 1 TD by Erickson. We lose starting wide receiver Rex Aikman for the season with a torn bicep. We place him on IR and sign 2nd year FA Lorenzo Poston to a 1/880K contract. Maine (5-2) 38 at San Francisco (3-5) 28 Leon Sheldon rumbles for 117 yards and 2 TD’s on 27 carries, and Erickson has a good day, completing 19 out of 28 for 252 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Alex Harlan runs an interception back 24 yards for a touchdown to spark the defensive effort. Maine (6-2) 27 at Detroit (7-1) 9 In a battle of first place teams, we catch a break before the game even starts, as the Lions’ offensive injury report looks like something out of a M.A.S.H. unit. Leon Sheldon continues his quest for the rushing title, with 134 yards and 2 TD’s on 24 carries. Erickson chips in with a workmanlike 15 out of 22 for 193 yards. Our defense makes life miserable for Lions’ QB Vinny Ackerman, sacking him 7 times. We are in a good spot at 7-2, after winning our 3rd out of four consecutive road games. Six out of our last seven games will be in the friendly confines of the Thunderdome. Atlanta (3-6) 3 at Maine (7-2) 45 This slaughter is over at halftime, as we go into the locker room up 35-3 and cruise to victory with the backups playing most of the second half. Sheldon racks up 62 yards rushing and 2 TD’s in just 2 quarters, and his backup, Greer, rushes for 106 yards on 17 carries in the second half. For the game, we outgain the Falcons 524 to 84, and out first down them 32-5. Erickson tosses 2 TD passes in the first half, before yielding to backup Terrell McGee in the second half. St. Louis Rams (6-4) 28 at Maine (8-2) 45 A capacity crowd at the Thunderdome saw the home Moose deal a serious blow to the Rams’ playoff hopes, as they rolled to victory. Leon Sheldon rumbles for 120 yards on 20 carries, and backup QB Terrell McGee, substituting for the injured Erickson, completes 17 out of 30 for 240 yards, 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Unfortunately, both of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns by Toby Garrison. The Moose defense played a fine game, giving up only one touchdown to the Rams’ offense. Maine (9-2) 20 at Washington (5-6) 14 Herb Danforth boots two fourth quarter field goals as we eke out our last road game of the season. Unfortunately, Daryl Erickson reaggravates his thigh injury, and will miss next week’s game. Sheldon found the going tough against the Redskins’ defense, rushing for 85 yards on 21 carries. San Francisco (5-7) 10 at Maine (10-2) 49 Backup quarterback Terrell McGee completes 21 out of 28 for 288 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 INT., as we rout the Niners and end their playoff hopes. Unfortunately, we lose our perennial All Pro fullback, Benjamin Schreiner, with a broken wrist. Erickson is still questionable, so he will sit out next week. We place Schreiner on IR, and sign 2nd year FA Cedric White to a 1/690K contract. This is a huge loss. Our second string fullback, Giroux, is a decent player, but no where near the caliber of Schreiner. Chicago (10-3) 38 at Maine (11-2) 24 Not much we can do in this one without Erickson. We felt like it was more important to rest him than risk further injury. If this had been a “must win” game, he would have started. Backup McGee throws 3 costly interceptions in the loss. Bears’ QB Donald Ferro throws 3 TD passes in the win. We’ll have to live with at least one more week of McGee, as Erickson is still questionable. Pittsburgh (10-4) 17 at Maine (11-3) 24 We take our hats off to the Steelers, who are fighting for the #1 seed in the AFC. They stuff Sheldon, holding him to a season low 63 yards on 21 carries. Backup McGee has a good game, completing 25 out of 38 for 211 yards, 2 TD’s, and most importantly, no interceptions. Erickson is stillquestionable (for the 5th week in a row), but unfortunately next week’s game is against the Saints for the division title and #1 seed, so he will start. New Orleans (12-3) 6 at Maine (12-3) 20 The gamble pays off, as Erickson plays and doesn’t aggravate his injury any further, and we gain the #1 seed in the NFL (remember, in FOF the Superbowl isn’t played on a neutral site). Sheldon finishes off the regular season in fine form, rushing for 149 yards and 2 TD’s on 33 carries. We deliberately altered our game plan to protect Erickson, and he completes 11 out of 20 for 146, 0 TD, 0 INT. |

PLAYOFFS
We get a first round bye, and sit back and watch the games. Our opponent will be the Detroit Lions, who eke out a 16-13 win at Philadelphia. The Lions aren’t quite as banged up as they were when we beat them during the regular season, so it should be a tough game. Erickson is still bothered by his deep thigh bruise, but he is listed as probable, so he’ll definitely get the start. Detroit 10 at Maine 41 We completely manhandle the Lions, jumping out to a 28-0 lead in the 3rd quarter, and cruising to victory. Leon Sheldon rushes for 188 yards and 5 TD’s on just 17 carries. Erickson plays an adequate game, hitting 19 out of 30 for 244 yards and 1 INT. Defensive tackle Frankie Strickland records 3 sacks, as our defense makes life miserable for Lions quarterback Vinny Ackerman. Next up, our old nemesis, the New Orleans Saints, whom we split with during the season. New Orleans 3 at Maine 34 Leon Sheldon does it again, rushing for 112 yards on just 13 carries. He also hauls in 6 catches for 72 yards and 1 TD. Erickson connects on 18 out of 28 for 232 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our defense plays an outstanding game, holding Saints’ QB Brandon Dees to just 106 yards passing. For the game, we outgain the Saints 408 to 196. Next up is a rematch with the Pittsburgh Steelers, whom we defeated during the regular season. That doesn’t count for anything now. The Steelers defeated the Denver Broncos 31-24 to take the AFC title. Quarterback Alex Freysinger had a fine day, completing 25 out of 33 for 273 yards and 3 TD’s. Our starting tight end, Rex Burnette is questionable with a broken finger, and it appears that his ability to perform will be hampered severely enough to start Glen Hatcher in his place. Pittsburgh 3 at Maine 24 There’s nothing like winning the Superbowl, but this one was a little bittersweet as starting QB Daryl Erickson suffered a serious knee injury early in the game. His prospect for a full recovery remains in doubt at this time. On the bright side, Leon Sheldon rushed for 115 yards and had 8 catches for 104 yards and was named Superbowl MVP. Terrell McGee played a decent game in relief of Erickson, hitting 11 out of 21 for 134 yards and 1 TD, 0 INT. Once again, our defense dominates, holding the Steelers to 200 total yards. 2018 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2017: 100/75/72/74 Overall: 79 Please welcome the following players to the Hall of Fame: Peyton Manning Steve McNair We won the Superbowl AND increased our profit by a whopping 122% to $86.4 million. This was accomplished by increased ticket sales ($20 million) coupled with decreased player bonuses (-$17 million from the previous year) and decreased coaching salaries (-$22 million from the previous year). The remainder was accounted for with slight increases in concessions and television revenue. We appear to be on the right track both on the field and in the beancounting department, but glory is fleeting in this business, and this is another season. Here is our roster headed into the offseason:

Ctown to introduce a little fan interaction.
As a former resident of the great state of Maine, it is with a saddened heart that I must express my displeasure at the Portland Moose choosing to identify with the entire state. As any good Mainer knows, everything south of Augusta is really a revolting extension of Massachusetts. Portland is mearly a somewhat attractive city where people from Boston go to say they are getting away from the City for the weekend. Portland brings riff raff and high tax rates to the real hard working citizens of the state. Besides, while they might be the largest city in Maine, I mean a small Mass city, they are hardly a representation of the state itself. And as we all know, they are a bunch of Massholes! Anyhow, depite the shared displeasure of many of the state's citizens, we shall contiune to root for the team. They do play, after all, wicked good football. Now where the heck is my soda? Finally, if the team owner ever plans on visiting, do not ask for directions. "Aye up. Ya chan't get theya from heya." Keep up the good work Vic, that was of course meant to be tongue and cheeck! Cheers [This message has been edited by Ctown-Fan (edited 03-19-2001).]

Thanks for the input and words of encouragement, CTown. We considered Portland Moose, but the alliteration with the double M's won out in the end. Thank goodness "Moose" won the statewide nickname contest over "Lobsters" and "Chickadees". Plus, we needed all of those bandwagoners to jump onboard, so we went with the regional appeal (ala Carolina and Tennessee). Of course now that we've won two Superbowls, the bandwagon is getting rather full. Even those carpetbagger Bush's up in Kennebunkport have jumped on the bandwagon.
We are making an effort to reach out to all of the state's residents. After all, every season we have our training camp up in Orono and play one of our exhibition games at the tiny Morse Field, even though we lose money on the deal. Glad to hear you're not a bandwagon fan! We'll count on your support during those lean years as well. [This message has been edited by Vegas Vic (edited 03-20-2001).] |

Well now that explains what the good football was that I saw out of my office window! My office two hundered yards from the end of Morse Field at Alfond Stadium.
Anyhow, keep up the good work, and it is good to see that you are in the know about Maine!

