I didn't DIE! I didn't DIE! Sad about Marmel though. At least he is back where he belongs, wandering the German Countryside as a legend who attack dogs in the night and leave only a jar of Jif where they once remained.

At the end of a mission, if a soldier is under alien control, that soldier ends up as an MIA.... sigh.

Latest news…

Craptacular has confirmed that Swaggs bagged the Sectoid Commander!

Looks like things are heating up now...

From the New York Times:

X-COM Topples German Base!

Alien Commander Captured

Two Agents Killed; One Missing

15 September 2003 – (AP) X-COM forces yesterday captured a large German Sectoid base in what military experts are calling “a major victory” for the human forces in their nine-month old war against the aliens. The battle raged for more than two hours, with X-COM forces often engaged in room-to-room fighting with the Sectoids over the large, subterranean facility. Exact alien casualties are unknown, but are estimated to be in the dozens. X-COM forces lost two men, with unconfirmed reports indicating that they were related to alien “mind attacks”. One X-COM agent is reported as missing. In related news, X-COM command today released photos of two aliens captured in the mission, one of whom is believed to be a high-ranking commander in the alien military.

being detained at X-COM headquarters in North Dakota.

“Without a doubt,” says retired U.S. Colonel Bella Kous, “this victory is stunning testament to the bravery and skill of the X-COM forces. The minimal casualties and the capture of a live alien commander exceeded everyone’s expectations. The last time they attacked a Sectoid base, they went in with an experienced force and suffered greater than 75% casualties. Hell, they barely took the base. Yesterday, they went in with rookies and lost only three men. It goes to show you that today’s rookies are better trained, better equipped, and stronger than our vets in the early stages of the war. We’re simply a better fighting force than we were even a couple of months ago.”

The raid, which began at 2:30PM local time, was more than two weeks in the planning, although the composition of the strike force was modified at the last minute after consultations with UN Command. It is the second successful base raid that X-COM forces have carried out in the last two weeks. Early in September, X-COM forces knocked out a Muton-controlled base in western Portugal.

In a break from precedent, X-COM released photos of captured and killed aliens, as well as rare photos taken from the battle deep inside the alien base. Godzilla Blitz, executive commander of X-COM forces, stated a press conference yesterday, “We believe that the Geneva Convention applies solely to combat between human forces, and have decided to let the world judge for itself the nature of the evil that these foes represent. The people need to see the horror that threatens our planet. For too long, we have not stated our case clearly to the world.”

However, English ambassador to the United Nations, Aima Dikk, stated in a vehement rebuttal at the UN today, “This latest X-COM atrocity against our peaceful, generous neighbors in space will not be tolerated. X-COM has resorted to brainwashing and propaganda as they try to paint our benevolent extraterrestrial friends as some kind of evil ogres from outer space. X-COM’s cheap terrorism will not be tolerated. The Sectoids have only done good for the planet Earth. It is X-COM that is misleading the world, and X-COM that will ultimately force the Sectoids to respond with force to defend their economic and political interests here on earth. Our ET friends will not stoically endure such suffering forever. This latest ploy by X-COM of publishing POW photos and photos of massacred aliens is an incendiary tactic that attempts to deceive the world into believing that X-COM is actually winning the war, when in fact they are losing battle after battle against superior forces.”

England, France, and Germany have allied with the aliens, and consistently have argued for conciliation with the extraterrestrials. A majority of the world’s major countries support X-COM, but funding for the project has been reduced in the past couple of months, and a movement for allying with the aliens is gaining support among more radical political factions in the US and abroad. Polls are showing gradually deteriorating support for the “ET War” in most major countries, despite recent victories.

Sectoid base. Seconds later the aliens in this photo were killed by a grenade.

Is it just me, or do the two in the last picture look like they're doing the old:

Alien 1: "Look at how tiny their heads are."

Alien 2: "Are you sure that's real? Looks like some practical joke the commander likes to play."

Alien 1: "No, that's a 'human', are they messed up or what."

