Hempstead, NY - The goal during the Jets bye week was to continue negotiations with John Abraham and sign him. The Jets and Abraham have come to an agreement that will pay Abraham $51.2 million over the next six seasons, the largest contract signed by a defensive end. The deal includes an $11.2 million signing bonus.

Abraham was a Pro-Bowl selection following the 2001 and 2002 season, however, in 2003 he was held to just 6.5 sacks, his lowest total since his rookie season. Abraham appears to be the player the Jets envisioned they saw following the 2002 season. Abraham has matched last years sack total in just 9 games, he has also been a disruptive force on many running plays. Abraham has been healthy the past two seasons and is now a Jet through 2009.

Hempstead, NY - There is still a lot of football to be played this season, but yesterday's lost to the Dolphins put the Jets into a tough situation for the remainder of the season. In a home game, and a division rival the Jets just did not get going, and showed the signs in the weaknesses they posses. They could not run the ball effectively, or stop the pass. The Jets ran for just 96 yards yesterday, and gave up 261 yards passing.

The Jets got on the board on their first drive when Doug Brien connected on a 52 yard field goal in the rain. Miami and the Jets would exchange touchdowns back and forth and back to Miami once again, and a Dolphin lead at the half, 17-10. The Jets would come out and be totally dominated in the third quarter, and fall further behind 24-10. The Jets would rally late but come up short as the Jets ran out of time on the Dolphins 29 yardline.

Offensively Pennington was effective against the tough D, completing 19 of 31 passes and zero interceptions. However, the running game was inconsistent, as Curtis Martin was held to 55 yards on 17 carries.

Defensively, John Abraham led the way once again, and showed why he earned the big contract. Abraham finished the game with 5 tackles and one sack. Sam Cowart led the team in tackles with 12. Molden and Shepherd struggled at cornerback once again for the Jets, as Chris Chambers beat them for 6 catches and over 100 yards receiving.

The Jets will be without Travis Claridge for approximately 3 weeks with an elbow injury. Chad Pennington suffered a sprained ankle, but did not miss any snaps and is listed as probable for next weeks home game against Seattle.

Outlast Hawks

Hempstead, NY - The Jets exciting victory yesterday, was quickly put to rest when the team came in for afternoon films and review of yesterday's 19-16 win.

Doug Brien's 51 yard field goal with four seconds left lifted the Jets to 6-5 and knocked Seattle to 7-4. It was Brien's fourth field goal of the game, and second from 50+. Both were kicked in the final three minutes of the game.

Offensively the Jets did enough against the tough Seahawks D, to give Brien five chances on field goals, and scored a touchdown on Lamont Jordan's 7 yard run in the second quarter. Pennington was fairly solid, completing 29 of 42 passes for 246 yards, and one interception. The Jets continued their struggles in the red zone once again. Pennington led them there on four different occasions, however, the Jets only came away with one touchdown. You have to wonder if McGregor is starting to lose a little confidence in the running game. Curtis Martin carried only 13 times for 41 yards. For Martin it was the fewest times he carried the ball in over a season. Santan Moss made some clutch catches for the Jets down the stretch, he finished with 7 receptions for 74 yards.

Defensively, the Jets were led by Boss Bailey, who had 9 tackles, and a half of a sack. Bailey also forced a fumble, recovering it. Bailey continues to excel for the Jets defense. Alex Molden was in the starting line up, over Jacoby Shepherd this week. Perhaps it was enough to allow Molden to further adjust to the Jets' defensive shemes. Seattle was held to just 225 yards passing on the afternoon. Shaun Ellis had a solid game, recording a half sack and forcing Dilfer to hurry his throw on three other occasions.

Claridge is still listed as questionable for the Jets big game with San Diego this weekend. McKenzie and Pennington continue to mend from minor ankle injuries and are both expected to play.

The Jets will need this game against the Chargers, as it has playoff implications all over it.

