Run And Gun: A Race to the Top - TCY/FOF dynasty

This dynasty will follow the “5 Great Men” convention, following 5 top players from the college ranks to the pros. In this case though, all 5 will be quarterbacks, as when I was messing around with TCY I found a particularly dominant QB class and it should be fun to see which of them turns out the best.

If there's enough interest in it, I had the idea that after each season we would vote or just reach a consensus about which player had the best season, and give them a point for it, at the end we could record which had the best college and pro careers, and which were the best in various categories, best playoff QB, or whatever else people want to track.

Will our five great players compete for years in the NFL? Will we see Hall of Famers here? Or will some of them end up in obscurity, injured and forgotten. We'll see...

Intro – Our Players

The 2004 college recruit class is dominated by quarterbacks in a way that is rare and, for the schools that want to sign them, a huge opportunity. Five of the top nine players in the country are quarterbacks, including the top two rated players overall. The big schools are scrambling to get their share of this quarterback motherlode, and of course trying to figure out which will fit best into their system. The young men involved are entering into a stressful and chaotic time in their lives, deluged by visits and phone calls, and pulled in every direction by coaches, recruiters, and alumni. Who are the young men with such bright athletic futures ahead of them?

Marc Horn – Watchung Hills Regional HS, Warren, NJ

Marc is the top rated recruit out of high school this year. He is 5'11” and 188 pounds, a pretty smart kid who wants to major in Differential Equations. The word is that he's very interested in a prestige school and this shouldn't be a problem as he's mobbed by them right now. Our scout loves him, and rates him 91/100 with 100% athletic prep. He likes to run and throws excellent medium range passes. He's been lighting up the high school field this year with almost 1900 yards in four games.

Matt Cancilla – Bay High School, Bay St. Louis, MS

Matt is the second rated recruit overall this year. He's six feet tall and 191 pounds, getting by in school but that's obviously not his strong point. He has declared an interest for a prestige school and wants to stay somewhat close to home, so the SEC schools will be all over him. Our scout for him is pretty bad and is not reliable, but even he is very impressed and reports that Matt likes to throw the ball long. He's been throwing and running well so far in high school ball.

Shane Brandon – Jefferson High School, Port Arthur, TX

Shane is the 6th rated overall recruit this year, and has very good size at 6'3” and 194 pounds. He's a pretty good student and is interested in a Business degree. Like the others, he wants a prestige school and will get one, but some have said that he wants to get away from home and might be willing to travel a long way. Our terrible scout is impressed by his touch passing especially, but doesn't see him as as consistent as the others.

Lamar Lies – Platte Valley High School, Kersey, CO

Lamar is the 7th overall recruit in the country, and is 6'1” and 209 pounds. He's a very good student and is interested in Medicine if his athletic career doesn't pan out. He doesn't seem as interested in prestige as the other players, but wants a college that's close to home and has a solid academic program. Our scout for the area is poor but is impressed by his medium passing and his running ability.

Omar Smith – Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, MN

Omar is the 9th overall recruit in the nation, and is 5'11” and 186 pounds. He's an average student interested in a math degree. Some have complained about his lousy attitude but it's hoped he'll straighten that out once he's getting the regimen of big college football. He's looking at the big names and wants a name school for sure, but one that's not too far away. Our scout likes him a lot and rates him 83/100 with good skills in timing receivers and very good athletic prep (which all our players have.) Omar hasn't played well so far this year, maybe because of his attitude problem.

Recruiting – Two Weeks Into the Season

Marc Horn – Watchung Hills Regional HS, Warren, NJ

After two weeks Marc has attracted a lot of interest, as you would expect. So far he's shown the most interest in Ohio State, and has agreed to visit there, as they have the prestige he wants. He has offers in from Oklahoma and Washington as well. He's tearing teams apart so far this year, averaging more than 400 yards passing a game.

Matt Cancilla – Bay High School, Bay St. Louis, MS

Amazingly Matt hasn't had a single call! I'm not sure why the 2nd best player in the country wouldn't be getting any notice but he continues to play solidly but not great on the field.

Shane Brandon – Jefferson High School, Port Arthur, TX

Shane has been contacted by Washington State and is considering their scholarship offer.

Lamar Lies – Platte Valley High School, Kersey, CO

Lamar has had a lot of recruiters swarming him, currently he is visiting Michigan and considering offers from Georgia, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Omar Smith – Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, MN

Omar has offers from Texas A&M and Virginia and is waiting for more.