Alien 2: "Hey, what's he throwing at us?"

I arrive back at the base, happy at the success of the mission, but troubled. I had not known Katon well...both of us were new, but we'd gone through training at separate bases. But he was a comrade, a fellow soldier, and I'd had to kill him.

Worse, I'd moved as fast as I could, but it wasn't fast enough to save Sergeant Sachmo II. The Sarge and my Dad had gone through basic together, back so long ago, and he'd taught me a lot. And I'd let him down.

So, I skipped out of the party in mess, grabbing a couple of bottles on the way and headed up top. I sat on ground near the main hangar entrance and watched the sunset. Just sitting there getting progressively drunker and thinking about the Sarge, and Katon, my dad and all the others who'd died trying end this interstellar scourge...and wondering if it was all worth it.

The civs didn't seem to care. Hell, the damn limeys and frogs were in bed with the aliens. The Germans were too and it looked like the US might be leaning that way as well. Damn, we all keep bleeding and the ones we are bleeding for just keep sucking up to the enemy. Sometimes you have to wonder if you just aren't on the wrong side.

Or maybe I just got hit with one too many PSI blasts today? F--- it. I've got booze and guns and aliens to kill. Might as well pretend to be happy too.

Phew! Looks like I did reasonably well leading the mission. Good job men.

I sure was worried there for a bit. Not good for the guy carrying the blaster launcher when aliens jump out at close range. At least I got two kills out of the deal.

9 days in recovery isn't too bad a price to pay for such a rousing sucess.

Amazing!

WOW! That was very well written, had all my attention. I think I even felt the hair on t he back of my neck stand at attention. Quite a story line, I loved it! This was my frist read of this thread, and I was like, geesh, mine must suck compared to this. Great pictures, where did you get those at?

I owned all the x-com's and I loved them, but got bored after trying to take a base and kept getting my arse kicked continuously.

I will be reading many more posts from this thread with a story line like that. I may try to encorporate a story line like that into my Volleyball Dynasty.

Great Job GodzillaBlitz!

Things go unusually quiet over the next few days. Two tiny UFOs attempt to fly over Europe, but Superman—who is proving to be a deadly pilot—blows both of the things apart. Otherwise, we get a badly needed break in combat.

We use the days to move our troops around and heal. Patman II, Wignasty, and Fonzie II get back to full strength; all of them are transferred back to active bases.

We also get three new recruits in our fold. Chief Rum III is the first one in, and it looks as if the biological experiment to breed uber agents may in fact be working to near perfection; he’s got all the skills to develop into a top agent. Zippy II arrives as well. Although he doesn’t have the top qualities of Chief Rum III, he is clearly a cut above the average. Both of these men are quickly processed and shipped off to Europe. Lastly, Glen Goyne arrives at USA COM. He doesn’t have the star potential of the previous two men, but he also has no real weaknesses. He is held in the US until we clear some space in Europe.

Craptacular’s research makes some solid progress. He now believes that the alien home planet may in fact be Mars. Currently he is working on Mind Probe technology, but he is chomping at the bit to get started on our captured Sectoid Commander, who should have the final answer to the riddle of the alien origins. In Europe, research continues on UFO Navigation, one of the keys to developing faster and stronger aircraft.

Finally, after six days of quiet, EU Hyper Wave decoders pick up a small scout heading east over the US. CapnMorgan chases the thing to Europe, where Superman downs it over central Spain with a well placed anti-air missile. We load up our ASIA COM Skyranger and launch it for Europe.

The same night, EU COM radar picks up a Floater-manned medium scout that lands in France. We launch the EU COM Skyranger, and time its arrival for dawn.

The following ten men are aboard the EU COM Skyranger, which will arrive and attack first:

Kodos, Coffee Warlord II, Real Deal III, Tasan, Zippy II, Chief Rum III, Afoci, Sir Fozzie, Wolfpack, Japherwaki II.