We stay with the coaching and scouting staff this season.
We raise ticket prices up to 10% (except where this is greater than New England’s prices) across the board. We designate Daryl Erickson as our franchise player. With our cap situation, we must release several players, including some overpriced starters. We release T Anthony Fannin, RB Gary Neri, T Randal Duran, WR Rex Aikman, S Tommy Ford, LB Roger Hansen, and RB Sammy Greer. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contract: S Rich Nelson, 1/4.43, DE Steven O’Neil 3/24.24, FB Benjamin Schreiner 3/6.88, TE Rex Burnette 3/14.86. We resign our franchise player, Daryl Erickson to a 5/72.51 deal. FREE AGENCY Our UFA defensive tackle, Earnest Gerak, is asking for the highest salary of all of the available UFA’s. We decide to make an offer to Tampa Bay DT J. R. Rayburn, one of the best DT’s in the league. In week 2, we sign him to a 3/33.48 deal. Several weeks later, the 49ers sign Gerak to a 3/28.21 deal. We resign LB Everett Copeland to a 3/20.96 deal. We resign T Dwight Holliday to a 2/18.40 deal. We resign both of our RFA centers: Roman Altman 1/5.0 and Marcus Benevides 4/23.08. We resign our punter, Derrick Randle to a 1/1.18 contract. DRAFT 1. T Winnifred Wayne, Cal.-Sacramento 2. S Tim Jocen, Hawaii 3. K Rickey Gonzalez, Notre Dame 4. LB Danny Compton, Northwestern 5. CB Deron Lewinsky, Stanford 6. FB Jason Kangas, Georgia Tech 7. RB Blake Hergett, Kentucky We fill out our roster to 53 and head to training camp. Here is our post camp roster: EA.com Front Office Football 2001 Our kicking game is in huge trouble, as our #3 draft pick turns out to be a huge bust. Unfortunately, the house rules prohibit me from signing another kicker except for injury replacement, so we'll have to suffer through it. We go 1-3 in preseason, and don't suffer any severe injuries, with the exception of reserve CB Donald Franz, who will be out 3 to 5 weeks with a dislocated knee. REGULAR SEASON
Maine 24 at Seattle 10 Leon Sheldon leads us to victory with 77 yards and 2 TD’s on 19 carries, and 3 catches for 95 yards and 1 TD. Erickson completes 25 out of 34 for 227 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. J. R. Rayborn leads the defensive effort with 2 sacks. San Francisco (1-0) 17 at Maine (1-0) 31 San Francisco QB Mark Hanson throws for 456 yards, but our defense picks him off 5 times in the home opener at the Thunderdome. Leon Sheldon leads the way, with 167 yards on 22 carries. Erickson completes 16 out of 24 for 218 yards, 3 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Mark Kripper hauls in 5 catches for 92 yards and 2 TD’s. Harris Galloway comes up with 3 big interceptions to lead the defense. Maine (2-0) 27 at Carolina (2-0) 17 Sheldon is held to just 42 yards rushing, but our defense steps up and takes up the slack. Steven O’Neil registers 2 sacks in the win. Maine (3-0) 7 at New Orleans 24 (1-2) We lose both of our starting defensive tackles and our starting defensive end, Steven O’Neil early in the game. The Saints take advantage of our injuries, rushing 38 times for 214 yards. Sheldon is held to just 67 yards on 21 carries. We learn O’Neil will be out 2 to 3 months (the second consecutive season with a long term injury) and Caldwell will be out 2 to 3 months with a broken foot. Maine (3-1) 20 at San Diego (1-3) 26 (OT) We lose a heartbreaker in overtime and fall to 3-2. Sheldon is held to only 54 yards, and Erickson throws 2 costly interceptions, one of which is returned for a touchdown. Carolina (3-2) 10 at Maine (3-2) 26 The Panthers shut down our rushing attack, so we take to the air, and Erickson comes through for us, hitting 26 out of 36 for 331 yards, 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Our defense plays a great game, holding the Panthers to just 186 total yards. Detroit (3-2) 0 at Maine (4-2) 10 Our defense wins it, holding the Lions to just 11 yards rushing and 142 total yards. Our offense doesn’t fare much better; however, Erickson does have some success through the air, hitting a modest 21 out of 30 for 167 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Defensive tackle Frankie Strickland registers 2.5 sacks. Our field goal kicker, 3rd round bust Ricky Gonzalez, misses two field goals. Maine (5-2) 19 at San Francisco (5-2) 17 A huge road win gives us sole possession of first place in the division. The win is costly, however, as we lose our other starting defensive end, Josh Wallen, for 2 to 3 months with a broken wrist. Leon Sheldon leads our offensive effort with 87 yards on 17 carries, and 4 receptions for 58 yards. Erickson hits 18 out of 27 for 267 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Atlanta 5-3 21 at Maine 28 (6-2) Once again, our running game is shut down, forcing Erickson to throw an uncharacteristically high 44 passes, completing 26 for 309 yards, 3 TD’s, but 2 INT’s (one of which is returned for a TD). All Pro fullback Benjamin Schreiner hauls in 9 receptions for 97 yards and 2 TD’s. Our defense holds the Falcons to 207 total yards. Starting safety J.B. Tate will miss next week’s game due to shoulder tendonitis. Denver (7-2) 17 at Maine (7-2) 3 Our anemic offense continues to struggle, as Denver humiliates us in front of our home crowd. Our defense plays well enough, but with no support from the offense we have no chance. Our injury situation worsens, with All Pro defensive tackle J.R. Rayborn out with a broken foot. New Orleans (5-5) at Maine (7-3) Starting QB Daryl Erickson is knocked out in the second quarter, and backup Donny Ring hits 14 out of 21 for 189 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Leon Sheldon finally gets back in the groove, rushing for 118 yards 1 TD on 21 carries, and catching 5 passes for 71 yards and 1 TD. We get another fine effort from the defense, as the Saints gain only 196 total yards. St. Louis (6-5) at Maine (8-3) A very hard fought game, with the Moose pulling it out in the 4th quarter. Leon Sheldon rushes for 155 yards on 23 carries, and Erickson returns to action, hitting 18 out of 31 for 271 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Fred Baker hauls in 5 catches for 159 yards and 1 TD. Gonzalez misses two field goals, but he does come through in the 4th quarter, kicking what turns out to be a game winning 55 yarder with 3 minutes left in the game. Maine (9-3) 21 at Atlanta 24 (8-4) This turns out to be a loss of monumental proportions, dropping us into a first place tie with the Falcons. But the news gets even worse. All Pro running back Leon Sheldon, the heart and soul of our offense, is lost for the season with a broken arm. Philadelphia (9-3-1) 7 at Maine (9-4) 21 Our defense wins another one, completely manhandling the first place Eagles, and holding them to just 41 total yards. Erickson has a masterful game, completing 24 out of 32 for 225 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT’s. Jonathan Barton, substituting for the injured Leon Sheldon, rushes for 63 yards and 1 TD on 18 carries. Unfortunately, Erickson hyperextends his elbow, and will miss next week’s game. Maine (10-4) 38 at Chicago 21 (5-9) We could not have asked for better performances from our backup QB and RB. On a snowy day at Soldier Field, Donny Ring completes 22 out of 34 for 283 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s, and Jonathan Barton rushes for 159 yards and 1 TD on 21 carries. Maine (11-4) 27 at St. Louis 17 (7-8) We lock up the #1 seed in the NFC. Barton rushes for 80 yards and 1 TD on 19 carries, and Ring plays a mistake free game, completing 19 out of 29 for 212 yards, 0 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Harris Galloway scores on a 71 yard interception return to lead our defensive effort. We don’t sustain any serious injuries in this game. With a first round bye, we’ll sit back and watch next week’s playoff games on TV.

The Buccs defeated the 49ers 24-21 in the first round. Mike Hernandez lead the Buccs’ offensive effort, completing 23 out of 32 for 303 yards and 2 TD’s. Our secondary will have their hands full with this guy. Erickson has recovered from his hyperextended elbow and will start. Sheldon is listed as questionable with his broken arm. He will not start, but will be #2 on our depth chart behind Barton. Wallen is questionable with his broken wrist, but he will start. Tampa Bay 12at Maine 32 We open the playoffs in dominant fashion, outgaining the Buccs 526 to 230. Leon Sheldon comes off the bench to see his first action since breaking his arm, and he rushes for 104 yards on just 10 carries. Daryl Erickson has one of his finest performances as a pro, completing 19 out of 29 for 284 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. On a sour note, we lose starting defensive tackle Frankie Strickland with a broken foot. Next week, we will host the Vikings in the NFC Championship game. The Vikings crushed the Cardinals 46-14, as quarterback Jamal Bradley threw for 312 yards and 4 TD’s. Minnesota 3 at Maine 31 Defensive back Harris Galloway runs back two interceptions for touchdowns and we rout the Vikings. Our offense decides to play smashmouth football, with Jonathon Barton rushing for 180 yards and 1 TD on 22 carries. Erickson only throws 16 passes, completing 12, for 100 yards and 1 TD. Our defense shuts down the Vikings, holding them to just 143 passing yards. We will have to travel to Denver for the Superbowl. The Broncos defeated the Dolphins 23-17 in the AFC Championship. They humilated us 17-3 at the Thunderdome earlier this season, and we’d love nothing more than to return the favor in the Superbowl. Their All Pro quarterback, Tito Forbes is doubtful for the game. Before the Superbowl, we resign LB Paul Witt to a 3/15.16 deal. Maine 10 at Denver 40 We get blown out of the building in a game that is over at halftime (31-0). The Broncos shut down our ground attack, and Erickson has his worst day ever as a pro, completing just 17 out of 39 for 137 yards, 1 TD and 3 costly INT’s. In a game that he was doubtful to even play in, Tito Forbes puts on a courageous performance, throwing 3 TD passes. Phil Walsh paced the Broncos’ ground game, rushing for 96 yards and a touchdown. With the victory, the Broncos rightfully take their place as one of the NFL's all-time dynasties, winning 4 Superbowls in 6 years, and 8 in the team's history. We have much to be thankful for, reaching the Superbowl again, but this loss will leave a bitter taste in our mouth as we head into the offseason. 2019 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2019: 95/73/64/82 Overall:78 Please welcome the following player to the Hall of Fame: Champ Bailey Our punter, Derek Randle retires after 18 seasons. We made a profit of $58.5 million last season. We seem to be on the right track, even with the strict house rules we’re showing good profits and contending for the Super Bowl on a perennial basis. We decide to stick with Coach Nesbitt for another season. We bring in a new scout, 53 year old R.J. Whiting, who signs a 5/200K contract (the LOWEST salary in the NFL). Even with the extremely low salary, we get good value with his ratings, which are G/E/G/G/E/F/G/E/G. By the way, this move will increase our profits by $13.5 million dollars this season. Since we made it to the Super Bowl again, to further increase our profits, we raise ticket prices by up to 10% across the board (except in the cases where this would exceed New England’s prices). Our fan loyalty now stands at a solid 95, so we expect to have a full house for every home game. We release K Ricky Gonzalez (major bust), LB Ethan Gunn, and T Dwight Holliday. Holliday has started for us for several seasons, and while he is still a fairly good player, his salary demands have ballooned tremendously. He would have counted $10 million against the cap this season, and there’s just no way we can justify that. We will look to free agency for a quality replacement. We renegotiate the following contracts of players in the final year of their current contract: DT Frankie Strickland 3/21.11, DE Josh Wallen 3/21.36, RB Leon Sheldon 4/27.52. We designate S Rich Nelson as our franchise player. FREE AGENCY We sign Steelers’ UFA T Kris Henderson (69/78) to a 3/29.11 contract in Week 2. We now have one of the finest offensive lines in all of football. Tennessee signs our outstanding UFA center, Roman Altman, to a 2/12.80 deal. We wish him well as we put an end to our “center controversy.” Fourth year center Marcus Benevides’ ratings have soared to a (77/93), and he is ready to anchor our outstanding offensive line. Carolina signs our UFA guard, Broderick Manning, to a 2/11.99 deal. We made no effort to resign him, as George Boston had already won the starting job last season after moving ahead of Manning. During the second 10 week phase, we sign Oakland UFA linebacker Lenny Tarpley (68/68) to a 3/14.98 deal. We were delighted to get a player of his quality in the final weeks, and he will help to shore up our linebacking corps. During this time, we also come to terms with our franchise player, safety Rich Nelson, who signs a 3/14.34 contract. Here is our roster headed into the draft:

DRAFT
Our biggest needs going into the draft are kicker, punter, wide receiver, backup guard, backup defensive end.
New Orleans offers us their 7th round draft choice for 5-time All Pro fullback Benjamin Schreiner. After we pick ourselves up off the floor from laughing hysterically, we decline the offer. We resign UFA defensive tackle Glen Caldwell to a 5/47.73 contract. We are spending a lot of money for 3 defensive tackles, but we feel that dominating the defensive line is extremely important. We release WR Jessie Crutchfield and LB Danny Compton. For our “special” URFA, we select WR Isaac Foreman and sign him to a 7/10.62 deal. We fill out our roster to 53 and head to camp. Post camp roster:
No major busts, and we are delighted to see our 5th round WR, Wayne Engleberger have a major breakout. We were worried about our rookie kicker (with our track record of busts at this position), but he appears to be doing fine. Our box office reports season ticket sales of 66,100 as we head into preseason. [This message has been edited by Vegas Vic (edited 03-26-2001).] |

We go 1-3 during preseason with no serious injuries. Let’s get ready to turn the Moose loose!
REGULAR SEASON Atlanta 0 at Maine 27 We open up before a packed Thunderdome crowd, and give them a dose of good old Moose smashmouth football. Jonathan Barton comes off of the bench and rushes for 115 yards on 14 carries, and Daryl Erickson completes an efficient 18 out of 27 for 185 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT. Our defense completely stuffs the Falcons, holding them to 116 total yards. Starting linebacker Everett Copeland will miss next week’s game due to a bruised shoulder. Maine (1-0) 12 at Tampa Bay (0-1) 13 Mike Hernandez completes 21 out of 31 passes for 311 yards to lead the Buccs to victory. Buccs’ kicker Ray Griswald boots a 21 yard field goal late in the 4th quarter for the win. Leon Sheldon rushes for 121 yards in a losing effort. Rookie kicker Derrick Kaplan hits 4 out of 5 field goal attempts for the Moose. Maine (1-1) 19 at St. Louis (1-1) 14 Leon Sheldon scores on a 15 yard TD run with 1:03 remaining in the game to lift the Moose to victory. Backup running back Jonathan Barton lead all rushers with 99 yards on 6 carries, including an electrifying 67 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. On a sour note, starting safety J.B. Tate will be out 2 to 3 months with a sprained back. Maine (2-1) 28 at New Orleans (2-1) 27 Rookie kicker Derrick Kaplan drills a 51 yard field goal as time expires to lift the Moose to victory in a thriller. The lead changes hands numerous times in this early battle for division supremacy. The spotlight shines on rookie wide receiver Wayne Engleberger, who hauls in 9 receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Defensive end Steven O’Neil will miss next week’s game due to a sprained neck. Carolina (3-2) 8 at Maine (3-1) 30 The Moose’s depth is tested in this game, and numerous players leave the game with injuries. Starting QB Daryl Erickson is knocked out early with a concussion, and Terrell McGee comes in and hits 17 out of 23 for 162 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. It appears as if Erickson will miss at least one game, perhaps more. Leon Sheldon breaks out of his slump with 189 yards and 2 TD’s on 29 carries. Kaplan is a perfect 3 out of 3 in field goal attempts. Unfortunately, the Moose learn that rookie wide receiver Wayne Engleberger will miss 2 to 3 months with a broken jaw. Maine (4-1) 20 at Atlanta (1-5) 24 We lose to the lowly Falcons, but that’s not the worst of it. To add to our injury woes, starting cornerback Junior Riffle is lost for the season with a broken ankle. The Falcons shut down our running game, and backup QB McGee can’t pick up the slack for us. Unfortunately, Erickson will have to sit out at least one more week. We place Riffle on IR, and sign URFA Dan Candidate (22/33) to a 1/660K contract. San Francisco (3-3) 10 at Maine (4-2) 41 We limp back into the Thunderdome and are rejuvenated by the raucous crowd. Backup QB Terrell McGee plays an outstanding game, hitting 25 out of 32 passes for 260 yards and 3 TD’s, 0 INT’s. Leon Sheldon leads the ground assault with 124 yards on 26 carries. We outgain the Niners 444 to 204 for the game. Injury prone linebacker Everett Copeland sprains his neck and will miss several weeks of action. Starting quarterback Daryl Erickson is upgraded to “probable” and will start next week’s game. Maine (5-2) 20 at Miami 16 (4-3) This turns out to be a hard fought road win against the game Dolphins. Leon Sheldon grinds out 82 yards on 18 carries. Rookie kicker Kaplan continues to impress, hitting both of his field goal attempts and extending his season’s performance to 20 out of 22 attempts. New Orleans (5-3) 7 at Maine (6-2) 34 The Moose save their finest performance of the season in this battle for division supremacy. Leon Sheldon rumbles for 148 yards and 1 TD on 30 carries, and Daryl Erickson shows no lingering symptoms from his concussion, hitting on 20 out of 33 attempts for 193 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Our unheralded defense holds the Saints to 193 total yards. St. Louis (5-4) 22 at Maine 28 (7-2) The Moose win in overtime, as Erickson hits rookie wide receiver Myron Dunlap on a 5 yard touchdown pass. Give credit to the Rams, who hang in the game in spite of running only 51 plays from scrimmage, compared to the Moose’s 91 plays. Leon Sheldon is dinged up early in the game, and his replacement, Jonathan Barton tears it up, gaining 174 yards and 2 TD’s on 33 carries. We outgain the Rams 513 to 204, yet the game goes into overtime. Buffalo (4-6) 10 at Maine 23 (8-2) Erickson lifts us to victory at home, hitting 19 out of 33 for 171 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our defense holds the Bills to 207 total yards. The victory is hollow, as we lose our other starting cornerback, Harris Galloway with a dislocated shoulder. Minnesota (6-5) 17 at Maine (9-2) 37 A fine overall team performance for the Moose. Sheldon grinds out 79 yards and 1 touchdown on 18 carries, and Rex Burnett hauls in 7 catches for 111 yards and 1 TD. Linebacker Paul Witt scores on a 53 yard interception return, and Kim Lane leads the special teams, scoring on an 81 yard punt return. We lose our 3rd cornerback, Deron Lewinsky with arthoscopic knee surgery. Our top two cornerbacks are already out. Maine (10-2) 3 at San Francisco (5-7) 31 Easily our most pathetic performance in the last couple of seasons. Damon Forbes shreds our makeshift secondary for 312 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Niners completely stuff our running game, holding us to a franchise low 29 yards rushing. Maine (10-3) 27 at Carolina (6-7) 9 A major gut check, as we rebound on the road against the Panthers. Our rushing game is ineffective, and Daryl Erickson picks up the slack, hitting 16 out of 24 for 235 yards and 2 TD’s, 0 INT’s. Defensive end Josh Wallen dislocates his shoulder, and will miss 3 to 5 weeks. Maine (11-3) 6 at Arizona (6-8) 13 What can you say about this one? A loss of monumental proportions against an inferior team. We drop to the #3 seed in the NFC. Sheldon rushes for 119 yards in a losing effort. Our 4th string cornerback, Alex Harlan, who is now starting, is questionable with a concussion. Unfortunately, he’ll have to start next week. Indianapolis (10-5) 10 at Maine (11-4) 17 This one turns out to be World War III between two teams fighting for home field advantage in their respective conferences. Leon Sheldon churns out 113 yards on 21 carries and fullback Benjamin Schreiner hauls in 8 receptions for 54 yards and 1 TD. Our defense holds the Colts to 152 total yards. Our injury situation is critical going into the playoffs. Even with a bye week, several key players are out.