Recruiting – Four Weeks Into the Season

Marc Horn – Watchung Hills Regional HS, Warren, NJ

Marc is now visiting Michigan and Ohio State, though it seems that Michigan may be a better fit for him. He has offers from Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Matt Cancilla – Bay High School, Bay St. Louis, MS

Matt has scholarship offers from Georgia and Nebraska at this point.

Shane Brandon – Jefferson High School, Port Arthur, TX

Shane is still keeping his options open, considering offers from Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, and Washington State, but no visits yet.

Lamar Lies – Platte Valley High School, Kersey, CO

Lamar is being kept busy, with visits to Michigan, Ohio State, and USC at this point. He has offers from Georgia, Iowa, Texas and Wisconsin as well.

Omar Smith – Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, MN

Omar isn't visiting anywhere yet, he's weighing offers from Boise State, Kansas State, Miami, Texas A&M, TCU, and Virginia.

Recruiting – Six Weeks Into the Season

Marc Horn – Watchung Hills Regional HS, Warren, NJ

Marc committed to Florida State in Week 6. In 9 HS games this year he threw for 4110 yards and 21 touchdowns. Very nice!

Matt Cancilla – Bay High School, Bay St. Louis, MS

Matt is visiting Georgia and Miami and considering offers from Nebraska and NC State. Georgia might be a good fit for him.

Shane Brandon – Jefferson High School, Port Arthur, TX

Shane is visiting California and Washington State, obviously wanting to get far away from home. He has offers from Florida, Tennessee, and Texas A&M. Washington State has the better prestige but Cal has a hugely better academic program.

Lamar Lies – Platte Valley High School, Kersey, CO

Lamar made his commitment to Michigan in Week 5.

Omar Smith – Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, MN

Omar is only visiting Miami. Could the Hurricanes possibly pull down two of our players? He has many offers including Florida, Kansas State, and Texas A&M.

Recruiting – Final

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Matt committed to Nebraska in Week 7, surprising quite a few.

Shane Brandon – Tennessee Volunteers

Shane committed to Tennessee in Week 8. (Go Vols!)

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Omar surprised many by deciding to commit to Boise State in Week 9. They were certainly glad to get him.

Texas finished their undefeated season in 2004 by beating LSU by a touchdown to win the national championship. Top 10 preseason teams for this year are:

Texas – Miami – USC – Michigan – LSU – Florida – Oklahoma – Florida State – Penn State - Tennessee

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Florida State really stumbled last year, finishing at 5-6, and they are hoping to turn that around this year. Marc will redshirt this year, our scout rates him at 28/86.

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska finished 9-3 last year, second in the B12-North, but got smacked around in the Sun Bowl by Oregon State. Matt will redshirt this season, our scout rates him as 43/81.

Shane Brandon – Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee went 11-2 on the year and won the Sugar Bowl. Shane is rated 26/85 and surprisingly will play this season, Tennessee doesn't have their usual depth at quarterback and in fact only have three on the roster. It looks like junior Richie Douglas will start ahead of Shane.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

Michigan finished 9-3 last year. Lamar will redshirt this year, our scout rates him at 28/83.

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Boise State won the WAC last year and went undefeated in conference play. Omar is being redshirted for this season. His initial rating by our scout is 28/86, he'll need some development time.

2005 Season End

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles Florida State improved slightly to 6-6 this year but they have a good ways to go.

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers Nebraska finished 8-4 on the year and beat Boston College in a minor bowl.

Shane Brandon – Tennessee Volunteers Tennessee stumbled to an 8-4 finish and beat up Michigan State in a minor bowl. As expected Richie Douglas was the starter and played well, but Shane got some backup time and impressed some with his play, he started one game and played in 6, for a total of 30-58 for 386 yards, as well as a touchdown and an interception.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines Lamar didn't play but Michigan powered its way to an 11-1 season and beat up Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, barely being denied a national championship which instead went to Florida.

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos Boise State dominated everyone they played this year and went undefeated at 12-0. Unfortunately they didn't play anyone good and were relegated to a backwater bowl where they beat Miami of Ohio.

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Marc has really developed well after a redshirt year of weights and practice. He's put on a lot of weight and is up to 216 pounds. Our scout rates him at 53-86 at the start of the year and he is the best quarterback Florida State has, it looks like he will start. They have a couple of decent receivers but not much depth at that position, and Marc loves to throw the ball deep, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Matt is really struggling in school and only has a 1.78 GPA so far. Our scout rates him at 39-82, a bit lower than before, but still a lot of upside. He will be competing with Jake Sands for the starting spot, Jake's a bit better in current rating but is a senior.

