TMZ Sports: Coming Soon

OH crap:

hxxp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/22/tmz-sports-coming-soon-re_n_400404.html

Talk about a can of worms. Pro athletes are about to get exposed. These guys best stop getting married. I wonder what they will find out about guys like Jordan, Barkley, etc, if they really start digging. This is extremely disconcerting to me as I'd just rather not know what these guys are doing.

SportsDigs already had this two weeks ago, and SportsDigs exposed SportsDigs two weeks before SportsDigs launched.

Jordan and Barkley are apparently the two who have been fingered as the "most responsible" by journalists for "leading Tiger astray"

Heh. I guess what I meant was that if a site such as TMZ really dedicated it's money and resources to uncovering indiscretions I'm sure there would be people ready to come out of the woods and share. If they really dig, I'm sure they'd find some goods on anybody they so choose, including stars of the past like Jordan and Barkley, guys that were on the prowl (so to speak) prior to the internet. Basically, we only hear about the really bad things now. This site will focus on and exploit everything. Or, ya know, maybe not, and stuff.

Ugh. I feel sorry for kids nowadays. In the last 10-15 years sports has changed so dramatically, it's almost unrecognizable from what I grew up with. As a kid sports coverage was 90% (random stat because this is the internet) about the events on the field. Now it's almost the opposite, with finances, PEDs, and off-field issues becoming the focal point. This TMZSports thing is just going to be gasoline on the fire at this point.

Um... how is this any different than TMZ now, near as I can tell? Sorry, I'm not all that familiar with them, but aren't they pretty much the source for celebrity gossip these days as I've seen them cited by actual news sites.

If a sports figure is a big enough celebrity, they end up there now, right? What now? Are they sending investigative people to tell us about Jack Cust's mistress? Or telling us about Theo Ratliff's snuff film or Matt Turk's youthful indiscretion into gay porn (yes, I just pulled names out of a hat and no, as far as I know, none of those players have done any of those things)?

I wish people would stop paying attention to these things so I can stop hearing about them instead of trifling stuff like, you know, actual news.

As long as they don't find out anything bad about Call Ripken, Jr. I don't care. I need him to stay what we think he is.

You do realize now that when someone puts in Googles "Matt Turk" and "gay porn", your post likely jumps to the top? Way to start rumors, SI!

And we're talking about TMZ so we've come full circle.

(I am not going to Google anything with the words "gay porn", but if someone wants to check, I guess I'd be curious if that's true in a few days once Google has checked us out.)

Hah well the top result right now is from a site called "gaystarinterviews" where a guy named Matt interviews a guy named Turk, generating the following text:

"Matt: Turk, thanks for taking the time to do this interview for us." and apparently gay porn comes up.

The #2 hit is a site called "Olbermann Watch" that documents his show on MSNBC.

Everything after that looks to be spam. Lets see if we climb the rankings in a few days!

I think the level of attention they put towards athletes is much lower than actors/musicians/pop culture toolbags but yes, when a big enough story comes up, they have someone covering it. Now they're going to have a whole team of investigators or whatever you want to call them targeting athletes exclusively. So to answer your questions....yes, probably.

edit: Think of it along the lines of how ESPN has been launching their regional sites devoted to coverage of Boston, Chicago, LA, Dallas teams. They covered those teams before, but now they do it more in-depth and with a more narrow focus.

Not yet though "Matt Turk" and "gay porn" - Google Search give it a couple weeks.
