Fast Break College Basketball: Colgate
SYRACUSE GRAD OFFERED NEARBY HEAD COACHING JOB
Today, esteemed Syracuse University graduate, Marmel, was offered the Head Coaching Job at Colgate University. Colgate is a mere 50 miles from the city of Syracuse and is nestled in the hills of Upstate New York in the town of Hamilton. A truly beautiful campus, but a truly horrible basketball program. Marmel tried to walk onto the Syracuse basketball team back in the early nineties, but was cut after the first round of tryouts. A lifetime Syracuse fan, who was repeatedly turned down by Coach Boeheim for a job on the Syracuse staff, he looked elsewhere in New York for work in college hoops. Colgate is taking a chance on this young, green, 30 year old coach. This career will be run using Fast Break College Basketball. The basic settings that will be used in this career: - Attributes rated on a 1-100 scale - Teams will move up and down conferences, but conference prestige will not vary - Injuries enabled, but toned down, as they seemed a bit high on the default level. - Players can be suspended for academic reasons. - Normal Play Level gives me 240 points to distribute for myself: Recruitng 70 Scouting 40 Offense 65 Defense 65 My athletic director is expecting a 500 record this season, and our annual budget is $217,000. Our training facilities are currently at 27, which is 5th in the conference. I ran through the demo once, but this is my first real try at playing this game, so expect some beginner’s stupidity to occur. My first official duty as the Head Coach is to hire a staff. I need a recruiting co-ordinator, lead scout and assistant. Since my team prestige is in the 20’s, I know I cannot get any top flight coaches, but hopefully, I can pull one decent one to help me out. In the first round of staff hiring, I had two coaches decline, but we were able to hire our Scouting Director. He is 41 year old Henry Holsinger. His scouting rating is 39 and he makes 50K per year. In the second round, we hire nobody, and then the same results in the 3rd round. I am trying to hire some pretty below average guys, yet they still don’t want to come to Colgate. Finally, we get a Coaching Assistant to join the staff. He is Elliot Fujimoto, He is only 26 years old and is rated 25 in offense and 27 in defense. We round out the staff with Don Cole as our recruiting director. He is 36 years old and is rated as a 27 in recruiting. The next step is putting together a schedule for the 2003 season. To nobody’s surprise we were not invited to any preseason tournaments. We can schedule up to 14 OOC games, with 6 being Home Games. To start out, we schedule a home date with Binghampton, and road dates with Albany and Syracuse. All three schools accept in May, and we are also offered a Road game by Vermont, which we accept. That fills, 4 of our 14 dates. As we move into June of 2003, we add a few more games to the schedule. Hartford, Quinnipiac, and New Hampshire all agree to play this season. In addition we are offered games with Siena, Southwest Missouri State and UTEP. All those teams are much better than Colgate, but we will play them. I believe that leaves us with 4 games to fill, but as July rolls around, the Recruiting period begins!!! In July we are only able to make phone contact with potential recruits, and allow our scout to evaluate them, but we do get to see the list of all potential recruits, and even offer them scholies already! We will have 3 scholarships to fill. The recruiting interest is broken down into 5 levels of interest, with High and Very High being the best. Out of the hundreds of recruits out there, only 4 that are rated better than 1 star have high or more interest in Colgate. Two of them are 3 star recruits, which would be huge if we can land at least one of them. We put about 20 guys on our call list though, and offer those three star guys scholarships already. Mainly I will be recruiting guys with high interest from around the country, and then guys from New York who are at least rated average in interest. I spend about 75% of my monthly recruiting budget in July. In August, only Cornell accepts a game, so I still have 3 more spots to fill up. We will work on that, but first we go back to revisit come recruits. We are aggressively recruiting three guys from New York, a Center, PF and SG. The PF is 2 star and the other two guys are 3 star players. September rolls around and the students arrive on campus. What a wonderful time of year! Rhode Island, Elon and Charleston Southern round out our 2003 schedule, and at this point, we will move on to the month of November, recruiting at the start of every month. November, 2003 A couple recruits have made commitments. SF Charles Swinney from Homer, NY will be attending St. Joseph’s. PF Robert Nicholas from East Syracuse will attend Niagara. SG Han Brewton from Oriskany, NY will attend COLGATE! Hans is 6’5, 210 and scored a 1250 on his SAT’s. He is a 3 star recruit. Sure to be the prize of our recruiting class. We have some training camps and are ready to start out the season! Let’s take a look at the team this year. By the way, an awesome feature of this game is the print button. When you want to print something, it automatically cuts and pastes into Notepad for you and opens it up. SWEET! Starters in Bold. CENTERS 11 Michael Hicks C Jr 6'11" 273 Pittsgrove, NJ A good rebounded and plays pretty good post defense. He should be able to score some points down low as well and can hit the occasional free throw. He will be our starting center this season. 50 Garrett Welch C Fr 6' 9" 247 Keyser, WV A good post scorer, and a decent rebound. His defensive play relegates him to the bench, but he will be one of the first subs we bring in. 34 Sammy Hynes C Fr 6'10" 217 Malverne, NY Pathetic. He does not even show much potential. About what should be expected from a non scholarship player on Colgate. Practice Squad player strictly. POWER FORWARDS 1 Andrew Marley PF Sr 6'11" 247 Bel Air, MD About the only thing he does well is pass the ball, and as a power forward, that is not a very important skill. Andrew will only be used in blowouts. 52 Richard Nichols PF So 6'10" 254 Poughkeepsie, NY Richard has a pretty good inside shot, and can play some decent defense. He looks to be a monster shot blocker. He is our starting PF. 35 James Hale PF Fr 6' 7" 238 Walpole, MA This red shirt freshman shows a bit of potential, but won’t see the court for a few seasons at best. SMALL FORWARDS 32 Victor Owen SF Sr 6' 9" 232 Auburn, ME Vic handles the ball well, and can hit the 3 pointer. He can play a little defense on the perimiter. I wish we had somebody a bit better, but he looks to be our starter. 40 Rusty Delapaz SF So 6' 6" 223 Uxbridge, MA Rusty really doesn’t have many strengths, but could develop over the next few seasons. 20 Tony Brown SF Fr 6' 7" 239 Fairport, NY Similar to Rusty, the potential to contribute is there, but he is a long ways away. SHOOTING GUARDS 10 John Reuter SG Sr 6' 4" 230 Horseheads, NY If we needed a designated free throw shooter, John would be the one. Too bad we don’t. 2 Warren Pond SG Fr 6' 5" 226 New York, NY Warren doesn’t do anything real well, except for steals. Still, he starts by default. 51 Dennis Aultman SG Fr 6' 8" 220 New York, NY He will compete for worst player on the team this year. POINT GUARDS 4 Jeramy Perez PG Fr 6' 2" 188 Willimantic, CT ‘J’ has a great J and is a very good ball distributor. It appears he might be the focus of our team. Early signs say he is the best player we have. 14 Joseph Tiller PG Fr 6' 3" 204 Corbin, KY Another guy with a good shot, but nothing else. His defense is so bad, he becomes a liability on the court. 5 Sydney Greenwood PG Fr 6' 2" 201 Allentown, PA Another typical Colgate player. Nothing to brag about, but he should see some decent minutes. We will be running a man to man defense. We will press and trap rarely, and we will double team to some extent, hopefully covering up our defensive weaknesses.