One Yard Victory

One Yard Victory

The New York Jets were sloppy for the first 57:31, in which they mustered just three points and 164 yards in offense, however, they trailed by just six, 9-3. The Jets took over the ball with 2:29 remaining, needing to go 89 yards in order to keep their playoff goal alive. On the first play Curtis Martin scampered 19 yards, the Jets in hurry up offense got one more play off, a 1-yard run in to the middle of the line by Martin, as the two minute warning came. The Jets now would only be able to stop the clock two more times, and they still needed to go 69 yards. After an incomplete pass on second down the Jets faced a 3rd and 9. Pennington would be sacked for an 8-yard loss, and the game seemingly over. However, on fourth down Pennington hit Moss for a 19 yard completion to keep the drive alive. In hurry up offense Pennington threw two straight incompletions before striking Moss again, this time for 15 yards, and into San Diego territory 57 seconds remaining, the Jets used their second timeout. Pennington than hit Moss once again, this one, the long one that was needed, 33 yards, however, Moss did not get out of bounds forcing the Jets to use their last time out. After two straight incompletions into the endzone the Pennington struck Calico who came up short getting into the endzone. With the clock running down and 4th down on the 1-yard line, the Jets had to run a quick play, Pennington called a run up the middle that Martin scored on easily, and gave the Jets the victory.

"When I hit Tyrone on 3rd down, I thought he could get it in. I got to the line, called the play just once, the line heard me as well as Curtis, and they did the rest to give us the score," said Pennington.

"When Chad threw the ball to Tyrone, I thought we had just lost the game, I did not think that we would have the chance to get the ball off. The officials did briefly delay in spotting the ball, what could have been just the time needed for Chad to call the play and get it off," said Coach McGregor.

The victory moved the Jets into the final playoff spot with four games remaining. The Jets must travel to San Francisco next week and play the struggling 49ers, however, after that they must head down to Miami to face the first place Dolphins.

Jets Strike Gold

Jets Strike Gold

The Jets traveled into San Francisco tied with New England for second place in the AFC East, one-half game behind Miami. The team needed the victory to continue its drive towards the playoffs.

On a rainy day the Jets did just that, they defeated the Forty-Niners, 13-10 in a physical game. The Jets offense held the ball for nearly thirty-eight minutes, while running the ball for a total of forty-two times. Martin (22 car, 64 yards) was the leading carrier. Pennington completed 19 of 29 passes for 185 yards, none were bigger than the 4th down completion late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. On a 4th and 4 with 1:16 remaining in the game the Jets led 13-10, Coach McGregor passed on the chance to kick a 33-yard field goal and turn the ball back over to San Francisco. Pennington took the snap from Mawae took a quick drop and fired a bullet to Chrebet for 9 yards, and the game.

"Looking back at the play, I guess it was a little more of a risk than I thought. However, we made it, and it looks like a great call. If we missed it I am sure I would have been questioned. But, looking at the situation, the field was a little torn up, Brien had missed an earlier attempt, I just did not want to put our kicker in that situation. Chad felt like we had the right play called, he was told that if it was not there, take the timeout and then we would kick. I guess he saw what he wanted?" McGregor stated after the game.

With Miami's lost to St.Louis the Jets now are in first place of the AFC East with their big showdown with the Dolphins next week. The Jets will be without Travis Claridge, who has had a difficult time staying healthy this season, and Cowart is listed as questionable. Pennington, McKenzie and Shepherd are all listed as probable.

Fourth Quarter Collapse

Fourth Quarter Collapse

Hempstead, NY - Things are quiet around Weeb Ewbank Hall today, as the Jets try to explain how they let the Dolphins score 10 points in the final five minutes. It had appeared that the Jets were well on their way of defeating the Dolphins in Miami, and revenging their Week 11 loss to the 'Phins. The loss dropped the Jets out of first place by one-half of a game to the Dolphins, and are now tied with New England who also lost this week. One-half game behind the Jets and Patriots are the Bills who defeated New England 17-15. The Jets still hold a spot in the post season in what has become an extremely tight race.

Coach McGregor, looked like a coach who was frustrated by yesterday's results. "This is a tough business, and there are a lot of things that have been disappointing about this season, however, we are still in the race for this thing, and are now prepared to move on and plan for Arizona." The Jets will face the Cardinals this week who have shown signs of being a competitive team as of late. The Cards have won two of there last three behind rookie free agent quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who surprised everyone when he beat out veteran Jeff Blake, who was later released.

The Jets once again controlled the clock with the run, carrying the ball 43 times for 157 yards. Rarely used return man, Chad Morton provided a spark with the run, as he carried 11 times for 58 yards. Martin once again provided the tough inside yards, as he went for 65 yards on 24 carries. Martin has failed to average over 4.0 yards per carry in each game this season. Something that is a concern to McGregor. "We realize the numbers on Curtis on not impressive, however, he is the one carrying the ball into the middle of the line and grinding out some tough yards, he also, has provided help in the passing game." Martin has caught 70 passes this season.

