The Power of Mike Vick (and a great owner)

From the AJC:

Extra points

There are about 1,700 fans on a temporary waiting list for season tickets. Team officials plan to distribute about 60,000 seasons tickets. They're all accounted for now, but some account holders may opt out of their contracts by the June 6 deadline if they don't like their seat assignments in the Dome. . . .

60,000 with 1700 on the waiting list? There were many years that they didn't sell that many tickets total for games.

Yeah. Of course, the Atlanta-haters will bring up that ticket prices were reduced to reach this point, and say that is another example of how Atlanta is a bad sports town. They will completely disregard the fact that the tickets may have been overpriced before.

It's good to see. If 60,000 carry through, it will be very nice for the team. Having an owner who cares, and makes things happen, is always good for business. The way contracts get signed within hours of dinner at Arthur Blank's house is becoming legendary now.

What are the prices now and what were the prices?

Hey, I'm not going to call Atlanta a poor sports town. You have to admit, however, that how good of a sports town you are can be best looked at when things aren't going good.

Atlanta doesn't look good when that is the basis of the judgement IMO.

Denver, for my money, is among the best sports towns in the nation. The Rockies just put up back to back 73 win seasons and are still in the top 10 in attendance in major league baseball. The Nuggets haven't been to the playoffs in 10 years and still averaged nearly 15K a game which was higher than Orlando or the Rockets and right on par with the Nets. The attendance is poor, but not so poor the franchise is bleeding money either. Get a winner in town, and the Nugs will easily fill the remaining 4,000 seats in the stadium on a nightly basis. (capacity of The Can is a tad over 18000)

That's pretty impressive, it certainly helps to have Vick on your team...
