Best. Pro. Team. Ever. (an all-time pro football tournament)
I've decided to undertake a project using the Quick Play Football game I used for the 2002 college tournament and my college football history replay (which I'll get back to at some point). This will be a fairly massive low-intensity project (meaning, it will go and stop at my discretion and I'll not kill myself trying to get this done by a certain point in time). The Quick Play game comes with the ratings of every pro team (minus WFL and XFL) since 1937. Since I've developed a bulk game-playing utility, I can undertake an exhaustive tournament involving every one of these teams. It will also give me something to fiddle with during down times at work.
There are 1,492 teams: NFL teams from 1937-42 and 1946-2003, AAFC teams from 1946-49, AFL teams from 1960-1969, and USFL teams from 1983-1985. Each team as in the college game is rated for offense, defense, and close game ability. There is a normalization grade that tries to even out the various eras that will be used like the strength of schedule rating was used in the college game. More recent years have higher normalizations than earlier ones in the NFL. Of the other leagues, only the AFL and AAFC have normalizations comparable to the NFL in the same time period and that's more at the end of their existences as they merged with the NFL. The USFL teams have very low normalization scores so they're probably going to get killed in the opening round. There are no seeds and all matchups will be random with two exceptions: no NFL or Super Bowl champion may play another such champion unless it is unavoidable (i.e. more than half the field left are champs), and no team may play a team from the same franchise history unless it is unavoidable (e.g. Tennesee Titans not allowed to play Houston Oilers, but do note that the Ravens can play the Browns since they are technically not the same franchise in the NFL history books). Each round will be best-of-three, a home-and-home, and, if necessary, a neutral site game for the decider. A first round will be conducted to reduce this field to an evenly bracketed 1,024 teams. In the first round, the only teams that are exempt from being selected for play are the NFL or Super Bowl champions from 1937 to now. In addition, all AFL teams (except the 68 Jets and 69 Chiefs since they are Super Bowl winners), all AAFC teams, and all USFL teams are automatically playing a first round series. I'll post the opening round matchups. At least until I reach the round of 64, I will probably just summarize round results in the form of "X beats Y 2-0" or "X beats Y 2-0". I may provide detailed quarter-by-quarter results for series that go to a third game. (It should be noted that I won't play any of these games in a drive-by-drive fashion since that would lengthen the project a lot) If anyone wants to, I can also post the more detailed information for any teams they want. Right then. On with it, shall we? |

Yeah, should pass the time nicely. I've already played through the games above, but have come to realize that I need to program the Close Game results into my app because it'll be a PITA to do so many close games by hand. Oh, well, something for the next round.
Several series of what I've seen (I haven't looked through all the results yet...it is 936 games after all) have been sweeps, a few have split the games which means a third neutral-site game is needed to settle things, and several others have either one or both scores too close to call to give out a final result, including many of the Cowboys teams. 1997 Cowboys have advanced, while the 1962 team was swept out. Most of the other ones are in close games in both games of the series or at least are up one but close in the other. Like I said, I haven't looked through all the rest to know the who will make the Final One Thousand, Twenty-Four. |

To all:
I'm going to re-run these first round games again. I've been able to program in the Close Game chart. I will also be programming in the OT chart as well as a few tweaks for readability purposes, but it shouldn't take long. |

Read the rules, Blade. If a team won a Super Bowl they got a first round bye...

Thanks, Jeeber.
All 1,492 teams I have ratings available for are in this tournament. The first round is a completely random selection of teams (as all rounds will be) that didn't win an NFL or Super Bowl Championship. The purpose of the first round as noted in the initial post is to cut this field down to an evenly bracketed 1,024 teams. Since the '99 Rams won the Super Bowl, they don't play until the round of 1,024. |

I've got the coding pretty much done (there seems to be an occasional bug, but most of the games play correctly), so I'll begin posting results shortly. (Any games affected by a bug, if it's enough to affect the outcome, I'll replay to correct the error)

The first two games of each first round series are in the books. Following the game order listed above, here are the results:

Next step is to play out the third game of each of the split series to this point. If anyone wants the particular scores of any series, let me know and I'll post them. Last edited by Wolfpack : 04-30-2004 at 04:24 PM. Reason: Fixed an error in the list |

Sorry, Tasan. By the game's measurement, the 03 Bengals and 02 Cowboys were pretty close with each being expected to win at home. Cincinnati trashed Dallas 27-3 in Cincy, while in Dallas the Cowboys converted a 41-yard FG in the late stages to tie the game, only to see the Bengals boot a 56-yarder as time expired to win 19-16.
Even so, the 'Boys did get quite a few into the second round and also have perhaps a few more coming in from current series splits, not to mention all five Super Bowl winners start play in the next round. Last edited by Wolfpack : 04-30-2004 at 02:02 PM. Reason: Mixed up the years on the teams |

I was wondering about the '89 Cowboys, I didn't see them listed. Was there a rule I missed about really crappy teams being excluded?

No, they're in it. It just so happened that luck of the draw gave them a bye this round. They'll be playing in the next round.
In the first post, I noted that all pairings were going to be random with some exceptions made to prevent champions meeting and teams from the same franchise history meeting. As there wasn't an evenly divisible number of teams for bracketing, I randomly selected 936 teams to play a first round pairing (the only stipulations being that all AFL, AAFC, and USFL teams were forced to play the first round and that all NFL and Super Bowl champions byed into round two). |

The third game in the split series have been played and here are the results:
Code:
It was interesting to see the franchises that have struggled through time seem to fail to win the third game on a consistent basis, while the better historical franchises seemed to win more than they lost in their third games. For example, the Lions lost all six game threes and the Bengals dropped three of four. By contrast, the Dolphins won 6 of 7 while the Raiders won 5 of 7. It wasn't always the case as a highly successful franchise like the Cowboys got beat each game three except once, while the Saints won 5 of 9. But, in Dallas's defense, their best teams did usually win and their champions haven't played yet. Last edited by Wolfpack : 04-30-2004 at 04:29 PM. Reason: fixed errors in the list |

Regardless, I'll be moving on to Round 2 this weekend or Monday. As always, feel free to ask if you want to know any specific details. |

I did an all Cowboys playoff once -- using 16 of the Pokes all time great teams. I seeded them according to regular season won-loss records, using playoff records and best net points for tiebreakers. It came down to the 77 Boys of Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Drew Pearson and Randy White against the 92 Boys featuring Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and Charles Haley. It was a really tight contest, with the 92 Boys taking a 27-21 lead midway through the final period on a 2-yard Emmitt Smith TD smash. However, they don't call Staubach the original "Captain Comeback" for nothing. He takes the 77 squad down the field and fires a 12-yard TD pass to Preston Pearson with 1:15 remaining to give the 77 Boys a 28-27 lead. The 77 Doomsday D made it stand, as Ed "Too Tall" Jones sacked Aikman on 4th and long at midfield. Great, great game. |

Heh. It is. I wouldn't do it if I hadn't developed a VB app that does just about everything for me and I just report the results. 968 games by hand...forever and a day. 968 games in this utility...about 3 seconds. I'll be spending more time reporting than playing, by far. It's also given me insight as to what I should tweak here and there to make things more useful in the program. Since I've added the close game and overtime portions, I'm probably going to return to my college football history dynasty after this since it will now do record tracking (though I'd like to figure out some way of outputting a weekly snapshot during the season replay). It was getting to be a grind to enter all the quarter scores in an Excel spreadsheet so that wins and losses could be properly tracked. (Not to mention the fact that the 1901 poll recorded a half-dozen votes and that was down from a dozen in 1900, which doesn't do wonders for motivation) |