Shane Brandon – Tennessee Volunteers

Shane improved some last year but still needs more playing time, he's scouted at 33-85. Unfortunately Richie Douglas will still be playing ahead of him and looks very good, so he will be relegated to backup duty again.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

Lamar still looks about the same, talent wise, at 28-83 but he is facing some very harsh competition at Michigan and certainly won't start this year. Last year's excellent starter Paul McDaniel will be returning, and behind him is Ernest Bonilla. Lamar might get a shot in two years if he develops some.

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Omar will be starting for the Broncos this year, he is head and shoulders above everyone else at the position. He's rated 54-86 by our scout, struggling in class but very happy with his college choice.

2006 Season End

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Marc was the starter for the Seminoles and helped them turn their fortunes around after two miserable seasons, though their excellent running backs helped even more. He finished with a 58.7% completion percentage, throwing for 2631 yards with 18 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. His excellent grades led to him being named to the ACC's All-Academic team. Florida State finished 8-4 and second in the ACC, but lost to Michigan in their bowl game.

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska struggled this year and finished 7-5, third in the Big 12. They beat Hawaii in a minor bowl game. Matt was given the starting nod after all and looked pretty good, completing 54.9% of his passes for 2254 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He's still struggling in school and barely avoided failing out this year.

Shane Brandon – Tennessee Volunteers

As expected, Richie Douglas started for the Vols, and had a hell of a year, leading them to 12-1 and winning the national championship. He even came 5 votes away from winning the Heisman Trophy. Shane barely played this year, he ended up 5 for 7 on the year for 75 yards.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

Michigan went 9-3 on the year and pounded Florida State in the Sun Bowl. Lamar only saw the field a little, but was impressive, completing 21 of 28 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns, with one interception.

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Boise State had no trouble topping the WAC, as usual, but couldn't match their undefeated record of last year, instead they finished 10-2 and lost to Minnesota in a minor bowl. Omar led the way, and had the best stats of any of our players this year, completing 63% of his passes for 2638 yards, 27 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions. His sharp throwing led to him being named 2nd Team WAC quarterback!

I wondered the same thing. The 1st Team QB was Hawaii's Skip Bowser - 63.5%, 3302 yards, 24 touchdowns, 8 interceptions.

Good Stuff here, I have to think at this point Smith and Brandon project as the two best NFL prospects. Brandon looks like the NFL prototype and Smith is very athletic..

I see both Horn and Lies struggling at the next level due to their size...time will tell.

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Marc has really come into his own, skill wise, after a solid starting year. Our scout rates him at 88/88, and he will certainly start again for the Seminoles. The only worry is that his receivers are even worse than last year, though the team's tight ends are solid.

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Our scouts rate Matt as 69/81 and he will start again this year for Nebraska. His grades are still a major concern as he has a 1.43 GPA and had three D- grades last year.

Shane Brandon – Tennessee Volunteers

Richie Douglas has graduated, so it's time for Shane to make his move to starter. He looks to be the best option, currently scouted at 41/67, but Blake Dougherty isn't too far behind him.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

Lamar will have to wait another year, as excellent QB Ernest Bonilla will start this year for the Wolverines. Lamar has a lot of potential but is actually competing with two other players around his level for the backup spot. He is currently scouted at 31/83.

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Omar is ready for another starting year for the team, and is currently rated at 82/85.

2007 Season End

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Florida State took a big step backward this year, stumbling to a disappointing 4-7 finish. With a pretty poor team around him, Marc had a much worse year than last year, completing only 52.8% of his passes for 2093 yards with 9 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. FSU really needs some quality wide receivers and a better offensive line to protect him. Marc did repeat as a member of the ACC All-Academic team though.

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska remained consistent at 9-3 on the year, second in the Big 12 North. Unfortunately they were blown out by Purdue in their bowl game to end the year on a sour note. Matt was a big part of their success, taking a big step forward this season, completing 61% of his passes for 3184 yards and 35 touchdowns against only 6 interceptions. He was named the Big 12's second team QB! (First team was Sean Boyer of Texas, an interesting player, he's known for his laser-like accuracy, last year he had a 72.7% completion rating and this year he threw 27 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.)