PLAYOFFS
We sit back and watch the first round games on television. Our first round opponent will be the St. Louis Rams, who defeated Tampa Bay 20-10. Backup quarterback Melvin Gooden, subbing for All-Pro Sammy Bittner, completed 16 out of 22 for 258 yards and 2 TD’s. We won’t be able to key on him, however, since their 1,000 yard RB Lester Talley rushed for 207 yards and 2 TD’s in the win. We won two very close games against them in the regular season, and this one figures to be a nail biter. St. Louis 27 at Maine 16 Archie Falvey scores on a 62 yard TD run late in the 4th quarter to seal the victory for the Rams. Melvin Gooden finds our patchwork secondary to his liking, hitting 23 out of 35 for 276 yards and 1 TD. The Rams outgain us 403 to 317 as we close the chapter on a disappointing season that began with so much promise. 2020 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2019: 84/73/65/77 Overall: 74 Please welcome the following players to the Hall of Fame: Jon Jansen Darnell Fredrickson Defensive end Steven O’Neil announces his retirement after only 8 seasons in the NFL. The highlight of his professional career was the 2015 season, where he earned 1st team All-Pro honors, and recorded a team leading 15 sacks. He was our first round draft choice in 2012 out of Ball State. We wish him well as he moves on to his post-football life. We made a profit of $69.6 million last season, up 18% from the previous year. Coach Nesbitt’s contract is up, and we decide not to renew it. He has done a fine job for us, but his age is starting to become a factor, and his ratings are deteriorating. His legacy is a .763 winning percentage, three playoff appearances and one Super Bowl title. The Redskins are quick to sign him to a 3/5.42 contract. For his replacement, we hire 37 year old Wendell Klingler from the University of Tennessee. During his five seasons as head coach of the Volunteers, Klingler won four SEC Championships, finished in the top five every season, and this past season he won the National Championship with a victory over the Michigan Wolverines in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. We sign him to a 5/3.0 contract (the 2nd lowest in the NFL). His ratings are G/P/V/V/F/F/V/V/V/G/V/G/G/V. We also decide to make a change at head scout. We sign 62 year old Keith Jeffries to a 3/300 K contract (the 2nd lowest in the NFL). His ratings are V/V/E/G/G/F/G/E/V, and once again, we are delighted to get such quality for a low price. Our fan loyalty has maxed out at 100%. Since we had another winning season we are allowed to raise our ticket prices 5% across the board (per the house rules), except where this would exceed New England’s prices. Unfortunately, we are only able to bump the upper deck and endzone seats up 5%. The remainder of the prices remain equal to New England’s. Those guys won the Superbowl last year, but they don’t raise their ticket prices, even though their fan loyalty is “100” and they lost over $50 million last season. They’ve obviously got a real mental giant for their general manager. Here is our offseason roster:
We designate cornerback Harris Galloway as our franchise player. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final season of their contract: DT J.R. Rayborn 3/25.10, G Claude Rebensdorf 2/10.91, TE Rex Burnett 1/4.04, S J.B. Tate 3/14.99. We release WR Myron Dunlap, WR Isaac Foreman, C Brandon McMillan, and CB Alex Harlan. Cincinnati offers us their 3rd round draft choice for LB Everett Copeland. Copeland is a good player, but he is in the final year of his current contract, and his cap salary this year is over $8 million. We accept the trade, as we believe that our first round draft pick from last year, Billy Griffith, will be ready to start after training camp. We sign Jacksonville UFA All-Pro defensive end Andre England to a 3/28.02 deal in week 3 of the free agency period. Due to a lack of cap room, we don’t participate in any signings in weeks 11 through 20. Several teams break their cap on perennial All-Pro quarterback Sammy Bittner, and he ends up sitting unclaimed in the free agency pool. DRAFT We’re set at all of our starting positions, so we’ll be looking for depth at DE, LB, C, CB, and WR.
We need to sign 12 URFA’s to bring our roster up to 53, and we only have $400 K in cap space. In a difficult choice, we release our backup defensive tackle Glenn Caldwell, which frees up about $7 million. Unfortunately, if one of our starters gets injured (which is inevitable), we are in big trouble at this position. We designate WR (33/33) Cris Barlow as our special URFA, and sign him to a 7/10.62 contract. We fill out our roster to 53 with 11 1-year UFRA contracts and head to training camp. Here is our post camp roster:
We have a very productive training camp, with no busts and some modest improvements. Our box office reports that we sold out our 67,500 season tickets for the first time in franchise history. We have an outstanding preseason, with no injuries to our starters and an insignificant 0-4 record. We held out our best players during preseason, so the scores are meaningless. We did lose backup running back Steve Lovelace for the season with a knee injury. He underwent arthoscopic surgery and his prognosis is good for next season. REGULAR SEASON
Baltimore 20 at Maine10 An absolutely horrible beginning to the season. Quarterback Daryl Erickson leaves the game in the second quarter with a broken finger, and #1 wide receiver Wayne Engleberger (who missed 15 games last season) goes out in the second quarter with a sprained knee. Running back Leon Sheldon rushes for 145 yards and 1 TD on 18 carries. San Francisco (1-0) 10 at Maine(0-1) 16 Our defense wins this game hands down, holding the Niners to 163 total yards. Rookie linebacker Leslie Romeo records 7 tackles and one sack to lead the defensive effort. Backup quarterback Laxdall, substituting for the injured Erickson, completes 22 out of 30 passes for 207 yards, 0 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Erickson is upgraded to “probable” for next week’s game, and he will get the start. New Orleans (1-1) 26 at Maine (1-1) 23 Brandon Dees hits Floyd Dixon on a 9 yard touchdown pass with 4 seconds left in the game, as the Saints score 18 unanswered points in the 4th quarter in a come from behind win. The Saints only gained 192 total yards for the game, but the final 62 yards were all that mattered on the winning drive. Safety Rich Nelson will miss next week’s game with a hyperextended elbow. Maine (1-2) 13 at Tennessee (2-1) 22 In an absoultely pathetic effort, we are held to a all-time franchise low of 94 total yards. The defense played well enough for 2 ½ quarters, but eventually being on the field twice as long as the Titan’s defense took it’s toll. Defensive tackle Frankie Strickland is out 3 to 5 weeks. Maine (1-3) 21 at Atlanta (2-2) 17 In a “must win” game, our offense finally shows a little bit of spark, with Leon Sheldon rushing for 124 yards and 1 touchdown on 17 carries. Rookie linebacker Leslie Romeo continues to be a shining star on defense, with 8 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Carolina (3-1) 19 at Maine (2-3) 42 The Moose take the field with a sense of urgency and a chip on their shoulder, and proceed to slaughter the first place Panthers. Quarterback Daryl Erickson leaves the game in the second quarter with an injury, and backup Laxdall completes 9 out of 12 for 86 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Moose combine for 162 yards rushing, as they claw their way back to .500. Atlanta (4-3) 0 at Maine (3-3) 30 Our defense shines, holding the Falcons to 213 yards in the shutout. The Falcons do a good job stuffing our rushing attack, so Erickson takes to the air, hitting 24 out of 35 for 337 yards and 1 TD, 2 INT. St. Louis (3-5) 7 at Maine 17(4-3) Our defense shines again, holding the Rams to just 47 rushing yards. Our own rushing attack doesn’t fare much better, but Erickson is effective enough through the air, hitting 20 out of 30 for 212 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Engleberger hauls in 8 catches for 111 yards. Defensive tackle Frankie Strickland is upgraded to “probable” and will make his first start in five weeks. Tampa Bay (4-4) 9 at Maine 16 (5-3) It has already become apparent that the defense will have to carry this team, and they rise to the challenge again, holding the Buccs to 3 field goals. Maine (6-3) 27 at San Francisco 24 (5-4) 49ers’ quarterback Damon Forbes has a valiant performance, hitting 24 out of 32 passes for 349 yards and 3 TD’s. We lose starting cornerback Junior Riffle with a long-term injury (for the third consecutive season). He has broken ribs, and might return for the playoffs (if we qualify). Erickson has a flawless performance, hitting 19 out of 27 for 181 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Engleberger hauls in 7 catches for 103 yards and 2 TD’s. Maine (7-3) 10 at New Orleans (4-6) 12 Our defense does everything in it’s power to overcome our anemic offense, holding the Saints to 4 field goals and scoring our only touchdown on a 77 yard interception return by Deron Lewinsky. Unfortunately, our offense contributes nothing as we fall back to a precarious one game lead in the division. We only have one more home game (next week against the powerhouse Dallas Cowboys), followed by four consecutive road games to end the season. It looks like an uphill battle. Dallas (8-2-1) 3 at Maine (7-4) 34 Before a packed Thunderdome crowd, we finally play like a contender as we destroy the Cowboys. We go back to the basics, and in a good old game of smashmouth Moose football, Leon Sheldon rams the ball down the Cowboys’ throat, rushing for 189 yards and 1 TD on 23 carries. Daryl Erickson hits 22 out of 28 for 227 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Our defense picks off Dallas quarterback Deron Bible three times, and holds the Cowboys to 195 total yards. We have a tough road ahead, as we travel to St. Louis for the first of four consecutive road games to end the season. Tight end Burnett, guard Rebensdorf, and linebacker Tarpley are all questionable for next week’s game, but they all will start. It’s gut check time as we try and make a playoff run. Maine (8-4) 21 at St. Louis (3-9) 23 Roman West kicks a 27 yard field goal with 7 seconds left in the game, as we suffer a devastating loss. The loss drops us into a tie with Carolina for the division lead. Maine (8-5) 21 at Detroit (6-7) 24 Another loss has us watching our playoff situation slide away minute by minute. The Lions shut down our rushing attack, forcing Erickson to put up the ball 46 times, completing 33 for 287 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. We drop to second place in the division, and the way we’re playing , we’ll be lucky to qualify as a wild card team. Maine (8-6) 34 at Cleveland (3-9) 10 We win, as we should, playing against a team that has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Leon Sheldon rushes for 147 yards on 27 carries. Starting quarterback Daryl Erickson breaks his nose in the first quarter, and backup Russell Laxdall hits 16 out of 32 for 146 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our defense holds the Browns to 189 total yards. The bad news: Linebacker Romeo is out, linebacker Tarpley and guard Rebensdorf are questionable for next week’s game. Tarpley and Rebensdorf will start. The game is at Carolina, and it is for the division championship. Maine (9-6) 35 at Carolina (10-5) 18 In the biggest game of the season, we finally play like the Moose of old, hitting on all cylinders. Leon Sheldon rushes for 100 yards, and Erickson has his best performance of the season, hitting 25 out of 35 for 214 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Engleberger has 10 receptions for 123 yards and 2 TD’s. With the win, we secure the division title and the #2 seed in the NFC.

