Civ 4 Multiplayer Game #2

Okay, I decided to start a new thread about tonights game.

I will get things rolling at 7:00pm CST. The 1st turn of the game will start at 7:30CST. The map size will be big enough for 5 players, unless we have a huge interest, then we might go with a bigger map, and a later start date or something. Everyone that is there before 7:30 can help decide the map options. If we start at 7:30, I think we can be close to being done before midnight.

Room name will be FOFC Multiplayer
Password: trout

I ask everyone that does join, not to password protect your civ, unless you know you are leaving and plan to come back. If you password protect it, nobody else can join in later as that civ if you leave.

I want to play tonight, but am just installing it in a few minutes. I probably should play at least one solo play game before trying to jump into a MP game and slowing things down (messing up.) I'll be in for the next one though

There'll be a timer I assume, so no worry about slowing things down

LOL

I'm going to install in the next half hour. I'm at least going to check out the tutorial to see what is different. Not sure, if I'll make it in tonight or not, but if I don't, I'll definitely be up for a game tomorrow

Well I haven't eaten dinner yet but am interested in this. I just played a very frustrating game where it seemed like all I was doing was fending off barbarians. It was not very fun.

I'd love to do this sometime, but I think I'll keep honing my skills in the single-player game for now. I'll definitely be up for it in the future though.

I tried to log-on to GameSpy to play, but I didn't have an account. Tried to make an account and it denied me. Just kept returning "Log-in failed" or something like that. Was too tired to try to figure it out at the moment, so I finished my single-player game instead.

Ah...wasn't there some GameSpy software I was prompted to install when I installed Civ IV...I bet I didn't install that, and I bet that caused the problem.

Maybe next time, though. I'd like to try Multiplayer.

Well it took us 7 hours, but we finished the game. Congratz to Calis, who took over for vexroid. I made a critcal error, and voted for him when I hit enter to end my turn. But it is late, I am exhausted. Have to say that the normal time limit is way to much. I have some more thoughts to post, but I will do them in the morning.

Yeah, was pretty fun..too long for sure though.

I just lucked out on it really, I joined up and just hung back trying to figure out the game while the other guys duked it out and eventually I started pulling ahead. I mostly just focused on research, research, research, and building wonders whenever I could, was really shooting for a cultural victory. I'll take the cheap screw-up victory though.

I almost cost myself the game towards the end, I REALLY wanted to test out nukes, so I started Mass-Producing ICBMs and launching them at the Egyptians. It wound up not panning out, my army wasn't in shape to do any real damage to them, but I fended them off and got a treaty. The game went until the final 6 turns also.

Vex- Sorry man, I had no idea I was playing the Civ you started out with, I'd have switched over when you came in had I known. Anyhow, thanks for the setup..it worked.

Lot more could be said, a huge FOFC group would be a blast, we'd have to get some teams going and such. I think it's EXTREMELY difficult to annihilate a human Civ 1v1, so it's going to take quite a bit of teamwork.

Man I should have stuck around for the last hour! Of course if you were lobbing nukes, there would have been no treaty with the Egyptians.

I agree that the normal timer is way too long. I also propose that I am a TERRIBLE Civ player.

Heh, I wouldn't have thrown them if you were there.

I never had an army worth a crap, and I didn't learn until after I started the land invasion of Egypt that you HAVE to get siege engines. About the 4th time I saw my NAVY Seals die attacking some Musketeers or the likes, I knew I was in trouble.

I just wanted San Francisco back. Thieving Egyptians.

I also had fun trying to sabotage Airhog's attempt at building a space shuttle with my spies. It didn't work out too well, but it was fun to try. We had quite a UN control struggle, and right when I was in full swing of mass production of ICBM's, Airhog gets the Nuclear Proliferation treaty passed, which killed my master plan of destroying the world.

We should experiment with different numbers of turns and timer speeds to try and create a few classes of games.

E.g.,

1) Short Attention Span Theatre

  • Blazing speed timer (30 secs, i think)
  • 100 - 150 turns
  • Start in later epoch
2) Grognard Gang
  • whatever the settings you used for the 7 hour game

blazing speed timer 30 secs is too hard to micromanage and look over things per turn.

i think setting the timer per turn to normal speed and set a limit time when the game ends will be better.

whoever is leading after the game ends wins the game.

Well, hence the different classifications.

I've found that the 30 seconds adds a lot of excitement because you really have a sense of urgency and you only have time to focus on really important things.

What was classic is that you (I think it was you) attacked me on like turn 2. I built a city on turn 1, and next thing I know I have someone right next to my city attacking. Fortunately I had put my warrior on defense or you would have wiped me out on the second turn of the game.

Last night we playing on a small map, starting from the classical period, and the game mode was quick. I can only imagine playing on epic or even normal.

It should further emphasized that this was a small map with 6 players meaning the map was "too small". I can only imagine what things would've been like on a regular sized map.