Pennington was intercepted two times and did not throw for a touchdown. Chad has been intercepted 5 times in the past 4 weeks, something that the Jets can ill-afford to do with their slow moving offense.

The defensive play was solid once again, holding their opponents to under 300 yards in total offense. It marked the fourth straight solid performance from the defense.

With the play of the D as of late, and the strong team running game the Jets could make some noise, if they can get to the playoffs?

O-Line Mess

Hempstead, NY - As the Jets begin their preparation for the Cardinals this week the staff announced today that Travis Claridge would be out for the game with a Elbow injury, and now Jason Fabini is listed as "out." Fabini injured his ankle against the Dolphins mid-way through the second quarter but stayed in the game. The injury has not healed at all and it now appears that Fabini has injured his achillies tendon, his return would be for the playoffs if the team makes it.

With the injury to Fabini the Jets had to make a roster move this week. the team signed veteran tackle, L.J. Shelton who can play the left tackle position. In order to make room for Shelton the team released seldom used linebacker, Roderick Royal.

This weeks O-Line will have Machado at left guard instead of right guard, the rookie, Quinn Christensen at right guard, Lance Nimmo at right tackle, and Kareem McKenzie will jump to the left side for the first time since his senior year at Penn State.

Other injuries, starting cornerback, Alex Molden, who has played better as of late, suffered strained abductor muscle and will be out for this week's game. John Abraham is listed as questionable with a knee injury, but he said he will play.

Champs or Chumps!
Jets defeat Cardinals, set-up season finale with the Pats.

Hempstead, NY - The Jets victory yesterday kept the teams playoff and divisional championship hopes alive. It took the Jets the whole sixty minutes to defeat the stubborn Cardinals, 21-17.

Pennington connected with Wayne Chrebet from 8 yards out, with twenty-nine seconds left to put the Jets ahead for good. The Jets outplayed Arizona in all areas of the game, yet they almost suffered a season ending defeat. Chad Pennington had perhaps his best game of the season, completing 26 of 37 passes, for 251 yards and two touchdowns, playing behind a makeshift line. The Jets also ran the ball effectively, led by Curtis Martin, 23 carries for 83 yards. The Jets ran a ball contolled offense to deal with the rainy conditions. The held the ball for nearly thirty nine minutes and compiled 373 yards, to the Cardinals 270 yards. Despite the rain, neither team commited a turnover.

On defense the Jets were led by Sam Cowart. Cowart finished the game with 13 tackles, and shows why he deserves serious consideration for All-Pro honors this season. Cowart, playing with a broken thumb, has compiled 116 solo tackles this season, tied for second in the league. The rookie quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger made some good throws, including a 42 yard strike to veteran wideout, Keenan McCardell. The Cards other big play was running back, Michael Shipp's 35 yard run. The Cards accumulated 270 yards in total offense, if you take away those two plays they had 198 yards.

John Abraham did play the whole game despite a sprained knee, but was ineffective. He is listed as questionable for this week's game against the Patriots, and will be a game time decision. The Jets O-Line will have to provide protection for the Jets passing and running game one more week, as Fabini and Claridge remain doubtful.

The playoff scenario for the Jets is pretty simple, win in New England and you are the division champs. Lose, then the winner of the Buffalo, Miami game becomes division champs, the Patriots are the wild card, then your only chance to get in is if the Colts lose at home to Jacksonville.

Victory At A Cost!

Hempstead, NY - The Jets defeated the Patriots 26-21 to capture the AFC East crown for the second time in three years. But the victory did come at a cost. Early in the second quarter the Jets lost Chad Pennington with a knee injury that looked bad. Leading 14-0, and playing extremely well, Pennington stepped back to pass, Pats defesive linemen rushed Pennington's throw, with the quarterback falling awkwardly over Hamilton. The result sent Pennington to the locker room, and the Jets hearts in their throats.

Enter Tim Rattay for the first time this season. Rattay has not seen game action since the preseason, but, you would not have known it. Rattay the most unlikely hero, came in and performed flawlessly. He completed 17 of 21 passes for 164 yards and more importantly, no turnovers. Feeling the pressure as well was Curtis Martin, who carried 29 times for a season high, 151 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was his longest carry of the season, 59 yards.