The ASIA COM Skyranger will hit the Spanish UFO crash site about two hours later. Busy day. Let’s give ‘em hell men!

No problem. Just finished it.

Some of the base transfers are still in progress, but this is where everyone will be within 12 hours. I've got to still rearrange a bit to get more sergeants and captains at EU COM, so there will still be some shifting going on. Also, I'll be regulartly moving people between ASIA COM and EU COM if things don't balance out between the two bases.

CrashDavisSports: Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it! Feel free to sign up if you want to get in on the fighting! The photos just came from random web searching. It's amazing the things that are out there.

Everyone: Thanks for the compliments! Glad you enjoyed it!

Astott: The Blaster Launcher spot on this mission wasn't the best place to be because we really needed that Sectoid Commander, so I couldn't have you firing freely like we did on the last base mission. Still, I needed someone reliable on the Blaster Launchers (don't want an alien controlled agent with one of those!). Also, we've just flown through the next week, so you've already sat out 7 days!

Travis: Yeah, that last photo doesn't really do justice to the ferocity of the Sectoids, does it? Um, maybe Sectoids have no mouth muscles, so they can't snarl and always look kind of confused?

Lokugh: Great stuff! Don't give up the faith! We're fighting the good fight! The world will come around!

We're flush with cash now from all the big UFOs and bases we've hit so I've really been cranking up our research efforts. Both EU COM and USA COM are going full tilt with 50 scientists each, and the US is less than two weeks away from completing living space for 100 scientists. I think we're way behind in research, and I'm trying to make up for lost ground.

Your experience with the last mission doesn't sound too promising for us. I've been sticking to the Ironman type of play: no restarts, no going back to saved games, so I hope we have at least a chance of completing the final mission on the first try. The only time I'm going back to previously saved games is when I make a mistake that results in unrealistic actions (click and move someone in a direction that makes no sense), but even then, I don't think I've gone back to a previously saved game in over 30 missions. I was going back to previously saved games a bit in the beginning of X-COM II (maybe 6 times total?), and more than I wanted to in our first game (probably a dozen times?), but decided to just go hardcore after realizing the restarts were taking the suspense out of the game.

And lastly...

Next mission should go up tonight.

Go FOFC X-COM!

Welcome to MSNBC news. Today we have a special interview with X-COM pilot Superman54.

Reporter: Your job is to patrol the skies of Europe and shoot down any alien activity. Is that right?

Superman: Pretty much I just blow up the small ships and disable the bigger ships and let the ground agents clean the mess up.

Reporter: What do you do with your free time when you are not hunting down alien ships?

Superman: I also have a day job as the X-Com grocery shopper. When I'm not shootin' down ships I'm shoppin' for chips. Thats my motto.

Reporter: Interesting... What would the most popular item when you are out grocery shopping?

Superman: For some reason the X-Com base is always in need of peanut butter. We can never have enough peanut butter.

Reporter: Are you ever worried when you are facing the aliens in a dog fight?

Superman: Not really I am a perfect 4-0 when it comes down to me and an alien ship. I never miss my target, I'm just to damn good. (Red light starts flashing in background... alarm sounds...)

Superman: Well it looks like it is back to my job. Another one bites the dust...

Whoot I have been instantiated!

I look to be pretty survivable except for that darned reaction time. I only have a few points of reaction over Japherwaki, and we know how quick he is.

I am not complaining....but I did note that I was sitting over in USA COM with a bunch of guys that are AFK. I am SO gonna screw with them while not out in the field.

Oh and still not complaining...just nit picking. The name should be Glengoyne, all one word.

Also Nice write up as usual. Love the pics. I havent met Kodos, was one of those him?

Sweet, only two more days until I get back in the action. Thank goodness. You have no idea how boring it is down here in South America with only a bunch of people laying around in beds groaning as company...

Do you realize that after 11 missions I've still got the best kills per mission ratio of anyone with at least 4 missions? I've been telling you since the beginning that I'm on to something with my modified plasma rifle...