Shane Brandon – Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee finished 8-4 this year, a big dropoff from last season, and dispatched Tulane in their bowl game. Shane played pretty well as a starter but his season ended in his 9th game with a torn biceps muscle. He threw for 2034 yards with 16 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

It was painful for Lamar this year, he had to sit on the sidelines and watch Ernest Bonilla rip other teams apart and lead Michigan to the championship game, where unfortunately they lost to Texas. Ernest won the Heisman Trophy as well, passing for 3780 yards and an incredible 47 touchdowns. Lamar barely saw the field, completing 14 passes out of 23 for 178 yards with one interception.

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Boise State is used to success, and continued it this year, going 11-1 and winning the WAC, then routing Toledo in their bowl game. The Broncos focused more on the running game this year and Omar's touchdown numbers suffered, but he was as sharp as ever, completing 62% of his passes for 2763 yards with 15 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He was named the WAC's MVP this year, along with Top Offensive Player and 1st team QB!

(I'm going to export the drafts from this year on into the FOF league we'll be using for our players, so they might get a chance to compete against rivals like Ernest Bonilla. I'll keep you updated.)

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Marc is scouted at 94/94 and ready to start again this year. Unfortunately he and the team suffered a blow when their best (and really only) wide receiver Irv Coker was academically suspended for the year. Their best one now is scouted 30/41 and beyond that it's just walk-ons. Where's a Rudy when you need one?

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Matt is scouted 82/82 and ready to start. He improved his grades slightly last year but is still well below a 2.0 GPA.

Shane Brandon – Tennessee Volunteers

Shane is entering his senior year and will start again for Tennessee, he is scouted at 48/67.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

Michigan needs to choose a quarterback and it looks like Lamar will be it. He's definitely got the most potential, scouted at 32/83, but he doesn't look that great right now.

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Omar is once again ready to go, scouted at 82/85. After his conference MVP season last year he's hoping to be able to take it to the next level and get some national recognition.

2008 Season End

The Heisman Trophy winner was Omar Rieke, USC's excellent QB, who happened to be the 6th rated QB in the year these guys were picked and barely missed being included. Obviously there was quite a QB class that year!

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Florida State had a 6-6 year, improved from last year but some are starting to wonder whether the school will ever recover it's glorious reputation. Unfortunately Marc suffered a knee injury that cost him some starts and he managed to start only 7 games this season, and was, to be honest, terrible. His final stats were a 47.2% completion rate, 875 yards passing, and two touchdowns against 11 interceptions. With no receivers to throw to and his bad performance, backup QB Deon Evans got quite a bit of playing time and played a little better. Marc really needs to show the team something next year or he's going to look like something of a bust.

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska fell apart this year and finished with a 4-7 record, resulting in their coach being fired and hand-wringing by everyone involved with the team. Matt started seven games before he injured his leg and was lost for the season. He would have had a good year, as in only seven games he completed 55.7% of his passes for 1499 yards with twelve touchdowns and four interceptions.

Shane Brandon – Tennessee Volunteers

To continue the trend, Tennessee plunged to 4-7, a completely unacceptable performance by a recent national championship team. Shane began the year as the starter but soon started sharing the load with backup Blake Dougherty. Neither of them were very effective this year though. He completed 53.5 percent of his passes for only 1060 yards, with 5 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Many were left wondering, as Shane's college career ended, whether he had been overrated to begin with or whether last year's leg injury left lasting damage. In any case, he didn't leave much of a mark at Tennessee aside from some solid play in 2007.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

Michigan finished 8-4 this year, capped by a Cotton Bowl loss to Virginia. Lamar was given the starting job and never looked back, completing 58.3% of his passes for 3085 yards with 29 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He was named to the Big 10's All-Academic team. He survived an incredible 54 sacks this year, one of the top 5 highest rates in the league.

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Boise State had a disappointing year by their standards, slipping to 9-3 and finishing second in the WAC to Nevada. Omar showed no signs of slipping though, improving on his last season with 2877 yards, 20 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He was named the WAC MVP, Top Offensive Player and 1st Team QB for the second year in a row.

2009 Season Start

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Marc is scouted at 94/94 to start the season but he really needs to improve on last year's terrible performance and finish out his college career in style.

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Matt is scouted at 90/90 and is hoping to recover from his injury and have a solid senior year.

Shane Brandon –

Shane went to the NFL combine and didn't impress anyone, he looks like a very mediocre QB who would need a lot of preparation to get to the NFL level. He wasn't drafted by any team and despite his best efforts, wasn't picked up by anyone in the 2009 season.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

Lamar is scouted at 54/100 and is hoping to continue his good play and make a good impression on the NFL scouts who are already surrounding him.

