Indiana TCY Village Challenge: 2035

. . part 1 of the 2035 season is here . . . . Week 1 Review We've got week 1 off, but not all of the conference does: Week 1 Results -------------- Iowa 29, LOUISIANA-MONROE 23 Purdue 7, FRESNO STATE 24 Southern Mississippi 17, MICHIGAN STATE 41 New Mexico State 6, #7 NORTHWESTERN 31 Sitka 20, PENN STATE 13 Time Setting I tampered with the settings for every player, bumping academic time for those who I felt needed it. I take a proactive approach with coaching blocks. I don't want to use my coaching blocks for academic bail-outs, so if anything, I err on the side of too much study time. I then select 5-8 players to spend my coaching blocks on throughout the year. I feel a combination of playing time and coaching blocks help players rapidly improve. I'll leave myself 10-15 time blocks for academic bailouts in the 4th part of the semester. Recruiting We used our visits on players from Indiana and Ohio, and used our phone calls on the top 100. I can't say for sure how productive a week this was, as we offered no scholarships. --------------------- Week 2 Review Indiana Hoosiers (0-0) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-1) coaches poll: Indiana #36, Rutgers #90 the betting man says: Indiana by 5 attendance: 8,300 (41,500), hilarious! weather: 61 degrees and rainy TV coverage: none the game We received the opening kickoff, but looked completely shaky on offense. A couple penalties eventuall did us in, and we punted it away. Rutgers would go three and out and punt back to us. Contiuing to look nervous, QB Devin Spellman was intercepted on our next drive! Rutgers returned it to our 34 yard line, and did just enough to grab a field goal and a 3-0 lead. The game would remain 3-0 heading into the seocnd quarter. Our offense finally had something going early in the second, when again, a barrage of mistakes set us back. Pushed back by a 14 yard penalty and 8 yard sack, our drive stalled at the Rutgers 39 yard line. Going for it on 4th and 8, Devin Spellman was intercepted a second time. Rutgers punted the ball back to us, and the follies continued. After a first down and some actual pass completions, Devin Spellman was intercepted a 3rd time, and the inerception was take to our 24 yard line. Rutgers plowed through the defensive line, and on 6 straight runs gained the 24 yards and a touchdown. At 10-0, this game was turning out nothing like I had expected. A nice kickoff return placed us at our 35 yard line. B.J. Konrad burst up the middle for a 19 yard gain on first down... but he fumbled!  Rutgers recovered at their own 45, and again were in business. A 10 yard run on first down moved them past the 50. On the very net play they went deep for a 45 yard touchdown pass! Rutgers would take a 17-0 lead into the half, and needless to say, I was stunned!Laying into our players at halftime, I wondered aloud what the hell we were doing out there? We were playing like a pee-wee team, and making Rutgers look like a powerhouse. Even against such a pitiful squad, I thought 17 points might be too much to overcome. Kicking off to start the second half, it was in our Defense's hands to get this game headed in the right direction. Forcing Rutgers 3 and out, we felt a surge of hope as we took over at our own 38. RB B.J. Konrad ground out 14 yards on 3 plays, and then QB Devin Spellman hit WR J.B. Blades for a 48 yard touchdown! 17-7. Rutgers managed a few first downs on their next posession. While they didn't score, they were starting to eat away at the clock. With 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, we got the ball back at our 38 yard line. This drive was again sparked by a huge play. On our first play from scrimmage Devin Spellman found WR Russell Sailer for 51 yards! B.J. Konrad would then be stuffed on 3 straight runs though, and we kicked a field goal. 17-10. Rutgers ran out the rest of the 3rd quarter before punting again. Our next drive was the most balanced yet. Spellman hit Russel Sailer for 20 yards on a huge 3rd down and 20, keeping the drive alive. Some tough running by B.J. Konrad then earned us 3 first downs. Another Spellman completion to Jimmy Parr for 21 yards. B.J. Konrad took it in from 4 yards and the game was tied! 17-17. With 4 minutes to go, we regained posession at our own 18 yard line. B.J. Konrad plowed right up the middle for 41 yards! Devin Spellman immediately hit Jimmy Parr for 22 more. Spellman then found FB Charles Lyle for another 17. Spellman found Lyle again for the touchdown! 24-17! After a ridiculous first half, we escaped with the victory! Final Score: Indiana 24, Rutgers 17 Player of the Week Nominees B.J. Konrad - 33 carries, 193 yards, 1 touchdown Injury Report clean bill of health! Recruiting We contact a lot more players, giving special attention to Illinois this week. We offer a scholarship to QB Kurt Vallery, the #2 QB in the nation, and DT Vince Amaya. We'll probably look to hand out two more scholarship offers next week. QB Kurt Vallery - #2 QB, #2 player nationally. scouted 99- 6'1" 193 lbs from Suffolk, VA. Considered a bit of a finesse passer, the short passing game is his strengh. I don't see why he couldn't excel in a 'west coast style' pro set offense. Through 5 games: 62% completion, 1723 yards, 7 TD, 1 INT. 18 rushes, 140 yards, 3 touchdowns. DT Vince Amaya - #16 DT, #195 player nationally. scouted 93+ 6'4" 244 lbs from Chagrin Falls, Ohio. While his strenth is run defense, he looks to be a pretty solid all-around player. With his size, he could be a real force in the middle. Through 5 games: 57 tackles, 3.5 sacks. Week 2 Results -------------- Indiana 24, RUTGERS 17 Duke 27, OHIO STATE 30 Illinois 10, TEXAS CHRISTIAN 38 Purdue 31, UNLV 30 Iowa State 44, #21 IOWA 14 Missouri 20, #15 MICHIGAN STATE 41 #24 Army 0, #16 WISCONSIN 35 Central Michigan 28, #2 NORTHWESTERN 31 A shocking blowout by Iowa State over Iowa is great news. Also, Northwestern almost had more than they could handle in Central Michigan.

