Things haven't exactly been stellar for us in the last two years at Rutgers. Taking over a program in shambles, we expect to take our lumps. The most difficult part of the building process (I might say rebuilding, but we're talking about Rutgers) is being content with minor victories. Pulling in that stud recruit. Keeping a talented player academically eligible. Landing a coach you think can make a difference, or barely beating a team that just moved up from the Ivy League. These minor victories have been strewn about my first two years guiding Rutgers, but in year 3 I'm hoping for more. Knight Knews - Staff Shake-Up! Unexpectadly, we are making some staff changes. In a move that really pisses me off, Great Lakes scout Kim Logan bolted for UCLA after just one year with Rutgers. I guess he figures the sun and sand of Hollywood beats the stench of the Raritan River at low tide. Maybe I shouldn't blame him.... Anyway, putting a positive spin on the situation, we hired the next-best guy. Brock Van Meter. He's got a helluva football name, and he just so-happens to be the scout who was the runner-up in last years hiring process! Welcome aboard Brock! Code:

Coach Rufus Wallace of Michigan has been named coach of the year for his 2003 performance! I wonder if the 100,000+ seat stadium is helping him out. Heisman Watch Though none of these boys was game enough to take the trophy last year, these are the 3 finalists who still have eligibility this year: QB Charlie Overleese - Oklahoma Charlie was 300-of-4,416 yards and 38 touchdowns last year. If he can cut down on his 28 interceptions, he'll have a shot to take home the hardware. QB Winfred Hartman - Tennessee Winfred went 300-for-471 for 4,221 yards with 40 touchdowns and only 16 ints. A serious contender. QB Broderick Peterson - Texas A&M Broderick is the most borderline of the returning candidates, as last year he finished last in voting going 258-for-448 for 3,641 yards and 27 Tds/19 ints. Streaking Ohio State is 25-0 over the last 2 years, and is looking to repeat their 2003 National Championship performance. At the other end of the spectrum, Princeton is 0-23 since 'moving up' into the Big East and Division I-A. Even better is the fact that two of those losses came to us! Can both of these streaks continue? |

2004 Depth Chart
Quarterback 1.Darryl Perrin 2.Byron Pfaff 3.Henry Chellgren Red-shirting: Lewis Meadows Hopefully Perrin will take every snap. Meadows would be a better backup right now, but we're going to red-shirt him beacause he may have to start next season. Running Back 1.Newton 2.Perkins 3.Mendhelson 4.Bernard (FB) Red-Shirting: Dromehauser These guys are very interchangeable, i may move one into a more solid starting position based off the rushing results of the first few games. Tight End 1.Rodriguez 2.Lemons 3.(FB)Bernard 4.Hawkins (RS) 5.Kingt (RS) Red-shirting ------------ Preston Hawkins Bert Knight Rodirguez all the way Wide Receiver 1 Ricardo Schroeder 2 Irwin 3 Gray 4 Lang 5 George (converted safety) reshirt ------- Upshaw Buddy lang could possibly contribute as a freshman. I like our top 2 here, and Upshaw could really help us next season. Offensive Line Center 1.Dan Barton 2.Kent Willis Guards 1.Jim Lyle 2.Wayne Harter 3.Andrew Imlay Tackles 1.Roy Vance 2.(G)Andrew Imlay 2.Ian Mullen 3.Lenny Dirta We're not very good here, so the best available are playing. Imlay will start at tackle this year, and hopefully improve enough to become a solid guard next year Pass Rushing DE 1.Terry Jackson 2.Brad Lamarr DT 1.Bernard Strong 2.Preston Slocum Run Stuffing DE 1.Jeff Stone 2.Terry Jackson DT 1.Bernard Strong 2.Corwin Giron Inside Linebacker ILB Hopper ILB Jandolfsky Outside Linebacker OLB Blackburn ILB Zandolfsky ILB Kent McWilliams ILB Larry Wheeler Defensive Backs 1.Volz 2.(S) Eddie Bidwell 3.Minter 4.(S)Ordonez 5.Sawyer Safety 1.Hoover 2.Kent Sawyer 3.Ordonez 4.Bidwell Safety is the strength here, so we'll have them help out at CB.

