Maine Moose 2030-2039
MAINE MOOSE 2030-2039
This is a continuation of a dynasty that was started in 2009 with a new expansion team, the Maine Moose. The dynasty is being played under a series of strict house rules, as follows: 1. Limit of one UFA signing during first 10 weeks, 3 in final 10 weeks. 2. No signing of any non-rookie players after the 20 step process, except I may resign any of my unsigned free agents after the 20 step process and before training camp. 3. Renegotiating of contracts allowed only in the final year of the contract. 4. Ticket prices no higher than nearest FOFL franchise (New England Patriots). I cannot raise prices after a losing season. I can raise a maximum of 5% after a winning season, and a maximum of 10% after an appearance in the Super Bowl. 5. UFRA’s can only be signed to one-year deals, with one exception who may be signed to a 7 year deal, with x= rookie minimum, 2x, 3x, 3x, 3x, 3x, 3x 6. Franchise tag may only be used once in player’s career with my team. 7. Must maintain a full roster of 53 players each season. 8. Automatic signing of draft choices. 9. I may only accept CPU offered trades, with the exception that I may initiate one trade per decade. All CPU initiated trades must pass the “fairness test” (by adding a 7th round pick to the CPU’s offer). 10. All games are to be simmed. 11. No signing of FA's allowed after training camp, unless replacing a player on injured reserve during the season. Any FA signed to replace an injured player cannot have more than 3 years of experience. 12. No real life NFL players can be used. (This was for the startup in 2009, but obviously not needed anymore). 13. No backloading of contracts. Maximum yearly increase of 25%. Here is a history of the GM Performance:
The 2009 through 2029 history can be found here: Maine Moose 2009-2029 We are coming off of an NFL record three consecutive Super Bowl victories, in large part due to a coup in 2027 when All-Pro QB Johnny Kaye fell to week 20 of the free agent process (after several teams busted their caps). We snagged him, and he has been nothing short of sensational. The story continues as we enter the 2030 offseason. [ 04-30-2001: Message edited by: Vegas Vic ] |

2030 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2029: 100/75/47/100 We have no retirees this season. We made a profit of $43 million last season, up 3% from the previous season. We made our final $134 million dollar payment on our new stadium, which opens this season. The Moose organization is proud to announce the opening of Fairchild Stadium, a new 99,900 seat outdoor, natural grass stadium located in the suburbs of Portland. The stadium is named after our corporate sponsor, Fairchild Semiconductors, Portland’s most successful company, and the inventor of the new “virtual reality boxes” that are being installed all around the league. Fairchild Stadium will be equipped with 199 of these boxes, where the occupants will wear special head sets that allow them to experience the game through the eyes, ears and even the nose of any player on the field. Each VR box will hold 40 people. Coach Klingler’s contract has expired, and we are anxious to bring him back. The 47 year old Klingler has amassed a 131-53-1 record and four Super Bowl titles in his 10 seasons with the Moose. His .710 winning percentage is first among active coaches. We resign him to a 4/9.00 contract, which is a huge raise, but still only the 18th highest salary in the league. We decide to make a change at scout. Although we are pleased with the performance of T.J. Anthony, we have a need for a scout who is better in evaluating young talent and offensive linemen. We sign 69 year old Blaine George to a 3/500K contract George’s ratings are F/F/E/V/F/F/F/G/V. Our fan loyalty is “100” and we set the ticket prices for Fairchild Stadium. Unfortunately, we are hamstrung by New England’s prices, per the house rules. The initial prices look like this: 117/118/132/188/7900/360000/360000. We are proud to announce that we are now the #1 rated franchise in the NFL. Here are the rankings:
Here is our off season roster:
We release WR Antonio Garrison, and free up about $7 million in cap space. In retrospect, the free agent signing of Garrison was a mistake, as he was ultimately our #4 receiver behind Engleberger and young sensations Sirmon and Orosco. Head Scout George, who is “excellent” in rating receivers, confirmed Garrison as merely a “good” receiver. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contract: CB Leo Fitzgerald 3/22.67, LB Leslie Romeo 3/15.09, LB Adam Sampson 3/20.67. We have one player that is demanding a trade. Under the house rules, this is the only circumstance that we can initiate at trade. The player in question is DE Louie Porcher. We trade him to Cincinnati for their 6th round choice in this year’s draft. None of the offers from the other teams pass “the fairness test.” [This message has been edited by Vegas Vic (edited 04-16-2001).] |