I've finished researching what the tournament has lost in the first round. Four AFL champs and six Super Bowl runners-up were tossed to the side (including 1967 Oakland, which counts on both lists). The complete casualty list of prominent teams:
*1984 USFL Bandits won a Wild Card spot, but were eliminated by Birmingham 36-17 in the playoffs *1985 USFL Bandits received a Wild Card at 10-8, but lost to Oakland 30-27 in the opening round of the playoffs *1977 Bears earned a Wild Card at 9-5, but were promptly bounced by the Cowboys 37-7 *1984 Bears won the NFC Central at 10-6, shut out in NFC championship by 49ers 23-0 *1991 Bears got a Wild The draw is done for Round 2. To make things easier to follow, we'll do the results in eight groups of 64 pairings apiece. In this instance, I won't bother with re-sorting alphabetically by team. I've done the random draw such that the NFL and Super Bowl Champs all play in the last group of pairings.
So, here is the first group of 64: Code:
WC--Wild Card team that year D--Division champion that year C--Conference champion that year SB--Super Bowl champion that year L--League champion that year Last edited by Wolfpack : 05-04-2004 at 04:36 PM. Reason: Added notations for playoff teams |

Game 3's are played out. Here are the results:
Code:
As for the marquee matchup between 93 Buffalo and 87 Cleveland, the Browns broke open a 7-0 halftime game and won handily 24-9 to advance. The USFL is now down to four teams as the 1984 Stars were knocked out by the lowly Chargers of 2003, but not without a fight. The Stars converted a 45-yard field goal to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Stars got the ball first in OT, but missed on a game-winning 47-yarder. The Chargers made them pay as they took the resulting possession down the field and converted a 33-yard field goal to win 27-24. Last edited by Wolfpack : 05-05-2004 at 05:18 PM. |

Sorry, Cowboys fans. It seemed to be a horrid series all-around for that 1978 team. Game one, they were favored by 13 at home, but actually trailed 10-3 at halftime before eeking out two second half touchdowns to win 17-10. The narrow defeat must've been inspiring to the Oilers because their defense continued to keep the Cowboys under control in game two in Houston. Dallas led 10-7 at halftime and 13-10 after three, but the Oilers scored a TD in the fourth to a Dallas FG to take a 17-16 lead. Dallas had a chance to win, but a 45-yard FG missed late and Houston pulled the upset (Dallas had been favored by 5 in the game in Houston). Which brings us to game three at the neutral site. Dallas would be a nine-point favorite. Here's the actual output from the game program:
Code:
Once again, the Cowboy offense failed to crack the Oiler defense and the Oilers did just enough to stay in the game until the late game heroics. Three very fluke games, IMO. The dice for Dallas were cold and just stayed there throughout the series. They were expected to score over 20 points in all three games and never did it. Houston actually rolled about average for their scoring ability based on their matchup with Dallas. Even so, the close game factor was heavily in favor of Dallas, so it should have allowed Dallas to pull out the win while the Oilers faltered. Again, Dallas was cold, rolling a very low number in the game at Houston, while the Oilers rolled two very high numbers in the neutral site game to offset their weak CGF rating (in the game above, it would be the last rating listed after the team names, 8 for Dallas and -8 for Houston). All in all, a perfect storm of bad rolls for Dallas resulted in Houston's win in the series. |

Could be. I didn't rate these teams, I'm just using them. I do think, however, the guy who did rate them used a basic PF-PA mathematical formula of some kind to arrive at his ratings, rather than be subjective about it.

Dola...
The normalization rating is subjective, actually. I'm not sure how he arrives at that number and why and when it increases as time goes along. The 1994 season had a normalization grade of 16, while 1978 had a grade of 12. What this did was give the 94 Houston team four points towards determining their final scoring grade while taking four points away from Dallas, essentially an eight-point swing for each game of the series. Without it, I don't think Houston is competitive, let alone wins the series. This sort of rating is a rather ticklish thing in terms of this sort of "what if" tournament. On the one hand, without such a rating, teams from older eras with less competition or talent or training may perhaps be too good in this sort of cross-era competition. However, the grade itself is subjective and perhaps may penalize too much in the other direction. Because of it, I doubt many teams from before the merger will even reach the round of 64, much less be contenders. If the 1937 Giants, for example, played the 2003 Bengals, the Bengals get 16 points toward their final rating (17-1=16), while the Giants lose those 16 points. Have the changes to the game since 1937 merited all those points? I don't know, but since I didn't make this game, I don't know the philosophy behind the rating to know how to adjust it. Even so, it still took bad luck for Dallas to lose. They should have won the series as they were favored to win in all three games. Truly, play this game ten tomes and Dallas wins 8 of them. Their problem was that Houston's two of ten came in two of the first three games potentially. |