Week 3 Review
#18 North Carolina State (1-0) at #19 Indiana Hoosiers (1-0) coaches poll: Indiana #19, N.C. State #18 the betting man says: Indiana by 9 attendance: 35,500 (52,400) weather: 65 degrees and rainy TV coverage: TV4 the game We made "the switch" after last week's horrible first half showing by QB Devin Spellman. We received the opening kickoff, and took over at our own 19 yard line. B.J. Konrad picked up where he left off last week, and flew around left end for 10 yards and a quick first down. Junior QB Allen Salinas then prepared for his first pass attempt as starter. Salinas found B.J. Konrad on an out pattern, and we had 13 yards and a first down! Allen Salinas would put together an amazing opening drive, going 6-for-7 and tossing a 22 yard touchdown to TE Norman DeLay! The Indiana faithfull were going nuts, and the QB switch looked to be the right move! After our opening score, the game immediately turned defensive. A field position game that found N.C. State pinned deep a majority of the time ate up the rest of the first quarter. After being stopped a few times just past the 50 yard line in the 2nd quarter, we kept punting. N.C. State finally got past the 50 yard line late in the second quarter, as soon as they could see the endzone, they went for it. A 37 yard touchdown pass made the game 7-7 at the half. --- N.C. State took their opening posession of the second half down to our 13 yard line before fumbling. Luckily we recovered, but N.C. State cleary had the momentum of the game firmly on their side. Even thought they punted, N.C. State would be the next to score. On our next play from scrimmage, an Allen Salinas pass was returned 61 yards for a touchdown! N.C. State led 14-7. We immediately bounced back. Finally finding some consistent holes, RB B.J. Konrad did his best running of the game, and Allen Salinas again provided accurate passing. Salinas eventually hit WR Jimmy Parr for an 8 yard touchdown! It would remain 14-14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. After forcing N.C. State 3 and our, our offense again went back to work. On a drive that was almost entirely Allen Salinas, he found Russell Sailer for a 14 yard gain, Jimmy Parr for 23 on a 3rd and long play, and eventually B.J. Konrad for a 7 yard touchdown! With 8 minutes to go we were up 21-14. Just when it looked like we would turn out the lights, on 3rd and 10, NC State tossed a 60 yard touchdown pass! It was 21-21 with 6:41 remaining. Our defense would hold off one last frantic drive by NC State, and the game went to OVERTIME! We started on Offense. Here's the play by play: 1st and 10: Salinas to Lyle for 14. 1st and 10: Illegal formation penaltly. 1st and 15: Salinas to Lyle for 9. 2nd and 6: Salinas to Blades, 7 yad touchdown! We felt very confident our defense could end this thing immediately... NC State quickly made us think differently though. They opened with completions of 13 and 10 yards, and on 3 attempts, pund the ball in from the 2 yard line. To double-overtime we went. NC State was now on OFFENSE. 1st and 10: sacked by Shanahan for loss of 7! 2nd and 17: Sacked by Humpherey and Slay for loss of 6! 3rd and 23: completion for 8 yards. 4th and 15: we jumped offsides. 4th and 10: 42 yard field goal atemmpt is up and.... wide right, no good! Could we put the game away? 1st and 10: Salinas sacked for -5. 2nd and 15: Salinas to Sailer for 15 yards! 1st and 10: B.J. Konrad runs for 2. 2nd and 8: incomplete pass, under pressure 3rd and 8: Salinas to Jimmy Parr for 11. 1st and goal: incomplete. 2nd and goal: B.J. Konrad for 1. 3rd and goal: Salinas to Konrad for a 1 yard touchdown!!! game over!!!! Final Score: Indiana 34, N.C. State 28 (2OT) Stat Rundown
Player of the Week Nominees QB Allen Salinas, 27-for-43, 319 yards, 5 touchdowns, 2 interceptions. Injury Report RB B.J. Konrad strained quadricepts probable 2 weeks. Recruiting We spent a lot of time dealing with Wisconsin high schoolers this week, and offered 2 more scholarships to previously contacted players. I continue to feel a bit uneasy during recruiting, as we don't have any obvious strengths to offer most players. I haven't found too many superstars hell-bent on staying close to home. Also, recruiting of defensive backs is not coming along well, and this is an area of great focus. QB Kurt Vallery - #2 QB, #2 player nationally. scouted 99- 6'1" 193 lbs from Suffolk, VA. Considered a bit of a finesse passer, the short passing game is his strengh. I don't see why he couldn't excel in a 'west coast style' pro set offense. Favors Academics and Distance. FB Desmond McConell - #1 FB, #41 player nationally. scouted 89- 5'10" 214 lbs from North Olmsted, Oh. A devestating run-blocker, and a guy with great hands. Favors Distance and Academics. Through 6 games: 403 yards rushing (6.4 average), 3 touchdowns. 35 catches, 620 yards, 7 touchdowns receiving. OLB Robert Jeans - #20 OLB, #363 player nationally. scouted 75- 6'1" 200 lbs from Burlington, Ill. A big time run-stopper best suited to man-to-man defense. He gets lost in pass coverage when playing the zone. Favors Academics and Distance. Through 6 games: 67 tackles, 7 sacks, 2 interceptions. Week 3 Results -------------- #3 WISCONSIN 59, San Diego State 3 #7 NORTHWESTERN 50, Duke 35 #13 NOTRE DAME 49, Purdue 23 #19 INDIANA 34, #18 N.C. State 28 #22 BAYLOR 45, Minnesota 7 #24 California 31, ILLINOIS 0 Michigan 42, FAIRBANKS 35 OHIO STATE 28, Wyoming 3 MICHIGAN STATE 51, New Mexico 10 So far, so good for Northwestern and Wisconsin. Conference standings will be listed as soon as conference play begins. --------------------- My thoughts on the first 2 weeks The QB switch appears to be the right move, as Salinas completed a much larger percentage of passes, and only threw 1 interception of consequence (the other was an end-of-the-half hail mary attempt). I'll still be watching Salinas' performance closely. RB B.J. Konrad is probably going to have a hard time putting up great numbers against good run defenses. Subsequently, we're going to have to pass the ball more on first down. We've been getting ourselves into a lot of 2nd and long situations, and our penalty problems have compounded it. Our offensive line is having a hard time pass blocking, I'll work on identifying the culprits, and see if there are any real alternatives. Defensively, we're looking alright, but a tad prone to let big plays kill us.