Other than franchise player Caldwell, we have two UFA’s this season, backup quarterback Bo Perrault and tackle Wes Carswell. Perrault is asking for a ridiculous $20 million per season, which is more than starting QB Johnny Kaye makes. With a salary demand like that, we’ll likely see Mr. Perrault’s ass sitting in the free agent pool all season. Caldwell is a good player, not good enough for his $10 million per season asking price. We’ll turn the reigns over to our #1 pick from last year, 329 lb. monster Riddick Joseph. We would like to resign 4th year RFA guard Ernest Darchi, but we’ll wait until before training camp to see if his $8 million per season request comes down. Carswell gets a couple of offers, but the teams bust their caps are not able to sign him. Carswell’s salary demands drop into the $6.5 million per season range. Needless to say, Perrault does not get any offers; however, after the 20 step process he is still requesting a ludicrous $13 million per season. After the free agent period, Raleigh offers us their 6th round choice for fullback Leslie Noisy. Noisy has been getting rather noisy about his playing time, and it looks like our 6th round draft choice from last season, Rex Sutter, is going to win the starting position this season. We accept the trade (after checking the “fairness test”), and free up another $1 million in cap space. Before the draft, we release CB Jesse Dumrauf, WR/KR Paul Prescott, and RB Frank Vance. DRAFT Our biggest needs are backups at QB, RB, DE, and DT. We might also look at a center to replace the aging superstar Marcus Benavides.
After the draft, we resign UFA tackle Wes Carswell to a 3/22.51 contract, and we resign RFA guard Ernest Darchi to a 3/16.52 contract. This will leave us $5.3 million to sign nine URFA’s to bring our roster up to 53. We will be maxed out on the cap, with no room for injury replacement. For our “special” URFA, we sign center Lance Sawyer (16/53) to 7/9.48 contract. We fill out our roster to 53 and head to camp. Here is our post camp roster:
We sell out our 99,900 season tickets. We suffer some bad luck during preseason, losing two of our starting linebackers to injuries. Leslie Romeo will miss several weeks due to a sprained neck and Larry Griffith will miss 2 to 3 months with a broken hand. [This message has been edited by Vegas Vic (edited 04-16-2001).] |

REGULAR SEASON
Maine 38 at New Orleans 20 Our rushing attack is totally stuffed by the Saints, so Johnny Kaye turns to the aerial assault, hitting 21 out of 30 for 228 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Linebacker Romeo didn’t play, and he will sit out next week, also. St. Louis (1-0) 20 at Maine (1-0) 17 We make a sorry impression in the first ever regular season game at Fairchild Stadium. Our running game is still in the tank. Maine (1-1) 40 at San Francisco (1-1) 34 (OT) Johnny Kaye scores on a 6 yard TD run in overtime to propel the Moose to victory in a wild offensive shootout. For the game, Kaye hits 32 out of 47 for 346 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Atlanta (2-1) 37 at Maine (2-1) 34 Perhaps we need to play all of our games on the road. We lose our second consecutive home game, spoiling an outstanding performance by Kaye, who hits 19 out of 28 for 427 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 INT. The Moose tied the game on a 20 yard field goal by Derrick Kaplan with 20 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing kickoff, the Falcons took over at their own 20 after a touchback. Then, with 20 seconds left in the game, Falcons’ quarterback Marcus Runion hits Melvin McCormick for 51 yards. With 8 seconds left in the game, Teddy Colson hits a 46 yard field goal with 8 seconds in the game for the win. It’s time to start the annual season ending injuries to the starting secondary. First out, cornerback Leo Fitzgerald, out for the season with a severely pulled hamstring. Maine (2-2) 17 at Carolina (3-1) 23 We lose a critical game, falling 2 games behind the Panthers early in the season. Another serious injury, this time to starting defensive end Bruce Prewett, out 3 to 5 weeks with a deep thigh bruise. Maine (2-3) 31 at St. Louis (4-1) 14 If we could only play this well at home. With our backs against the wall, Johnny Kaye steps up and takes command, hitting 24 out of 33 for 310 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Carolina (5-1) 17 at Maine (3-3) 23 (OT) Johnny Kaye hits Wayne Engleberger on a 9 yard TD pass in overtime for the first home win of the season. We finally demonstrate a somewhat balanced attack, with Jermaine Rico rushing for 89 yards and a TD, and Kaye passing for 230 yards and 2 TD’s. On a sour note, we lose yet another starter for the season; defensive tackle Harvey Richmond, out with arthoscopic knee surgery. San Francisco (3-4) 10 at Maine (4-3) 35 Kaye hits 20 out of 34 for 193 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our banged up defense holds the Niners to 216 total yards. Since we lost one of starting defensive tackles last week, the other starter, Robert Lange felt compelled to join him, so he is now out for 2 to 3 months with a dislocated knee. Also, another starting linebacker, Adam Sampson is out with a broken nose. It appears as if we’re going to have to put a lot of points on the board to have a chance to win the remaining games. Maine (5-3) 27 at Dallas (6-2) 20 Judas H. Priest. We lose another starter, tight end Rueben Floyd with broken ribs. We somehow manage to win the game in spite of subpar performances from just about everyone on the team. Our running game is absolutely pathetic this season, and this game is no different. Arizona (5-4) 16 at Maine (6-3) 22 Derrick Kaplan hits 5 out of 6 field goals to lead the hobbling Moose to a home victory. Kaye has a decent performance, hitting 21 out of 33 for 265, 1 TD and 1 INT. We are still without a 100 yard rushing effort from Rico, who is averaging a horrendous 2.8 YPC. Maine (7-3) 52 at Atlanta (5-5) 7 Johnny Kaye hits 20 out of 28 for 273 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 INT. in the rout. New Orleans (1-10) 20 at Maine (8-3) 27 We scrape out a win at home against the worst team in the NFL. Johnny Rico breaks the 100 yard barrier for the first time this season, rushing for 132 yards on 23 carries. Kaye has another good performance, hitting 16 out of 26 for 210 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. San Diego (8-4) 10 at Maine (9-3) 30 This is the total team effort that we’ve been waiting for all season. We rush for 179 yards on 31 carries, and Kaye hits 23 out of 36 for 297 yards, 0 TD’s and 1 INT. We outgain the Chargers 452 to 244. Maine (10-3) 55 at Minnesota (8-5) 10 In one of the weirdest games in franchise history, we run four interceptions back for touchdowns and win the game in a rout, despite being outgained 310 to 234. Our offense plays a poor game, overall, and the final score is very deceiving. Maine (11-3) 27 at Kansas City (13-1) 33 We lose in overtime, and it turns out to be a monumental loss. We must win next week and hope for Washington to beat Carolina in order to win the division. Denver 20 at Maine 23 Carolina plays before us and wins, so this game becomes totally meaningless to us, as we are relegated to the #4 seed in the NFC. Accordingly, we hold out most of our starters. Denver plays to win, as they still have a slim chance to make the playoffs. Backup quarterback Hicks has a good game for us, hitting 20 out of 38 for 251 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our backup running backs combine for 179 yards on 39 carries. Denver is eliminated from the AFC playoffs.