Colgate 71 (at) Charleston Southern 62 We get off to a good start this season. Jeramy Perez is as good as I thought he might be. He was named player of the game for scoring a game high 22 points on 9 for 14 shooting. He also led the team with 5 rebounds (not a good sign when your PG leads the team) and had 2 assists.
November 18, 2003 (at) Colgate 51, Binghampton 49 We pull this game out by 2 points on our home court. POTG was Center Mike Hicks. He only scored 6 points, but pulled down 10 boards. Sydney Greenwood came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 12.

(at) Colgate 76, New Hampshire 57 Colgate moves to 3-0 on the season! Sydney Greenwood has another nice game off the bench to earn POTG honors. He scored 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting. PF Rich Nichols led the team with 15 points.
November 28, 2003 (at) Colgate 57, Quinnipiac 49 We move to 4-0 on the season. A bit of a surprise to be honest, but the competition is pretty bad. PF Rich Nichols was game MVP with 11 points and 5 rebounds. SG Warren Pond also added in 11 points.
CAN I JUST EMPHASIZE HOW COMPLETELY AWESOME THE PRINT FUNCTION IN THIS GAME IS!!!!!!! End of the month review. Well, it doesn’t get any better than a 4-0 record to close out the first month of the season! PF Charles Westerfield declined our scholarship offer and has declared he will attend Monmouth. Top 25:

Colgate 59 (at) Hartford 56 We move to 5-0. PG J Perez is the POTG. He scored a game high 19 points. Center Mike Hicks had a fine game, with 8 boards and 7 points.
December 8, 2003 Siena 70 (at) Colgate 54 Well, we play our first somewhat legit team and get it handed to us. Perez had a fine game with 16 points and Greenwood scored 11, but that came at a cost of a combined 11 for 25 shooting by the pair. Nichols grabbed 9 boards.
December 11, 2003 UTEP 79 (at) Colgate 62 UTEP was 0-4 coming into this game, but really took it to us as we fall to 5-2 on the year. None of our started were able to score in double figures. Greenwood continues to play very good off the bench with 10 points in 20 minutes of play. He was only 2 for 10 from the floor but was effective at the line. I may have to consider trying him out at starting SG, although his natural position is PG.
December 15, 2003 (at) Rhode Island 67, Colgate 66 We almost pull of a great upset on the road, but fall by a point and are now 5-3 on the year. Perez had 14 points to lead the team and Greenwood again put up 11. He has earned a starting spot on this team now.
December 19, 2003 (at) Vermont 69, Colgate 48 Oh how our fortunes change so quickly. We fall to 5-4 on the year. Greenwood and PF Nichols tie for the team lead in points with 10. I think I am happy with Greenwood in the starting roll for now. The pressure of having to step out has not affected him it seems. We lose Rusty Delapaz for 8 days due to a wrist injury, but he was not a big part of the team anyway.