Week 4 Review
Alabama-Birmingham Blazers (1-1) at #19 Indiana Hoosiers (2-0) coaches poll: Indiana #19, UAB #49 the betting man says: Indiana by 6 attendance: 35,500 (52,400) weather: 64 degrees and rainy TV coverage: TV5 Pre-exisiting Injuries the game One of the most defensive games I've been a part of, both teams made excellent use of their punters. UAB was the first offense to look capable, but missed a 45 yard field goal attempt early in the first quarter. Both teams would punt back and forth for the rest of the first quarter, with nary a scoring opportunity. Eventually, we would score. After a huge 39 yard run by B.J. Konrad started the drive, Allen Salinas found FB Charles Lyle three times for a total of 15 yards. B.J. Konrad would put it in the endzone himself, and we led 7-0 at the half. We missed another scoring opportunity when missing a 44 yard field goal attempt as the half expired. UAB got the ball to start the second half. On the third play, linebacker Mo Graham intercepted the ball and ran it back to the UAB 15 yard line. B.J. Konrad ran for 16 yards, but a holding penalty limited us to a field goal. 10-0. UAB rolled down the field with stron running to pull within 3 points, 10-7. late in the third quarter, Allen Salinas hit Russell Sailer for a 24 yard touchdown to go up 17-7. The fourth quarter would see UAB pull within 7, but on our next series, facing 3rd and 19 from our 9 yardline, the game was put out of reach. A 91 yard touchdown pass to Russell Sailer made every national highlight reel. More importantly, Indiana was off to a 3-0 start, and ready for it's conference schedule! Final Score: Indiana 24, Alabama-Birmingham 14 Stat Rundown

