Not making fun. If I had lost a ring like that I'd be pissed too.

With a slow nod of agreement, Puli took a long look around at the wemic’s chosen campsite. Excellent. They were in the shelter of a sizable rocky outcropping; although the rocks varied in size and type, many were smooth as if worked for many years by water. In the midst of this feature – the “palm” of what Puli thought of as a large, gnarled stone hand – was a smoothed-out section that probably was at one time a small pool, or what became so when the rains came. It created a perfect place for a fire, shielded from the wind and any prying eyes from all but a northeasterly direction.

Around this outcropping grew a number of sturdy evergreen bushes. Their leaves, more like needles, where prickly to the touch, and the bark gave off a pungent but not unpleasant odor. The terrain rose up gently to the east, with further rocky features and bushes breaking up the otherwise-barren landscape.

“A perfect spot…have you encamped here before, Kevan?” asked the monk.

Ugh. Completely missed this the first time through. Sorry, fellas.

"Nay, Old Father," shaking his head, Kevan responds, "I have passed through the area but rather quickly and did not stop here. It was, however, a site recommended to me by a fellow Wemic who passed through many moons ago."

After a brief pause, "The Mage may be able to find the plant he needs nearby as well. That will be helpful to us." Looking up at the pack horses, Kevan excuses himself to take care of them.

Benton looks at the setting sun, then turns to Baldar. "You may have just enough light to find the bush you need. I'll gladly escort you if you'd like, but you might check with Kevan. He would undoubtedly prove more useful to you in your search."

Puli simply nodded toward the paladin, assenting to the notion of taking the second watch. His eyes followed the bard (somewhat thankfully) as he swept out of the immediate vicinity of the camp, but then redirected to the wemic as he began to unpack. With a soft step he moved closer and began to speak to Kevan:

"Perhaps it best if I sleep during the initial watch. You can thus be free to search the vicinity of the camp for our visitor and more completely familiarize yourself with our surroundings ~ since this place is new to you as well ~ then return in the middle watch to sleep while I stand guard and lend my eyes to the darkness. Finally, you can then stand guard in the darkness of the morning while I am unfettered and can leave the camp to search. Is this arrangement suitable?"

Puli stood patiently to await the wemic's response.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Consider camp to be established and the sun to set without further incident. Please be specific in your forthcoming actions and positioning. And that's not necessarily a warning...I just want to be clear on who's where and doing what.

With a nod, Kevan responds, "As you say, Old Father." With that, he puts away his bow and unsheath his sword while he starts to familiarize himself with the surrounding.

Kevan has his longsword out with his left hand on the handaxe ready for a quick throw and is taking a walk around the vacinity of the camp. Not going terribly far but slightly expanding the radius of his path at each trip's completion. After the third trip around the camp, Kevan constricts the circle of his path again twice to end up around the perimeter of the campsite and takes a breather around the area with a slow stroll for around ten minutes but never actually entering the campsite so as to not hinder his nightvision with the light before returning to his circular path again.

Benton walks to the back of the campsite by the rocky outcropping and looks around at the rest of the campsite, the party members still in the camp, and the surrounding landscape. Benton continued to examin the area looking for the most obvious location for an unwanted encounter.

Finally the Paladin decided the most likely place was along the path the party entered on. To start with the path they entered on was the easiest access to the location. In addition, while not a Ranger, Benton realized the party had undoubtedly trampelled grass, broken bushes and left general signs of their passing. Any intelligent being familiar with the area would undoubtedly be able to follow those signs right into camp and any preditor looking for a meal, would simply follow the odors that would linger.

Benton then quickly moved away from the center of the camp in an effort to set up his bedding before another member inadvertantly took what he felt was the most dangerous spot to sleep. He walked to the area where the trail entered the campsite, stopping just long enough at his horse to remove his shield, crossbow, a couple of bolts and a bed roll. Benton moved just a few feet to the left of the path and set up his bedding.

Before Benton layed down he removed his longsword from it's sheeth and layed it on the ground. The shield was placed face down on top of the sword, this way Benton could quicly slide his left arm, which though healed was still soar from the boars tusk, through the straps and have the right arm free to grab the sword beneth. The crossbow was laid on top of the shield, and a bolt was placed in the slot, but the weapon wasn't cocked. The Paladin hoped to be able to fire at least one bolt before going into mele combat. Benton then layed with his head toward the trail and on his right side. This put his back toward the fire and his eyes on the path, preventing the light from the fire from completely blinding him to the darkness. It also places his left arm up, which allows him to quickly grab his shield and/or aim his crossbow.

