Madden 09 - The Hype Machine kicks in

Never fear Madden fans. The developers have heard your cries for change to make Madden a better game. As a result, they are implementing a big change..............new announcers.........

Well, I'd guess we'll get the standard comments about 'rebuilding the game engine from the ground up' and 'DB AI that received a major overhaul' that we hear every year.

Maybe this will be the year we finally get referees on field, stat overlays, and kicking nets! You know, all those features that we had back in Madden 2004!

Another critical feature has arrived. Madden '09 Collector's Edition featuring both Madden '09 and Head Coach '09 in one package with 'exclusive videos' for the low price of $89.99.

Interesting -

Previously Head Coach was announced for 4th quarter of 09, so that moves up the date for it.

- I think EA is actually doing one smart thing with the increased interaction btw Head Coach and Madden. I'm not buying it, but that will probably increase sales of Head Coach for those Madden players who want to be able to create their own plays.

I was at Gamestop a few weeks ago and they had a 5 foot tall, 4 foot wide shelf of Madden 09 pre-order cases. A group of 15-20 year old guys came in and said "I just bought 08 and 09 is out!?!?" and took it to the counter to buy it. The clerk talked him into a preorder 6 months in advance. The hype machine has been kicking.

According to this Gamespot article, the only way to get Head Coach 09 will be part of that Collector's Edition Bundle of Madden 09:

That little blurb about being able to design plays in HC and import them into Madden does sound interesting. If they can successfully implement it, that might make things a bit interesting.

I like Madden and EA in general, but it's the same every year.

EA: "This year, we've fixed the AI. It will finally be realistic, not crappy like it's been every other year."

Us: "Um, didn't you say that last year?"

EA: "We lied last year. But this year... it's going to be awesome."

Of course not.

Daivd Winters already bought the exclusive license for beer tents in football games, so EA knew it wasn't even worth trying.

According to this, Head Coach is only going to be part of the Collector's Edition of Madden, not a standalone game. First I've heard of it, may have been posted elsewhere.

Because we're celebrating our new weekly feature, we thought it would be fitting to tell you about the new User-Controlled Celebrations. Gone are the days of just hoping your player will celebrate after a touchdown. Now you will be in control after a touchdown, and a simple push of the "celebrate" button will allow your player to spring into action. If that player happens to be known for his elaborate celebrations, then he'll perform some of those that you've seen him do in real life. For example, a player like Terrell Owens has more than 10 of his familiar celebrations available.

Not only will unique players have unique celebrations, but different "Hot Spots" in the end zone will feature different celebrations, as well, like dunking over the goal post or hot-shotting in the corner of the end zone. Specific stadiums will even feature their own local celebrations. Can you say, "Lambeau Leap?" We've also been told that an extra "hidden" control will let you steal an opponent's celebration so you can really rub it in. However, you'll have to discover that one on your own.

I am sure this will revitalize the series and bring back all the people who have stopped buying it because of all the bugs.

It's amazing just how oblivious the company and developers are to the reason for the continued drop in sales. For the past two years, they've added unneeded features while failing to address the core problems and then watched their sales fall by double-digit percentages. I'm guessing this 'new' feature will make it three for three. Unbelievable.

This is the problem that happens when you don't make the developement people accountable to the customer service people. If the service division has no way to force the development division to do things, this happens. Developement works on whatever it wants, whether or not the clientel actually wants that.

I still can not figure out what they were thinking with the "create-a-fan" crap.

It seems like "the sims" people have taken over the company and have their fingers in every game now.

Agreed. But it's tough to market gameplay 'fixes.' Even EA's marketing department would have a hard time selling the fact that players won't fumble as much anymore if that becomes a change in the game engine. So we end up with 50 new end zone celebrations. Yippee. Count me as another who won't be picking this one up.

No, but they'd get much better word of mouth through the internet. Right now, they're getting pounded by the gaming communities, which should be their core audience.

So I've finally got Madden 08 and am playing superstar with my NCAA 08 QB. I'm not excited for 09 at all, unless:

1) My WRs start going at least as hard for the ball as the DBs do.
2) My HB figures out what a "hole" is.
3) LBs stop having football magnets in their hands.
4) I stop getting stupid repeated e-mails every freakin' week that have no bearing on gameplay. How do I stop being a loner Mr. GM? I have no clue, and you won't tell me!
5) I loved getting the draft e-mail. In the offseason. After a full season. Congratulating me on being drafted. You know, almost a year ago.
6) Stop hanging on me when I decide not to wait for all the silly pre- and post-game stuff and try to click through things! And definitely don't hang just after I won a tight game! (I of course lost on the replay after reboot)
7) Who thought it was a good idea to show me PROFILE records when I'm in Superstar? Where's the season records of the teams playing?
8) Where's my "turn off the stupid ringbuilder feature" option?
9) What are these "trophies" it tells me about after my game is over, which ones did I earn, and how did I earn them?

If this version doesn't allow my superstar to go to strip clubs and get DUIs or take some sort of banned supplement, I'm not buying it.

How can EA even claim their game is realistic without being able to do any of that stuff.

Bring back Joe Montana football...

It does this in Franchise too, and it has to be the dumbest design decision ever. That, and the trophies.

I bought last year's when it dropped to $20, and even if it did have franchise (which is what everyone, including me, focused on), I still wouldn't get it. The gameplay felt a bit unresponsive, it felt really unbalanced and the AI was, at times, far more terrible than any AI I've seen in any Madden game. It wasn't NFL 2k5 without the NFL and franchise, it was IMO, in almost every way except graphically, several steps behind NFL 2k5.

I may become a leper with this comment, but Madden 08 was far better than APF 2k8 in every way (but for the record, I hated Madden 08).

So unless I hear "OMFG this game is actually super awesome for the first time ever" from at least a dozen people on this forum that usually hate Madden (and NCAA), I'm passing on all football games this year.

Except maybe Backbreaker, even though that'll be just a tech demo.