Southwest Missouri State 75 (at) Colgate 69 Merry Christmas guys. A valiant effort, but we fall short again. Greenwood scores 11 to lead the starters and in what appears to be a bug, Delapaz plays 19 minutes despite being listed as out and scores a career high 14 points to lead the team. Time to go over to HeavyReign’s boards and let him know.
December 28, 2003 Colgate 67 (at) Cornell 52 We move to 6-5 on the season with a nice win on the road. Warren Pond, relegated to the nech after the emergence of Greenwood earned game MVP honors with 10 points on 4 for 4 shooting. The injured (but not 89%) Rusty Delapaz led the team with 14 points. Where was Rusty when he was healthy?
December Recap: We finish out 2003 with a 605 record. Not bad really. C David Rust from Rochester has declined our scholly and committed to Syracuse. Guess we were reaching there, huh? PG Jack Hatch from Collinsville, CT has committed to play for us! Jack is a 2 star recruit who has a very sweet jump shot and will either back up Perez or play SG. Top 25:

Before we get into our January Schedule, here are the results of some more Pre-Season Tournaments:
Great Alaska Shootout: Maryland over Arizona 75-66 PreSeason FBIT: UCLA over Kentucky 85-59 Maui Invitational: Hawaii over Texas, 65-60. That must have been one heck of a game in front of the Hawaii crowd! Top of the World: Michigan State over Cincinnati 85-76 Rainbow Invitational: Stanford over Ohio State 93-75 Las Vegas Invitational: St. Johns over Arkansas 74-48 San Juan Classic: North Carolina over Georgia 68-58 January 3, 2004 (at) #8 Syracuse 81, Colgate 53 Crushed. Greenwood was our only player to score in double figures with 11. SF Vic Own led the team with 8 boards. Now that Delapaz is healthy, he puts up 4 points.
January 9, 2004 (at) Albany 75, Colgate 69 This one really hurt. This is a game we should have won, but instead we fall to 6-7 on the year. Delapaz led the team with 10 points. Everybody else played pretty poor. Perez has not been the star I was hoping for since game 1 of the season.
I take a look at the playing times, and the computer recommended some odd settings. I mess with these (hoping the higher the number means the more playing time) and hope to see some improvement, as most of my starters were on a short leash, but with the lack of backup talent, they should be playing more, I think. We start Conference Play next!

Colgate 66, (at) Bucknell 51 We start out Conference play with a road win. Cannot ask for more than that. I get a much better distribution of minutes this time and it pays off. Perez comes back finally with a 26 point performance and was named MVP. Hey, I told you I was learning on the fly. J
January 17, 2004 (at) Colgate 60, Holy Cross 44 We dominate The Cross to move to 8-7 on the year and 2-0 in Conf. Play. C Mike Hicks is named MVP with 9 boards and 8 points on the day. PF Nichols scores 10 to lead the team.
January 21, 2004 American 65, (at) Colgate 56 A setback here at home as we fall to 8-8 on the year. And 2-1 in Conf. Nichols and Perez both scored in double figures for us. 2 for 10 from 3 point range really hurt us.
January 24, 2004 Colgate 65, (at) Holy Cross 49 We sweep both games against Holy Cross this year. Nichols, Owen and Brown each scored 13 for your Red Raiders. Owen was named game MVP.
January 28, 2004 (at) Lehigh 70, Colgate 61 Our starters were bad. Only double digit scorers came off the bench today. I guess I should get used to performances like this at Colgate.
January 31, 2004 (at) Colgate 77, Lafayette 70 They were one of the worst teams in our conference, so it was a must win. Perez has another great game with 22 points, and we are just asking for more consistency from him. C Mike Hicks had 10 boards!

(at) Colgate 70, Bucknell 59 Bucknell had only 4 wins on the year, so this was a gimme. Perez continues to impress lately, today he was MVP and scored 24 points!
February 7, 2004 (at) Lafayette 57, Colgate 56 This was a bad loss, even though it was on the road. They are clearly a worse team than us. Bad loss.
February 11, 2004 (at) Colgate 56, Lehigh 55 We come back and pull out a close one. Nice recovery! Rich Nichols had a nice night with 12 points, but C Mike Hicks was a monster on the boards. He pulled down 19!!!
February 14, 2004 Colgate 51 (at) Navy 48 We take this one on the road to keep pace for first place in the Patriot League. Vic Owen was MVP of the game with 7 boards and 9 points. Perez and Pond both scored 10.
At this point, we are 7-3 in Conference play, but 4 other teams have 6 wins at this point, so the race is still wide open.

(at) Elon 87, Colgate 58 We step out of conference for a chance to get our ass handed to us. Greenwood has a career game with 20 points, but we were just dominated on the boards, among many other categories.
February 21, 2004 Army 80 (at) Colgate 62 This was a real bad loss here. Army is one of the teams competing for the Conference Title and they blow us out on our home court. Perez led the way with 19 points, but it was not nearly enough.
February 25, 2004 Colgate 74 (at) American 58 Great to see my kids able to come back after a tough loss and dominate a pretty good conference team. Perez goes for 16, while Nichols earns MVP honors with 19 points and 7 boards.
February 28, 2004 Navy 62, (at) Colgate 51 This is just embarrassing. It also probably dashes our hopes of finishing first in the conference this year. Does anybody know if the Patriot league plays a conference tourney? I want to say they do not….
End of February Recap: We get our third and final recruit of this year! PG Thomas Hogan from Vienna Missouri commits to Colgate. He is a 2 star player, and while we didn’t need another PG, we really struggled to give out this last scholarship. We are 14-13 at the end of February and 2 full games out of first place in Conference play, and we have only 2 more games to play
Top 25:
Southern Methodist is a top 10 team? Other than that nothing really strikes me as strange.