A brief census report on which current NFL franchises are doing well and which ones aren't. I'll update these figures after each round, so these first figures are after the first round and don't include any second round results yet:
Most teams left: Cleveland/LA/St. Louis Rams, with 53 Fewest teams left: Houston Texans, with 2 (fewest among pre-1976 expansion teams are the Cincinnati Bengals and the New York Titans/Jets, with 25 each) Best percentage of teams left: Houston Texans (2 of 2) and Baltimore Ravens (8 of 8), with 100% (best among pre-1976 expansion teams are the Miami Dolphins, with 35 of 38 teams, or 92.3% left) Worst percentage of teams left: New York Titans/Jets, with 56.8% (25 of 44) Here's a similar breakdown for calendar years (note, these figures are just for teams that still exist in the current NFL, folded franchises don't count against the total): Most teams left: 1999 season, with 31 Fewest teams left: 1938 season, with 5 (fewest among post-1960 seasons are 1965 and 1967 with 9 each) Best percentage of teams left: 1999 season, with 100% (31 of 31) (it should be noted that the 1999 teams went 20-0 in the opening round, so it wasn't because they didn't play in the opening round) Worst percentage of teams left: 1967 season, with 36% (9 of 25) Last edited by Wolfpack : 05-08-2004 at 09:36 PM. |

Here's the schedule in the second group of 64 pairings:
Code:
Conferece champs are plentiful in this grouping, including probably one of the greatest teams never to win the Super Bowl, the 1984 Dolphins, with all of Dan Marino's single-season passing records (5,084 yards, 48 touchdowns, etc). Initial glance suggest the best pairing of the group to be the 1990 49ers and the 1995 Packers, who were division champs in their respective years. San Francisco had the best record in the NFL in 1990 at 14-2, but were upset in the conference championship by the Giants, who went on to defeat the Bills in Super Bowl XXV. The Packers won the NFC Central at 11-5, but had to play on Wild Card weekend. They beat the Falcons and then knocked off the Packers in San Francisco before succombing to the Cowboys in the NFC title game. The Cowboys then beat Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX. Here are the results of the first two games played in each series:
Code:
The battle I expected between the 1990 49ers and the 1995 Packers never materialized as the Packers swept the series. Game one in Green Bay was somewhat close as the 49ers turned the ball over on downs late and lost 20-16. In San Francisco, the Packers used a 10-point fourth quarter to blow open a 12-7 contest and won 22-7 to complete the sweep. There have been three big upsets thus far: the 1989 Chargers beat the 1997 Raiders, the 1987 Patriots knocked off 1988 AFC Champion Cincinnati, and the USFL will live to see round three as the 1985 Birmingham Stallions move on after sweeping the 1981 Oakland Raiders. Oh, and for you Cowboys fans still miffed about the 1978 team getting bounced, here's some relief for you: Code:

Excellent round for the Cowboys here. Let's hope that the '87 squad can make it a clean sweep for us in this bracket...

Game 3's of each series are now played:
Code:
Nothing terribly surprising in this batch. A number of upsets, but not really big upsets as most favorites that lost were only 1- or 2-point favorites. The largest upset was the 1998 Giants going down to the 1989 Bucs as the Giants were 6-point favorites in that contest and lost 20-10. Speaking of the Giants, they seemed to have a rough go of it in these deciding games as they had five teams involved in this batch of Game 3's and only the 1972 team got through, beating the 1948 Bears 33-21 in a slight upset. |