We have a first round bye. Our opponent in the second round is the Green Bay Packers, who defeated the Toronto Argonauts 24-10 in the first round. Linebacker Leslie Romeo and CB Junior Riffle are questionable, but both will start. Green Bay 10 at Maine 24 It’s only appropriate that our defense wins the game for us, based on their performance during the season. We hold the Packers to 164 total yards. Leon Sheldon rushes for 72 yards and 1 TD, and catches 5 passes for 57 yards and 1 TD. Our opponent in the NFC Championship will be the Washington Redskins, who defeated the Dallas Cowboys 14-6. Maine 21 at Washington 24 (OT) We put up a valiant effort, but our season comes to an end when Redskins’ kicker Ray Griswold boots a 41 yard field goal in overtime. We tied the game 21-21 early in the 4th quarter on Nick Hancock’s 79 yard punt return and 2-point conversion pass from Erickson to Vincent Jones. Our All-Pro kicker Derrick Kaplan missed two field goals, which turned out to be the difference. He won’t make the All-Pro team this season. The Denver Broncos win the Superbowl 34-9 over the Redskins, for their 5th Super Bowl title in the last 8 years. 2021 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2020: 79/74/58/78 Overall: 71 From now on, I’m going to forego the Hall of Fame inductees except for former Moose players. Moose cornerback Harris Galloway announces his retirement after 15 seasons in the NFL (nine seasons with the Moose). He was a solid, reliable corner who was named to the All Pro team once in his career. We made a profit of $65.7 million, down 5% from the previous year. We will stick with Coach Klingler and head scout Jeffries this season. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, and since we had a winning season, we raise ticket prices 5% (except where this would exceed New England’s prices). Here is our offseason roster:
We designate Junior Riffle as our franchise player. With the loss of Galloway, it is crucial to keep Riffle on the roster. Even though we might pay less for him on the open market, his loyalty is “very low”, so we don’t chance it. Pittsburgh offers us their 2nd round draft choice and wide receiver Victor Marx (59/59) for tackle Kris Henderson. We accept the offer (after checking the “fairness test”), and save about $6 million in cap space. One of our starting wide receivers, Marc Kripper, is a UFA this season, and he is asking for ridiculous money to resign (about $2 million more per season than Marx, who has identical ratings). As for the loss of Henderson, he’s a fine tackle, but he would have counted an astronomical $11 million against the cap this season. Our 4th year backup tackle Winifred Wayne isn’t as good, but he’s good enough to start (and his salary is about $8 million less than Henderson’s). Philadelphia offers us their 5th round pick for backup fullback Colin Calaio. We check the “fairness test”, then accept the offer. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contract: C Marcus Benavides 3/15.6, LB Lenny Tarpley 4/27.3, T Brett Sullivan 4/33.46. We release WR Chris Barlow. |

Not counting our franchise player, Riffle, we have four players that are UFA’s: tight end Rex Burnett, fullback Benjamin Schreiner, wide receiver Marc Kripper and linebacker Paul Witt. Our critical resignees are Burnett and Schreiner. With the Pittsburgh trade for wide receiver Marx, Kripper is expendable. Witt is a good linebacker, but we expect our #1 pick from three years ago, Billy Griffith, to finally break out of his shell during training camp. His potentials remain in the mid 60’s to low 80’s. Schreiner appears to be the 3rd best available FB in free agency, and he is asking for a 2/7.38 deal, which is more than the two higher ranked FB’s are asking for. We decide to take a chance and not make an offer in the first week. Likewise for tight end Burnett, who is the 6th best tight end available. He is asking for a 3/15.53 contract, higher than the five guys that are ranked ahead of him. Much to our surprise, the Chiefs offer Schreiner a 2/7.44 deal in week 1. We are forced to jump in and offer a 2/7.50 deal in week 2, which he accepts in week 3. As for Burnett, he gets no offers during the 20 step process, and his asking price drops substantially to 3/10.3. The house rules permit us to sign any of our own FA’s before camp, so we’ll continue negotiations through the draft to see if his price drops. After the 20 step process, we resign our franchise player, Junior Riffle to a 3/23.28 deal. At this point, we have 33 players signed, and $23.1 million of available cap space. Our projected draft cap cost is $9.7 million for nine draftees. Figuring about $3 million in the cap for Burnett's resigning, this will leave approximately $10 million for 11 URFA’s plus some insurance money for injury signings during the season. DRAFT
Our most critical need is a starting cornerback. Hopefully, there will be a quality guy available late in the first round. At this point, it doesn’t look very hopeful, because there are only two guys that fit the bill of “immediate starter”, and they are likely to get drafted ahead of us. Our other primary needs are depth at tackle, defensive tackle and linebacker.
After the draft, we resign UFA tight end Rex Burnett to a 3/10.2 contract. For our “special” UFRA, we sign Florida State quarterback Jake Holsey to a 7/10.8 contract. We sign nine more URFA’s, and head to training camp. Here is our post camp roster:
Overall, a productive camp, with no busts and some modest gains. Our box office reports that we sold out our 67,500 season tickets. We go 2-2 during preseason, giving our backups plenty of playing time, and holding out our stars. We lose backup guard Josh Stryzinski for 2 to 3 months with elbow surgery. We are a bit weak at cornerback, and perhaps not as strong in some other areas. We should finish with a winning record, but I’m not sure that this is a championship caliber team. |

REGULAR SEASON
Seattle 20 at Maine 36 Daryl Erickson completes 22 out of 32 for 335 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. as we get off to a winning start. Leon Sheldon adds 83 yards and 1 TD on 10 carries, together with 5 receptions for 132 yards and 2 TD’s. We lose All-Pro fullback Benjamin Schreiner for a couple of weeks with a hyperextended elbow. Maine (1-0) 31 at New Orleans (1-0) 13 We get a big road win, with Leon Sheldon leading the way. He rushes for 88 yards and 1 TD on 14 carries, and catches a TD pass. Erickson has another fine day, hitting 23 out of 32 for 203 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Wide receiver Victor Marx and fullback Schreiner will miss next week’s game due to injuries. St. Louis (1-1) 3 at Maine (2-0) 28 Daryl Erickson lights up the Thunderdome to the tune of 24 completions in 32 attempts, for 217 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 INT. Vincent Jones hauls in 12 catches for 119 yards and 2 TD’s. The defense is lead by linebacker Maurice Romeo, who records two sacks, as the Rams are held to 183 yards of total offense. Fullback Schreiner is upgraded to “probable” and he will start next week. Carolina (0-3) 10 at Maine (3-0) 30 The Panthers shut down our rushing attack, so Erickson takes to the air, hitting 22 out of 33 for 258 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT’s. Engleberger hauls in 7 receptions for 108 yards. Saftely J. B. Tate leads the defense with 3 big interceptions. Unfortunately, two of our receivers (Marx and Norton) will miss next week’s game. Oakland (2-2) 10 at Maine (4-0) 39 Leon Sheldon rushes for 111 yards on 22 carries. This turns out to be a brutal contest, with our #1 and #2 quarterbacks leaving the game with injuries. Fortunately, Erickson is probable for next week’s game. Starting center Marcus Benavides will sit out next week due to a concussion. Maine (5-0) 24 at St. Louis (3-2) 21 Daryl Erickson hits Rex Burnett on a 23 yard TD pass with 49 seconds left in the game. Erickson had a horrid 19 for 40 performance with 3 interceptions, but he came through in the clutch. We have 10 players on the injury list, most notably wide receiver Victor Marx and defensive tackle J.R. Rayborn, who will miss up to three weeks. Maine (6-0) 31 at Toronto (2-3) 17 We limp into Toronto and come out with a hard fought win against the Argonauts. Daryl Erickson hits 17 out of 25 for 196 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 INT. Our running backs combine for 180 yards on 30 carries. Fortunately, we have a bye week coming up to heal some injured players. New Orleans 13 at Maine (7-0) 38 Daryl Erickson has another fine game, completing 25 out of 34 for 262 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Backup running back Spencer Richard rushes for 114 yards and 2 TD’s on 17 carries. Engleberger hauls in 7 catches for 114 yards and 1 TD. Maine (8-0) 21 at Atlanta (6-1-1) 35 The Falcons stick it to us, and hand us our first loss of the season. Falcons’ quarterback Cornelius Johnson hits 21 out of 30 passes for 181 yards and 2 TD’s, and the Falcons rush for 192 yards. We score two touchdowns in the 4th quarter, but this was a dominant performance by the Falcons. Our top 3 running backs are all questionable for next week’s game. Maine (8-1) 0 at Denver (3-6) 13 We lose our second consecutive game in a pathetic offensive display. Erickson throws 2 interceptions, and our rushing attack is held to 70 yards. We have a ½ game lead over the Falcons for the division lead. Maine (8-2) 3 at Carolina (3-7) 18 Consecutive loss #3 as we fall to the pathetic Panthers. Erickson is a horrid 13 out of 36, no TD’s and 2 INT’s. Our running game picks up a paltry 78 yards. Maine (8-3) 17 at San Francisco (6-5) 12 The defense wins this one, holding the Rams to 8 rushing yards. Atlanta (7-4-1) 24 at Maine (9-3) 38 Leon Sheldon breaks out of his slump, and rushes for 119 yards and 2 TD’s on 18 carries. Erickson hits 23 out of 35 for 217 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Andre England leads the defensive effort with 3 sacks. Guard Josh Stryzinski has been upgraded to probable from his early season elbow injury, and he will get the start in front of Boston, who is questionable. We welcome All-Pro J. R. Rayborn back to the starting lineup after being out for the past 8 weeks. Maine (10-3) 20 at Washington (6-7) 34 Barry O’Donnell ties a league record with a 99 yard TD run, as the Redskins whip us. We don’t do much offensively or defensively in this one. Our #1 and #2 receivers are both questionable for next week’s game. Green Bay (7-7) 14 at Maine (10-4) 35 Daryl Erickson snaps out of his slump, hitting 22 out of 31 passes for 249 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Leon Sheldon adds 93 yards and 1 rushing touchdown, together with a receiving TD. Our defense holds the Packers to 213 total yards. San Francisco (7-8) 18 at Maine (11-4) 41 We crush the Niners and lock up the #1 seed in the NFC. Leon Sheldon rushed for 172 yards and 2 TD’s on 20 carries, and Erickson is an efficient 23 out of 34 for 175 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. For the game, we outgain the Niners 415 to 214.