Said Martin, "Chad is the leader of the offense on the field, and when he went down, you could feel a bit of tension in the huddle. For the line to open up that hole, and us to score right away with Tim in there, gave us the boost we really needed at that time."

Pennington had an MRI this morning that revelad no structural damage to the knee, however, he will be out 2-4 weeks, and is officially listed as questionable for there game in two weeks.

The positive was the victory, a complete victory. The team played well in all areas, you have to expect a good football team like New England to make some plays, especially with their season on the line. The Jets had learned while taking the field that the Indianpolis Colts were defeated by the Jaguars and that they were now in the playoffs, however, that would not take away their focus. The Jets wanted the division, and a chance for a first round bye. The bye will allow Fabini, Claridge, and Molden play, something they have not for a few weeks now. It also allows Abraham to get back to full strength and just maybe help Pennington prepare his knee to play.

Coach McGregor, who took over in January 2003, has this team believing in itself for maybe the first time during his reign. McGregor who at times appeared he would lose this team has kept to his ways never wavering on his decisions, he has stuck by his decisions something that the team has learned to appreciate. Kevin Mawae stated, "he is a straight shooter, he does not give a crap what you have done in the past, only what you just did."

The Jets are now at a place that looked bleak at the halfway point when the team was 4-4, but they settled down defensively, and found ways to win.

Hempstead, NY - The team began going through some practice reps with Tim Rattay running the first offense. Rattay is in his fourth season, first with the Jets after spending the previous three with San Francisco. Rattay was drafted in the 7th round of the 2000 draft out of Louisiana Tech. He came to the Jets through free agency after being released by the Forty-Niners. Rattay was signed with the Jets to compete with Brooks Bollinger for the second string job, Rattay beat out Bollinger, who was also beat out by rookie free agent, John Navarre.

Rattay has been in a west coast offense setting for 8 years now, including college, he throws with accuracy and has good pocket awareness, the concern is that he does throw interceptions, something you cannot afford in playoff football. So expect the Jets to give a heavy dose of Curtis Martin and Lamont Jordan in their game in two weeks.

AFC Matchup
4:30 on ABC
Buffalo (8-7-1) at Pittsburgh (10-6)

Buffalo dominated all game, outgaining Pittsburgh 427-227, as Bledsoe completed 22 of 27 passes, for 310 yards and a touchdown. However, the Steelers made the key plays when they had to and also had some things go their way. Buffalo's rookie kicker, Tommy Pyatt had a game he would like to forget. He missed one extra point in the second quarter, missed a 33-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter, than this:

Nineteen second left, Pittsburgh clinging to a 21-20 lead, rookie kicker Tommy Pyatt lines up for a 23 yard field goal, the snap, the hold, the kick is BLOCKED!! Pittsburgh has blocked the kick and will pack their bags for New York. The Steelers have defeated the Bills 21-20.

NFC Matchup
8:00 PM on ESPN
Carolina (10-6) at Dallas (11-5)

The Cowboys come in to the playoffs as the NFC East Champs, as expectations are high for the first time since the mid-90's. They have one of the best defenses in the game, and have found their running back late in the season in Thomas Jones, formerly of Arizona. Carolina is without their starting quarterback, Jake Delhome. The Panthers were led by Charlie Batch, who helped Denver earlier in the season.

This game would be one of defense, in which the defenses of these two teams forced seven turnovers, four forced by the 'Boys D. The Cowboys would do enough to find the victory, 20-9. Thomas Jones helped Dallas control the clock as he carried 21 times for 101 yards and a touchdown. Joey Galloway provided a spark in the passing game, catching 8 balls for 130 yards. If Carter can prevent the interceptions he is accustomed to throwing the Cowboys have the pieces to make some noise in the playoffs.

NFC Matchup
1:00 on FOX
New York Giants (10-6) at Detroit (9-7)

The Giants got off to the early lead 10-0 when Collins hit Toomer early and Mike Hollins connected on a short field goal, however, that would not last long as Joey Harrington and company got rolling. The Lions scored 14 unasnswered points and led at the half 14-13.