(at) Army 62, Colgate 61 We really don’t need this late season fade, and now we probably will not even be able to get a 4 seed in the conference tourney.
That concludes the Regular Season. We are seeded #5 in the Conference Tournament. March 6, 2004 Patriot League Tournament, Round 1 American 62, Colgate 32 This game will leave a sour taste in our collective mouths for the long off season. We were beaten in every aspect of the game. Totally embarrassing. Nothing else to say.
Lafayette beats Lehigh to win the Patriot League Conference Championship and earn a trip to the Big Dance! Final Patriot League Standings:

The Big Dance
The Big News out of the First Round is Patriot League Champion, and #16 seeded Lafayette knocking off #1 seed Syracuse in the first round! Shocker! Unheard of! Lafayette goes on to beat #8 seeded Texas Tech and advance to the Sweet 16. #16 Binghampton also knocks off a #1 seed, Arkansas. Time to repost this to the FBCB boards. Once every few decades I can see it. Twice in the first season? No way. Lafayette’s Dream Season finally comes to an end at the hands of Wake Forest in the Sweet Sixteen. Your Final Four teams: #3 Stanford #3 Duke #1 Texas #3 Kentucky The Stanford Cardinal wins the 2003 National Title by crushing Kentucky 92-65 on Monday night. Illinois wins the NIT title. Since the demo ends at the end of the NCAA Tournament, this is new ground for me. I get a message saying I had the 128th Recruiting Class in the Nation. Oklahoma had the top class. Henry Holsinger left to take a coaching position with Georgia Tech, so we must find a new Lead Scout. We hire Damion Almeida, who left Pepperdine (don not say why but he was unemployed). Pepperdine made the NIT last year. Damion is rated 34 in scouting. Next, we head into the scheduling phase. We have 13 openings, 6 of which can be home dates. As June rolls around, we have 4 games scheduled, with VMI, Albany, Elon and Long Island. Really building up that strength of schedule. As July arrives we have added games with BU, Brown, Syracuse and St. Peter’s and Fairfield. Recruiting also begins in July, but we only have 1 scholarship to fill. In August, we schedule Idaho and Farleigh Dickenson. That leaves 2 games left to schedule. We schedule Jackson State and Villanova to round out our OOC schedule for the 2004-2005 season. November finally rolls around and we get bad news. The one recruit we were after hard, PF Jose Worthington from Verona, NY has committed to Xavier. November also is time for training camps. I let the computer recommend the best setup for me. As the season is about to start up, it is time to review our roster CENTERS 11 Michael Hicks C Sr 6'11" 273 Pittsgrove, NJ Mike was 2nd Team All Conference Last year and was named POTG twice. He average 5.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg last year and will remain the starter for us. 50 Garrett Welch C So 6'10" 252 Keyser, WV Garrett was on the Conference Freshman team last year and will see more PT this year in order to groom him for the starting spot next season. 34 Sammy Hynes C So 6'10" 229 Malverne, NY He scored 4 points in a game last year. POWER FORWARDS 52 Richard Nichols PF Jr 6'10" 259 Poughkeepsie, NY Rich averaged 8 ppg last year and will keep his starting spot. 35 James Hale PF So 6' 7" 238 Walpole, MA He can pull down some boards, but doesn’t do much else. SMALL FORWARDS 40 Rusty Delapaz SF Jr 6' 6" 227 Uxbridge, MA He is a better scorer from the inside which does not help us at the SF spot. 20 Tony Brown SF So 6' 7" 241 Fairport, NY The potential is there, but he is coming along very slowly. SHOOTING GUARDS 2 Warren Pond SG So 6' 5" 227 New York, NY Warren started the season last year, but was demoted to the bench. He will stay there, but be one of the first guys off the bench. A pretty decent utility player. 51 Dennis Aultman SG So 6' 8" 224 New York, NY This non-scholarship player is a practice squad player. Hans Brewton SG Fr 6' 5" 213 Oriskany, NY Hans is our prized recruit and will start at the SF spot due to his 6’5 height and excellent skills already, with some room to grow as well. POINT GUARDS Jeramy Perez PG So 6' 2" 196 Willimantic, CT Jeramy is being moved to the starting shooting guard spot this season. He is an excellent shooter, maybe our best, and with our depth at PG, we will use somebody else there. We need Perez to play well in order to win. 14 Joseph Tiller PG So 6' 3" 206 Corbin, KY Joe has one of the best shots on our team, but he is so bad everywhere else, I cannot give him a lot of PT. 5 Sydney Greenwood PG So 6' 2" 202 Allentown, PA Greenwood is demoted back to the bench, and somewhat deep on it. He is in a tough situation as we have some quality at the PG spot. Thomas Hogan PG Fr 6' 1" 181 Vienna, MO Tommy is another freshman, and I struggled with the decision, but finally decided to start the season with him as the starter. His nice passing rating and shooting rating gave him the nod. 24 Jack Hatch PG Fr 6' 3" 185 Collinsville, CT Jack is a fine player and may end up starting by the end of the season. He plays terrific defense and is a good shot. He will be the first guy of the bench normally. We are going to end up with a solid 10 man rotation, but we do have a lack of depth at C, PF and SF. We will play small a lot. We will run a man to man defense.

