OT: Memorial Day Movies

Well, since it's memorial day, there is no shortage of war movies on the tube. I just finished watching Battleground, which is one of my favorites. Anyone else see any good movies today?

I went to the track today, but I always loved The Longest Day, and also A Bridge Too Far for older war movies.

The war scnes from a non-war movie, The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit were very profound.

We just got back from seeing Provence United, the 2002 Israeli movie of the year (or some such award). It was a movie about a lower level soccer team (in Israel) that got selected to play Maccabi Tel Aviv (one of, if not the top team in Israel). The plot involves a star player, a coach who had two games in the "big time", a player's ex-wife hooking up with one of his teammates, etc.

All in all a very good movie.

I may be mistaken, but I didn't see one station running Patton yesterday. Doesn't matter anyway, because after I watched Battleground, my wife appropriated the remote and proceeded to turn on Discovery...six hours of Trading Spaces.

The horror...

Managed to see TO HELL AND BACK - about and starring Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of WWII and all time. People have forgotten him.

I didn't watch it, but I did see it listed on one of the HBO/Cinemax/Starz/Showtime channels.

Audie Murphy is from north Texas, near Kingston. June 20th is Audie Murphy Day in Texas. We haven't forgotten him.

Quote:
In 1996 the Texas Legislature officially designated his birthday, June 20th, as Audie Murphy Day. On June 9, 1999 Governor George W. Bush, Texas made a similar proclation declaring June 20th to officially be Audie Murphy Day in the state of Texas.

Didn't he make several movies, including the one about his life?

Yup, that's some serious fruit salad. However, something about his personality tells me that he probably didn't mind showing off from time to time.

Apparently he gave all his medals away only to be given back to him . A sad life he lived after the war . Being taken advantage of by folks who wanted his name on products .

Sachmo,

When I say "we" I mean the general public. I could take a microphone and ask 1000 people who he was and I bet 10 probably know about him.

You and I have not forgotten him, but "we" have.

I was part of that event. It was great.

I see your point, Senator. Sadly, you are probably right about that survey. That sort of thing makes me cringe, sort of like I cringe when I watch people being given a history quiz on TV. I know most people don't really enjoy history, but COME ON!!

That's pretty cool that you were part of that ceremony. I guess your job does have it's perks...I mean besides the long hours!

Have you ever seen Leno do his man on the street interview? I don't watch him much, but I have caught a few nightmare interviews with people that make me shudder.

I have. He calls those segments "Jaywalking". I do realize that they only keep the people with really, really stupid answers, but I've seen some samples of quizes given to high school kids who can't name the major Allies in World War 2, nor whom the first president of the United States was.