2031 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2030: 73/74/100/100 Overall: 91 Safety Vinny Hoover announces his retirement. He will be missed. Fortunately, he would have been a UFA this season, so we don’t take a cap hit with his retirement. We made an astonishing profit of $779.6 million last year, a 1708% increase from the previous year. Of course, this was due to the attendance at the new 99,900 seat Fairchild Stadium. We welcome back Coach Klingler for what we hope will be another championship run this season. We decide to spend some of that massive profit to bring in the best available scout. We sign 55 year old Ben Glover to a 4/1.4 million contract. His ratings are V/V/E/V/ F/V/G/G/V. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, and since we had a winning season, we could raise ticket prices by 5%. Unfortunately, New England had a losing season and did not raise their prices, so ours remain at the same level as last season. Here is our offseason roster:
We have two players under contract that are demanding a trade, tackle Wes Carswell and center Jeff Peterson. Under the house rules, these are the only circumstances under which we can initiate a trade. The best offer we can get for Peterson is a 7th round pick, which we feel is unacceptable. He will stay with us for the final year of his contract. We fare better with Carswell, trading him to the Chargers’ for their 2nd round pick. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contract: DT Robert Lange 2/14.50, K Derrick Kaplan 2/3.76, P Charlie Terry 2/3.76, T Edwin Osborne 3/24.57, S Troy Cash 3/16.68, LB Larry Donnelly 3/11.54. |

We already have Sirmon protected as our franchise player. We need to resign Marcus “The Mexican Bull” Benavides, perhaps the greatest center of all time. We didn’t extend his contract last season for fear that he might retire, but he came back for his 17th season and held on to his ratings. We will try to sign him to a good 1 year deal. We will not try to resign 13 year UFA WR Wayne Engleberger. He has done a fine job for us over the years, but he has fallen to #3 on the depth chart behind Sirmon and Orosco, and we can’t justify spending our limited money under the cap on him. Since we have three starters rated ahead of 13 year LB Billy Griffith, we won’t make an effort to resign him either. We need a good safety to replace the retired Hoover, so we will make a bid for Arizona All-Pro UFA Rickey Slocumb (80/84). We nail him down in week 1 with a 3/22.58 contract. We sweat out Benavides as he gets offers from just about every team in the league. He considers a 2/13.7 offer from the Jets for a few weeks, then resigns with us in week 6 for 1/6.73. In week 9, Engleberger signs with the Lions for 2/17.20. In week 12, Griffith signs with Toronto for 3/17.15. Before the draft, we resign Sirmon to a 4/36.00 contract. |