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Omar is scouted 82/85 and wants to continue his excellent play this year and make a name for himself.

2009 Season End

Marc Horn – Florida State Seminoles

Florida State rallied to a 7-5 season and Marc played pretty well as a part of it. He ended up with 2635 yards, 15 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He was named ACC 2nd Team quarterback!

Matt Cancilla – Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska finished at 5-6, another mediocre season. Matt played the entire year but was only average, throwing for 2144 yards with 18 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Shane Brandon –

Shane did not play in the NFL this year.

Lamar Lies – Michigan Wolverines

Michigan finished 10-2 and pounded San Diego State in the Outback Bowl. Lamar had another great year and was considered for the Heisman Trophy, with 3447 yards, 26 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He was named the Big 10's 2nd Team QB!

Omar Smith – Boise State Broncos

Boise State was back to their old pattern this year, 11-1 and winning the WAC. They finished off Akron in a minor bowl game. Omar started in 8 games before he tore a knee ligament and was lost for the rest of the season. He would have had his best season ever, and in 8 games finished with 1912 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. Even injured he was named as the WAC's 2nd Team QB.

I don't think there's any question that Omar Smith had the best college career, putting up good numbers in every year he started, and winning two Conference MVP awards. Matt Cancilla was the best of our players in career college touchdowns and would be ranked second, I think.

I've been thinking about re-starting this dynasty, using a non-NFL players career. I think this would give our guys a much more realistic shot. As it is they're just wasting their lives as eternal backups.

I've decided that I will delete my posts related to the previous NFL experience, and post new ones. Of course this may mean that some players get better or worse when they are re-imported to the draft. We'll see.

To start things off, we have Shane Brandon entering the 2009 NFL Draft.

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Shane entered the NFL draft and was checked out at the combine. He looks good pretty much across the board, though his screen passes aren't great. He looked like the third best QB coming into the draft, though the two ahead of him are substantially better. He's a good option and a lot of teams are looking for quarterbacks this year.

In the end the QBs went 1-2-3 in the draft, with Shane being picked third by the Baltimore Ravens. To me he is not worth a 3rd overall pick and the Ravens may regret this, but we'll see. Shane comes in rated 13/50 by my scout, he is very good in some areas like accuracy but poor in medium and third down passing.

And his performance that year:

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Shane was eased in gently, playing some behind veteran Mitchell Chandler, but spending some time on the inactive list as well. Chandler is a mentor, so it's hoped that he can bring Shane along quicker than otherwise. Shane started three games, and was unimpressive. Overall this year he completed 34 of 70 passes for 261 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

Here's what he looks like after his first year. An up and down player, I think.

How will our players fare as they move towards the NFL?

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc is the second best of our four players, rated at 5.2. He looks marginal for an NFL draft pick, and is the 15th ranked QB. He has nice accuracy and timing ratings but seems to be lacking other intangibles.

Marc was picked by Cleveland with the 10th pick of the third round.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Coming into the draft, Matt is the best of the four entering this year, and he doesn't look terribly impressive. He's the tenth best QB in the draft, and is rated 5.6. He doesn't have the total package but he has a good arm, and should be a good pick.

It turns out there's an early run on QBs and Matt is picked in the first round at the 22nd spot by the Raiders.

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens send Shane to summer league to help develop his skills. He still doesn't look great, but it looks like he'll be the starter this year.

Lamar Lies –

Lamar is rated at 4.3 and won't be drafted this year. He has pretty much bad ratings across the board.

He wasn't drafted.

Omar Smith –

Omar is rated at 4.2 and won't be drafted. He does have a high volatility so if someone gives him a chance (unlikely) he might have a chance at a breakout.

He wasn't drafted.

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Shane played backup this year to journeymen Andre Ward. With the money they're paying him, you'd think they'd want to give him a chance. He improved a bit but is still rated 23/50. This year he did start two games, and was somewhat better, completing 53 of 104 passes for 601 yards, with 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc started the season at #3 for the Browns, but a series of injuries to their other QBs gave him a chance to get a decent amount of playing time. Unfortunately he didn't do much with the chance, in 4 starts he had a 45.6% completion rate, 798 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. Still, he looks like he has a lot of potential.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt got a little backup work this year, he started one game, and completed 19 passes for 174 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. He's got a lot of potential, but he'll need playing time to develop it, and right now he's socked in at #3 in Oakland.

Lamar Lies –

Nothing happened for Lamar this year.

Omar Smith –

Nothing happened for Omar.