I've now tried to expand my search to everyone within 400 miles of the school. It means we've talked to players from a pretty wide variety of states at this point. Iowa Hawkeyes (2-1) at #19 Indiana Hoosiers (3-0) coaches poll: Indiana #19, Iowa #57 the betting man says: Indiana by 16 attendance: 37,600 (52,400) weather: 73 degrees and fair TV coverage: none Pre-exisiting Injuries the game The game started out as another defensive battle, and punts enveloped the first quarter. In the second, the stars came out to shine. QB Allen Salinas started moving the troops. Both teams traded field goals, and midway through the second it was just 3-3. Eventually we'd find the endzone on a 26 yard touchdown pass to WR Russel Sailer, 10-3! Our defnese continued to stuff Iowa before the could move the ball far. On a tipped pass late in the half, Safety Lamar Birgnac came up with an interception and returned it 60 yards for the touchdown! 17-3 at the half! We recieved the second half kickoff. QB Allen Salinas had been taking quite a number of hits today. One prime example was the 18 yard sack he took on the first play of the second half! Determined to make up the yardage, he found WR Jimmy Parr for a 52 yard gain! He'd hit TE Norman DeLay for a 15 yard gain, and again for a 17 yard touchdown. 24-3. For the rest of the afternoon, the same would continue. Salinas was really taking his share of sacks, but still passing like Joe Montana. Iowa wouldn't get into the endzone, and could only muster another field goal while we ran up the score. Final Score: Indiana 45, Iowa 6 Stat Rundown