In the second half the teams exchanged touchdowns before Detroit took control. Hambrick and Mahe would each score on rushing touchdowns and the Detroit D would hold the Giants to three drives in the fourth quarter all resulting in three and outs.

The Lions rolled off 430 yards in total offense, led by Harrington who completed 22 of 33 passes for 290 yards, 2 touchdowns and one interception. Troy Hambrick continued to be solid rushing the football, he would rush for 90 yards on 18 carries and add another 27 yards receiving on four catches. Detroit heads to the two time Super Bowl Champions next week, Tampa Bay while the Giants head home after yet another early exit from the playoffs. the Giants face a tough off-season, as Kerry Collins, their leader will test the free agent market. Collins has been 21-11 as the team's starer the last two seasons and has posted 50 touchdowns against just 21 interceptions during that span.

AFC Matchup
4:30 on CBS
Miami (9-6-1) at Denver (9-7)

The Dolphins won this tight battle 27-20. All areas of the statistics are balanced. Denver outgained Miami 370-357, both teams ran and threw the ball effectively, perhaps the only difference was that Miami's starting quarterback, Jay Fiedler started the game and lasted three quarters, compared to Jake Plummer who was unable to play once again, leaving the reigns of the Broncos in the hands of rookie quarterback, Ell Roberson. Plummer played in just 5 games this season, the team had depended on Charlie Batch who started 9 games, however, the Broncos released Batch when it appeared Plummer was coming back to the starting lineup. Plummer did come back and played, however, a shoulder injury in week 17 sent him to the bench and Roberson took the helm. Roberson did play well, (20-29-220-2td's) but was unable to drive the Broncos down the field at the end.

Fielder was knocked out late in the third quarter with a shoulder injury as well, and if the Dolphins plan on returning to the League Championship and perhaps the Super Bowl they will have to do it with Sage Rosenfels who threw just one pass during the regular season. Miami heads to Tennessee next week, the site of where their season ended last year, as the Titans advanced to the Super Bowl.

NFC Matchup
Saturday, 4PM FOX

Detroit (9-8) vs Tampa Bay (12-4)

The Detroit Lions came into Tampa Bay to face the two-time defending Super Bowl Champions with nothing to lose. The Bucs who started the season off slow, 2-3, after losing much of their offensive line, rallied in the second half to win 10 of their final 11. Quarterback Brad Johnson has been steady on offense, while defensively the Bucs have been donminating.

The Lions got off to a quick start when Terrance Holt intercepted Brad Johnson on the second play of the game and returned it for a touchdown. The Lions would use that play along with other early Bucs mistakes to lead 10-7 at the half. In fact, the Lions stretched that lead to 17-7, however, the Bucs would come back and score 24 of the final 27 points. Donald Driver would be the offensive star, catching 8 passes for 136 yards. The defense would buckle down in the second half and only allow 126 yards in total offense to the Lions. The victory send the Bucs to the NFC Championship game for the third straight season.

For the Lions, they are in great position to continue to build. All eleven starters on offense are under contract, while 9 of the 11 starters on defense are under contract. Look for the Lions to be stronger next season.

Got Away

Got Away

Last night the New York Jets hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional round of the playoffs. It would be the Jets first playoff game since 2002 when the Jets traveled to Oakland and lost. That would also mark Herm Edwards last game as the Jets coach after a bitter battle with the Organization's front office.

Coach Ed McGregor and the Jets were ready for the Steelers. The Jets are winners of 5 of their last 6. With the bye week the team got much needed rest, especially for Chad Pennington, whose knee is still not 100%.

The game started well for New York, they held Pittsburgh to a three and out, than signs to come would happen. After Pennington apparently hit Santana Moss for a big gain, deep in Pittsburgh territory, he fumbled the ball. Jason Gildon picked the ball up and returned it into Jets terriotory. Shortly after, Griese would hit Randle El for the score and the early 7-0 lead. On the ensuing drive Chad Pennington would be intercepted on the first play. However, the defense would make a big stand and force the Steelers to punt.

The Jets showed signs when they drove 92 yards on a 20 play drive, concluded by a 4-yard run by Curtis Martin, tying the score at 7 as the two teams went into halftime.

The Jets would take their first lead on a Doug Brien 37 yard field goal, but the Steelers would come right back when Griese hit Karl Williams from 25 yards out and a 14-10 lead. The Jets would get some more help from Doug Brien when he booted a 32 yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to pull within one.

