Thumbs up GenCon 2010

So, after god knows how many years of my friends bugging me to go, I caved this year, and have my hotel booked.

Were just yapping about it over the weekend, I know there's at least a few people here who attend/have attended, so figured I'd throw a line out and see who may have a chance to meet/nerd it up with a JavaKing come August.

Cool news. Odds are that I should be there again this year. I have the badge, the hole booked, it's just a matter of whether work will permit me to go.

I think I've only missed 2 in the last 14 or so years, so the odds are good.

I might try to go this year for a few days, but it would be more business related.

I'm STILL pissed my copy of that vanished. I left it at a friends for way too long, and nobody knows where the hell it went to. I LOVED that game as a kid.

Hmmm. Realistically how soon does one have to decide to still get reasonable accommodations?

I'm looking at going to Kubla-Con in San Francisco this May, but I've always wanted to make a Gencon.

I live 90 miles from Indy and have never been. I need to go one of these days. My Fortress America is in sad shape, but I still play a lot of Conquest of the Empire. Every year a few 5th graders manage to learn it and we play.

Purchased my tickets tonight and was just looking at hotels. Still some hotels in the area, but I have no desire to pay $225 per night for a hotel room so, seems there are some around the airport.

Anyone have a decent idea of where to stay? I really don't care how close I am and within 15 miles is fine by me since I'm driving from Milwaukee to Indy.

We are going to stay out in Greenwood which is not too far from Indy. I think our room was about $100 per night.

GenCon was a lot more fun in Milwaukee IMO. Which is why I haven't been back since the first year it moved to Indy.

If you are asking what GenCon is, you are not a geek.

It is a large gaming convention. RPGs, LARP, board games, collectible card games, miniatures.. you name it, it's there.

I haven't been there since it moved out of Milwaukee so, I'm looking forward to going this year.

Me and several off-list friends are for certain. We'll be town prolly late wednesday.

So, yes. I suggest a coordinated attack for drinking, gaming, and general hooliganism.

I'd be up for it. I'll be down there solo and must of what I'll be doing is auction/exhibit hall related. Probably do a few small events, but overall I'm pretty free I'm thinking.

Not sure if I'll be there late Wednesday (like waaaay late, 1 AM late) or if I'll be there in the early morning. Haven't decided if I want to leave at 3:00 AM or 8:00 PM

I'm flying in EARLY on Wednesday (seriously, flight leaves Boston at 7 AM, and lands in Indy at 9:45 AM), and don't fly out till around 2 PM on Monday.

Sounds like the easiest thing to do.

Gen Con Indy 2010 –

Probably the best way to book the hotel.

I wouldn't bet on the GenCon resweb site (although you may want to look anyway, someone might have canceled their hotel room something close to the convention center.), but who knows..

Dola: From what I hear, Shula's is expensive, so Champions, or a nearby seafood place may be better.

Just PM me your name, cell, days you are going to be at gencon (or if you are local) and a good time and I'll compile and pm everyone that has responded and send out the master list.

So GenCon and ComicCon are not the same thing, correct?

They are not.

ComiCon is in Sand Diego and is more of a comic book/media convention. It's huge and crazy with lots of stars/media hype and movie and Tv show panels.

GenCon is in Indianapolis and is more of a gaming convention, RPGs, boardgames, card games, miniature games, etc. No TV shows or movie panels and fewer stars/media hype. The biggest "stars" appearing at GenCon this year are Wil Wheaton and Felecia Day (hubba-hubba!).

*chuckles*. It's also worth seeing the ones who cosplay it up, or in some cases, who strange it up.. for example, there is a girl who would come to GenCon in a new costume every year.. made out of duct tape..

Do you really expect her to wear the old costume from last year, if it's made out of duct tape?

I suppose the several years in which I played in and then ran the "Cthulhu Masters Tournament", what we did was a lot more akin to LARPing than table top RPGing. We rarely sat down, had props, some costumes, moved all over the place. It was good times.

Nowadays, my buddies and I essentially hole up in our hotel room and play some RPGs with our group. The quality of the games and other players was far too random to keep registering for games.

We typically wake up, hit the dealer's hall for a couple of hours, eat lunch, head back to the hotel to role-play, eat dinner, more role-playing and perhaps some boardgaming, go to bed and then do the same thing the next day. It's a good time. Little sleep, lots of beer and gaming. I do enjoy it.