Benton slows his breathing and begins to concentrate on listening for unusual sounds, an act that will continue until Puli or Kevan takes the perimeter watch.

Soriun was tired from the day's activities, so he only grunted his acknowledgement. He tied up his pony, and unpacked his camp gear. First he removed his armor, and then took out his holy symbol to pray. Once this was done, he moved to clean his pony and make sure that all of the horses were fed. Taking care of the animals helped him relax.
He then took a spot near the fire, opened his bedroll, and took out a flask of beer.
"When's dinner?" he asked as he took a healthy pull from the flask? "I think I'd like to sample some Wemic cuisine." He turned to look for the Wemic, but saw that he was busy overseeing the camp establishment. "I'm not sure if your stomaches will be thankful for it, but I'll prepare the boar with dwarven flavorings. Our food tends to run a bit rich." He smiled "But you may as well start getting used to it. Be sure to drink some beer after each bite."

Soriun cooks dinner. His weapons are close by, but not on him. He is in camp clothes; no armor.

Since Mavirr is already out patrolling the perimeter, he'll do so by quickly circling the camp, in a fairly large radius. His quick movement and wilderness knowledge would help him with this I think.

He has his rapier drawn out, and runs around with it, with the recorder in his other hand.

As the party approached the area where they now camped, Baldar could hardly have missed the bushes with the spiny leaves and familiar smell. "Wignanty bushes, just as the Wemic said," he mused to himself. But the process of creating his potion from the boar tusks would take some time and he still needed to go over some of his incantations for tomorrow, so he decided to leave harvesting the leaves for the morning.

Baldar settled down away from the opening leading to camp, a short distance from Soriun's left. He pulled back a small distance from the fire so as not to catch a spark on the pages of his spellbook and began studying, becoming oblivious to the outside world as he absorbed himself in the words of magic.

Just a reminder that your characters' responses must be dependent upon what Mavirr is about to do.

Mavirr had been patrolling for quite awhile, when he stopped all of a sudden. He was to the southwest of the camp, with Benton sleeping close-by to the south. With his recorder already out, he started back quickly to the entrance of the camp while blowing a high-pitched sound in two short intervals.

I'm not sure how long it'll take for Mavirr to reach the entrance, and if the recorder will wake anyone up... so WSUCougar will have to specify if I reach the entrance by the time someone posts their next message, and if anyone woke up from the recorder blowing. I'm assuming it'll take more than one roleplay to run back and to talk.

Assume that Soriun has finished his meal and is either sleeping or almost so. Benton Gale is feigning sleep and hears Mavirr's warning immediately. Puli is asleep. Baldar is either immersed in his magic or asleep. Kevan is out of the camp.

Benton actually wasn't sleeping, just laying down in a position to protect the rest of the party.

So I think I can assume I hear the recorder.

Benton quickly moves the crossbow off the shield, slides his left arm in the shield and uses the right to grab his sword.

Since he never removed his armor before laying down, Benton is now ready to face whatever may appear. Using his listening skill, Benton stands quietly listening for any rustling in the bushes.

Coug, if this doesn't work let me know and I'll redo it or you can just delete it.

Benton, while listeing for any sounds of approaching danger, says in a voice loud enough to be heard by Sourin, but hopefully not loud enough to draw attention from those outside of camp says, "Sourin, we may be facing a battle soon, you should quickly arm yourself and put as much armor on as you can."

Benton also says to Baldar, "Wizard, please take a second and wake up Puli."

Benton plans on moving to intercept any approaching sound, hopefully buying time for Sourin to rearm and Baldar and Puli to prepare for any problem that may arise.

Baldar peered intensely into his tome. The inflection of the Magic Missle spell was always tricky for him and he concentrated as he went over the sound and proper accent in his head...

Upon hearing his name, he raised his head with a deep sigh, irritated at the interuption to his vital studies. He seemed to have missed the first part of whatever the paladin was saying, but the words "wake up Puli" snapped Baldar's mind to the present situation. As Benton moved towards the opening in the camp, Baldar figured trouble was afoot.

"Old One, wake up!" he hissed loudly as he shook the monk with some urgency. "The paladin has heard something. We must ready ourselves." He turned to see Benton no longer there.

Blast! The paladin must already be rushing towards whatever he heard.

"Benton," Baldar said in a low tone, although already a little louder than he dared, "Wait! What's out there? We must stay here where we are well-defended and can attack from a distance."