the game the QB controversey takes another turn this week as Devin Spellman regains the job due to injury. After Ohio State drove to within scoring range, an interception at our own 3 yard line killed their drive. QB Devin Spellman trotted out onto the field and had his work cut out for him. Starting crisply, Spellman completed a few passes and utilized some tough running by B.J. Konrad to move us outto the 30 yard line. Spellman took quite a hit on a sack and seemed to be shaken up, but continued to play. Overall, the opening drive was a thing of beauty. Going 8 of 10, Spellman lead us downfield 97 yards. Converting on 2 enormous 3rd downs (3rd and 12, and 3rd and 13) he kept the chains moving. He took the ball off-tackle himself fot the 6 yard touchdown! 7-0! WR Russell Sailer appeared to be seriously injured on the next drive. To make matters worse Ohio State returned the punt 86 yards for a tying touchdown. 7-7. We missed a field goal in the second quarter, and Ohio State would add a 22 yard touchdown to take a 14-7 lead into the locker room. Rallying around the injury to Russell Sailer, we opened the second half with a perfect 80 yard touchdown drive. Superb passing from Devin Spellman moved us a majority of the way, but B.J. Konrad plunged in from 1 to tie the game at 14. The rest of the third quarter was mostly uneventful. Ohio State missed two fied goals that would have given them the lead. On our first drive of the fourth quarter, we looked as sharp as we did opening the 3rd. Devin Spellman led us on a 75 yard drive, culminating on a 2 yard screen pass to B.J. Konrad for the touchdown. 21-14! One posession later Jimmy Parr grabbed a hold of 29 yard Devin Spellman pass for a touchdown, and we took a convincing 28-14 lead. Our defense shut Ohio State down in the second half, and B.J. Konrad would tack on a game-icing touchdown. Final Score: Indiana 35, Ohio State 14 Stat Rundown Code:

The big week 8 first wave of recruits is coming ! I think that a win over Northwestern would secure us a playoff spot. Losing to Wisconsin couldn' be considered a bad performance (they are the running Champions !=)

Isn't the long wait the same thing we see every year? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we've seen recruiting classes where we haven't had a single committment until week 9! There's such a tough competition in the area (Notre Dame, Northwestern, even OSU and Penn State takes some every year) so anybody who's committing before week 8 must be idolizing us...
Usually it's a mad scramble in weeks 15-17 to get passable walk-ons to fill out the class of 16.

the game We came into the game knowing that our injuries at WR could drastically change our offense. Would we have enough to hold off the Spartans? WR Deion Erickson returned the opening kickoff 30 yards to our 45 yard line, giving us excellent field position. Devon Spellman was hot, and tossing 3 passes of 10 yards or more, moved us inside the Michigan State 20. Our running game stalled, but we settled for a field goal. 3-0. Michigan State roared downfield on long passes of their own, and a 24 yard touchdown run gave them the lead before we could even enjoy ours. A missed extra point made things 6-3. A B.J. Konrad fumble on the first play of our next posession didn't help matters. A 30 yard field goal put Michigan up 9-3. Devin Spellman went back to work. On the opening play of the next drive he hit WR Chad Hemmingway for 41 yards. Just when we thought we'd get stopped on 4th and 20 at the Spartan 40, a miracle "unnecessary roughness" penalty gave us a first down. Spellman didn't waste any time and hit Deion Erickson for a 25 yard touchdown! 10-9 Our defense finally settled down, and we force Michigan State to punt after 3 plays. Chad Hemmingwy grabbed the punt at our 42, dodged 2 tackles and zipped all the way for a 58 yard touchdown! Wow! Our backup recievers were really coming through! Michigan State went 3 and out again. A slow drive by us led to another score. A B.J. Konrad 25 yard run was the highlight, but ultimately the touchdown went to QB Devon Spellman. He ran a draw up the gut for a 7 yard touchdown. 24-9. Running their two minute-drill to try to pull a little closer, the Spartans attack back-fired. Safely within field goal range, Michigan State went for more. Their next pass found it's way into the hands of starting CB Ed Buchanan. Ed took it 78 yards to the house for a enormous score! 31-9 at the half! The third quarter so both teams settle down, and the defenses up their level of play. After an exchange of punts, we put together a 60 yard drive, attempting to put the nail in the coffin. QB Devin Spellman found FB Charles Lyle for a 5 yard touchdown, and we appeared to be out of reach at 38-9. When that score held until the end of the 3rd quarter, we were confident we had locked up the victory. The 4th quarter was strictly mop-up duty. Our defense and offense played quite conservatively, but it was more than enough to hold off the Spartans. Historically, I'd say that a 3rd place finish and a 9-2 record would give us an at-large spot in the playoffs 9 times out of 10. At 8-3, it's a whole lot more uncertain.
And, recruiting RB's is the number one headache we've had to deal with in this dynasty...