Weeks 1-2
We had week one off, so we took the the recruting trails...we'll detail that in the recruting report below. Week 2 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-0) at Western Michigan Broncos (0-0) last meeting: Western Michigan upset us last year 27-20 (at Rutgers) the Coaches poll ranked us at 107 and them at 80 W.Michigan was favored by 3 at home We came out very big on the road, running back an 80 yard interception for a touchdown just a few minutes into the game. Our offense seemed much more comfortable on this opening day, and the experience of QB Darryl Perrin with his recievers showed. What really helped us out was the balance provided by our running game, as the committee of RB's provided over 200 yards on the ground to add to our 250+ in the air. A very nice opening win on the road, and some revenge for last year. Final Score: Rutgers 38, Western Michigan 24 Player of the week nominees: ILB James Zandofsky 11 tackles, 1 assist, 1 sack, 1 interception (80 yard TD return), 1 pass defensed RB Malcolm Newton 13 carries 89 yards 1 TD RB R.J. Perkins 11 carries 96 yards, 1 TD DE Terry Jackson had 1 sack and 5 hurries, terrorizing Western Michigan all day long injury report Starting ILB Ben Hopper broke his clavicle, and will be out 8 weeks TE C.J. Rodriguez has some shoulder tendonitis, but is expected to play throuhg it #3 WR Neil Gray hurt his knee, and will miss 4-8 weeks hopefully these injuries will be minimized by the fact that we have 2 weeks off before our next game Recruiting Dream Recruit #1 G Roosevelt Edmunds --Schenectady, NY Roosevelt is the ultimate brains and braun recruit. A 3.67 student with a 1330 SAT score, Roosevelt is also a top-notch pass-blocker, very important in our offense. He comes from a superb high school program and would have a chance to start right away. Some rules updates After 2 disappointing recruiting classes, I've lessened the strictness of my house rules. Now i will be able to contact one 'red-coded' player per week, and one 'black-coded' player every other week. Previously I only allowed myself to contact one of them every other week. |

Weeks 3,4,5
With our sparse early-season schedule, we had two weeks off before our game at Miami. The recruiting results for all three weeks are posted below. Week 5 Rutgers Scarlet Knights(1-0) at #11 Miami of Florida Hurricanes(3-0) Last meeting: Miami 52, Rutgers 0 (at Miami in 2003) The Coaches poll had us ranked #46 and Miami #11 Miami is favored by 18 at home Injuries of note: WR Neal Gray could not play because of injury. We managed less than 200 yards of offense, and our secondary was torched in another loss in south Florida. The only bright spot was our respectable defense (held Miami to 2.6 yards per attempt) which forced Miami into throwing so often. If we can just cover some guys, we have a chance to win some games. Despite losing, I'm pleased that we looked significantly better than last year. Final Score: Miami 45, Rutgers 3 Player of the Week nominees none. Recruiting Dream Recruit #2 TE Albert Moss -- Potsdam NY Could excel in this offense as the top tight end, too good to ignore. Dream Recruit #3 G Jason Strong A pass beast, who can also pancake the opposition while run-blocking. rejections Roosevelt Edmunds Tennessee Kenneth Olivo Navy |

Freshman Guard O.J. Thompson was caught committing a serious violation of team rules. Though the violation does not warrant NCAA investigation, Coach Thompson has decided to suspend O.J. for the entire season. Rumour has it the suspension was drug-related. This comes as a blow the the football program, which is desperately trying to trun around both it's record and image. While O.J. Thompson wasn't expected to contribute much this year, it is very likely he will be removed from the team at season's end now. Coach Thompson declined comment. |