Benton had no intention of wondering out into the brush in search of the approaching threat. However, he also had no intention of standing silhouetted by the fire, so he quitely slipped just outside of the camp and took up a position behind a rather large bush. Benton heard the Wizard's cry, but decided to stay quite rather than potentially giving up his hiding place to an unseen observer.

Benton continued to listen closely for the anything approaching hoping to intercept it before any damage could be done.

Benton thought to himself, "Damn Mavirr where are you and what's the problem?"

Puli bolted upright at the first touch of the wizard, and sprang quickly to his feet in a crouch. Although the fire was relatively low, the light still blinded him beyond the inner circle of the camp.

“What is it?” he asked Baldar, peering about with only moderate sense of urgency. His mental training - long ingrained - held true, and he had promptly calmed himself. “Do we not know? I will stay here if you wish, but…” and here he cast a quick look to the dwarf, who was dressing his armor. “…I would be of more use beyond the immediate circle of camp."

Yes, Soriun will take time to gear up. I’ve PMd Daedelus for the wemic’s response.

Baldar fell back with a gasp as the monk leapt into action. He had foolishly expected him to require a good deal of effort to wake and had forgotten his extensive training in martial disciplines. Gathering himself, he answered, "I don't know what's going on. Benton told me to wake you and then rushed out of camp. Go scout if you want, but be wary out there. I'll stay with the dwarf."

"Don't worry about me, gents" grunted the dwarf as he struggled to pull on bits of his armor. "If I run into trouble, I can swing my axe with or without armor. Go on ahead if you wish," he said with a huge smile. "If our shadow was from the group of thieves, they may be trying to distract us so that they can ransack our camp and find out what we know. I'll stay here and ensure that they don't have an easy time of it if they do come."

Soriun is ready to fight, even if he is not fully armored. His waraxe is within grasp, or is going to be very, very soon.

"I'm staying behind Dwarf. I prefer to know more about what I face before taking action." Baldar straightened out his robe and then opened it slightly, to allow for quicker access to his spell components if needed.

Shielding his eyes from the brightness of the fire, Puli cast a puzzled glance back at the wizard and dwarf, unsure if he’d missed the humor because of cultural differences or if he was merely distracted by the other matters at hand. It mattered not. With a quick turn he vanished into the darkness, seeking to learn more of their situation.

Benton, who was still hiding behind a big bush, turned back to campsite to make sure the Monk and Dwarf were preparing for what was ahead. He watched the conversations taking place and was satisfied that the party members were preparing quickly, just as he was about to turn away from the camp and focus again on the trail, Benton witnessed the Monk slip into the darkness of the brush. Benton made a mental note that Mavirr, Kevan, and now Puli were all in the area. He would have to be careful not to accidentally attack a friend.

Benton turns away from the campsite and again attempts to listen for sounds of anyone approaching.

Mavirr ran into the entrance of the camp and greeted Benton, who was also located near the entrance.

"Hello friend!" He looked around and saw that everyone was awake, then grinned.

"My recorder playing worked! But do not be too alarmed friends. There is no one behind me." He grinned at Benton, then noticed Soriun getting ready.

"Oh. I'm sorry to have stirred the dwarf. I didn't mean to cause such alarm. I heard something to the east of the camp. And since I was located to the southwest, I decided to run back to the south entrance of the campsite to just report back with what I heard."

Mavirr closed his eyes and scratched the back of his head. He then opened his eyes and saw that at least one pair of eyes weren't looking too cheerful.

"Let me explain first! I heard a slight metallic sound, like that of chain mail, or a sword. I think this is cause enough for alarm. You can never be too careful!" He grinned for an unprecedented third time, this time he looked at everyone in turn.

"I think someone should go out and see what it is, in case it's a petty pilferer." Mavirr looked around at the other heroes, with a somewhat serious expression on his face.

Feeling more comfortable after becoming more familiar with the nearby areas, Kevan had hoped to slight breather just north of the camp when he heart a slight metallic sound coming from the east. The Ranger had to make a quick decision: warn the camp but take the risk of being caught flat-footed as well as losing his night-vision to the campfire or hope someone in the group managed to be aware enough to notice the noise as well and press for advantage. With so many experience adventurers amongst the group, Kevan had to trust them to know better than to all bunk down. With his longsword in one hand and his trusty throwing axe in his other, the Ranger circles around the source of that noise, moving as silently as possible.

Benton finally heard the rustling of bushes, as he turned to protect the campsite, he wasn’t surprised to see Mavirr approaching, but he was surprised to see how close Mavirr had gotten. Benton thought “this bard can move quickly and quietly, if only I could trust his decision making”.