That would be the end for the Jets. The offense could no longer move the ball, and the defense could not stop the Steelers as they gave up two late touchdowns.

For the game the Jets outgained the Steelers 360 to 232, however, the Steelers made far fewer mistakes as the Jets turned the ball over 3 times to zero for the Steelers.

"This is one that will sting for the winter, but this is playoff football, you cannot make that many mistakes in a football game and expect to win. I thought our defense played well today, our special teams did a nice job, however, when you turn it over you are in trouble." said McGregor.

The Jets have no choice but to begin planning for the 2005 season while Pittsburgh prepares themselves for the AFC Championship game.

Divisional Playoffs - Sunday

AFC Matchup
1:00 PM on CBS
Miami (10-6-1) at Tennessee (11-5)

The Dolphins placed quarterback Jay Fielder on injured reserve earlier in the week when the realized the severity of his injury was more serious than anticipated. They signed Jim Sorgi to replace him on the roster. Sorgi the early season with the Raiders before being released, now found himself in a most unusual spot, starting for the Dolphins in the Divisional Playoffs. Why the Dolphins did not start Rosenfels is unknown after the way he played against the Broncos in the second half of last week's Wild Card Victory.

Playing with their third quarterback in two weeks, the Dolphins offense failed to exist. The Titans held the Dolphins to just 216 yards in total offense, and just 7 points. The lone Dolphin touchdown came as the result of a Titans turnover. The Titans played the game conservatively, rushing the ball 35 times compared to just 27 passes that resulted in a closer score, 16-7, but this was never much of a game.

The Titans took control of the game following the first half, and with the exception of the sole first half McNair interception, the Dolphins never threatened, crossing midfield just twice, and starting inside Titans' territory following the McNair interception. The Titans pounded the tough Dolphins D, and by games end had worn them down. The tough running of Chris Brown allowed the Titans to take over the game in the second half. Brown finished with 116 yards on 24 carries. The Titans will host the Pittsburgh Steelers next week in the AFC Championship Game. The two did not meet during the regular season.

NFC Matchup
4:15 PM on FOX
Dallas (12-5) at St. Louis (11-5)

In what was talked about as being the most balanced game of the week the Dallas Cowboys and their tough D, traveled into St. Louis to battle "The Greatest Show On Turf." Dallas came in fresh off a 20-9 beating of the Carolina Panthers in the Wildcard game.

The first half of this game would stay close, as the Cowboys struck first on a 13 yard toss from Carter to Anderson, however, the Rams would quickly strike back when Kurt Warner hit Isaac Bruce from 42 yards out to tie the game at 7. The Rams would not stop there in the first half, as Kurt Warner threw his second score of the game, midway through the second quarter, to Kevin Curtis from 12 yards out to give the Rams a 14-7 halftime lead.

In the third quarter the two teams would exchange field goals to close the quarter out at 17-10. But, the Rams passing attack would strike once more when Warner hooked up with Shaun McDonald from 16 yards out. Wilkens would miss the extra point, as the Rams now led. 23-10. The Cowboys would make a call that can be considered questionable, kicking a 20-yard field goal with 3:31 left to make it a 23-13 game. What really makes the call questionable is that the Cowboys were out of timeouts and needed still two more possessions. I guess the 'Boys coach will have some questions to answer. The Rams victory, 23-13, sends them back to Tampa for the third time in two season. The last time the Rams were at Tampa they lost the Divisional round of the playoffs 20-16. The Rams will be looking for a different outcome this season.

2004 Offensive Evaluation

2004 Jets Evaluation

As the playoffs roll on, we began to evaluate how our season went by position group.

Quarterback - After a miserable 2003 in which he went 0-7 as the Jets' starting quarterback, Pennington bounced back to lead the team to 10-6 and the AFC East crown. Pennington statistically was much better the first half of the season, in which the Jets were only 4-4. The offense was aggressive, and Pennington threw for 12 touchdowns against only 6 interceptions. In the second half the weather did come into play in some games, and Pennington hit for 7 touchdowns against 5 interceptions, however, the team went 6-2 down the stretch to secure the number two seed in the AFC. However, Pennington can still be seen to make some bad throws, that result in costly turnovers, something the Jets could not afford against an opportunistic team like the Steelers. For the season Pennington completed over 61% percent of his passes for nearly 3,500 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He needs to come back in 2005 stronger and better for this team to continue to improve. It appears that we made the right decision to commit to Pennington and release Testaverde. Also, early in the season we made the decision to extend Pennington's contract through the end of the 2008 season. Pennington's contract is rather moderate ($18.26 million over 5 seasons) to many of the starting quarterbacks in the league. After his 2003 season, there was some concern about commiting to him until he played out the year, however, the gamble to sign him early when his asking price was down, paid off. If we had waited until after the season, his price would have been a lot steeper (keep in mind we extended Abraham to a deal for $51.23 million over 6 seasons).

