POLL: Will there be a lockout in the NFL in 2011?

This is a shitty topic, and sure it's two years away, but the rumors are rampant, and honestly, you do not need to look far to see that certain aspects are getting out of control.

The biggest worry for me is rookie salaries are so far out of control that how can that maintain itself? I think that is going to be one of the crucial points that need figuring out.

Beyond that, the problem is the owners are becoming more vocal about their discontent. The ball is in their court, and honestly, chances are the lockout happens.

It sure seems like it'd be a nightmare scenario, but it becomes more and more likely every day.

So what do you all think?

Dola .. Upshaw passing is going to be even more of a problem because with how long it'll take to find a successor, it's valuable time wasting away from concessions being made.

The players are going to have to give, and how often does that work?

I hope not, although the Mayans did indicate the end of the world will be in 2012, so they wouldn't be that far off.

I don't see why a more normal rookie scale for those first 10-15 picks would be so hard to get approval from the Union. Those high bonuses end up costing veterans jobs right out of the gate, and it's not like veterans base their salary demands off what high-profile rookies get.

Only if the Union can get some sort of guarantee that the money they take from the rookies will go to those veterans.

How bad would it suck if you pressed the "End Season" button and a box came up that said "Due to the player strike, the next season has been cancelled". And that was the year your aging veterans had a chance to take it all and they subsequently retire.

I think we're heading for a lockout. We might even see replacement players before it's all said and done. The players will try and strong-arm the owners and the owners will close it down just to show they can get away with it. Once they start to miss the revenues, it's open tryouts for the 2011 season!

For the most part, the salary cap functionally gets you there, doesn't it? According to the all-knowing wikipedia entry, NFL teams must spend at least 85.2% of the salary cap. In dollars, that is a $99 million minimum of the $116 million cap. Both the cap and the floor are adjusted yearly based on overall revenues.

Just bumping. This thing still has no progress, and a lot of insiders, namely guys like Schefter are positive we will see a lockout in 2011.

Should be interesting as the NFLPA nears naming a new President and then the owners meeting upcoming.

The recession will keep a deal from happening before a lockout. Next season is going to be very difficult for small market teams and 2010 will likely be almost as tough. I think a lot of owners are thinking that Brown and Wilson were right in opposing the last agreement.

Doesn't the NFL move to an uncapped system in 2010?

I'm thinking an uncapped system will be very bad for football and open the door for basketball to start regaining popularity again. If I wanted to watch a sport of have and have-nots, there's always baseball.

With the massive cap increases the past few years we've essentially been in an uncapped era for awhile now. I don't think the lack of a cap will be that dramatic. No team is gonna pay backups 10mil just cause they can(save new England)

I think that there will be a work stoppage before 2010 is played uncapped. The idea of an uncapped year is distasteful to the owners, and the details of the uncapped year are distasteful to the players.

The whole idea that teams will be able to spend a ton of money on premium free agents is a fallacy. The rules change so drastically for that year (extra franchise tags, six years to be FA eligible, etc.) that there will be precious few players on the market worth premium money.

The NFLPA has a new leader in DeMaurice Smith, a trial lawyer who keeps talking about "going to war". He also has echoed Upshaws sentiments before he passed that if the 2010 season is uncapped, that the NFLPA will never agree to a cap again.

Obviously it's a lot of posturing on both ends, but the players have no incentive to agree to a cap if 2010 is uncapped, which it sure seems like it will be.

Dola, I should add the problem with an uncapped year for players will come with the fact the salary floor will also cease to exist. Notoriously cheap franchises like Arizona could take the Oakland A's approach to boost profits. It could really fucking suck.