Week 6
Brigham Young Cougars (2-2) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-1) Last Meeting: BYU 70, Rutgers 19 (at B.Y.U.) The Coaches poll ranked us #81, and BYU #52 B.Y.U. is favored by 4 at home The Rutgers crowd was pumped for the home opener! The stadium was bedlam when on the first play of the game, QB Daryl Perrin hit WR Ricardo Schroeder for an 80 yard touchdown! The crowd didn't stay quite so excited when B.Y.U. scored the next 31 points though. Even down 31-7 we fought back hard, climbing to within one score on two different occasions (31-28, and 41-37) before ultimately being outdone by B.Y.U.'s killer offense. Final Score: B.Y.U. 55, Rutgers 37 Player of the Week nominees: WR Ricardo Schroeder, 9 catches, 262 yards, 4 tds QB Daryl perrin 17-29, 4 tds, 3 ints, 384 yards Injury Report: WR Walt Irwin pulled his groin and will be out 3-4 weeks Recruiting No one has decided to visit us yet, and that is probably not a good sign. Week 7 - The Revolutionary War
Princeton Tigers (0-4) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-2) Last Meeting: A game no-one will ever forget. Senior Fullback/Halfback Lance Jennings plunged over the goal line as time expired (for his only touchdown of the season) to give us the 28-24 win to keep posession of the Revolutionary War Cannon. The Coaches Poll ranked us at #94 and them at #124 We were favored by 16 at home Not much has to be said to the players when rivalry week pops up. The practices are a little more intense, the coaches speak a little less, and the fans yell a little more. Leading the series 2-0, we wanted to make sure these flea-ridden tigers of Princeton would remain winless in Division I-A. Our team had a true swagger as we took the field (again at home, which is 3 years straight). RB Malcolm Newton got our crowd going real early, scoring 2 touchdowns off Princeton turnovers deep in their own zone. There was no denying who would win this game. QB Darryl Perrin played well enough, and our ground game ate up clock late in the game. When all was said and done, Princeton was 0-28 since joining the Big East, and we had taken 3 straight in the Revolutionary War! Final Score: Rutgers 48, Princeton 16 Player of the Week nominees: RB Malcolm Netown 14 carries 80 yards 3 touchdowns WR Ricardo Schroeder 3 catches, 150 yards ,1 TD WR Buddy Lang 4 catches 44 yards, 3 touchdowns QB Darryl Perrin 9 for 15 3 tds, 2 ints, 204 yards Recruiting Dream Recruit #4 QB Tommy Hillman He is the best QB in our recruiting area, and we are in dire, dire need of a top-flight QB. Next season could be a complete wash if we don't have to QB talent to run our system.

Our passing game did come alive late, but it wasn't enough to get back in the game. Final Score: Virginia Tech 48, Rutgers 17 Players of the Week nominees: none. Recruiting Code:

Week 9
Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-3) at West Virginia Mountaineers Last meeting: West Virginia 41, Rugters 20 (at Rutgers) We tinkered with our pass settings, and also decided to move DE Terry Jackson back to LDE where he was more successful last year. Our passing game really failed us, and we fell behing early. The only real highlight was DE Terry Jackson having a big game. He'll go down as an all-time Rutgers great for sure. Final Score: West Virginia 37, Rutgers 10 [b]Player of the Week nominees: DE Terry Jackson, 10 tackles, 3 assists, 1 sack Recruiting: We decided to stop pursuing 'dream recruits' being that they really won't take us seriously at this stage of the recruiting game. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-4) at Duke Blue Devils (1-6) Last Meeting: have not met before Coaches Poll: Duke ranked 116, Rutgers ranked 98 We were favored by 3 on the road 3 minutes into the game QB Darryl Perrin tossed a touchdown pass to 5th reciever Frankie Goorge, the Blue Devils would never catch up. Our ground game ate up the clock and kept the ball moving for the rest of the game. When all was said and done we had a convinving road victory and our 3rd win of the season. Final Score: Rutgers 26, Duke 0 Player of the Week nominees: RB Malcolm Newton 15 carries for 95 yards, 1 touchdown QB Daryl Perrin 16-for-30 207 yards, 1 td, 1 int Recruiting Code:

Boston College Golden Eagles (4-3) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-4) Last Meeting: B.C. 41, Rutgers 30 (at Rutgers) Coaches Poll: B.C. was 37, while we were at #85 We were (amazingly) a 2 point favorite. The game was tight for the first quarter, then the B.C. running game exploded, leveling every defender in it's path. When all was said and done B.C. ran for over 250 yards while holding us to under 200 yards total offense. This game was a definite step down from our gritty performance in last year's loss. Give up some quick scores, then watch as they run, run, run away for the rest of the game. Syracuse had nearly 300 yards rushing, and had 522 yards of total offense in the game. Coaches Poll: Rutgers ranked 96, Pitt 53 Pittsburgh is favored by 13 at home Leading late in the game 27-24, our defense collapsed and allowed 14 points in the final 9 minutes. Our rushing offense had negative 10 yards, (yes -10), and amazingly our passing game kept us in it. Ultimately Pitt's ability to rush for 232 yards won them the game. This was a bitter pill to swallow. Final Score: Pitt 38, Rutgers 27 Player of the Week nominees: none |

Connecticut Huskies (3-7) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-7) Last meeting: Rutgers 41, UConn 24 (at Conn.) Coaches Poll: U.Conn ranked 109, Rutgers 100 Rutgers was favored by 7 at home. For the second year in a row, we got to send our seniors out in a blaze of glory in front of the home crowd. The day belonged to Senior QB Daryl Perrin, who was honored before the game for ending his Rutgers career the all-time leader in every passing category. Daryl played an inspired game, putting the records a bit more out of reach, and helping us build some momentum towards next season. We hope Daryl can take his game to the next level, but if he can't he'll always be remembered here! Final Score: Rutgers 41, Connecticut 27 Player of the Week nominees: RB R.J. 2004 Review
Looking at our team stats, i feel we really made some great improvement this year. While our record was still 4-7, we played all the games we lost tougher than we did the season before, we may actually be closing the gap on the rest of the big east. Offense Despite being a one-back team, our rushing game was better this year. While it was only slight improvement, our average rush increased .7 yards to over 3 yards per carry, we hope to move it to near 4 yards-per-attempt next year. While our passing game took a step backward statistically, our yards-per-attempt increased over last year, meaning our offense was generally more potent. We increased our scoring average per game by over a field goal to 24.9 Defense We got really mixed results here. The run defense improved a decent amount, but it forced teams to throw against us more, and the secondary was torched all season long. I hope our maturing safeties will help us in this department next year. Team Overview Going into next year, I feel we have a decent chance at taking some more steps forward. Our Offensive coordinator is settling into the single back offense, and most of our team is young and hungry. The biggest loss (by far) is QB Daryl Perrin. Daryl leaves us with a vacancy at quarterback, and the battle for the starters job should be wide open next year. If we can't get the QB position settled, it might outweight every positive we have next year. |

Your agent is on the phone...
If we're looking for external confirmation that our program is on the rise, we've got it! Invited to the pro football scouting combine were the following Scarlet Knights:
After their workouts complete, each prospect is bummed to find out they rank very low in their respective positions, making it doubtful they'll be drafted. The draftniks are correct, and nary a single Scarlet Knight is drafted. Still, Rutgers has a breakthrough when after training camp and injury-riddled San Diego Chargers team is looking for a left tackle. Roy Vance recieves that phone call and becomes the first of our Knights to sign a pro contract! While his season will consist of sitting on the inactive roster all season for an 8-8 team, he's still content to know he was good enough to make it to the next level. Roy would have to settle for his 1 year's earning of $650,000 dollars, and the rest of our draft-eligible players would never sign a pro contract before oficially "retiring." It might be a baby step, but landing a player on a pro roster (even for just 1 season) has us more excitied about our football program here at Rutgers than ever before.