Group 3 pairings now being posted:
Code:
Nine conference champs are in action in this group and one that coulda, woulda, shoulda been (1998 Minnesota) is also seeing the field. At the opposite end, we have the only winless, tied-less team in history (1976 Bucs) and another team that nearly matched them in the strike shortened 1982 season (the Colts, who went 0-8-1). Best matchups seem to be 1992 Vikings and 2001 Steelers (both division champs), and the 1987 Broncos against the 1997 Giants. 1987 was Denver's second straight Super Bowl appearance, but it ended in a humiliating 42-10 loss to the Redskins. The Giants won a fairly weak NFC East in 1997 and were knocked out by a 9-7 Minnesota squad in the Wild Card round. Results of the first two games to be posted shortly. |

Results of the first two games in the series:
Code:
Three upsets in this batch ("upset" in this case means a team was favored in both games and lost both to get swept). 1992 Minnesota took both games from 2001 Pittsburgh, though game two in Minnesota was only a line of -1 for the Steelers. A somewhat bigger upset was the 1990 New England Patriots (1-15 that year), beat 1978 Washington (8-8). Washington was favored by 13 at home and 5 on the road and dropped both by 5. The other upset was the 1962 Steelers over the 1953 Rams, with the Rams favored similarly to Washington, though the records of the two teams were nowhere near as askance (1953 Rams were 8-3-1 in a very competitive NFL West, while the 1962 Steelers were 9-5 and 2nd in the NFL East, despite being badly outscored 312-363). There are some great clashes that are going to a third game: *1983 Washington and 1989 LA Rams have taken turns winning road games by convincing margins. The neutral site battle has Washington the slight favorite. *The matchup between 1978 San Diego and 1993 Denver is heading to a game three after each team took the home game in the series. The neutral game favors the Chargers. *The 2003 NY Jets have pushed the 1995 AFC Champion Steelers to a third game after both won at home. Pittsburgh is the favorite in game three, though it's only a one-point line. *Another conference champion receiving a stiff challenge is the 1981 Cowboys, who won at Oakland, but were beaten badly at home by the 1998 Raiders. Game three is expected to be a tight affair with the Cowboys favored just barely. *The 1997 Giants have also done well, splitting with the 1987 AFC Champion Broncos. The linesmakers have surprisingly installed the Giants as the one-point favorite in game three. *A series not involving champions or even playoff teams, but still a good one nonetheless is the 1967 Chiefs battling the 1977 Redskins. Both teams were 9-5 in their respective seasons and each took their respective home games. Game three has been set as a straight-up win/loss with no line for either team. *The 1978 Rams and 1992 Packers are exchanging blows that have resulted in romps at home for both teams. Like the Chiefs-Redskins game three, this game is also a straight-up, no-line contest. Last edited by Wolfpack : 05-17-2004 at 12:57 PM. Reason: 1976 Succaneers are now 0-16, rather than 2-14 |

Here's how that series shook out, Jeeber:
Code:
The game in Big D was a toss-up, but as you can see, Dallas buried them in an avalanche in the first half and won going away. Game two in DC was the upset game as they must've rolled a high CG die roll to offset the -6 modifier to score the game-winning touchdown. To put a bit of historical context to it, 2000 Dallas was 5-11 but they lost one game to Arizona by a point, to the Giants by 4, and lost two others in OT, so they could have been 9-7 (averaged 18.4 ppg and gave up 22.6 ppg). By contrast, the 89 Skins won the close games Dallas seemed to lose with six of ten wins by 7 points or less (averaged 24.1 ppg and gave up 19.3). So, it isn't that far-fetched in the basic scoring margin context that this game employs, since it doesn't factor in the efforts of individual players and focuses on team scoring and defending ability as a whole. |

Now that I look it up, Dallas rolled a "20" on their CG roll (d20). The only result that their CGF of -6 allowed them to score a touchdown without a chance to respond by Washington. So, they hit the jackpot, as it were, on a 5% chance. They could have scored a touchdown on a "19", but the Skins would have had a chance to respond (albeit at only +1 CGF since the game rules say the second team subtracts 5 from their CGF to reflect the minimal time left to score in).