We get a first round bye, and host the Chicago Bears in round two. The Bears defeated the Falcons 31-28 to advance. Chicago 6 at Maine 37 A deafening Thunderdome crowd watches us dismantle the Bears and advance to the NFC Championship Game. Daryl Erickson hits 19 out of 25 passes for 228 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Engleberger has 6 receptions for 106 yards and 2 TD’s. Our running backs combine for 178 yards on 38 carries. Our defense smothers the Bears, holding them to 116 total yards. No key injuries, and next week we host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the NFC Championship. Their quarterback, Mike Hernandez, is outstanding. He was the second leading passer in the NFL this season. Tampa Bay 17 at Maine 34 Leon Sheldon rushes for 2 TD’s and catches a pass for another TD as we roll to victory and advance to the Super Bowl. The game is actually much closer than the score indicates. We score two touchdowns in the 4th quarter to pull away. Our opponent will be none other than geographic rival New England. The Patriots have the best quarterback in the NFL, Benjamin Lane. He is a 4 time All-Pro, and last season he pulled the quadfecta, winning the Superbowl MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, NFL MVP, and 1st team All-Pro. Maine 21 at New England 27 We put up a good fight, but the Patriots have a bit too much for us. The total yardage is dead even, but our three turnovers turn out to be the margin of victory. 2022 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2021: 95/73/64/80 Overall: 78 We have no retirees this season. Our profits last season were $96.9 million, an impressive 47% increase from the previous season. We continue to be one of the most successful franchises both financially and on the field. We are satisfied with Coach Klingler and Head Scout Jeffries, so we are happy to have them back again this season. Our fan loyalty remains at 100. Since we made it to the Super Bowl, we are entitled to raise ticket prices up to 10% per the house rules, except where this would exceed New England’s prices. Unfortunately, due to New England’s prices, we are only able to raise them slightly in a couple of areas. We have six UFA’s this season, but we decide not to use the franchise tag. Here is our offseason roster before making any cuts or renegotiations:
We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contracts: QB Daryl Erickson 4/47.04, safety J.B. Tate 3/14.77, DE Andre England 3/23.10, G George Boston 3/15.83. We release QB Jake Holsey and CB Vince Lang. With those moves, we increase our cap space to about $47.5 million. Of our six UFA’s, we feel that it is critical to resign G Claude Rebensdorf. We need to resign one of our two UFA safeties, Rich Nelson or Tim Jochen, because our 2nd year man Martin Sinclair looks to be about a year away from becoming a viable starter. Defensive end Josh Wallen and defensive tackle Frankie Strickland are both 13 year veterans, and their ability is waning in the twilight of their careers. Wallen was our #1 draft choice in 2010, and Strickland was our #5 choice that year. He has been an overachiever throughout his career, garnering All-Pro honors on three occasions. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to pay either of them the money that they are requesting (each about $9 million per season). We feel that our #2 draft pick from last season, Robert Lange, is ready to take over for Strickland at defensive tackle. Likewise for our 3rd year defensive end, Billy Hoffman, who appears to be ready to take over for Wallen. Our other UFA is reserve tight end Lamont Davidson, a good player, but not worth paying big money to resign. We will be making an aggressive move in the first stage of free agency to sign Kansas City UFA K.C. Caldwell, a five year veteran All-Pro shutdown cornerback. This could cost us upwards of $10 million against the cap this year, but we feel like it will give us the strongest defensive backfield in the NFL. In addition to our UFA’s, we feel that it’s important to sign RFA wide receiver Wayne Engleberger, punter Charlie Terry, and linebacker Billy Griffith. It’s hard to do an exact calculation, but we estimate that our total cost to resign the targeted UFA’s and RFA’s will be about $32 million against the cap. Our projected draft cap cost is about $7.5 million, leaving about $15 million for URFA’s and injury replacement insurance. [This message has been edited by Vegas Vic (edited 04-02-2001).] |

DRAFT
Our biggest needs are backup guard, backup defensive end, and backup tight end. With the anticipated resigning of RFA’s Engleberger, Griffith, and Terry, we are set at the starting positions.
After the draft, we resign our three targeted restricted free agents. Wide receiver Wayne Engleberger signs a 4/33.37 contract, linebacker Billy Griffith signs a 4/25.71 deal, and punter Charlie Terry signs a 3/4.67 deal. For our special URFA, we sign WR Burt Bennett (19/52) to a 7/9.72 deal. We sign nine more URFA’s, and head to training camp. Here is our post camp roster:
Our #1 draft pick, Corbett, takes a bit of a ratings hit, but he still has decent potential. Otherwise, we have a productive camp heading into the preseason. Our box office reports another sellout in season tickets. We are in a rebuilding phase for the next couple of seasons, so expectations are guardedly optimistic but not unrealistic. We should be a contender for the division title once again, but beyond that remains to be seen. We go 1-3 during preseason, resting most of our starters. However, fullback Benjamin Schreiner will miss most of the season after undergoing elbow surgery. |

REGULAR SEASON
Maine 44 at St. Louis 14 We open the season on the road in fine form. Leon Sheldon rushes for 123 yards on 23 carries, and Daryl Erickson connects on 22 out of 37 passes for 276 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Our defense completely manhandles the Rams, holding them to 13 rushing yards. J.B. Tate picks off two passes. The only bad news coming out of the game is that wide receiver Wayne Engleberger is questionable with a broken nose. Chicago (0-1) 24 at Maine (1-0) 21 Daryl Erickson has a horrible performance in our home opener, throwing three interceptions, two of which are returned for touchdowns by the Bears. Leon Sheldon rushes for 155 yards on 19 carries in a losing effort. We outgain the Bears 394 to 251, but the turnovers are too much to overcome. Engleberger sits out the game with a broken nose, and is questionable once again for next week’s game. New Orleans (1-1) 21 at Maine (1-1) 37 Last week’s horrid performance temporarily carries over into this game, as Leroy Bergen runs the opening kickoff back 100 yards for a Saints’ touchdown. We dominate the game after that rude awakening, as Erickson atones for his dismal performance last week by completing 21 out of 38 for 256 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Rich Nelson leads the defensive effort with an interception return for a TD. The Saints score at the end of the game to make the score appear closer. Engleberger misses his second consecutive game with a broken nose. We have a bye week, so he’ll be ready to go for our next game. San Francisco (1-2) 20 at Maine (2-1) 45 Leon Sheldon rushes for 147 yards and 2 TD’s on 16 carries, as we roll to victory. Daryl Erickson hits 20 out of 29 for 251 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s, and Engleberger returns to action, hauling in 5 catches for 100 yards and 1 TD. Damon Forbes passes for 308 yards, but our defense picks him off three times, and much of his yardage comes after the game is well in hand. Maine (3-1) 10 at Carolina (4-1) 24 The Panthers are the surprise team of the season, and they stick it to us to extend their division lead. Two of our best players, tackle Brett Sullivan and defensive end Andre England go down with season ending injuries. Panther’s quarterback Percy McKnight torches our secondary, hitting 28 out of 36 for 311 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. We move backup center Lewis Sheldon to right tackle for next week’s game. St. Louis 10 (1-5) at Maine (3-2) 22 We pay a heavy price for the win. Quarterback Daryl Erickson, defensive end Donald Corbett and wide receiver Wayne Engleberger will all miss next week’s game due to injuries. Maine (4-2) 27 at Atlanta (4-2) 16 Our banged up troops get a big road win against the Falcons. Backup quarterback Russell Laxdall does a fine job in relief, hitting 25 out of 37 for 263 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Our running backs combine for 143 yards rushing. New England (5-2) 11 at Maine (5-2) 24 In the biggest home game in franchise history, we win the “revenge bowl”, although it still can’t totally take away the sting from last year’s Superbowl loss. We show the Patriots what smashmouth football is all about, rushing for 220 yards, including 116 yards from Leon Sheldon. Future Hall of Fame quarterback Benjamin Lane is held to a below average 266 passing yards, and Moose safety J.B. Tate comes up with a big interception to seal the victory. Our backup quarterback, Laxdall, has a mediocre performance, with 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Engleberger returns to action and hauls in 6 catches for 73 yards and a TD. Erickson will not be ready to go next week, so we’ll have to go with Laxdall again. Maine (6-2) 26 at San Francisco (4-4) 6 Leon Sheldon rushes for 102 yards on 18 carries, and Laxdall is a mistake free 15 out of 25 for 153 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Engleberger hauls in 5 catches for 80 yards and 1 TD. Our defense plays an outstanding game against Niner quarterback Damon Forbes, holding him to 15 completions in 39 attempts for 163 yards, 0 TD’s and 3 INT’s. I don’t know how long we can keep this up, as we lose two more starting offensive linemen for next week’s game, center Benavides and guard Rebensdorf. Erickson is still out. Maine (7-2) 44 at New Orleans (4-5) 17 Our patchwork offensive line steps up big in this road victory. Leon Sheldon leads the way with 92 yards and 1 TD on 18 carries, and his backup, Scott Fuamatu-Ma’afal, rushes for 81 yards on 10 carries. Cornerback Junior Riffle returns an interception 80 yards for a TD to lead the defensive effort. Laxdall has a so-so performance, hitting 19 out of 26 for 192 yards, 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Erickson is upgraded to “probable” and will start next week. Maine (8-2) 10 at Buffalo (3-7) 24 Erickson has an absolutely pathetic performance in his return to action. He goes 18 out of 30 for 126 yards, 0 TD’s and 3 INT’s. The Bills stuff our rushing game, and combined with Erickson’s interceptions they come away with the victory. Maine (8-3) 7 at Tampa Bay (5-6) 13 Erickson has another terrible game, hitting only 12 out of 27 for 157 yards, 0 TD’s and 1 INT. Our injury situation continues to mount; we are now down to one defensive end. We release safety Lawrence McCullar, and sign 2nd year FA defensive end Alfred Schultz (16/16) to a 1/930K contract. Schultz will have to start next week’s game. The only good thing to come out of this injury situation is that we don’t have anyone complaining about playing time. Atlanta (7-5) 23 at Maine (8-4) 29 The Falcons outgain us 371 to 312, but our defense comes up with three big interceptions to preserve the win. The roster that we are putting on the field is average at best, but they manage to keep us in contention for the division title. Carolina (9-4) 7 at Maine (9-4) 23 Daryl Erickson, who is having a subpar season, steps up like the true pro that he is, leading the Moose to victory in this battle for division supremacy. Erickson completes 24 out of 35 for 248 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our best offensive lineman, tackle Brett Sullivan, is upgraded to “probable”, and will make his first start in 2 months. Dallas (9-5) 17 at Maine (10-4) 26 Erickson comes through again, hitting 29 out of 43 for 396 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Unfortunately, we lose wide receiver Engleberger again with another injury. Maine (11-4) 14 at Raleigh (10-5) 17 Lester Whitlow boots a 37 yard field goal with 23 seconds left in the game, as we see our first round bye go out the window. The loss relegates us to the #3 seed in the NFC, and we get to host the Atlanta Falcons next week.