(at) Colgate 71, VMI 54 Always nice to start out the season with a W. The Frosh, Hans Brewton is named the POTG. He scored 18 points and had 5 boards in his collegiate debut. C Mike Hicks scored 13 and grabbed 12 boards for a double double. Very happy with everybody’s performance today.
November 18, 2004 Albany 60, (at) Colgate 59 Albany clips us at home. A tough loss to stomach, but we have to learn and move on. Perez was our only guy in double figures, with 12 points.
November 23, 2004 (at) Elon 56, Colgate 55 Another heartbreaker. We fall to 1-2 on the year. Elon really smoked us last year, so we are getting better. Right? Perez led the way with 14 points for us. Nichols chipped in with 10.
Novermber 28, 2004 (at) Long Island 67, Colgate 61 OK, this is not the start I had envisioned. We are now 1-3 and these are not very good teams we are playing. Perez again led the way with 15 points. Hans had a dozen points for us and Hicks had 10 and 5 boards.
November Recap. Another played declined our scholarship. PF Jake Stark, from Camillus, NY has committed to Hampton. We are 1-3 after the first month of play. We are going to need to pick it up, and quickly. Top 25:

Boston University 58 (at) Colgate 56 Another nail biter, and another loss for the Red Raiders. We need to break though and pull out one of these close ones. Not a single player scored in double figures for us. Our PG, Tom Hogan led the team with 7 rebounds. That cannot happen.
December 5, 2004 (at) Colgate 72, Brown 46 We finally get back on track by blowing out a clearly inferior team. Rich Nichols led the team with 11 points and was named POTG. The two freshman, Hans Brewton and Tom Hogan both scored 10 points.
December 9, 2004 (at) #8 Syracuse 77, Colgate 59 We knew we could not win this one, but we kept it respectable. Rich Nichols had his way with the Syracuse inside players and scored 17 points. Hicks pulled down 9 boards, but only got 2 points.
December 14, 2004 (at) Colgate 61, St. Peter’s 43 A very nice win at home against a respectable team. This brings us to 3-5 on the season. Hans Brewton led the way with 13 points and had 8 boards. He was named POTG. Hicks had 13 boards. Perez and Hatch also scored in double figures.

Colgate 65 (at) Idaho 56 We are headed in the right direction now. We move up to 4-5 on the season. Nichols and Brewton led the team with 10 points each. Hicks had 7 points and 7 boards.
December 23, 2004 Colgate 83 (at) Jackson State 46 Dominating. That is not a word that goes hand in hand with Colgate, but on this day, we were. We had 3 players scoring in double figures, led by POTG, Rich Nichols. He scored 17 and had 8 boards. Hogan scored 12 and had 6 assists.
December 29, 2004 (at) Colgate 87, Fairfield 64 Colgate now has a winning record, at 7-6 on the season. My kids are starting to gel together as a team and are really winning by large margins lately. Let’s hope we can keep this up when we move into conference play. Five Raiders scored in double figures, led by Brewton, Perez and Hogan with 13 each. I have 2 more season with those three guys, how exciting might the future be?
December Recap We fill our scholarship! PF George Jackson from Bemidji, MN commits to Colgate. He is only a 2 star prospect, and to be honest, I am not that excited about him. He fills a roll though. Here are the Patriot League teams at the end of December 2004.

(at) Villanova 88, Colgate 50 We were never in the game against a Big East school and fall back to 500 on the year at 6-6. Hatch, Brewton and Perez all scored in double figures, but they got no other help. Their SF went off for 25 points on us as well.
January 6, 2005 (at) Fairleigh Dickenson 51, Colgate 39 Now we fall below 500 on the year with a dismal offensive performance. Nobody on the team was able to score more than 6 points on the day. We shot 17 for 47 from the field on the day.
That brings an end to our OOC schedule (besides a game late in the season). We are 6-7 heading into Patriot League Games. Here is how our league stacked up OOC.