Beating Northwestern would basically secure us a playoff spot. 9-2 is nearly guaranteed a playoff spot, whereas at 8-3, it is very unlikely we have a shot.
As for the RB situtation, we seem to be on a bad luck series recently as I recall we had some great ones in the past ! PS : 3ric, did you backup all the threads over there at the old board ? if not, I am going to start doing it (if the site is still available) |

the game On our opening drive we asserted our dominance. 33 rushing yards from B.J. Konrad kept the chains moving, and an accuarte Devin Spellman eventually connected with Jimmy Parr for a 17 yard touchdown! 7-0. Our defense was shutting Illinois down (4 yards in the first quarter), but our offense was killing itself with penalties. We again started moving the ball late in the first quarter. On the first play of the 2nd quarter, Devin Spellman found B.J. Konrad on a screen pass for a 4 yard touchdown. While Spellman was looking sharp, credit had to go to Konrad, who was running right over the Illinois defensive line. 14-0. We'd add another 10 points before the half on a field goal and a 46 yard Spellman to Parr touchdown. It was 24-0 at the half. Illinois had 33 yards of offense and just 1 first down. 32 of their yards came on one passing play, we were killing them. The team was on auto-pilot in the second half. Our defense continued to dominate, and we cruised to an easy victory. A 22 yard touchdown pass to WR Earl Kaplan would be the icing touchdown. It was never really a contest. the game Knowing this was potentially our biggest game of the year, everyone was hyped up and ready to play! After an exchange of punts, we were the first team on the scoreboard. A 43 yard Norman Lofton field goal put us up 3-0. Northwestern's offense was killing us on third down. While routinely putting them in third and long scenarios, they continuously converted. Things were made even worse when on 4th and 4, their tailback broke free for a 40 yard touchdown run. 7-3 Northwestern. After going 3 and out on our next posession, things got worse. Our punt was returned 72 yards for a touchdown! Northwestern was up 14-3. The shock of the punt return seemed to damage our offense. We wouldn't produce anything close to a scoring drive for the remainder of the half. Northwestern tacked on a field goal to take a two touchdown lead, 17-3. On our first posession of the second half we began to move the ball again. Devin Spellman was hitting his targets, and we cruised past the 50 yard line. On 3rd and 3, a short pass fell into the wrong hands. Northwestern intercepted the ball and dashed 68 yards for the touchdown... we were now down 24-3! The rest of the 3rd quarter was a mass of punts, which I'm certain was just fine with Northwestern. With time becoming a factor, we could never really get back into the game. We would manage to score twice more, but never pull within more than 14 points. Final Score: Northwestern 31, Indiana 17 Code:

the game With Wisconsin still on our schedule, this is a must win for playoff consideration. On our opening drive, two nice passes from Devin Spellman moved us. A 20 yard toss to WR Jimmy Parr and a 19 yarder to Deion Erickson helped us snag the games opening score, a Norman Lofton field goal. 3-0. It was a sloppily played first quarter, highlighted by both teams throwing interceptions at their opponents 1 yard line. Early in the second quarter, Devin Spellman found Jimmy Parr for a 13 yard touchdown. 10-0. While it was 10-0 at the half, Spellman had thrown 3 interceptions, and we were letting a really bad team hang around. The second half was equally poorly played, and we let Minnesota pull to within 3 with 5 minutes remaining. A Deion Erickson reverse run for a 3 yard touchdown sealed the game. This was by no means the bounce-back game we had hoped for after last week's crushing loss to Northwestern. Final Score: Indiana 20, Minnesota 10 Code:

the game We received the opening kickoff and came out looking sharp. B.J. Konrad gained 29 yards on 4 consecutive runs before our offense was stopped on downs at the Wisconsin 35 yard line. Wisconsin immediately broke out their option offense and ran it to perfection. On their drive, at least 55 of the 65 yards came from the option, we simply couldn't stop it. After we went 3 and out Wisconcsin quickly moved the ball into our red zone again. Showing an incredible amount of balls, and lack of respect for us, Wisconsin went for it on 4th and 5 from our 11 yard line. Their running back broke through the line and didn't stop until in the end zone. 14-0. We'd at least keep it together for the rest of the half and go into the locker room down 17-0 at the half. Wisconsin came out gunning on their opening drive of the second half, and an 80 yard drive seemed to put the game out of reach at 24-0. Things would really only get worse, and when the day was done we would be humiliated. Wisconsin even showed their disdain for us by running up the score. With 6 seconds remaining at our 4 yard line, rather than kneel on the ball they ran a play and scored another touchdown. We're simply not in the same class as this team and it showed. pre-game All injured players except DT Rico Nason would be in the lineup today. Having Russ Sailer back should be huge for our passing game. After a couple weeks of studying their performances on film, we gave QB Allen Salinas the start. This was a tough decision, but looking at his statistics he's a more accurate and more effective passer then Devin Spellman. I hope he he'll reward our faith in him. the game We received the opening kickoff and went 3 and out deep in our own red-zone. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on 4th down moved us back futher. A decent punt from our own 4 yard line gave Central Michighan the first chance to strike, taking over at our 45. Our defense looked a bit more prepared then our offense, and we appeared to stop Central Michigan on 3 downs - but wait! There's a flag on the play, and a roughing the passer penalty keeps the drive alive for Central Michigan. Central Michigan would go on to score a 33 yard field goal and take a 3-0 lead. Our offense was still ice cold, and another 3 and out gave Central Michigan the ball at their 45 yard line. In a repeat performance of their last drive, Central Michigan was saved by one of our moronic penalites on 3rd down. Eventually holding the Chippewas at our own 1 yard line, we felt grateful to be down only 6-0. Another 3 and out really had me worried. If our offense couldn't even garner a first down, we'd eventually lose the game - even if Central Michigan could only muster field goals. After punting it back to Central Michigan they took over at their 31 yard line. On first down, outslide linebacker Winfred Prescott (freshly back from injury) intercepted a pass intercepted for the tight end at the Central Michigan 43 yard line. Prescott broke through 2 tackles and rumbled down the the 11 yard line! Our offense didn't waste a second. On first down Allen Salinas found TE Norman DeLay for an 11 yard touchdown! We were up 7-6 as the first quarter came to a close. The interception and touchdown seemed to jump-start our team on both sides. Our offense wouldn't be terribly productive for the rest of the half, but we at lest gained some first downs here and there. Defensively, the big plays continued. One Central Michigan drive that seemed guaranteed to score ended when CB Ed Buchanan intercepted a pass in our end zone. Allen Salinas would toss an interception on a hail mary from the Central Michigan 38 as time expired in the first half. Both