Backup quarterback, Tim Rattay was called upon in the team's biggest regular season game since the end of the 2002 season. With the Jets leading the Patriots 14-0 early in the second quarter, Pennington suffered a knee injury that took him out of the game. Rattay came off the bench for the first time and performed flawlessly, completing 17 of 21 passes for 164 yards, and zero turnovers. His performance was a big reason the Jets went on to defeat the Patriots 26-21.
Grade: B

Backs - For the season the Jets ran the ball 527 times for 1904 yards, an average of 119 yards per game, 11th in the NFL, however, the team managed a mere 3.61 yards per carry, 27th in the league. Much of that can be contributed to Curtis Martin. Martin was once again the rock that you hope for from your starting running back. He finished with 1,839 yards in total offense and 13 touchdowns, while touching the ball 441 times, up 34 more from the 2003 campaign. What was raises concern however, is that Martin just did not appear to have the explosiveness he once had. Martin averaged a mere 3.32 yards per carry. Only once during the season did he average more than 4.0 yards per carry in a game, the last one when he averaged 5.2 yards. So, what do you do? Here is a man who rarely misses a down, but yet he is scheduled to be an approximate $5.6 million cap hit for 2005. I was hoping Martin could carry me through 2005, when it appears there will be several running backs on the market, however, the time might have come to invest in a back of the future.

Lamont Jordan is scheduled to be a free agent this season, his asking price is not high, however, he might be replaced at the RB2 spot by a draftee. Jordan was thought of to be the back of the future for the Jets. But he has shown little signs of being able to assume that role. He is a powerback who does have some quickness, but he lacks the ability to hit the holes. Jordan carried the ball 91 times for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns. He averaged 3.71 yards per carry, hardly what you would consider starting material. So the early thinking could be to let Jordan go through free agency and draft someone with perhaps a 3rd round pick to sit behind Martin's final year with the Jets.

Chad Morton got a handful of carries this season, and showed some of the quickness you would expect from a return man. Morton does not have the build though to be an everydown back. His role will continue to be return man duties. Morton averaged 22.5 yards per kick return this season.

Jerald Sowell might have played his last game at fullback as well. At 30 years old, Sowell's abilities have declined to the point where his blocking abilities have struggled, which is a contributing factor to our running game decline. Sowell joined the team in 1997 as a special teams player, he became the starter in 2001 after Richie Anderson and the Jets departed ways.

Second year fullback, B.J. Askew was called upon for a mere 69 offensive plays this season. He did his job effectively and will continue to be with the Jets as a reserve fullback and special teams player.
Grade: C+

Tight Ends - Anthony Becht was the starter this season, and finished with his most productive season of his career. Becht caught 40 passes for 398 yards. He lacks the ability to stretch the middle of the field however, and his blocking skills are adaquet. The statistic that catches you the most is that of his 40 receptions, zero were for touchdowns. Becht who is in the final year of his contract could have the opportunity to shop the free-agent market. Currently Becht's agent is looking for a deal worth nearly $10 million over the next 5 seasons. That would put him in the top-10 in salary for tight ends, when our scouting staff does not consider him a top-20 player at the position. There are some options in the FA market this year, Bubba Franks will be the most sought after tight end, but after him we could bid for the services of Cameron Cleeland of St Louis, Jason Dunn of Chicago or Steve Heiden from Cleveland. It will be a wait and see approach with Becht.