...AStott goes back to playing "catch the bedpan" with Alf III...

Are all the folks in SAM COM wounded?

This may be a bit of a problem. I once had a base hit when all the men inside were wounded or possibly out on a skyranger mission. I lost the base, and the wounded automatically IIRC. May want to throw some nameless scrubs down there to use to protect the place.

I think cause GB isn't using SAMCom as an interceptor base at the moment, the chances of the Aliens discovering the base are low, if not zero.

67th Mission: Floater Dance in France

The EU Skyranger races through the early morning light. Its destination: a Floater-manned, medium scout that has touched down in the countryside east of Paris. We’ll be striking at dawn (if our Skyranger pilot comes through), and hope to make quick work of the enemy.

Kodos is leading a group of 7 squaddies and 2 rookies today. He is the only officer on board, but is going for his coveted 20th mission. No agent has made it through so many missions, and this would be a momentous day for X-COM if he can live for the next two hours. Sachmo II would have had this honor, but he was killed in the base assault last week. The honor, or onus, now falls on Kodos’ shoulders.

The Skyranger begins its descent…

Our troops today:

Left Side:
1. Kodos (Heavy Plasma, Stun Launcher, Power Suit)
2. Zippy II (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
3. Wolfpack (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
4. Read Deal III (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
5. Tasan (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)

Right Side:
1. Sir Fozzie (Blaster Launcher, Power Suit)
2. Chief Rum III (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
3. Japherwaki II (Blaster Launcher, Power Suit)
4. Afoci (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
5. Coffee Warlord II (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)

As the Skyranger drops the last 200 meters to the dimly lit ground below, our troops take a look at today’s battlefield. We’ll be landing in an open field on the southeast corner of the battle zone. We can make out the cross-shaped UFO lying to the left of where our Skyranger will come down, about 40 yards away. The door should be facing our craft, so there shouldn’t be a long wait for action. The only other feature that we can make out on the battlefield is a L-shaped hedgewall that runs to the right of the UFO, then angles sharply towards us, stopping about 20 yards away from the left side of our exit. The areas to the right of our exit and at the nose of the Skyranger are secure territory.

The Skyranger hits the ground with a dull thud, the gate falls out with a crash, and warning lights start flashing in the Skyranger bay: we’ve got a hot landing! Our tank can make out a Floater hovering about 35 yards away, above and behind the hedgewall to the left our exit. We move our tank onto the ramp to get it out of the way. Sir Fozzie then runs to the edge of the exit, drops to a knee, and opens fire on the Floater. Plasma tracers fly towards the alien. Startled, it turns to fly away, but a plasma blast drills it in the torso, blowing a chunk of the creature away and dropping it to the ground! X-COM 1, Aliens 0.

The tank continues down the ramp and scans the area near our Skyranger: all clear. We start to move out. We can hear the thudding of house doors opening and closing in the still morning air, so there’s got to be house with aliens in it around here somewhere, but we can’t make the structure out in the gray morning light. We also hear the whirring of interior UFO doors, so we’d better get a move on and set up a firing position on that door, which faces us and is only about 40 yards away.

Chief Rum III and Wolfpack exit the Skyranger and take cover behind the tank. Once there they move, using the tank as a shield, to a position about 25 yards away from the UFO door and off at a slight angle from it. Chief Rum III and Wolfpack train their weapons on the UFO door and wait.

Meanwhile, Zippy II, Kodos, and Real Deal III head straight out from the Skyranger and into the fields beyond. They start a gradual turn left that will take them on a sweep of the area to the right of the UFO.

Coffee Warlord II and Tasan also exit the Skyranger. The come underneath the belly of the craft, turn right, and pass by Chief Rum III and Wolfpack. They’ll make a sweep of the area to the left of the UFO.