Mavirr ran right up to Benton and said:

"Hello friend!" He looked around and saw that everyone was awake, then grinned.

"My recorder playing worked! But do not be too alarmed friends. There is no one behind me." He grinned at Benton, then noticed Soriun getting ready.

Benton began to grit his teeth, thinking the Bard had taken it upon himself to test the group. The potential for this was something Benton feared, and he was concerned about the party’s reaction to the Bard’s stunt. Benton thought “How am I going to maintain the peace and smooth this one over? I must find a way, because Mavirr will be needed at some point in the future, and I can’t have his skills and usefulness dismissed based on a single stupid act.”

Benton was so concerned with the others reactions he didn’t hear the beginning of Mavirr’s second comment but he did catch the

“…I heard something to the east of the camp. And since I was located to the southwest, I decided to run back to the south entrance of the campsite to just report back with what I heard."

Now Benton was more interested in the facts, and less concerned about the disturbance.

Mavirr continued:

"Let me explain first! I heard a slight metallic sound, like that of chain mail, or a sword. I think this is cause enough for alarm. You can never be too careful!" He grinned for an unprecedented third time, this time he looked at everyone in turn.

"I think someone should go out and see what it is, in case it's a petty pilferer." Mavirr looked around at the other heroes, with a somewhat serious expression on his face.

Benton considered this new information. He frowned as he looked at the remaining 3 members. Benton rushed back into camp urging the Bard to follow. He looked at Sourin and said, “Help me douse the fire. If this is turns out to be no threat we can always restart it, but I’d rather not have our exact location illuminated.” As he approached the fire he used his shield to scoop up some soft dirt, which he dropped on the flames.

(I’m going to assume the fire is out)

Looking to Baldar and Sourin, Benton says, “I don’t know if you could hear Mavirr from where you were standing, but apparently he heard a metallic sound to the east of camp, and decided to warn us. I’m going to assume if Mavirr heard this sound even though he was Southwest of the campsite, Kevan did as well. I’m also going to assume Kevan will be able to use his speed to investigate and intercept anything before we would be able to locate it. Hopefully, Puli has heard a subsequent sound that will allow him to focus in on the location too.

I know you would probably rather be on the offense and hunt down the intruders, so would I, but I don’t want all of us getting separated and wondering around in the bushes. Whatever or whoever we’re up against probably has a better knowledge of the area than we do, and I think hunting the sound leaves each of us vulnerable to an ambush style attack. We should look for strategic hiding places just outside of the campsite, keeping an ear open for sounds of approaching danger. When we can zero in on the location of the threat, we can then take the offensive.

Benton turns to Mavirr and takes a deep breath, “Because we don’t know where Kevan and Puli are, and we can’t be sure either of them is aware of the threat to the east, I want you to head out and investigate. I just need you to assess the situation. You may have heard only 1 metallic sound, but that doesn’t mean it’s just 1 person approaching. If you can, listen out for Puli and Kevan as well. I’d prefer you try to join them, so no-one is isolated.”

Benton states in a tone only slightly less stern than a parent scolding a child, “Don’t do anything stupid.”

“We are here to help. If you find yourself in a situation that requires us to come to your aid, or you see Kevan and Puli are in a situation needing aid, blow your recorder 2 times. Assuming you can safely do it, continue to make the sound every 30 seconds or so. This will allow us to find you quicker.”

“If you have found something and are heading back to report blow your recorder 1 time, wait about 30 seconds and repeat the note. If you are fleeing back to our location blow the recorder 3 times to alert us. Then run for all you are worth. We’ll be waiting to jump your pursuers.”

With that Benton extends his hand to the Bard

He also turns to Sourin, “Good Priest, do you have a prayer for protection that you could place on the Bard?”

"Paladin, what about a more subtle plan? We have numerous party members skilled at stealth and missle weapons. We can prepare an ambush of our own while waiting to ascertain the source of the sound's intentions. To that, I say we leave a couple of party members, such as myself and Soriun, in the camp as bait while the rest of you take up positions around the camp. If the source of the sound is hostile, we may be able to take them captive and question them as I can attempt to render them unconscious with my magic."

"We should be especially wary however. I would not expect a group of nomads in these badlands to wear armor or carry swords...unless they had won them from a previous adventuring group. I am highly curious as to what could be out there."