PLAYOFFS
Atlanta 0 at Maine 38 We put together a great all around effort, with Daryl Erickson completing 20 out of 27 passes for 240 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Leon Sheldon adds 95 yards rushing and 3 TD’s. Engleberger plays hurt and hauls in 8 catches for 144 yards and 1 TD. Our defense dominates, holding the Falcons to just 135 total yards. Our next opponent is the Toronto Argonauts. They are lead by quarterback Donovan Finch, who lead the NFL in TD passes with 33. Our defensive end Andre England is upgraded to “probable”, and he will start next week, after missing over 2 months with broken ribs. Maine 27 at Toronto 24 Leon Sheldon rushes for 86 yards and Erickson throws 3 touchdown passes, as we defeat the Argonauts in a hard fought game. Derrick Kaplan kicks the game winning 21 yard field goal with 2:09 left in the game. We return to Canada next week to face the Montreal Alouettes in the NFC Championship game. Montreal defeated the Dallas Cowboys 20-10 to advance. The Alouettes are quarterbacked by former Moose, Shane Dobbs. Dobbs played for us from 2012 to 2015, and was traded to the Eagles before the 2016 season. Maine 12 at Montreal 9 In a battle of field goals, our Derrick Kaplan out duels Cory Neal 4 to 3. Neither team does much offensively; however, Sheldon has a bit of success on the ground, rushing for 84 yards on 19 carries. Our defense makes life unpleasant for former Moose quarterback Shane Dobbs, holding him to 18 completions in 39 attempts, for 182 yards and 1 INT. Unfortunately, we lose our #1, #2, and #3 wide receivers with injuries, so we will be forced to start our 4th and 5th string wide receivers in the Super Bowl. For a little background, during the regular season, WR #4 Vincent Jones caught 8 passes for 108 yards, and WR #5 Burt Bennett caught 1 pass for 7 yards. Our opponent in the Superbowl will be the Pittsburgh Steelers, who defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 29-20. Maine 17 at Pittsburgh 20 (OT) The Steelers’ Glenn Willis kicks a 23 yard field goal with 23 seconds left in regulation, sending the game into overtime. In OT, he boots a 55 yard field goal to give the Steelers the championship. With our top three wide receivers out, Erickson does an admirable job, hitting 20 out of 35 for 211 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. However, the lack of a credible threat at wide receiver proves to be too much for the Moose to overcome. AWARDS TE Rex Burnett, 1st team All-Pro DT J.R. 2023 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2022: 95/73/60/77 Overall: 75 We have no retirees this season. Our profit was $78.1 million last year, down 26% from the previous season. This marks the 13th consecutive season that we’ve turned a profit. We decide to make a change at lead scout, so we sign 63 year old Leon Harmon to a 3/750K contract. Harmon’s ratings are F/E/V/G/E/V/E/G/G. We are happy with Coach Klingler’s performance, and he returns for another season. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, and since we made it to the Super Bowl again, we raise ticket prices by 10% (except where this would exceed New England’s prices). We designate All-Pro defensive tackle J.R. Rayborn as our franchise player. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players who are in the final year of their current contract: C Marcus Benavides 4/25.38, WR Victor Marx 3/19.88. We release WR Burt Bennett. Here is our roster before the beginning of free agency:

Not including our franchise player, Rayborn, we have five UFA’s this season: QB Russell Laxdall, RB Leon Sheldon, FB Benjamin Schreiner, T Winfred Wayne, and K Derrick Kaplan. Laxdall is a backup QB, and not worth the money. Sheldon is asking for about $12.5 million this season, and his ratings are nowhere near what they were in his prime. Sadly, we will have to let him go to free agency. This will upset many fans, but we cannot remain strong in critical areas if we spend that much money to resign a now “average” player. Instead, we will look to resign our 3rd year RFA running back Scott Fuamatu-Ma’afal before training camp for substantially less. We will also have to let fullback Schreiner go to free agency. He has been with us for 14 seasons, 8 of them All-Pro. Third year veteran Gerald Woodie has beaten him out for the starting job, and we cannot afford to resign Schreiner. Tackle Winfred Wayne is seeking $9.5 million this season, and we can’t afford it. Glen Cooley will have to take over, although we are concerned about Cooley’s endurance. Kicker Derrick Kaplan is asking for about $3 million this season, and we need to resign him, as he is one of the best in the league. So, that leaves us with Rayborn and Kaplan as the only UFA’s who will be resigned this season.
FREE AGENCY T Winfred Wayne signs in Week 1 with Dallas for 2/19.56. FB Benjamin Schreiner signs in Week 1 with Denver for 3/10.73. In Week 8, our backup QB Russell Laxdall signs a 3/52.13 contract with Washington. In Week 9, we resign K Derrick Kaplan to a 3/10.19 contract. In week 11, Jacksonville signs Leon Sheldon to a 3/29.25 contract. After the 20 step process, we resign Rayborn to a 4/25.96 contract. We are offered two trades, but neither passes the “fairness test”. |

REGULAR SEASON
Maine 10 at Pittsburgh 3 We win the “revenge bowl”, as Erickson is knocked out of the game with a bruised shoulder, and Hartman comes in and hits 10 out of 16 for 96 yards and the game’s only TD, a 2 yard pass to O.J. Filar. Our defense plays a fine game, holding the Steelers to just 200 total yards. Erickson will miss next week’s game. Maine (1-0) 21 at New Orleans (0-1) 31 Backup Hartman throws 3 costly interceptions, and we can never get our running game going in this one. Erickson is upgraded to “probable”, and he will start next week’s game. Maine (1-1) 17 at Atlanta (0-2) 16 Even though we win this one, we appear to be in big trouble with our running game this season. For the game, we rush 25 times for –3 yards. This is totally unacceptable. All-Pro cornerback K.C. Caldwell wins the game with an interception return for a touchdown. Cleveland (2-1) 3 at Maine (2-1) 38 We finally get an all around team performance in our home opener. Caldwell runs another interception back for a touchdown to lead the defensive effort, as we hold the Browns to 128 total yards. Our running backs combine for 166 yards on 31 carries, and Erickson hits 21 out of 39 for 279 yards, 3 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Linebacker Billy Griffith will be out for several weeks with a broken foot. St. Louis (1-3) 10 at Maine (3-1) 17 Daryl Erickson gets in the groove, hitting 24 out of 37 for 253 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our running game is still a big concern. Maine (4-1) 10 at San Francisco (2-2) 41 Once again, our running game never gets going, and Erickson throws 3 interceptions, as the Niners win this one easily. We could be in for a long season. We lose guard George Boston with a broken foot and linebacker Lenny Tarpley with a concussion. Maine (4-2) 14 at St. Louis (2-5) 24 Two more starters go down, tackle Brett Sullivan and fullback Gerald Woody. Erickson throws 3 more interceptions, and his quarterback rating now sits at a dismal 73.1. Maine (4-3) 10 at Carolina (7-1) 6 We come up with a huge road win over the 1st place Panthers. Unfortunately, we lose wide receiver Wayne Engleberger for the season with a broken arm. Maine (5-3) 27 at Detroit (2-6) 35 We play our seventh road game in nine weeks, and fall to 5-4 on the season. No season ending injuries to report in this one, however. New Orleans (5-4) 20 at Maine (5-4) 34 We have our first 100 yard rushing performance of the season, as rookie Littleton rushes for 119 yards on 21 attempts. Erickson throws three touchdown passes and no interceptions. Atlanta (0-10) 17 at Maine (6-4) 27 We didn’t want to be the first team to lose to the horrid Falcons. Erickson throws 2 TD’s and Littleton rushes for one more. Maine (7-4) 6 at Montreal (3-8) 10 The Alouettes deal us a huge blow, and put our playoff hopes in jeopardy. Carolina (9-3) 10 at Maine (7-5) 9 Percy McKnight hits Donald Tierny on a 9 yard touchdown pass with 1:32 left in the game, as the Panthers drive another nail in our coffin. Toronto (4-9) 10 at Maine (7-6) 17 We jump out to a 17-0 lead, and scrape out a win to keep our faint playoff hopes alive. Erickson hits 24 out of 30 for 200 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Baltimore (8-6) 19 at Maine (8-6) 20 Derrick Kaplan boots a game winning 43 yard field goal with 4 seconds left in the game to keep our flickering playoff hopes alive for another week. San Francisco (9-6) 27 at Maine (9-6) 17 The Niners win a playoff spot and send us packing for the season. For the first time in nine years, we fail to make the playoffs .

2024 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2023: 51/72/57/89 Overall: 69 We have no retirees this season Our profit was $64.1 million last season, down 18% from the previous year. We decide to go with a change at lead scout, and we sign 52 year old Mel Corley to a 3/300K contract. Corley’s ratings are F/G/G/G/F/F/E/E/E. Coach Klingler stays for another season. Our fan loyalty remains at 100. We had a winning, albeit disappointing season. We raise ticket prices by 5% across the board. In an effort to place us far above any other franchise in the NFL, we submit a stadium proposal for a new 99,900 seat outdoor grass facility. We will await the outcome of the referendum when the public votes on the issue after the amateur draft. Here is our offseason roster:
We release defensive end Andre England and free up about $7 million in cap space. Hopefully, third year veteran Donald Corbett can step up and fill in. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contract: CB K.C. Caldwell 4/38.71, S. J.B. Tate 3/17.19, G George Boston 3/15.96, T Brett Sullivan 3/20.35, P Charlie Terry 2/2.88. We take a look at our free agency situation before the 20 step process. We have five UFA’s: TE Rex Burnett, CB Junior Riffle, G Claude Rebensdorf, S Rich Nelson, and DE Billy Hoffman. We will make an effort to resign Rebensdorf and Hoffman. As for the others, O.J. Filar can take over for Burnett, fourth year CB Leo Fitzgerald is ready to start ahead of Riffle, and fourth year RFA safety Martin Sinclair has moved ahead of Nelson. FREE AGENCY Rebensdorf is asking for about $6.5 this season, more than the two guys who are rated ahead of him. We decide not to make him an offer in Week 1. Ditto for DE Hoffman, who is asking for about $9.8 this season, more than all six guys ahead of him are asking for. Hoffman shocks us in week 2, when he signs a 2/21.38 contract with Raleigh. We are forced to regroup quickly, and we offer Cardinal UFA DE Alan Fredrickson (40/40) a 2/15.10 contract, which he accepts in week 4. In week 5, we offer Rebensdorf a 2/11.38 deal. Unfortunately, the offers start flying in, so we bump it up a bit to 2/11.94 and he resigns in week 9. Also, in week 9, safety Rich Nelson signs a 2/10.25 contract with New England. In week 10, tight end Rex Burnett signs with New England for 2/8.91. In week 20, we sign 10 year veteran TE Christian Harding (44/49) to a 1/2.62 contract, giving us some quality depth for our 2 tight end sets. Riffle got a couple of big offers, but the teams broke their cap and he remains unclaimed after the free agency period. [This message has been edited by Vegas Vic (edited 04-07-2001).] |