teams headed back to the locker rooms with Indiana leading 7-6. Realizing that this could be the last football game some of our team ever played, we seemed to come out of the locker room inspired. Central Michigan went 3 and out on their first posession of the half and punted the ball to our 49 yard line. QB Salinas immediately hit WR Jimmy Parr for an 18 yard gain. B.J. Konrad followed it up by plowing for a 10 yard gain up the middle. A few plays later Salinas would find Russell Sailer in the endzone to extend our lead to 8, 14-6! Not everything would prove to go our way. On the very next play from scrimmage our secondary was caught off-guard by a bomb down the right side. It ended with me throwing my hat and Central Michigan scoring a 61 yard touchdown. Our shocked defense was helpless on the 2 point converstion attempt, and instantly the game was tied at 14-14. The game's intensity was cleary rising. Allen Salinas came out gunning once again. Two huge strikes to Jimmy Parr (40 yards) and Norman DeLay (29 yards) moved us into scoring range. Sadly the offense would stall, and Norman Lofton would miss a 43 yard field goal attempt. the game remained 14-14. Central Michigan went to their ground game after the missed field goal, and consistenyl turned out runs over 8 yards long. Contstantly being knocked back on our heels, we wer basically pushed down the field into our own end zone. Central Michigan took a 21-14 lead and appeared to have seized all momentum. We'd show we still had a few tricks left up our sleeve. We called an end-around to WR Jimmy Parr to open the next drive, and he'd streak for a 19 yard gain to give us some offensive confidence. The next play was a spectacular hook-and-go route to Parr, and he burned his man for a 57 yard touchdown catch! We had tied it up at 21-21! The third quarter was over, and this game was heating up. Our small group of fans who had made the trip to Dayton, Ohio really became vocal. The ensuing kickoff put our confidence through the roof. Central Michigan was not only stopped inside the 15, but called for holding! They'd start the drive from their own 1 yard line! We felt very confident we could stop them and get the ball back inside the 50, or maybe even hope for a safety. After being stuffed for 0 and 3 yards, Cental Michigan really starts moving the ball. 2 huge penalties on us (pass intereference and defensive holding) help them along. Unbelievable to players, coaches, and fans, we are gain shoved 99 yards down the field. Central Michigan made it 28-21 with 8 minutes remaining. On our next posession we seemed to move the ball well again. QB Allen Salinas hit Jimmy Parr for 22 yards, and FB Charles Lyle for 11. Some short runs by B.J. Konrad helped us eek out another first down. Down to the Central Michigan 35, we were forced into a 3rd and 10. Heavy pressure forced QB Salinas to get rid of the ball early, and he was intercepted at the 10 yard line. There were only 5 minutes remaining, and we were getting a bit concerned. Immediately forcing them into a 3rd and 11, we hope we can hold them and get another shot to tie the game. We have no such luck, and the Chippewas move the ball 20 yards for another time-consuming first down. Central Michigan grinds out another 2 first downs, and we officially reach a boling point. It's 4th and 3 at our 27 with 1:40 remaining, and we have no time outs left. Central MIchigan lines up to go for it. The ball is snapped, the quarterback drops back to pass... the ball is in the air and -- complete! 6 yards and a first down. Hearts break all along our sideline and all over Indiana. We try to deal with the harsh reality that our season is over as we watch Central Michigan kneel on the ball. Final Score: Central Michigan 28, Indiana 21 Code:

Bah. Sad to see the Hoosiers come out so flat in the big game. The recruiting class actually looks pretty decent with Vallery and Horoszowski.

For a playoff game?!?!? Man that sucks. I was hoping Indiana would go on a tear and win the national championship, in honor of our walking wounded coach. Alas, it's back to the drawing board. In any case, great season CT! Well done. |

I also thought the attendance was hilarious, and started wondering why it was so low. I guess it was the equivelant of a low-tier bowl game, and apparently it wasn't a very attractive matchup. It was probably unrealistically low though. I thought the problem in the game was our total lack of running game. Konrad kept getting shut down on first down and forcing us into really bad 2nd and long and 3rd and long situiations. Salinas simply wasn'y up to the challenge, although he played decently overall.