Navy 66, (at) Colgate 52 We start out by getting demolished at home, to a team that finished near the bottom of the pack last year. Not a good start. Perez had a nice game with 16 points, but nobody was able to step up and help him out.
January 19, 2005 Colgate 73, (at) Holy Cross 60 Holy Cross is one of the few teams that we can say we own. We have beat them 3 times now. PG Tom Hogan led our starters with 10 points, but it was Warren Pond, who came off the bench and poured in 17 points in 16 minutes of play to earn POTG honors.
January 22, 2005 (at) Colgate 75, Lafayette 63 We get back to 500 on the season at 8-8, and move to 2-1 in conference play. Tom Hogan led the team with 16 points and added 5 boards and 3 assists for POTG honors. Hans Brewton chipped in 10 points. Mike Hicks had 8 boards and 8 points in a very solid effort.
January 26, 2005 Colgate 79, (at) Navy 68 We get some revenge on Navy who beat us good on our home court earlier in the month. Three Raiders scored in double figures: Nichols, Brewton and Perez, but it was C Mike Hicks who was named POTG for his 8 point, 7 rebound performance. He has been so consistent for us this year down in the post.
January 29, 2005 Colgate 61, (at) Lafayette 59 We complete the season sweep of Lafayette, and move to 10-8 on the year and more importantly, 4-1 in conference play. Mike Hicks continues to be so dependable. He had 7 boards and 8 points today. Perez led the team with 11 points.
January Recap: First a quick note about the game. I have the option turned on where teams will move to and from conferences based on performance. Sort of like the European Soccer Promotion system. This might prove to be a fun option in the game, except I noticed some teams moved around last year and I did not get any email messages about it, so it is not so easy to follow. Colgate 75, (at) American 67 By taking down the previously undefeated American team (in conference play) we are in a very nice position to challenge for the top spot now. Perez led the team with 14 points, but Brewton and Nichols came up big with 13 points each. If our Center, Mike Hicks does not get some post-season award recognition, he will be robbed. He grabbed 10 boards and scored 9 points.
February 5, 2005 Colgate 62, (at) Army 54 The Red Raiders are really on a roll now, winning 6 in a row. Nichols led the way for us with 16 points and was named POTG. Greenwood had a great game off the bench with 14. Hicks had 9 and 8.
February 9, 2005 (at) Colgate 78, Holy Cross 68 We own Holy Cross. 4-0 against them in 2 seasons. 7-1 in conference and we are playing great ball right now. Nichols scored 16 to earn POTG honor for the second straight game. Hogan had 13 and Perez chipped in 11.
February 12, 2005 Colgate 88, (at) Bucknell 58 The Red Raiders keep on rolling! A blow out victory on the road. Perez had a career game today, scoring 29 points!

February 19, 2005 (at) Colgate 54, American 47 This team seems unstoppable right now! It must be the coaching. Perez scored 13 and Nichols had 12 while Hicks pulled down 12 boards.
February 23, 2005 (at) Colgate 63, Bucknell 50 We bring our A game today, and again come away with a victory. We are now starting think about qualifying for the Big Dance at the end of the season. We had three players score in double figures, with Perez leading the way with 16.
February 26, 2005 Army 69, (at) Colgate 50 Finally the win streak comes to and end, after 11 straight wins, we finally go down. We still have a 2 game lead in the conference, even after the loss.
Febraury 28, 2005 (at) Colgate 65, Hartford 53 We bounce right back after the loss to Army and take care of business against Hartford. Grewton led the team with 13 points, but Tom Hogan was POTG with 11 points, 6 boards and 6 assists. Rusty Delapaz took a bad fall and fractured his skull. It is not likely he will play again this season.
February Recap With just 1 regular season game to play, we have wrapped up the #1 seed in the Patriot League tournament, for an automatic bid to the NCAA.

Post-Season
Holy Cross must play in the Play-In game in the tournament. They are one of the worst teams to ever make the dance, with an overall record of 13-20. They get beaten up by Charleston Southern, and the Patriot league will not even be represented in the field of 64 after last year’s Cinderella story. March 17, 2005 Colgate 57, Depaul 41 We take care of business to show that we are for real and not just beating up on Patriot teams all year long. Depaul may not be from a major conference, but they are more prestigious than we are. Hogan led the team with 12 points, but backup PG, Jack Hatch was named POTG for chipping in 7 points in just 12 minutes.
Our next game is against the #8 seed, Ohio U. March 18, 2005 Ohio 63, Colgate 58 Our season comes to an end here, but it was a great year, and a vast improvement. We were even able to win a post season game. Our best players will return next season, so the future is looking good.
For those that are curious, the following higher seeds lost in the first round of the NCAA: Two 2s Two 5s Two 6s One 7 One 8 Coupled with last year’s two number 1 seeds losing in the first round, the two number 2’s dropping this year, concerns me a bit, but this is more buyable than last year’s scenario. Heavyreign said he would have to tweak this, so I feel good about a patch addressing this issue. NCAA Final Four: #1 Texas #2 Cincinnati #3 Indiana #1 Syracuse So, although there are some problems with extreme upsets early on, the Final Four has been quite realistic both seasons. Cincinnati beats Syracuse, 105-99 for the National Championship! Wright State won the NIT tournament.

