Hall of Fame Welcomes Valéncia
Tuesday, November 6th, 2085: One of the best players ever, second baseman José Valéncia, has received the ultimate honor for a baseball player -- being inducted into the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony, which was held today, included tributes from his former teammates. One of them recognized his unparalleled work ethic, another his "naturally pure" swing, and yet another, his love for the game. Valéncia received numerous awards during his playing days, but he said, nothing can compare to being enshrined into the Hall of Fame. In a career spanning 2893 games, Valéncia batted .297 with 3087 hits, 526 home runs, 2002 RBIs and 2014 runs scored. Last edited by Alan T : 09-16-2010 at 07:00 AM. |

Legends Welcome Barbosa to HOF
Tuesday, November 6th, 2085: Another pitcher was inducted into the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame today, but this time, it wasn't a starting pitcher. Instead, Alejandro Barbosa proved that relievers were worth such a distinction for a career that spanned 1078 appearances. His dominating presence led to 583 saves and a 2.86 ERA, while he struck out 1001 in his 1097 innings. During his career Barbosa also chalked up a 67-84 record. "A lot of people think that relievers aren't important enough to be considered Hall of Fame material," the bullpen ace said during his speech. "But my teammates knew differently. All the starters loved having me come in after one of their good performances because they knew they'd get a win that day. I'm just glad that there are other people that agree with them." Something I just realized today... This upcoming season for the franchises that have been around since the beginning, they will play their 20,000th regular season game!
That would be Apex, Baltimore, Boston, Chico, Colorado, Hammersmith, Hartford, Napa Valley, Tokyo |

Napa Valley was in fact around at the beginning as the Appleton Foxes They played in Appleton only 2-3 years I think I remember before actually moving to Texas. You took ownership of them as I think the Texas Travelers until you finally moved them to California where they have been for over 110 seasons! |

Even though we don't have any openings in either league right now, I still like to keep our name around and to advertise the fun we have here over in OOTP land every so often.
I put up a FOOL "recruiting" post over on the OOTP forums. Even though the focus is more to inform people about our leagues than to actually recruit, feel free to drop in and give a good word if you so are moved! Yup, same as Napa Valley, Hammersmith has also moved around some. They started in Charleston, and then moved to Atlanta, where greygoose took them over. I can't remember the team name he gave them, but when I took over in 1976, I changed it to the Firecrackers. And then they moved to Hammersmith with the re-start in 2011.

in the old file, the game had them listed as the Atlanta Firecrackers back in 1968 (the year they moved). As I am not aware of any way to modify that part of the db, I have to assume they were always called that once they moved. I'll go look through old forum posts. |

Heh...I thought I came up with that, but I guess I just took ownership of it. I remember I wrote something up once about the meaning of "Firecracker" (and it wasn't the exploding entertainment sort). In any case, this franchise has been around for quite a while.

That was a pretty good offseason period for the Hooligans. We didn't have a lot to work with (a little over $11 M), but we filled holes in our RH lineup at C, complete holes at 1B, 2B and DH, and grabbed a young star player in Alvarez to go with current young Hooligan OF stars Tulk and Karim.
I essentially filled the holes in the lineup to my satisfaction. Some of them I would have preferred to have been better overall players, but when you have $11 M and need to target some 7-8 players, you need to make a lot of value choices. Outside of Alvarez, I stayed away from Type A's altogether (although I felt Alvarez was worth losing my #1 in any case). My main disappointment was the rest of the league continuing to ignore my compensation free agents. Hopefully I will get some new picks for the draft in this next sim period. How does everyone else feel about their offseasons so far?

I got the two guys I tried to sign. We were only operating with about 8 mil if I remember correctly. I was feeling great about my team last year and that got me nowhere so I'll just say we're going to be crap this year and see where that takes us.

Heck, Teach saying her team's going to be crap is just the reverse jinx anyway. After saying that, she should be summarily named the top contender for FOOL title next season.

Winter Wolves preview:
The story so far. The WW's prepare to make it two in a row but with some drastic changes to the liineup. In an unusual move for them they actually resigned a couple key players as opposed to just letting them go to FA like 1b phenom Roy Larson last year. And their pitching game just MAY NOT be as strong as last year. They were not able to resign either Soriano or Jose Leon (Playoffs MVP winner) and also lost Cantu (but that was planned...goodluck to whoever bought him. Hope you like a pitcher that gives up home runs and gets losses.) To replace the half of the fab four that left, they got a pitcher named Beltre. One of their rookies from last year who was the spot starter and MR did awesomely last season so he gets the promotion into the lineup. IT is rounded out by Orton who was long relief last year. They did get a couple higher priced relivers and closers to add some more punch to the later innings. Hopefully they can excel in late inning games. Their offense got a HUGE upgrade. Scott Bailey is back and some of the rookies from last year that performed poorly are hoping the spring training time will give them the boost they needed. To boost that offense, the manager signed a big paycheck and signed LF Ron Roberge to a 4 year 30 million dollar contract. They also have a great fielding catcher with a great arm that can hit home runs in Angel Fernandez. So with their offense boosted will that be enough to counter the slight decline in starting pitching? We hope the howlers can do it. |

Beltre is a pretty darn good pitcher (or at least he was). 19-9 with a 3.60 ERA in an above average hitter's park last season. A few years ago was my pick for the unluckiest pitcher award too! Question is if at age 32, he can keep it up! |

exactly! I'm stoked to get him, but he has to replace TWO departing pitchers. I'm really hoping the other rookie pans out cause he was awesome in his spot starts last season.
The 5th guy did well in long relief. Although he did blow one of the world series games for me :P But he's all i got as 5th man. I don't think he'll be any worse than Cantu was tho. 4-19. 36 homers he gave up or something like that. So maybe my starting rotaion won't be as depleted as i thought. There are just lotsa question marks. |

Very happy with the Marlies offseason. We picked up a number 1 pitcher in Jose Leon. Plus we brought back Álvarez, our all-star catcher, for under 10 million a year, which is awesome considering he wanted 14+ to resign last week.
If our offense doesn't under achieve, and the starting pitching is decent, we got a shot!! Ann Arbor looks to be a handful though, looking at the preseason report

I think we might have what it takes to rise above that B and go deep in the playoffs. Of course I say that, and we'll go 50-112.
I think its odd that we acquired a fairly studly hitter and he didn't show up in the key acquisitions section on our preview, too. Ranchero negative bias or sloppy coding? We'll see!

That A+ rating is put evil. Everyone knows my guys don't work like that. Start with low expectations and maybe they'll surprise you. If you start at the time, they like to prove you wrong...obstinate little buggers.

Shiu was below the average replacement player? 86-107-87 CON-GAP-POW or something like that. I can't remember his EYE or if he's just a horrible catcher. I would be pretty surprised, though, if he rates below a replacement player at the catcher position.

He had an OBP of .291 last year. Hasn't been an all star in 5+ seasons, In the 4 seasons since turning 30, only one has been with a VORP of above average replacement player. (last year's VORP of 1.5 definitely is not it). He is turning 34 this season, and has shown the indicators the past 2 seasons of the pre-rating fall off that usually shows ratings collapse shortly after. Maybe I will be surprised, but I don't think of him as an impact player and if anything wonder if he might challenge for the most overpaid player award. |

Well, his ratings have been holding fairly steady, and he won't be catching for me, which tends to hurt hitting performance and speed decline, except in the tip top of excellent catchers. As my full-time DH, I expect a nice rebound year. And yes Chief, that last year is an option, although the contract is a fairly favorable declining contract, so as long as he's pretty good, I'll be OK. Thanks for worrying about me though!