The dream is over for Lamar Lies and Omar Smith, they just couldn't cut it at the NFL level.

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Things aren't looking so good for Brandon, as the Ravens signed Tim Riner, a capable QB who's played with several teams. It looks like he's going to wait even longer for his shot, but

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Cleveland had a big quarterback shakeup in the offseason, and as it stands now, Marc looks like the best option they have to start. The ball is in his hands, can he prove himself?

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt remains the #3 option in Oakland's crowded QB situation.

2011 Season End

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

As expected, Tim Riner started all year, though he didn't play very well. Shane was the backup all year and barely got to play, with 2 completions out fo 10 tries, for 7 yards.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc grabbed his chance with both hands this year, playing well and making a name for himself. He started all 16 games, and completed 62.4% of his passes for 3142 yards, with 20 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. The Browns are realizing they got a nice return for their third round pick.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt got some limited playing time this year, completing 19 or 52 passes for 174 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions. He has a good bit of potential but may need another team to reach it.

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Same as last year, Shane will back up Tim Riner. As I said, he was not worth a third overall pick.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

After his performance last year, Marc wants more money than his current $1 million a year salary, and starts a contract holdout.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt has officially moved up to the #2 spot, behind veteran Matt Lawniczak Maybe he'll get some more playing time this way.

2012 Season End

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Shane rode the pine this year and never got to play.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc ended his holdout in the third week of pre-season, with no new contract. I have to admit he's pretty much getting screwed, as he has a cheapo deal through 2013. He started every game this year, though he struggled at times with accuracy. He ended up completing 56.4% of his passes for 3440 yards, with 16 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt never threw a pass this year.

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Shane's skills seem to be withering away, but he still has potential, and remains at the #2 slot in Baltimore.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc finally got paid, with a shiny new 5 year, $42 million contract in the offseason.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt might compete for the starting spot this year, as veteran QB Lawnczak seems to be slipping. But I have a feeling he'll still end up as the backup.

2013 Season End

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Shane played a little this year in the backup role, with 10 of 30 passes completed for 94 yards, and an interception.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc has really come into his full potential at this point, and he played his best year ever this season, completing 63% of his passes for 3876 yards, with 25 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt was finally given the starting spot this year, though a knee injury cost him four games. He wowed Raiders fans with quite a few deep balls, and ended up with great numbers, completing 60.8% of his passes for 3036 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 89 interceptions, including a 430 yard, 3 touchdown game against Indianapolis.

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

No change for Shane, he's still backing up Tim Riner.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc's ready to go as Cleveland's established starter.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt will start again this year.

2014 Season End

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Shane gets to start 5 games this year that Riner missed with an injury. He plays pretty well, though, completing 57.4% of his passes for 1179 yards with four touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc has really developed into a fine quarterback, and he was one of the best in the league this year. He completed 67.3% of his passes for 3671 yards, with 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. This was enough to get the Browns all the way to the AFC championship game, which they lost to Tennessee.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt came back as a starter this year, a fan favorite who likes to throw the deep ball. But no one expected this year's performance. Matt simply exploded, completing 68.5% of his passes for 4334 yards, with 32 touchdowns against only 11 interceptions. This amazing performance was enough for 1st team Pro Bowl QB, and Offensive Player of the Year! He took his team to the playoffs but they lost after winning their wild card game.

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Shane will continue to back up Tim Riner, who is looking better and better (current rating 60/60.)

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc is ready for another year with the Browns.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt started the offseason with a contract holdout, believing that he had earned a new deal with his great year last year. After some wrangling the Raiders gave him a four year, $26 million deal. He's ready to go.

2015 Season End

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Ratings-wise this was Shane's best year ever. He started two games and filled in at some other times for Riner. He ended up with 880 yards, six touchdowns, and 4 interceptions on the year.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc is starting to struggle with knee injuries, he suffered a knee problem three times last season, and again this season he lost three games because of a knee injury. This was a down year across the board for Marc. His percentage was down to 58.1%, yards down to 2622, touchdowns down to 13, and interceptions down to 10. Cleveland again made it to the AFC championship game, only to lose.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt lost three starts due to various injuries, and couldn't keep up the pace of last year, though he played well. He ended up with a 60.6 completion %, 3251 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. His coaches are a bit concerned with such a high interception rate all of a sudden.

There was an interesting matchup in the playoffs where Cleveland played Oakland, our two guys facing off. It ended up as a 20-7 Cleveland win in which Cancilla was out quarterbacked by Horn.

