OT - Kim Källström - Football (the European one) & CM

One of my favorite CM players Kim Källström (National Swede midfield currently playing for Djurgarden IF) is very close to signing with Rennes. Paris (PSG) & Bordeaux are also interested. I would have loved to see him play for Bordeaux, but Rennes would be OK as the team as no midfield of real value at all...

Swedish newspapers are reporting it as a done deal for Rennes.

Edit: Funny that you mention other clubs as interested, here we have the impression of Rennes as the only interested part in a deal that was prompted by the player. He's anxious to get out and play in a continental league as soon as possible.

Kim was broken in one of the CMs, CM3 I think.

A video highlight with Kim assisting the first goal and scoring the second himself (that goal was nominated as Goal of the Year this season).
Kim Källström game highlights
He's #16 in the blue/black team.

He was a monster in my game as well, although I went with Johan Elmander instead. I hope to see the real life version of these guys one of these days.

Alf, what's your take on Kim's role in the team - do you think he's slated to start in the central midfield or just to provide depth?

I live in Rennes but follow more closely Bordeaux. However, fans here in here have no doubt he will start. They have no other outstanding player in the midfield.

More on monday as I will talk to co-workers (who follow Rennes closely)

Farnerud was recently signed by another French team, Racing Strasbourg. Could be good to know when the next data update in CM comes.

I'm not really sure he'll start, the team is doing well right now with 3 midfielders : Faty, Barbosa and Didot, and since Faty and Didot are the future of the team (and have been quite good lately) he'll have to challenge Barbosa (or maybe Monterruio) for a starting spot.

That won't be easy.

Plus at Rennes we know that foreigners tend to have problems adapting (Frei until lately, Lucas, Ivanov, Loeschbor, Fleurquin, Turdo etc...)

This thread has got me thinking about some of the other all-time great CM players. Two that come to mind for me are Robbie Keane from CM3 and Andri Sigporrson from (I think) CM 00/01. Mandatory purchases every time

Peter Prospar was apparently a mistake, the original release had his age and skills wrong. In CM he was a 20 yearold wonderkid goalmachine, in real-life he was a 30+ year old journeyman. First Patch came out, fixed his ratings and took away his CM superstardom.

Sigporsson was one of my favorites in CM00/01, played for my team for 16 seasons and scored over 500 goals. Look out for Orri Freyr Oskarsson in Cm03/04, the new Sigporsson (cheap, Icelandic goalgetter).

Back to real life for any of the French folk. Is Jean-Alain Boumsong as good as his reputation?

Johann Þorhallsson in CM03/04 is another super talent from Iceland... hard to find though since his last name is spelled with a Þ, not a P!

Just trying to work out why somebody would jump at Rangers (who are in financial difficulties) if some of the top teams in Europe (and Liverpool too) are after him.

It has to be the mascot name. I mean who would want to be a red pimp when you can be a ranger?

Pah upon Boumsong. He turned down the Gunners. Pah, I say! Pah! At least we have Cygan!

I'll be in the corner crying.

LOL

really love the "at least we've got Cygan".

And for Boumsong going to the Rangers, we've heard it too but the press thinks he'll go to the reds instead.

Heh. Forgive me, I'm just a bitter, bitter Gunners fan. We don't need no steenkin' Matty Upson. No, we don't.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Boumsong is just trying to use Rangers to force up demand and try to get somebody to jump in.

I'd be surprised if he went to Liverpool though, as they've already said they're going to dump Houllier if they don't make the Champions League this year. And as Houllier couldn't manage his way out of a paper bag, that target seems unlikely.

You don't like Houllier?

[Simple question, by the way, not disagreeing. I just don't know him or Liverpool's play very well.]

I don't like Houllier. He's spent a good deal of money bringing in players that haven't improved Liverpool at all, used his knowledge of the French league to spent good amounts of cash on players who've been unsuccessful, and he's turned Liverpool into a far more boring, long ball type of team than they used to be.

I also wasn't to impressed with his complaining about Neill's tackle that injured Carragher while he keeps quiet when his own players (normally Gerrard) throw in two footed tackles intending to injure players.

He's supposedly a nice guy, and he's got his health problems, but he still deserves to be fired. He went on about his 5-year plan to get Liverpool back challenging, now he's had 5 years and they're 9th in the league and worse than they were when Evans got sacked.

Yuck.

I did remember seeing some mentions of Houllier's lack of success with his transfer in an article about various managers and their success or, for some, lack thereof last season on soccernet. That's harsh.

Maybe we should have been a bit less cynical about Boumsong using Rangers to drive up demand, as he now appears to have signed a pre-contract agreement with Rangers and will be joining them in the summer.

Rumor has it that he'll play for Rangers for 2 seasons before being sold on, and that he's got a clause in his contract that will give him a percentage of the transfer fee when he is sold.

The article on soccernet a few days ago about Boumsong and the Rangers mentioned that Boumsong chose them because they wanted him right away and I guess he'll be playing right away. Apparently, the Reds and the Gunners didn't appeal to him because they wanted him to wait a bit.

Some of the reports I've read said that Liverpool dropped out because they've put a halt on Houllier making any new signings. Looks like they're getting ready for a new manager next season.

I read somewhere that the Rennes coach is happy with what he's seen from Kim in training so far, and wants to use him in a central AMC spot. Any reports on this in the local media?