Japherwaki II exits the Skyranger, heads to the nose of the craft, and sets up the Blaster Launcher. Afoci waits in the Skyranger as a reserve. Sir Fozzie stays by the ramp to help provide long distance fire on the UFO exit if needed, but first he moves out from under the wing, preps a grenade, and tosses it at the hedgewall to the immediate right of the UFO door. This wall blocks a clean view of the door from the Skyranger, and we want to clear the way. The grenade shatters the early morning quiet and tears the hedgewall near the UFO apart. Sir Fozzie promptly slides back to safety behind the Skyranger landing gear.

Suddenly, on our right flank, a Floater comes drifting through a small grove that lies to the right of the UFO, about 30 yards away from Zippy, Real Deal, and Kodos. Zippy II is the first to react: he opens fire with his Heavy Plasma and chews the alien apart with a perfectly placed full-auto blast. The Floater drops to the ground. The men then continue their movement on the right side of the UFO. X-COM 2, Aliens 0.

X-COM forces advance through the French countryside. X-COM Archives Photo.

Back at the UFO itself, we continue to hear the whir of interior doors, but the aliens are stubbornly refusing to come out.

Coffee Warlord and Tasan continue their search on the left.

Once again, back on the right, Kodos and company pick up alien movement in the grove they are approaching. Kodos and Real Deal open fire instantly, but it is Kodos that lands the first and killing blow. We hear the Floater scream and see it drop to the grove below. X-COM 3, Aliens 0.

The next few minutes are quiet. Chief Rum III and Wolfpack maintain their vigil on the UFO door. Both groups of agents circling the UFO continue their sweeps uneventfully. It starts to look like the remaining Floaters are only in the UFO, so we bring Sir Fozzie and Afoci out of the craft and swing them behind the hedge that runs up to the right side of the UFO. From there they advance to the end of the hedge, where they set up a firing position on the UFO door. We should now be able to have four agents open fire on anything that exits the UFO.

After a bit, Real Deal, Zippy, and Kodos come upon a brick farmhouse set back behind a small grove. The three men take cover at a hedge, then call to Japherwaki II for fire support. Japh sends two missiles—one for each floor—into the house. Two explosions rock the French countryside. When the smoke clears, there is no more farmhouse! Oui! Real Deal and Zippy make a quick search of the smoking remains: nobody home.

As they are doing this, Coffee and Tasan complete the search of the area to the left and rear of the UFO. Nothing here either. The area outside the UFO is now clear: time to assault!

We’ll have Japh blow open the back end of the UFO, and then Real Deal, Zippy, Coffee, and Tasan will go in the hole. Once they’re in, we’ll have Afoci, Sir Fozzie, and Kodos go in the front door. Chief Rum III and Wolfpack will cover the UFO door while all this movement goes on. We take a few minutes and get the men ready for the assault.

Just as we get everyone in position, the UFO door pops open and a Floater steps out! Chief Rum, whose biotech breeding has given him the reflexes of cheetah, opens fire first. His one shot slams into the Floaters forehead and blows the top of its skull away. The Floater drops to the ground, dead! Wow! The door to the UFO stays open, and Wolfpack can make out a flash of purple deep inside the UFO. He takes a chance and opens fire, sending a streak of green plasma inside the craft. The plasma disappears inside, followed quickly by a muffled scream! Wolfpack got one! Hell of a shot! X-COM 5, Aliens 0.

X-COM forces bottle up Floaters inside a UFO. X-COM Archives Photo.

We immediately launch our assault. Japh launches a Blaster missile that arches over the UFO then slams into the back of the craft. The massive explosion blows a man-size hole in the outer wall. Coffee and Real Deal race around the corner of the UFO and head for the hole. As Coffee approaches it he catches sight of a Floater with its back turned, just inside the craft, moving towards the front of the UFO. He quickly drops to a knee and opens fire from 10-feet away: the plasma blasts rip open the alien’s back and drive it forward and to the ground, where it twitches violently and dies! Real Deal cuts around Coffee and is first in the hole. He enters the UFO, scans right, then left…

X-COM forces assault an enemy UFO. X-COM Archives Photo.