He was also named to the Patriot League Freshman team. Finally, it was announced Hans was named Patriot League Freshman of the Year! 2005-2006 Season, Preseason Procedures
Lots of excitement around Colgate. We have moved to a more prestigious conference. We are now a part of the IVY LEAGUE! The dean has also approved an upgrade to our training facilities! Our recruiting class was the #248th ranked, but we only had 1 recruit. Florida had the top class. Our team prestige has moved up to 31 after last season. The AD is just delighted with my performance, and we have more money to spend on coaches and recruiting this year. About 50 K more. Head Coaching Round: James Madison University, another Ivy League team has offered me their Head Coaching position, but I politely decline. In round 2, Brown (Ivy) and Loyola Chicago (Southern) offer me jobs, I also decline. In round 3, Portland (West Coast) and Tennessee Martin (Ohio Valley) offer me. I refuse. Round 4, Arkansas Little Rock, BU, Fairfield and Montana State are all turned down. Montana has a 47 prestige, so that would be a nice jump up. Round 5, Alabama State and Idaho State are turned down. Assistant Coach Rounds: We fire our recruiting Coach and want to really improve in that area. We hire Albert Russell for our now vacant head recruiter. He is rated as a 45 and is 45 years old. He previously coached Long Beach (which he quit to persue a high position) and he was recently fired from UNLV. Scheduling We have 10 games to fill, up to 7 can be home dates. As June rolls around, we have scheduled games with Binghampton, East Carolina, Buffalo and a grudge match game against American. As July hits, we have added games with Liberty, Texas Southern, Seton Hall, Savannah State, Youngston State and Vermont. That completes our OOC schedule. The Recruiting pool is also released in July and we have 2 spots to fill. We will look to the post positions. November finally arrives and training camps will open soon. We get some bad news, as a recruit from Australia that we recruited heavily has decided to attend Southern Illinois.

POWER FORWARDS 52 Richard Nichols PF Sr 6'10" 262 Poughkeepsie, NY Rich was 2nd team All-Conference last year and will be moved to the starting Center position this year. 35 James Hale PF Jr 6' 7" 239 Walpole, MA James is an OK player, and we need some depth down low, so he will get some playing time for us. His strengths are rebounding and defense. 33 George Jackson PF Fr 6'11" 232 Bemidji, MN George is our only freshman scholarship player and won’t see much court time this year, but could develop some useful skills for us. SMALL FORWARDS 40 Rusty Delapaz SF Sr 6' 6" 228 Uxbridge, MA Rusty is going to get the start at PF, as we will play small, very small, this year. We know Rusty can do a little scoring, but we are concerned about his rebounding down there. I think he could hold his own on defense, but he will not dominate. 20 Tony Brown SF Jr 6' 8" 242 Fairport, NY Tony will see a bit of playing time. He excels at defense and rebounding. SHOOTING GUARDS 2 Warren Pond SG Jr 6' 5" 229 New York, NY Warren should be the first guy off the bench, and is our utility guy. He can do a little bit of everything, but he doesn’t do anything particularly well. 51 Dennis Aultman SG Jr 6' 8" 224 New York, NY Dennis is a defensive specialst, but does not do anything else to earn much PT. 0 Hans Brewton SG So 6' 5" 217 Oriskany, NY Hans can score inside, and outside. He can pass the ball, pull down a few boards, and cover his man well. Remains our starting SF, and should remain there for the rest of his collegiate career. POINT GUARDS 4 Jeramy Perez PG Jr 6' 2" 199 Willimantic, CT Jeramy’s shot has developed so well, we expect double digit scoring each and every game this year. Like always, he is our star and we will live and die with my boy. He will start the SG position. 14 Joseph Tiller PG Jr 6' 3" 208 Corbin, KY Joe might have a better shot than Jeramy, but that is all he really has. We will give him some PT this year, but not a real lot. 5 Sydney Greenwood PG Jr 6' 2" 206 Allentown, PA Sydney is a fine shooter, but his man will continuously burn him when he is on the floor. 53 Thomas Hogan PG So 6' 1" 183 Vienna, MO Tom was our Starting PG last year, but is demoted to our 6th man this year. Is is not that he regressed, but he defense lacks and Jack Hatch really made some nice strides in the off season. 24 Jack Hatch PG So 6' 3" 186 Collinsville, CT Jack takes over the starting PG position. His strides in playing D promoted him to the starting position this year.

(at) Colgate 72, American 65 We get a measure of revenge over American with a 7 point victory to open up the new season. I screwed up and forgot to set up the depth chart before this game, but we got by. Whoops!
November 18, 2005 (at) Colgate 66, Buffalo 56 A nice win over an in-state rival. Perez and Brewton lead the way with 16 and 12 points respectively. We are going to hear a lot of that this season. Hans was named POTG.
November 23, 2005 Colgate 60, (at) East Carolina 53 A nice statement game for Colgate. We are letting everybody know we can play with some of the more prestigious teams, even on their own court. Rusty Delapaz led the way with 10 points, but Tony Brown was POTG with 9 points in 12 minutes off the bench.
November 29, 2005 (at) Colgate 57, Binghampton 48 Another win against a local rival. Perez leads the way with 11 points. Nichols had a great day with 13 boards and 9 points and was POTG.
November Recap We are undefeated so far, but we have been playing warm up games for the most part. C James Hutchens from Washingtonville, NY has committed to Seton Hall. Ivy League Standings:

(at) Seton Hall, 67, Colgate 42 The Hall beats us in recruiting and then again on the court, badly. Nobody even scored in double figures and we were outclassed all over the court.
Warren Pond ruptured a disc in his back and will miss 3-4 months. December 10, 2005 Texas Southern 69, (at) Colgate 67 We get nipped in the last minute by TSU. Perez and Hatch had fine games, and Welch contributed off the bench, but turnover killed us in this one.
December 12, 2005 Savannah State 68, (at) Colgate 58 We are reeling a bit, and that includes home games. Savannah State is now 7-2 on the season, so they are a bit of a surprise team. We drop to 4-3. Perez had 16 points to lead the way and Delapaz and Hatch each score din double figures. Another 20 turnovers hurts.
December 14, 2005 (at) Vermont 51, Colgate 48 We drop a close one on the road. We could have used this win, but it was not to be. We drop to 500 on the year with a 4-4 record. Rich Nichols had a great game with 12 boards and 12 points, but got no help from his teammates.

