Valentine's Day. Is it really a holiday?
Just wondering the thoughts here on V-Day.
I can see it when you're seeing someone, but what is the deal with people making it a big deal? My mom called me this morning to say "Happy Valentine's Day!" I asked "why?" She also used to say I should get my daughter a card for it. I find this weird and unnecessary. There is no reason to wish people a happy v-day that you are not romantic with. |

I don't even think it is necessary when you're romantic with someone.
Why do I need a special day to show someone I love them or make them feel special? I would like to think I do that every day.

I agree, but it's one of those things where society has fucked us so hard that even if you have a woman that says she feels this way you still have to do something... or else. |

I got one valentine so far, from a 40ish male investigator with a mustache who carries a gun.

To be fair, the country doesn't really give a damn whether you show it you love it or not. July 4 is to show off to other people that you love it more than they do. They put up a flag, you put up a bigger flag. They have sparklers, you get fireworks. |

Holiday? No.
A day to do something special for someone special in your life, sure who cares, but you should be doing that other days as well. I don't feel there is an issue that there is a day specifically set aside to remind us to do special things for the one we love.

I'll start really really getting into Valentine's Day when March 20th gets as much attention.

FWIW, your mother's take isn't anything I'd call unusual enough to qualify as "weird". Maybe it's generational (you & I are 5 years apart, so our parents are probably close in age) but throughout my childhood there was always some sort of Valentine's gift (typically candy) from both my parents & grandparents, and that seemed to be pretty common for my peers as well IIRC. Flash forward to more recent times & both set of grandparents in turn bought my son V-Day stuff until he was probably around 10. I think we probably bought him stuff until he was maybe 8 or 9. Nostalgically I bought him some chocolate when I picked up the flowers & candy for my wife this year (something I haven't given her in a number of years, so I got bonus points for the surprise).

Of course it's stupid and pointless. And even though my fiancee thinks the same, I still got her a card and something small because I wanted to. She was much more impressed when I randomly bought her flowers last Thursday than anything I would have done for today.

It's not stupid at all. Up until 6th grade it was the only way I knew if a girl would Be Mine or was Crazy 4Me.

I was made aware of Sweetest Day this past October, which in comparison makes Valentines Day look like Christmas.

My wife loves valentines day - she's insists we get presents for all our kids and my youngest has to take in candy for everyone in his class.
I don't 'get' it myself - back home Valentines day is intended for people to declare love for a significant other and make money for Hallmark .... nothing else, not sure exactly what happened to it in Florida, but it seems weird to me |

They made a pretty big deal of it in my kids kindergarten class. He came home Monday with a list of all the kids names in his class and a note that they would be having a V-Day party. We got little pink and blue bags of candy for all the kids, with little "To:, From:" tags on them. When Jake got home today, I noticed that was sort of what everyone had done.
Not sure if this was normal or not throughout the country, but kids (at least elementary age) make a deal of it. |

That's pretty much the norm in all 50 states afaik. A tradition that goes back well before I was ever in school I believe. The exceptions that exist are usually either of the "Oh Noes, Candy !" variety or lower income districts where the expense is seen as a particular burden.

Are we off school? Are we off work? No? Not a holiday.
Made up to spur sales for a slow period of retail.

St. Patrick will not be pleased And I don't even want to think about how the various patrons of Halloween are going to react.

I don't know, my girlfriend bought me a 3 month subscription to a beer of the month club. A dozen microbrews delivered to my doorstep monthly.
