Phone scam or did I just let someone die?

Had a message on the answering machine this morning. It was a digital voice (like the old C-64 SAM) that said please help then had a string of numbers which I'm assuming was a phone. The first 3 were 603 which is New Hampshire...

I have no intention of calling, because my gut instinct tells me scam, but I haven't heard of this type before.

Either that or someone pulled a Cellular and called me and now they are dead...

It's a scam, but I'd still report it either way.

For items like this, who do you actually report it to?

I just wanted to call you a bastard, so I selected option 2.

How could you just let Stephen Hawking die like that?

I'm not sure. Maybe just a basic report at the local police station.

i would file this under "things that i should just disregard completely that will otherwise result in me inconveniencing myself to fill out a report at the police station". you go to the police everytime you get a weird phone call? a month ago i got several weird phone calls in a row from an old lady who was asking me for help. i told her she had the wrong number but she kept calling. i then had to use my man voice to tell her to stop calling then i blocked her # from being put through. i then went on about my business.

I'm just thinking that you either want to report the scammers or file a report on the very small chance that someone does need help. I don't think it's that much effort, but if you're as busy as Anthony, then I understand.

not that i'm tremendously busy, its just i don't think i should have to inconvenience myself just cuz i was unlucky enough to answer the phone. i normally don't pick up the phone if i don't recognize the caller on caller id. put it this way - if the person was in serious trouble then all they have to do is dial 911 themselves, it couldn't be any easier than dialing those 3 #'s if you have a serious issue.

Try googling the number left and see if there's a report of it online already?

Why would someone call anything other than 911 if they needed help? Even if they were dying, what good would a report in a local police station 2,000 miles away do? It'd just be filed away in the "reports filed by people with nothing better to do than file reports" file, and never looked at again.

Scam, read about these all the time. You dial a code that gives them access to charge to your phone account. Or something along those lines.

Look, it's not a big deal to me. I just thought that since he took the time to post about it, he was concerned that doing nothing wouldn't be right. If filing the report would ease his concerns, I don't see what's wrong with it.

Great... she lost her voice and now she is calling me. Or it really is Stephen Hawking.

I was aware this was a scam and my 'did I let someone die' comment was in jest. I just haven't had a scam of this variety and found it mildly interesting. I've had prison calls, calls saying my bank account was compromised and false charities, but I haven't had a digital voice asking for help one yet.

Guess this person really needs help since they called back again this morning.

Then we had a call from someone saying 'Lucky I opened the box because it has your jackets and boots. Bye'

Weird f'n calls...