Liberty 55, (at) Colgate 52 This was a real bad loss, as Liberty was 0-8 coming into this game. They beat us on our own court and drop us to 4-5. Brewton led the way for us with 15 points.
December 24, 2005 Youngston State 57, (at) Colgate 48 It is not going to be a fun Christmas for my kids. Perez is the only guy to score in double figures and he only had 10.
Time to play with time allocation and strategies. December 28, 2005 #7 Syracuse 74, (at) Colgate 55 We get the Orangemen at home, and don’t even make a game of it. Perez can play with anybody, as he scored 15, but the rest of the team is in a major slump.
December 30, 2005 Colgate 53, (at) Albany 51 We finally get a win, and I send off the kids to really party it up on New Year’s as they need a break and deserve to celebrate now.

Cornell 69, (at) Colgate 46 Our first Ivy League game is a blow out, and on our home court. This does not bode real well for this season. Perez scored 12, but had absolutely no help at all.
January 16, 2005 Elon 71, (at) Colgate 43 Another blowout at home. I have no idea what is wrong with these kids. Hogan scored 11 off the bench to provide a spark, but our starters were walking zombies out there.

(at) Colgate 59, Yale 47 I move Hogan back into the starting PG spot and demote Hatch to 6th and we get a win. Hans Brewton finally has a good game, scoring 15.
January 25, 2005 (at) Colgate 72, Long Island 61 We move to 2-1 in conference play with this win, and we seem to be rebounding this season with Hogan running the point. Perez led the team with 13 along with Hatch, who contributed nicely as the 6th man now. He also had 13. Delapaz chipped in with a dozen.
January 27, 2005 Colgate 54, (at) Brown 52 We steal one on the road, from one of the better teams in the Ivy. Brewton was the only player to score in double figures; he had 10.
January Recap: We fill our 2 scholarships this past month with the following players: SG Emmett Williamson from Weston, CT commits to Colgate. Emmitt is a 3 star recruit, and is rated the #8 SG in the East. He projects to be a lights out shooter, especially from 3 point land. C Carl Jones from New Castle, Delaware commits to Colgate. Carl is also a 3 star recruit. He is the 10th ranked Center in the East Region. He does not project to be a great scorer, but should be just an absolute monster on the boards. I am pretty happy with these guys. Both are 3 star recruits, which is good for a program of our prestige. I was hoping to get a C and PF, but it was not to be. Ivy League Standings:

Brown 65, (at) Colgate 57 Once again we are struggling to remain competitive in league play. Nichols had a big game, pouring in 18 points, and Brewton chipped in with a dozen.
February 4, 2006 (at) Colgate 46, Wagner 40 We play on back to back nights and come back with an ugly win over Wagner. Tony Brown was our leading scorer, and came off the bench with 9 points. Nichols pulled down 9 boards on the day.
February 10, 2006 Colgate 63, (at) Cornell 53 We avenge an earlier season beating by Cornell and take them down on their home court. Hans Brewton had a big day with 17 points and Tom Hogan also had a 16 point game along with 5 boards.
February 11, 2006 (at) Colgate 69, Penn 68 We nip one of the historically great Ivy League teams by just 1 points, but it keeps us in the hunt for a league title. Nichols was a monster today, dominating Penn on the inside with 10 boards and 19 points. Brewton added a dozen along with 5 boards.

Maybe you could post some stats after every couple months, and definitely after the end of the season?
Plus, maybe let us know when you think you're getting close to landing a recruit, and when they do sign, maybe some details (stats and basic ratings). Great job! ~kyle

James Madison 68, (at) Colgate 67 A real heartbreaker, and now we are going to have to go on a real tear to have a shot at first place. Perez was our leading scorer with a dozen, and Nichols had a nice game with 8 boards and 9 points.
February 17, 2006 Colgate 71, (at) Penn 68 We beat the Quakers in both meetings this year. Hopefully this starts a nice streak for us. Hogan was the man today, pouring in 17 points. Delapaz had a good game with 13 and Hatch came off the bench to chip in with 11.
Bad news comes out of this game though. Hans Brewton broke his hip and will miss about 6 weeks of play. We have to really juggle the lineup. February 18, 2006 (at) Dartmouth 67, Colgate 56 With the injury, we are going to struggle for the rest of the season. I am not holding out much hope right now. Perez tried to keep us in the game with 16 and Delapaz had another good game with 10 points.
February 24, 2006 (at) Colgate 69, Dartmouth 58 We come right back with another game against Dartmouth and beat them by 11. A very nice win. We had 4 players score in double figures, led by Rusty Delapaz with 15.
February 25, 2006 (at) Wagner 57, Colgate 53 We are really struggling to get a win on the road this year. Perez was our only scorer with double figures. He had 11.
February Recap: Somehow, we have a shot at first place. Nobody is able to pull away this year and we are just 1.5 games back, but there are only 2 to play.