Chris Baker is also in the final year of his contract, but can be resigned relatively cheap, we will offer him a minimal two year deal. Baker is ok in the passing game, he does struggle with blocking. James Dearth will continue his role with the team as a special teams player, and that could be in jeopardy if we feel we need another long snapper (Machado is the current snapper).
Grade: C+

Wide Receivers - This group for the Jets was perhaps our strongest. Although we still do not possess the big receiver to start at Split End, veteran Wayne Chrebet was once again solid. Although Chrebet's catch total was down from 68 to 59 this season, he found the end zone 8 times. Chrebet was also special after the catch this season, he compiled 329 yards after the catch, an average of 5.5 yards a reception, last season his yac average was 1.4 yards a reception. That helped him average 15.5 yards per catch. Chrebet will be 32-years old next season, and with a cap hit scheduled to be $2.2 million, he will be our starter in all likely hood.

Santana Moss had a very comparable '04 season to '03. His 67 receptions was 4 more than last year, he averaged 14.1 yards per reception, finishing the season with 949 yards. He caught 6 passes for 127 yards in the Jets' playoff lost, stepping up in the big game. Moss will be entering the last season of his contract, next season, and many wonder if it will be his last as a Jet. Although he has the ability to be a top receiver, his numbers just have not justified a deal in the area of $8 million per season.

Tyrone Calico completed his second season in the NFL, and was solid as the WR3. He caught 36 passes for 498 yards and a touchdown, although slightly down from last season, Calico is developing. Calico's big frame, 6'4" makes him an ideal target for Pennington. Calico should work his way into the full-time starting line-up by 2006.

The Jets' 4th receiver this season was David Terrell, who handled the season well. Terrell did not see as much action as anticipated, and a big reason for that is that Pennington does not run any 4-wide receiver sets. Terrell saw action early in the year when Moss missed the first two games, Terrell caught 7 passes for 89 yards in which he was used as a WR3. Terrell gives us insurance at the position.

The 5th receiver position was occupied by rookie free agent, Jerricho Cotchery and Marcus Robinson. Cotchery saw action in games one and two of the season catching a touchdown pass before being injured for the year. Robinson was signed late in the season for insurance, and was never active. Robinson was with the team in 2003.

Offensive Line - The O-Line was anchored by our center, Kevin Mawae. Mawae's skills are slowly on the decline (our scout says 69), but he is still a top-10 center in the league. Mawae's run blocking abilities are not where they once were, in fact he only was successful on 18.2 percent of his key run blocks, compared to 25 percent last season. However, his pass blocking abilities were outstanding, Mawae gave up only 2 sacks for the season. Currently Mawae is scheduled for a $3.5 million cap hit next season, but he is a player the Jets need to be in the middle of this O-Line.

Last season's signing of Travis Claridge is one that has not lived up to what we had hoped thus far. Claridge was nicked up most of the season, playing in only 10 games, however, he gave up 10 sacks in those games. Last season he only gave up 4, and played every snap. Claridge's run blocking ability did come on as the season progressed, and with the relatively inexpensive price tag ($1.35 million), Claridge will be with the team next season.

The right guard position was one of concern all year. The team was unable to find a veteran through free agency so they drafted Quinn Christensen in the 5th round. Christensen did a nice job in his 9 starts, with a blocking percentage of 28.0 and allowed just 2 sacks. Christensen is an intelligent football player, but the we might look to find a better fit here with Christensen adding the depth that he was originally intended for.

JP Machado was a late free agency signing, and it was a good thing. Macado's versatility allowed him to play left guard, right guard and center when needed. He was also the team's long snapper. Machado's blocking percentage was 26.9 percent, and he allowed just 3 sacks.

Left Tackle Jason Fabini had another solid season with the Jets. Fabini started 14 games at LT, where he was dependable in his 7th season. Fabini is not the big time tackle his contract would make it appear, however, his production is hard to argue with. His blocking percentage of 35.2 percent, and he only allowed 4 sacks while blocking against some of the league's premier pass rushers.

Right Tackle Kareem McKenzie continues to be a question mark to this team, he allowed 7 sacks last season, and his blocking percentage was below 30 percent. McKenzie will probably get the start next season, but it is not impossible to think the team might look to find an elite left tackle, move Fabini to the right and McKenzie to the RG position where he might be a better fit.

Reserve linemen Paul Harker, Dave Yovanovits, Lance Nimmo are signed through next season and will compete for a roster spot. Late season signing LJ Shelton will certainly be gone, as he complained about his playing time in just the short while he was here.

As a collective unit the line allowed 25 sacks which was the second lowest total in the league, however, the rushing attack averaged just 3.61 yards per carry, 27th worst in the league.