Benton looks to Baldar. "I had thought of that option, but was certainly not going to ask you or Sourin to pose as bait. However, if you willing to do it, I think we should combine the two plans? With Kevan and Puli already on the perimeter, I don't think we can hope to completely ambush anyone. I'm afraid we'll have to assume they will be ntercepted by the skills of our Monk and Ranger on the perimter, or the threat will see or hear them searching and realize we are aware of there presence. They won't however know how many of us there are."

Benton still looking to Baldar "Why don't you stay in camp, and prepare your spell."

Turning to the Dwarf, "Sourin and I will take up a location outside of camp and look to ambush any approachers."

Now looking at Mavirr, "With this new twist I think it would be wise if you search out the sound, but don't get to far from the campsite. I want you to be able to aid in the ambush. In fact, I'd like to see you circle in behind the intruders after our initial assult. I still would like you to attempt to find Kevan or Puli though, so you can update them on our actions, and try to combine forces. The warning blows on the recorder still hold."

Benton heads back to the location where he was sleeping to retrieve his crossbow. He also plans to grab his full quiver from the horse.

Perched a short distance from the inner camp, Puli listened with frustrated impatience at the excessive chatter of his quest-mates. He could make out few individual words, but he noise was ample in the otherwise still night. He was pleased to note that the remnants of the fire were promptly doused, however.

Good stuff, guys! Due to the separation of characters, some things may play out via PM. You may continue with the character actions in camp.

Soriun is finishing up with his armor. The fire is out. And we are traveling north, JAG.

The dwarf hefted his axe, and turned to Benton. "I can bless the bard until the end of time, but I doubt it would stick. Have you ever tried to bless a rock? Or a tree? I just doesn't work. Nevertheless..."
Soriun closed his eyes and asked that the blessings of Clangadin be bestowed on the bard.

When finished, he moves to Benton's side. "Shall we go?"

Soriun casts bless, and partners up with Benton Gale. The "holy duo" is born.

Benton retrieves his items and takes up a location in the bushes - strategically positioned to watch the eastern entrance to the camp while keeping a site line that allows him to protect the Wizard.

Baldar nodded his agreement to the knight and moved to the side of the camp opposite the entrance. "How would this camp look to the outsider?" he thought. Probably as if they had just doused their fire to go to sleep. Would the outsider be looking for a sentry? Quite possibly, but if so, there was little Baldar could do about it. To complete the subterfuge, he brought himself to a position of repose and narrowed his eyelids only open enough so he could just see out of them. He steadied his breathing so that the rise and fall of his body would match that of one who sleeps while he pulled out his pouch of fine sand and put a handful into his palm. In his mind, he went over the words to his spell and mouthed the words: "Sahsh sahsh malahsh. Sahsh sahsh malash." He was a little nervous being in such a vulnerable position, but he hoped his companions would intercept any overly dangerous enemies. Baldar also prepared himself for the possibility that a battle could occur outside the camp. If that was the case, he would have to be quick to leave the camp and assess the situation to see how he could best aid the party. He stared through the slits of his eyes and looked out into the no longer empty wilderness for his potential target.

Mavirr attentively listened to Benton's instructions, and then saluted him as he ran out of the campsite. He had his rapier drawn out, and his recorder in his other hand. As Mavirr began to quietly run towards the noise, he thought to himself: This'll be fun! I can't wait to re-tell the story of my heroic deeds of night watchman!

Question:

I'd like some input from all of you guys. Given the current circumstances where the party is split up, in a "normal RPG" setting I would limit my disclosure of events to only those characters directly involved. I can continue to do this via PM as I have been doing. However, if you guys are willing and able to pay close attention to what your character is and is not aware of (and I will devote extra effort to being specific), we can play this whole thing out here in the thread for better dramatic writing opportunities.

I am open to either method, so please give me your input.

I think normally I would say definitely keep it in PMs because I don't want to be spoiled even though I wouldn't change how I was writing based on the extra information I know as opposed to my character knowing. In this case though, anyone else who might be reading along in the dynasty might miss some fun.

Anyway, my input is I leave it at your discretion. If you think it would be more interesting to post it, feel free to do so. If you think it would be more interesting to see how we would react to a situation without any real life foreknowledge, feel free to keep it to PMs.

I think it is more fun to do it by PM.

Coug,

I say use PM, but maybe put in a few place holder posts so you can go back and fill in the results of all the conversations when the action is finished. This would allowing the party members in the separates groups to read what the others faced, and allow casual readers to follow the story better.

I agree. But don't post the results until like... when this thing is over, or way later. Maybe stuff happens that the others shouldn't know about.

Great idea! Sounds like a consensus in any case (Puli concurs, and wemic votes don't count ).

We'll do it that way.