Nothing! Seconds later, the enemy sensors on our HUDs flash green: mission complete! That was the last alien!

Good job, men! No casualties!

Kills: Wolfpack, 1; Coffee Warlord II, 1; Zippy II, 1; Kodos, 1; Sir Fozzie, 1; Chief Rum III, 1.
KIA: None.
Wounded: None.
Attribute Improvements: Coffee Warlord II, Zippy II, Chief Rum III, Kodos, Japherwaki II, Sir Fozzie, Wolfpack.
Final score: 169
Mission Notes:
Kodos becomes the first agent to survive 20 missions! Outstanding! He also picks up his 19th kill, just two shy of the lead.

I can’t seem to buy Real Deal III a kill. No matter where I send him, he seems to have an anti-alien force field. Despite having great stats, he has only one kill in five missions.

I'm beginning to think my role in X-Com is to stand around and look good carrying a Heavy Plasma Rifle. 11 missions, 4 kills. I think I've got Jeff Knight beat in lowest kills per mission now, with more than 10 missions. Oh well, at least I'm still alive ;- )

Way to go, CRIII. And good write up, Godzilla. You know the CR "family" (we're really all the same guy, you know ) is ready to support X-Com.

Real Deal, Tasan: Next mission I'm going to do everything I can to make sure the two of you get kills.

Thanks for the comments on the screenshots/article. Credit needs to be given to others here. A guy over at Gone Gold who's doing a similar thing told me how to get the screen shots from the Collector's Edition (press F12). Klayman's current dynasty and the "Where the Iron Crosses Grow" AAR at the Hearts of Iron board inspired me to try to add more of a sense of history to this dynasty. Thanks to those people for the ideas.

Glengoyne, Klayman: Yeah, SAM COM has never launched against the enemy, so I figure we're pretty safe down there. I'd move some "inactive" people from USA COM down there, but we're already undermanned at USA COM as it is.

Superman: Great interview! I've been wondering why we always have Peanut Butter at EU COM now. CapnMorgan was such a slouch at his shopping duties. Life's good now!

Crash: You just signed up! I'll add your name to the waiting list on the next update.

________

I should be playing the next mission sometime over the next two days. I'll probably have a prepatory post (who's on the mission, etc.) up later tonight, depending on how exciting the Buffalo/Miami game is.

GO FOFC X-COM!

Update

Shortly after the EU COM Skyranger lands back at base, the ASIA COM Skyranger touches down to investigate Superman's latest kill.

The following ten men are aboard:

Rich, Jeff Nights II, Thomkal II, Danny Van Halen, Patman II, Qwikshot II, Naiwf, Fonzie II, Render II, Jeeber D

Unfortunately, a supply glitch resulted in only 7 Power Suits getting slotted onto the Skyranger. Jeff Nights II, Fonzie II, and Patman II are heading into combat with only flak jackets on, so they will likely see little action. Sorry, guys. You can blame Sterling Ice for the screwup.

Methinks GB is just trying to pass the buck here since last time he said it was Crappy's fault. Some of us have more important things to do in our small, dank subbasement then worry about ordering stuff. This sounds an awful lot like an administrative snafu.

Just trying to catch up for the first time in months and all I can say is wow. Godzilla Blitz, you have done so much with this dynasty it is amazing. From the write-ups to the screenshots, to the awards...this is fantastic! And it's great that the 'cast' is including comments here and there as well. Keep up the great work!

And also, I'd like to get my name back on the waiting list...based on how much game is left, I think I stand a fair chance of getting back into the mix

This, of course, means he's going to send both of youinto very dangerous situations where the liklihood of you dying approaches 100% But I bet you come out with kills. My Dad had 8 kills in 9 missions (he'd have had more if you counted the two X-COM agents he killed under PSI influence in that last mission). But he only had 9 missions...

I'm slow myself, and I personally prefer to have lots of other targets around when the aliens start shooting. Especially people who shoot back quickly.
