If your campus is part of the MSCA (Microsoft Campus Agreement), you might be able get it even cheaper than that.

I can get the latest Office for free. At my last institution it only cost 7$.

Worth it? Never really had any issues with Vista.

my wife hates vista, it runs fairly poorly. Since vista came preinstalled on her laptop, I am hoping that a clean install of windows 7 will help

A guy on TV said that it fixes all the problems that Windows Vista had. And then another guy with more hair said that fixed all the problems Windows XP had.

I am recommending everyone in my company not to upgrade to windows 7 at least for now being MS neutered the security functionality with there changes to UAC.

I didn't either (a lot of the anti-Vista stuff was overblown), but I guess I'm a Microsoft early adopter (got Vista on the first day and pre-ordered 7). I really like the new taskbar and some speed improvements. If you can get it cheap, I'd recommend it (I pre-ordered it early and got it for $50 on Amazon).

Every "Vista Guide" on the web pretty much says (and my experience certainly agrees with this) that in order for Vista to be remotely usable, UAC must be turned off.

I have been using Vista for almost a year now and haven't turned off UAS and haven't had any real issues with it. I don't do anything all that intricate or complex with my computer, but other than occassionally having to click and extra box for UAC authorization, I haven't noticed a thing.
