Germany to finish paying WWI reparations this week

I had no idea that these were still being collected:

What's interesting is I remember hearing all kinds of things about the WWI reparations in school because of their later connection to Hitler, and I even remember reading that he quit paying them, but I had no idea the country ever resumed those payments after his death.

And tying back into the original point, I don't ever remember reading whether Germany was assessed reparations following WWII.

They should have never had to pay them in the first place.

I hope they make sure to get a receipt and check their bank account next month to make sure they're still not being charged.

Going back to history class...

1. Serbs kill Austrian/Hungarian duke
2. Austria-Hungaria declares war on Serbia
3. Russia declares war on Austria-Hungaria (via pact w/Serbia)
4. Germany declares war on Russia (via pact w/Austria-Hungaria)
5. France and Great Britain declare war on Germany (via pact w/Russia)

Did I get the formalities right here?

The only thing I'd add is that all of the major powers had been planning for war for years. Part of that planning was mobilization schedules that demanded early mass mobilization in order to be ready if the other guys mass mobilized. Once all those troops got moving towards the fronts there was no stopping a war that everyone thought was inevitable.

Delayed chuckle. I think it was like 2003. I finished paying off a student loan. I owed about 80 bucks but they withdrew a full 250 dollar payment. Took me like 3 weeks to get the balance back. Assholes.

My understanding is that they were.

In fact, I believe many Germany corporations (such as BMW) are still paying due to their use of workers from the concentration camps.

Fascinating. Had never heard that.

Maybe that explains why I can't afford a BMW.

I was thinking they did have to pay something called "Third Reich Reparations" to Jews and Third Reich victims. Not sure.

From what I've been able to find through Google, reparations for the 2nd World War were paid mostly by stripping Germany of their industry. They dismantled factories and shipped the machinery to the allies. According to HowStuffWorks (HowStuffWorks "War Reparations - After World War II", the payments to the west ended in 1949.

Some info in wikipedia as well: Effects of World War II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lesson learned, always go for the lump sum payment.

Looking through history I find it ridiculously amazing that France and Britain both still exist as sovereign nations. They should have been taken into others so many times its just nuts.

6. Austria-Hungary invades Serbia (in retaliation for killing the duke)
7. Germany invades Belgium and Luxembourg

That's where things went downhill and fast.

Actually the payments come from a trust fund for reparations to those workers. My little sister's first job (at the German bank for which she still works) included handling calls/questions from those receiving the payments in the late 1980's. Getting a 'Where's my check?' call from an old woman who had been at Treblinka definitely puts life in perspective.