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Ah, the usual ritual for Shane. Sign a new contract with the Ravens, and get ready for a long season of mostly riding the pine.

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

Marc's ready to start again this year. The Browns signed a rookie QB in the sixth round who looks like he has a lot of potential. He's no threat to Marc though'

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt's ready to start again.

2016 Season End

Shane Brandon – Baltimore Ravens

Marc Horn – Cleveland Browns

An elbow injury cost Marc two starts this year, and he had a less than average year. One problem is that Cleveland drafted a top rookie RB at #7 and gave him a lot of carries, they may start to emphasize run over pass a bit more. Marc completed 58% of his passes for 2630 yards, with 10 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt improved on last year in some ways and fell back in others. He ended up completing 57.7% of his passes for 3810 yards, with 23 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Oakland didn't make the playoffs.

Shane Brandon – Buffalo Bills

Shane went into free agency this year, and ended up signing a one year deal with the Buffalo Bills for $1.2 million. This looks like a very good move for him as according to our scout, he's the best QB on their roster. Will he finally get his shot as a starter?

Marc Horn – St. Louis Rams

Marc is also a free agent in the offseason, and he is the top rated free agent quarterback. The Browns felt they wanted to move in another direction. Marc ended up signing with the Rams in what seems to me is a very questionable decision. He got a three year, $10.6 million deal from them, but their quarterback is the legendary Blake Erdahl, who puts up huge numbers every year. Marc just signed his way back into the backup role, especially since in 9 seasons Blake has never missed a start.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt is ready to start again for the Raiders.

2017 Season End

Shane Brandon – Buffalo Bills

Shane was the starter for the Bills, and he had a great year, making the most of the chance that has waited so long in coming. He started all 16 games, and completed 58.4% of his passes for 3909 yards, slinging 33 touchdowns along with 19 interceptions. He took the Bills into the playoffs, winning a game before losing in the AFC title game.

Marc Horn – St. Louis Rams

As expected, Marc never saw the field this year, as Erdahl had another great year.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt had a tremendous season, his best since 2014 when he won the Offensive Player of the Year. This year he came close to those numbers, completing 63.1% of his passes for 4298 yards, with 34 touchdowns (a career high) and 14 interceptions. Matt was named 2nd Team All-Pro for his performance.

Shane Brandon – Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals were impressed by Shane last year and signed him to a two year, $7.5 million deal. It looks like he'll be back to playing backup for them.

Marc Horn – St. Louis Rams

Marc will continue to back up Blake Erdahl.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt is ready to start again for the Raiders.

2018 Season End

Shane Brandon – Arizona Cardinals

Shane threw 8 passes this year as a backup, completing 2 for 28 yards.

Marc Horn – St. Louis Rams

Marc made the field briefly this year, completing 11 of 15 passes for 77 yards.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt had another great year this year, taking his team to the brink of the Super Bowl before losing a close game to the Jets in the AFC title game. He racked up a 67.9 completion %, threw for 4094 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions.

2019 Season Start

Shane Brandon – San Diego Chargers

Shane was cut by the Cardinals, and signed a two year deal with San Diego in the off season.

Marc Horn – St. Louis Rams

Marc will be the backup for the Rams again.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt's great performances lately earned him a fat new contract with the Raiders – three years, $58 million.

2019 Season End

Shane Brandon – San Diego Chargers

Shane is the fourth QB on a Chargers team where all three other QBs are better than him. It was a wild year for Chargers QBs, as they seemed to be trying a kind of platoon system based on who was injured at the time. Shane completed one pass for 19 yards this year.

(Just a note, the Chargers are a great example of how screwed up the AI can be. They have a veteran QB who's been with them forever and has been great, in fact still is great, and still is the starter. Then they also have their backup who is a 4th overall draft pick from 5 or 6 years ago. He's developing and looks great but is waiting. Then, get this, their third backup is a 1st overall pick from two years ago!! What the hell are they thinking??)

Marc Horn – St. Louis Rams

Marc didn't see the field this year.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt took his team to a 15-1 regular season and a painful Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay this season. He completed 64.3% of his passes for 4147 yards, with 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He's really developed into a money quarterback.

Shane Brandon – San Diego Chargers

Shane is ready to start another backup season.

Marc Horn – Pittsburgh Steelers

Marc was signed to a two year deal by Pittsburgh as their backup.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt has, unbelievably, started a contract holdout. This is strange because he's probably one of the top 5 paid QBs already.

2020 Season End

Shane Brandon – San Diego Chargers

Shane didn't see the field this year.