Our biggest needs are depth at guard, wide receiver, defensive end, linebacker, safety, and cornerback.
We are disappointed to learn that our stadium proposal was voted down, 51% to 49%. We will either come back with a revised proposal next season, or we may consider moving the franchise to another location. After the draft, we resign three of our RFA’s: safety Martin Sinclair 3/16.3, FB Gerald Woody 3/8.62, and DE Tyrell Stone 3/11.53. For our special URFA, we sign Lionel Riley (16/62) to a 7/9.78 contract. We sign eight more UFFA’s and head to camp. Here is our post camp roster:
We don’t quite sell out our season tickets, with the box office reporting 66,000 sold. We go 2-2 during preseason with no serious injuries. |

REGULAR SEASON
Detroit 3 at Maine 29 We win the game, but there’s not much celebrating afterwards. Starting quarterback Daryl Erickson will miss several weeks, perhaps longer, with a sprained back. The fate of the team now rests in the hands of 22 year old Rex Hegamin, our second round draft choice from last season. Hegamin has never thrown a pass in an NFL game, and is probably not ready to start, but unfortunately the circumstances dictate that he do so. On the positive side, Wayne Littleton has a fine day, rushing for 132 yards on 17 carries. Maine (1-0) 3 at Carolina (0-1) 34 The Panthers destroy us in every phase of the game. Hegamin gets a rude awakening to the NFL, as the kid completes 16 out of 26 for just 87 yards and 2 interceptions. Carolina rams the ball down our throats, rushing for 191 yards on 42 carries. Maine (1-1) 10 at Seattle (1-1) 20 The Seahawks stuff our running game, holding us to a pathetic 65 yards on 34 carries. Hegamin makes a modest improvement, hitting 15 out of 20 for 162 yards and 1 interception. Looks like we’re in for a long season. Atlanta (1-2) 22 at Maine (1-2) 45 Our offense finally breaks loose after being under wraps the past couple of weeks. We roll up 521 total yards in the blowout. Littleton leads the rushing attack with 153 yards and 3 touchdowns on 17 carries. Nixon adds 112 yards on 20 carries. Hegamin shows some improvement, hitting 18 out of 29 for 238 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. San Francisco (3-1) 6 at Maine (2-2) 30 Our defense plays an outstanding game, intercepting Niners’ quarterback Navarro 3 times, and holding him to a paltry 19 out of 46 for 170 yards. We rush for a combined 146 yards in the win. We lose DT Robert Lange with a broken arm, and safety J.B.Tate with a sprained neck. Maine (3-2) 24 at Atlanta (2-4) 6 Littleton rushes for 104 yards on 21 carries, and Nixon adds 78 on 14 carries. Our defense crushes the Falcons, holding them to 207 total yards. Defensive end Tyrell Stone will be out with a sprained neck for several weeks. Maine (4-2) 17 at San Francisco (3-3) 41 The Niners pound the ball, rushing for 222 yards on 32 carries, as they get revenge for the loss two weeks ago in Maine. Our offense is pretty well shut down, gaining only 199 total yards. Carolina (3-4) 10 at Maine (4-3) 17 We scrape out a much needed win, with Hegamin playing a decent game. The kid hits 18 out of 34 for 186 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Defensive tackle J.R. Rayborn comes up with three big sacks. Safety J.B. Tate is upgraded to “probable” and will start next week. Maine (5-3) 23 at New Orleans (3-5) 14 We get a big road victory, in spite of being outgained 409 to 216. We are managing to hang on, but Hegamin’s 62.7 QB rating is among the worst in the league, and we need to get Erickson back. It looks like it will be 3 to 5 more weeks before that happens. Linebacker Tarpley is out, and Romeo is questionable. Maine (6-3) 26 at Toronto (3-6) 20 Somehow, this team is finding ways to win. This week, even with Hegamin’s four interceptions, the Moose manage to scrape out the win. Credit the defense, which holds the Argonauts to just 167 total yards. Unfortunately, we lose our #1 draft pick, linebacker Leon Phenix, out for the season with a broken jaw. Tarpley is still out, so we are razor thin at available linebackers. New Orleans (4-6) 23 at Maine (7-3) 31 Hegamin has the finest game of his 10 game career, hitting 25 out of 30 for 246 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our running backs combine for 182 yards on 44 carries. Linebackers Romeo and Tarpley are questionable next week, but they will both have to start. Maine (8-3) 0 at St. Louis (5-6) 34 The “Jeckyll and Hyde” Moose get blown out in this one. Hegamin reverts back to his early season form, hitting 8 out of 22 passes for 94 yards and 2 interceptions. A cheer goes up over the entire state of Maine, as Daryl Erickson is upgraded to “probable”, and will start next week’s game. Maine (8-4) 27 at Los Angles (5-7) 24 (OT) Erickson makes up for lost time, hitting 31 out of 50 for 346 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Littleton adds 101 rushing yards on 16 carries. Erickson ties the game with 53 seconds remaining when he hits Rondell Woodford on a 21 yard TD pass. Kaplan boots a 29 yard field goal in OT to secure the win. Oakland (8-6) 7 at Maine (9-4) 57 We score a franchise record 57 points, and our defense holds the Raiders to 139 total yards. Erickson throws 3 TD passes, and our running backs combine for 149 yards rushing. St. Louis (8-6) 20 at Maine (10-4) 17 What a difference a week makes. John Sweeny boots a 31 yard field goal with five seconds left in the game, as the Rams pretty much put an end to our chances for a first round bye. Erickson throws 2 costly interceptions in the loss. Arizona (7-8) 7 at Maine (10-5) 34 We win the game, but our costly loss against the Rams two weeks ago results in the #3 seed in the NFC, and no first round bye. We lose another linebacker, Billy Griffith for the remainder of the playoffs.

PLAYOFFS
Montreal 17 at Maine 41 Former Moose quarterback Shane Dobbs gets a rude awakening on his return to the Thunderdome, passing for just 101 yards and one interception. The Moose combine for 172 rushing yards in the rout. K.C. Caldwell runs back an interception 57 yards for a touchdown, leading the defensive effort. Maine 31 at Minnesota 28 Derrick Kaplan boots a 53 yard field goal with 1:54 left in the game, to send the Moose on to the NFC Championship game. Erickson hits 22 out of 38 for 255 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. We have four injured linebackers, and we’ll have to shuffle some people out of position for the game against the Eagles. Wide receiver Engleberger is also questionable, but he’ll start. Maine 27 at Philadelphia 14 Erickson throws 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Super Bowl, here we come! After Erickson’s injury in Game one, and our mediocre start, who would have ever believed it? Maine 23 at Buffalo 17 In the most bizarre Superbowl ending of all time, Moose defensive ends Terrell Stone and Donald Corbett converged on Bills’ quarterback Morris, sacking him and forcing a fumble, which Moose defensive tackle Robert Lange scooped up and returned 22 yards for a touchdown with 33 seconds left in the game. Buffalo coach Jon Benton will be asked for many years to come why he did not choose to run out the clock and go into overtime. Here is the excerpt from the game log, just after Maine tied the game at 17-17:
Daryl Erickson had tied the game 17-17 on a 21 yard touchdown pass to Rondell Woodford with 1:05 left in the game. Erickson was named the game’s MVP, completing 23 out of 29 for 193 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. The win by the Moose gives them their 3rd Super Bowl title in 7 appearances, while the Bills remain winless in 6 attempts. Many Bills old-timers were overhead saying that this defeat was even more painful than the loss to the Giants 33 years ago, when Scott Norwood missed a field goal on the last play of the game. 2025 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2024: 100/77/58/72 Overall: 74 We have no retirees this season. Our profit was $85.9 million, a 34% increase from the previous season. We induct our first player into the Moose “ring of honor”, defensive tackle Frankie Strickland. Strickland was our 5th round draft choice in 2010 from the University of Pittsburgh. He played 12 seasons for us, racking up 76.5 sacks, and all league honors on three occasions. As an overachiever, Frankie’s work ethic was an inspiration to the rest of the organization, and he elevated the play of all of those who played around him. We are proud to have him as our first inductee. Coach Klingler signs a new 5/3.95 contract with us. The youthful 42 year old has established a fine .677 winning percentage (3rd in the league). In his five seasons at the helm of the Moose, Klingler has four division titles, three conference championships, and one Super Bowl title. We keep our head scout, Mel Corley, for another season. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, and we raise ticket prices 10% after winning the Super Bowl (still below New England’s prices). We put out a proposal for a $2 billion outdoor, natural grass stadium with a capacity of 99,900. This state of the art stadium will be the finest in the league, and will establish us as the premier franchise. We offer to pay $670 million for the construction, with the remaining $1.3 billion coming from the public sector. The public voted against the referendum last year, and if they do so again, we’ll definitely be looking to relocate in the future. We designate DT Robert Lange as our franchise player. Here is our roster before making any cuts/renegotiations:
We have one player that is demanding to be traded, backup center Lewis Sheldon. Under the house rules, this is the only circumstance under which we can initiate a trade. After shopping around, the best we can get is Green Bay’s 5th round choice for Sheldon. We make the trade, and save about $6 million in cap space. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contracts: K Derrick Kaplan 3/6.26, WR Wayne Engleberger 4/31.53, P Charlie Terry 3/5.37, LB Billy Griffith 3/17.01, LB Leslie Romeo 4/26.05. |
