Torchlight = $10 on Steam
Just in case any of you have more self-control than I had and haven't picked it up yet.

Unfortunately, this is on my Christmas list, so I had to settle for pointing out to my wife that it was on sale this weekend in case she hasn't bought it yet...

My self control may suck, but at least I can drag the rest of you down into addiction with me!

Had some spare time this evening so, thought I'd purchase torchlight and give it a go. Which I would, but Steam keeps giving me errors on being too busy for the last 30 minutes.
Edit: Eh.. nevermind. Found there is a fix for this. (have to rename the registry.blob and retry. That seems to have fixed it)

will be plus 4 tomorrow. Downloaded and installed the demo today, just fooled a bit with it and it's interesting enough that I'll play quite a bit with it during the holiday break that's coming up... FM

I bought the game tonight, the combination of a low price and good reception in a genre I like was impossible to resist. I've done a few quests now, fun times so far.

I went and played the demo. For some reason I couldn't get into Fate, but this seems to have taken out what I hated about it. I quickly hit dungeon level 5 and had to double check the time just in case. A very well done game considering develop time, but not really considering who is behind it. I have only played the Vanquisher as of now, but I love Ricochet as such a basic skill.

I have only played Torchlight a little bit so far. Do the levels respawn in Torchlight like Fate?

They seem to. I even got a quest for a level I was currently on and had nearly cleared. I went and walked around to saw the creature I needed to kill all by his lonesome. I like how they handle going down in levels compared to how Fate did it though. Plus, the one guy gives you single level quest outside of the main area. EDIT: Went back into the game and entered the first level. It was cleared.

I missed a couple quests in the mines and went back to finish them off. First level remained cleared, but there did seem to be some respawning on levels two and three.

This seems to depend on the difficulty setting as well. If you flip it to the hardest, you will get respawns for the first two levels. On normal difficulty, you won't get creature respawns, but treasure will. Higher difficulty only respawns treasure if the creatures are respawned as well. I played all of the classes to low levels and so far I'm still not fond of how they do respawning. The skill trees aren't really fleshed out since they borrow so heavily from each other to the point some skills seem out of place. Favorite class so far is the ranger type. Working on dual pistol, or single pistol with shield. I have both, but on different difficulty settings. Overall, it's like playing the best of Diablo, Fate, and Mystic and for $9.99 I'm ok with that. I'll assume slotting items will get changed if when they go multipler/MMO. Slotting high end gems into lowbie characters seems a wee bit broken with the current system they have.

Picked it up tonight from D2D for $9.95. Can't wait to dig into it a bit later on.

I like TQ as the better overall game, but Torchlight was made in 11 months and it plays like it at times.

I did a while back. Titan Quest is an in-depth game, Torchlight is beer & pretzels. It feels a lot less like work to me, but it's definitely a bit shallower. Both are worth having. Besides, TQ is multiplayer capable so my wife and I can play co-op. Aside from one minor annoyance. The player saves are encrypted based on your box, and so when I changed OSes my player saves would no longer load. I get why they did it (cheating in online play), but they really freakin' needed the ability to have unencrypted player saves for single-player and co-op that could not go online. So my wife and I never finished the story because we didn't want to go back through the dozens of hours we'd already played through.

I've been seeing respawn at all kinds of different levels in the main dungeon. Level 1, 2, 28...

wow, thanks for the Titan Quest recommendation. I'd had fun with Torchlight but I just spend 90 minutes (which felt like 15 minutes to be honest) fooling around with the demo. Will wait to see if there's not a last minute price drop but will probably buy the gold pack before the holiday sale ends...
Dang, I got way too many games to play now... FM

I liked Titan Quest, but got tired of it before I even finished the first playthrough. Greg hit the nail on the head that Torchlight is Beer and Pretzels - easy, quick, and always good when you're in the mood for 'em.

The blue dragons in the later part of Act III who can perma stun you is the first real moment where I wanted to strangle a game designer. Act IV for those with Immortal Quest is harder as well. There are definitely mobs in there that frustrate me to no end, but I manage to get through them. I go in spurts with playing though and rotate a lot to help break it up.

There is one side quest where the mob 1 hits me, and that pisses me off, but I finally just gave up on that quest. Now, I'm finally starting Chapter 4. |

Probably a lack of resistance of some sort. Also depends on what build you are using as mage types with have to do more dodging versus the melee types. I'm slowly working on getting a mage class built up, but nothing past Act I so far. My highest are a level 40 Spellbreaker and Haruspex(bow) and level 30 Templar and Haruspex(spear).