Marc Horn – Pittsburgh Steelers

Marc got to start three games this year as a backup to Ernie Roberts. He didn't play particularly well, with a 51% completion %, 472 yards, 4 touchdowns, and three interceptions, but these were the first games he had started in four seasons.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt ended his holdout at the end of pre-season, and went on to have a good year. He completed 67.1% of his passes for 3926 yards, with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He suffered a knee injury at the end of the season which cost him one start.

Shane Brandon – San Diego Chargers

Shane will be the #4 again this year for the Chargers.

Marc Horn – Pittsburgh Steelers

Marc will backup Ernie Roberts again this year.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt will remain the starter for the Raiders.

2021 Season End

Shane Brandon – San Diego Chargers

Shane didn't play this year. Surprise, surprise.

Marc Horn – Pittsburgh Steelers

Marc had a little backup work this season, starting one game and playing in four. He ended up with 408 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt had another excellent year, throwing for 4005 yards, with 24 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He isn't showing any sign of slowing down. In fact, he's the overall career leader in passer rating and yards per pass attempt.

2022 Season Start

Our players are all veterans now but none of them retire this year.

Shane Brandon – Minnesota Vikings

Shane finally gets out of San Diego by signing a two year, $6.7 million deal with the Vikings. It's a good spot because they have a lot of young players, and he may have the chance to get some playing time, or at least be the primary backup.

Marc Horn – Pittsburgh Steelers

No change for Marc. His skills are definitely slipping but he's still a capable backup.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt gets an incredible 3 year, $96 million deal in the offseason. Wow!

2022 Season End

Shane Brandon – Cleveland Browns

Shane was released by the Vikings before the season started, and was picked up by the Browns. He started the first two games of the year and was the backup the rest of the time, ending up with 429 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

Marc Horn – Pittsburgh Steelers

Marc started two games this year, and ended up with 451 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Pittsburgh went 12-4 on the year, then plowed through the playoffs, and won the Super Bowl by shutting out the Giants 24-0! One of our players has the first championship ring!j

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

An elbow injury kept Matt out of the lineup for two games, but otherwise he had his normal strong year, completing 59% of his passes for 3217 yards, with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Shane Brandon –

Shane decided to call it a career and retired. He never really got traction in his NFL career, and was a backup for all but one shining season.

Here are his career stats:

Marc Horn – Baltimore Ravens

Marc was released by the Browns and signed by Baltimore. He seems to be in the final, new-team-every-year phase of his career.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt is ready to go for another year.

2023 Season End

Marc Horn –

Marc was released by the Steelers in Week 1 and remained a free agent the rest of the year.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt threw the ball well this year but had to consider it an off-year, accuracy wise. He completed 57.5% of his passes for 3764 yards, with 21 touchdowns, but 21 interceptions. The team's management isn't sure if the 14 year vet is losing his touch or just had a fluke year with interceptions.

Marc Horn –

Marc decided to retire after a whole season passed without him being signed. He had a nice career in Cleveland but was never able to regain a starter's job after that.

His career stats:

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt is ready for another year with the Raiders.

2024 Season End

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt started the year off well with a good first game, but then suffered a major foot injury in week 2. He missed several weeks, and then the injury refused to fully heal. The Raiders had to move him to backup QB, though he played in all of the rest of the games. It was truly disappointing for Matt. He ended up with only 118 pass attempts on the year, 80 completions for 1047 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt has recovered from his injury and is ready to start again, in his 16th season.

2025 Season End

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt started every game this year, but it was obvious that the problems he had in 2022 are here to stay. He put up the yardage but really wasn't nearly as sharp as he was in his glory years. He completed a meager 51% of his passes, a career low, passed for 3555 yards, with 15 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.

2026 Season Start

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Despite much speculation that he would retire after last season, Matt came back for another year.

2026 Season End

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

Matt suffered several minor injuries this year, but started 13 games despite them. He played a little better than last year but nothing like his best years. He completed 53.3% of his passes for 2870 yards, with 15 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

2027 Season Start

Matt Cancilla – Oakland Raiders

It didn't surprise anyone when Matt announced his retirement. He's had a long and great career with the Raiders, and is a certain entry into the Hall of Fame. He leaves the league as third in all-time passing yards, and tied for second in all time passing touchdowns. He was a great player and played for one team his whole career.

His final stats:

Superb dynasty and nice to see a guy stick with one team his whole career and turn out a legend.

It's just too bad he never got a ring.
