Recycling (re: Edmonton Composting Facility)

Edmonton Composting Facility - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So, I was looking up some information about Edmonton and came across this. They divert 60% of their waste from the landfill? Apparently, according to the Edmonton wikipedia page, in the next few years, that number will grow to over 80%. That's pretty damn impressive- cutting your waste in a fifth.

Anyone know anything else about it? Or about how much waste is being deferred in parts of the US, particularly large cities?

Since they expanded recycling here recently, I'd say my trash output has been cut in half with what they'll let us throw in the recycling bin. More and more product packaging is recyclable, and that's a good chunk of what we pitch (cans, bottles, boxes, the plastic crap they add to them, etc).

Gathering intelligence on us?? You aren't a terrorist, are you??

I really don't have much to add except that we usually have just as many "blue" bags as we do garbage bags at the curb every week. My wife is very conscious of recycling, more so than myself, but I'm getting better.

Regarding our state of the art recycling facility...I know of it but I can't say that I've ever thought about going for a tour or learning more about it. Maybe I should.

There is a place in Chicago that converts over 90% of commercial waste from buildings that are town down. They basically recycle all the wood and metal that comes down.

An NPR story on SF's composting program noted that they actually make money on the program by selling the incredibly rich compost to vineyards.
