What banished these poor people to Denny's purgatory?

Oh, and I'm going to get my free Grand Slam tomorrow for sure. When the waitress/waiter comes, the conversation will go something like this:

WAITPERSON: What can I get for you?

ME: Free grand slam. Duh.

WAITPERSON: Okay, how would you like your eggs?

ME: I don't want eggs. Can I replace them with extra bacon?

WAITPERSON: Uhmmm...Ok sure. Anything else?

ME: Yeah...this whole pancakes thing. They're so tasty at first, but I get bored halfway through. I'd rather have something I'll enjoy from start to finish. Like, say, bacon.

Denny's closes to remodel; rain checks offered for free breakfast - Las Cruces Sun-News

LAS CRUCES — The Denny's restaurant in Las Cruces has closed for remodeling, but customers can get a rain check for the company's free Grand Slam breakfast offer on Tuesday.

April Estrada, with the restaurant at 740 S. Main St., said the location closed on Monday and the work will take eight to 10 days. No reopening date has yet been set.

Denny's recently announced it is offering a free Grand Slam breakfast from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at its locations in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Since the Las Cruces eatery will be closed, Estrada said someone with the restaurant will hand out rain checks to people who come by and request one between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. The rain checks can then be used to order a free Grand Slam breakfast once the Las Cruces location reopens.

Estrada said the remodeling job will give the place a new look.

"They are taking everything out," she said. "They are leaving the structure in place, but they will be changing things. It'll no longer have a counter."

Denny's reports that the Grand Slam Breakfast includes two pancakes, two eggs, two links of sausage and two strips of bacon and it sells more than 12.5 million Grand Slams a year.

Baker is the only town within about 40 miles of it in either direction. It is on I-15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas and boasts the World's Largest Thermometer (which might even be in the Denny's parking lot). I would imagine that those Southern Californians on the board who have driven from LA to Vegas have stopped in Baker at some point.

What are the odds of this not going drastically worse than the Papa John's cheap pizza giveaway last year?

Baker is nice, but I much prefer Wasco, or Kettleman City.

If I were going to eat breakfast at Denny's, it certainly wouldn't be on a day I expect will see them crowded to the max with people expecting free food.

Good point....the Denny's in my vicinity is full of freaks on a 'normal' day, I would love to see what kind of clusterfuck that place turns into tomorrow.

So my mom gets all excited to tell me about this.

My response? Not on your life. Wouldn't be caught dead near a Denny's tomorrow. She doesn't understand why. Wants me to ask Dad if he'll take her there for breakfast tomorrow. I laugh and tell her, okay, sure, but I guarantee he'll say exactly the same thing, and for exactly the same reason.

I ask him. His response? "Not on your life. I wouldn't be caught dead near a Denny's tomorrow."

My mom appears to be one of those for whom "free" trumps "sensical."

+1. The extra time I would be there this morning isn't worth the cost to me. Not to mention that Denny's food is never that good.

Had a friend who works in downtown KC just call me. There's a Denny's near downtown. He said it appeared every single homeless person in downtown KC was at Denny's and there was a line out the door. The aroma must be fantastic......bacon grease and body odor all rolled up into one.

Oh geez- I know that one. It's on Broadway, just south of the 70/35 interchange, around 14th street. We occasionally would have team meetings there in KC.

The only one of these that is worth going to is Ben and Jerry's free cone day. Because they can get you your cone so quickly, you tend to only be in line for 10 minutes or so.

The only time I've ever been in on something like this is when Dunkin Donuts gave out a free iced coffee last summer. We were walking past one after lunch and there was a big sign outside advertising it, with no one inside.

Having formerly worked at a Denny's during my high school years, I can honestly say that you really aren't missing anything.

In fact, you're probably better off not going - and I'm not necessairly talking about the calories/fat content either.

The nearest Denny's to here is up the road about a half hour in Commerce, GA (home of a giant outlet mall & Atlanta Dragway) and I've never seen more than a handful of people in it. Denny's are relatively few & far between here as Waffle House has that market pretty much cornered.

On the contrary. I have......

-A pro-torture Democrat in the Oval Office.

-A Mizzou basketball team that is 18-4.

-MLB 09: The Show coming soon.

It doesn't get any better than that. I'm happier than an Arkansas whore sleeping with her cousin!

Denny's slammed by breakfast giveaway - CNN.com

Quote:
(CNN) -- Denny's restaurants across North America were jammed Tuesday with patrons hungry to take advantage of the restaurant chain's Grand Slam breakfast giveaway.

Denny's announced in a commercial Sunday during the Super Bowl that it would give away its signature breakfast from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. local time Tuesday at all its restaurants in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

Media outlets reported customers lined up outside the doors of many of Denny's 1,500 locations.

Some patrons were still wearing their pajamas and slippers, and strangers were crowding together into booths, CNN affiliate KSL-TV in Salt Lake City, Utah, reported.

"You couldn't beat it. I mean it was a beautiful, beautiful breakfast. It was fit for a queen or a king," diner Annah Shoffner told CNN affiliate WNCN-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"To do this is amazing and not something you hear of every day, especially in today's economy -- that we're getting something free," Debbie Brugger of Essex Junction, Vermont, anticipating a hearty breakfast at a Denny's in Burlington, told CNN affiliate WCAX-TV.

A college student who identified himself as DeShawn told CNN affiliate KFSN-TV in Fresno, California, that he came out for the free breakfast "to do better in class -- brain food, you know?"

A manager at a Denny's in Raleigh, North Carolina, called the promotion a little "economic stimulus" for the average hardworking person, CNN affiliate WTVD-TV reported.

"A lot of restaurants in the community have been going out of business, and we're aggressively going after the business," Eddie Rice, owner of a Denny's in Peoria, Illinois, told CNN affiliate WEEK-TV.

Rice said he had 2,400 eggs ready to cook at the start of the day.

Waitress Terri Gibson told CNN affiliate WMFD-TV that her restaurant in Mansfield, Ohio, was busy but everything was going smoothly and no one was complaining.

The company said it was expecting an additional 2 million customers to turn out for the promotion.

"This free offer is our way of reacquainting America with Denny's real breakfast and with the Denny's brand," Chief Executive Nelson Marchioli said in a statement.

The Grand Slam breakfast consists of two pancakes, two eggs, two strips of bacon and two sausage links. It weighs in at 44 grams of fat, 56 carbohydrates and 770 calories, according to CNN affiliate KETV in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Grand Slam started as a baseball-related promotion in Atlanta, Georgia, in the mid-1970s and has been served chainwide since 1977. Its normal price varies by market but averages around $5.99. Denny's said it sells 12.5 million Grand Slams a year.

I understand there was some trouble at one Denny's in the LA area. Apparently a man was fatally shot by police at he burst though the doors. The following exchange between the deceased and his companion was overheard...

Quote:
Det. Thorn: It's people. Grand Slams are made out of people. They're making our food out of people. Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle for food. You've gotta tell them. You've gotta tell them!
Hatcher: I promise, Tiger. I promise. I'll tell the exchange.
Det. Thorn: You tell everybody. Listen to me, Hatcher. You've gotta tell them! Grand Slams are people! We've gotta stop them somehow!
