I know I say this every year....but it still amazes me how many people who obviously can NOT sing think that they can. (I know some of these people are acting, just trying to get on TV, but you know some, if not most, actually think they are good singers)

Fox can have their ratings, just not from me.

I thought it was very funny. Simon is evil and totally devoid of moral values though. This season it seems that all the judges have become a little more harsh.

And yet the show would never have reached it popularity without Simon. Which is part of the reason the success of American Idol scares me.

My favorite was Crystal (?), the "interestingly" dressed and made up blonde who couldn't quite understand Simon's question about her tan. Then seeing her mother made it all clear. Also enjoyed the 2 second audition of the Statue of Liberty. It's too bad he dressed up, because in those 2 seconds at least it sounded like he had a decent voice.
I'm not sure I saw any last night that I went "wow" about. Liked the crooner and glad they recognized the fact that Michael Buble and Josh Groban and the like are popular now and not exactly pop singers, then passed him to the next round. There was another guy who I thought was good, but the judges seemed undecided on him even though Paula said he seemed to have the complete package. |

Entertaining, as always. Since it's gotten so popular, pretending to be the next William Hung has gotten a bit out of hand. But as usual, the best are the ones who are totally clueless, like that first guy they profiled.

I was thinking the same thing. But, if you have a decent voice.. better not dress up because I can't remember a single one getting through to hollywood that had a costume on. The oddest one I could remember getting through was that Opera singer from last year...

And dontcha think the producers told all of the contestants to try and sing that stupid Lady Marmelade song? No chance they get video of 30 people sining that song unless they're prompted. I even saw a few people who sang other songs and were rejected in that montage. |

Yeah, I was trying to figure out how they got some of those pissed off people to come back and make an even bigger ass of themselves singing that song. That was the kind of thing that was staged and wasn't as funny as it would have been if it had been "real." That's one of those contrived William Hung moments. I couldn't believe they put that idiot through. If I had been on the fence, I would have been pissed to have gotten passed over for him. Unless they just created an extra spot for him, as opposed to giving him a spot that otherwise would have gone to someone deserving. I can't remember - do they have X number of spots to fill, or are they just shooting at a target of around 125, give or take a few freaks? My favorite moment from last night was when Randy and Paula both said no to someone who was terrible, and Simon said something like, "Ooh, harsh. I would have said yes. Goodbye!" That was freaking hilarious.

How about that last girl singing Marmalade... taking a TON of restarts just so she can sing the most horrible christina aguilera impersonation EVER!
I love the auditions. My interest dips off during the contest itself.

The wife and I figured that he took some sort of bet to do that. Again, another staged audition that wasn't as funny as it would have been if it came across as an honest attempt to make the show.

I don't think they go into the auditions thinking they are going to take a set number of people. I think they just take who they think is good enough. (They say the number at the end of the episode that they take from the city, and it's always some odd number. I think last night was 37). Pretty sure they just worry about getting it down to a good, even number (or whatever number "works" for the later stages) once they get to Hollywood. |

Remember the twins that sang so well and got through to the next round Tuesday? Well, one is now in jail and the other is on the lamb. They are wanted for identity theft, but the kicker is where. They are wanted in Conyers, Georgia for buying a car illegally at the dealership right next to where I am working right now! Weird, wild stuff.

The reason why so many people sing the same song has to do with license agreements. Fox has to have clearance to use songs on the show, even for auditions. This was made apparent when someone sang a Kelly Clarkson song last night.
One report says: Quote:
I'm guessing that contestants have to clear their material even before going in with Simon, Randy and Paula. They are prescreened. |

I can think of at least 2 sets of twins. Was this the set that serenaded Paula? Dumbasses.

Clarkson Deals With 'American Idol' Past
01/18/2006 11:58 AM, AP David Bauder Singer Kelly Clarkson, who vaulted to fame as the first "American Idol" winner in 2002, is now apparently refusing to let any of her songs be used by new contestants on the show. A spokesman for Clarkson insisted it's nothing personal, but the stance prompted a public scolding from "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell. "I think that by ignoring the show you're ignoring the audience who put you there," Cowell said on Tuesday. Clarkson has become a major star in the past year, with her hit "Since U Been Gone" earning both massive sales and critical respect, particularly from a rock community that has looked upon "American Idol" contestants warily. Her album "Breakaway" earned a Grammy nomination for best pop vocal album. Yet it may have cost her a good relationship with the nation's most popular talent show. "American Idol" must obtain permission from owners of song licenses before the music can be used on the show. While many love the exposure, some artists — the Beatles, for one — like to rigidly control use of their music. Clarkson is not allowing any of her songs to be licensed for other uses, said Roger Widynowski, a spokesman for Sony BMG. "It has nothing to do with `Idol,'" he said. The show's executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, said he spoke to Clarkson's manager on Friday and the manager said he was unaware of the situation. He said he's waiting for a call back. Before "Breakaway," Clarkson fired Simon Fuller, the "American Idol" creator, as her manager, saying that although he was a "great guy," she needed someone who could give her career more attention. She teamed with Swedish hitmaker Max Martin on "Since U Been Gone." It's the same delicate position faced by countless other musicians through show biz history, wanting to break away and show artistic independence without alienating those who gave them their start. Cowell said he hoped Clarkson would let her music be used on "American Idol." "No matter how talented Kelly Clarkson is, she would not be in the position she's in now without winning this show," he said. "And forget the way she feels about us or the producers or anybody else, or the terrible songwriters she alleges she was with which sold her millions of records. "It's the public who bothered to pick up the phone to vote for her," he said. "If she refuses to give songs to be used on the show, it's like saying to every person who voted for you, `you know what? Thank you. I'm not interested in you anymore.'" With the seemingly unquenchable public interest in "American Idol," it's not like the show really needs Clarkson. But she's plainly the best example producers can point to in proving how they can open the door to wish fulfillment. Widynowski said he would not comment on Cowell's remarks. For his part, Cowell said, "I don't like this, when they walk away from the show and kind of forget." |
