Olympics Pool

Had fun with the WSOP Pool again, so I thought this would also be cool.

Here are the rules I came up with...

1. Pick 10 Athletes

2. Two of your athletes must have never won an Olympic medal before. These athletes will get double points for you.

3. Two of your athletes must come from an event other than Swimming, Gymnastics, or Track & Field.

4. Points are scored based on medals won. A Gold is worth 3 points. A Silver is worth 2 points. A Bronze is worth 1 point.

5. Bonus points are awarded based on record setting performances. An Olympic record is worth 1 bonus point, while a World Record is worth 3 bonus points.

6. A record only counts if it is an officially sanctioned record by the IOC, so no silly records like "most three pointers missed in a basketball game."

Actually, I'm thinking that if we do this, we may need to do a draft/bid system so everyone doesn't have the same people. I was going to pick the exact same list as Subby.

I thought I'd open this thread and see a story about the green algae now starting to attack the actual Olympics pool complex.

Shrug. Still want to do it, but I think it needs to be a different format to be competitive.

I'm open to suggestions.

draft might be the best. or do a full-on olympics draft that includes historical as well as current. because honestly I think with a straight current-draft you're going to have a lot of loading-up on the USA with everybody's first couple picks and then a lot of random people that nobody has ever heard of that have relatively little chance of winning anything

that is the problem - maybe something where you pick by event and you can only pick someone once?

katie hoff has a chance to pull someone almost even, but realistically once those two are off the board everyone else is basically fucked.

which is why i suggested making it historic or something to try to balance that out

I have run an olympics draft before... here are a few thoughts that might help.

--Don't even try to do the whole Olympics. Pick certain general events, especially ones that are on TV. Swimming, diving, gymnastics, major team sports, track and field, boxing, that sort of thing. Require everyone's roster ot include something like 2 swimmers, 1 diver, 1 distance runner, 1 sprinter, 1 national team, and so forth.

--As a proxy for everything else, have people pick nations. Maybe you rule out the top handful of countries, and make things more interesting. But that way, you can theoretically have an interest even in the modern pentathlon just because you have Spain and that other FOFC douchebag in 2nd place has Italy, and your guys are squaring off for the gold there.

--Weight the major multi-medal events less... you don't want to make Michael Phelps and his potential for 5-8 medals totally dominate the system. So, make a swimming medal worth less than, say, a boxing medal. Your call on how to do it overall, but you don't want the whole thing to be dominated by a few events that just have more overlap than others.

Hope that helps.

How about we do a list of events, and have everyone pick the winner of each event. We can select events where there will be some doubt.

For example...

100m Men
200m Men
Women's Gymnastics All Around

etc.

there's doubt in the 100m Men?

Tyson Gay FTW bitches!!! (and it's a damn shame about his hammy or he'd have the 200 also - stupid qualifying rules)

Or we could even do top 3 in each event. That way, we could include pretty much any event, including basketball and swimming.

We just do a list of all the major events and everyone picks the top 3 in each one, using the same 3-2-1 scoring system for each one you get correct, and also the same bonus points for WR or OR's by your gold medal pick.

If you used the points system, you could divide by the total number of events entered for that person. So in Phelps case, if he won say 4 gold and 2 silvers he would be worth 4 x 3 + 2 X 2 = 16 / 8 = 2.0 points. Then you get some kind of risk reward over picking people in many events vs specialists.