For our special URFA, we sign RB Sedrick Flowers (22/55) to a 7/9.48 contract. We resign RFA DE Claude England to a 2/8.23 contract and release RB Burt Burke. This leaves us with only five URFA’s to sign to bring our roster up to 53. Here is our post camp roster:
We sell out our 99,900 season tickets. We go 3-1 during preseason. We lose fullback Dale Brown for 2 to 3 months with a broken wrist, and defensive tackle Robert Lange for 3 to 5 weeks with shoulder tendonitis. [ 04-22-2001: Message edited by: Vegas Vic ] |

Maine 26 at Raleigh 31 Lewis Battle tears our secondary apart, hitting 22 out of 24 passes for 239 yards and 3 TD’s. Johnny Kaye hits 20 out of 30 for 361 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. in a losing cause. Linebacker Adam Simpson will miss next week’s game due to a concussion. Atlanta (0-1) 24 at Maine (0-1) 34 Kaye hits 20 out of 33 for 277 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s, and we combine for 141 rushing yards on 30 carries. Maine (1-1) 26 at San Francisco (3-0) 6 We get a big road win, and our defense finally plays a decent game. Johnny Kaye hits 22 out of 37 for 271 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Maine (2-1) 29 at New Orleans (2-2) 3 Our defense comes up big again, holding the Saints to 202 total yards. Kicker Derrick Kaplan hits all five of his field goal attempts, making him 13 out of 14 for the season. Minnesota (3-2) 14 at Maine (3-1) 55 Johnny Kaye shreds the Viking secondary, hitting 23 out of 34 for 390 yards, 5 TD’s and 1 INT. Our running backs combine for 152 yards on 37 carries. The defense plays another outstanding game, holding the Vikings to just 123 total yards. We’re down to only two healthy defensive tackles, as Robert Lange is questionable with bruised ribs. Dallas (1-5) 13 at Maine (4-1) 26 Not an impressive win, but a win nonetheless. Our defense plays well again, holding the Cowboys to 182 total yards. Tackle Edwin Osborne will miss next week’s game due to a hip pointer. Maine (5-1) 10 at Carolina (2-4) 30 A horrible performance, with Kaye throwing 3 interceptions. Maine (5-2) 45 at Atlanta (3-4) 24 Johnny Kaye redeems himself, hitting 29 out of 38 for 326 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Jermaine Rico rushes for 103 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. We suffer a terrible break on defense, as we lose both of our starting cornerbacks; Caldwell 3-5 weeks with a hip pointer, Lucas for the rest of the season with a dislocated knee. Lucas has now had severe injuries in each of his first three NFL seasons. Buffalo (5-3) 6 at Maine (6-2) 24 The defense does it again, holding the Bills to 177 total yards. Our running backs combine for 165 yards on 39 carries. Our #1, #2 and #3 cornerbacks are all out with injuries. San Francisco (5-4) 20 at Maine (7-2) 23 Derrick Kaplan boots a 26 yard field goal with 42 seconds left in the game, as the Moose move to 8-2 on the season. The defense has another good effort, holding the 49ers to 196 total yards. Maine (8-2) 16 at St. Louis (5-5) 10 The Rams stuff our rushing attack, so Kaye is forced to throw early and often. He hits 29 out of 51 for 335 yards, 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. We lose middle linebacker Leslie Romeo for several weeks with a pulled groin. Maine (9-2) 31 at New England (7-4) 17 This one draws a lot of media coverage, as both teams are in first place combined with the geographic proximity. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 144 yards and 1 TD on 16 carries, and Johnny Kaye has a fine performance, hitting 17 out of 26 for 226 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Carolina (7-5) 26 at Maine (10-2) 53 A packed crowd of 99,900 endures icy cold 16 degree weather, as the Moose demolish the Panthers and lock up the NFC West. Johnny Kaye performs surgery on the Panther’s secondary, hitting 19 out of 30 for 275 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 103 yards and 2 TD’s on 16 carries. Maine (11-2) 13 at N.Y. Giants (10-3) 17 A tough road loss ties us with the Giants for the best record in the NFC, although they now own the tiebreaker. We have two more severe injuries to our already depleted defense. We lose safety Troy Cash for the season with a knee injury, and we lose defensive end Mercury Lewis for the season with a broken foot. St. Louis (8-6) 27 at Maine (11-3) 30 Johnny Kaye hits Johnny Orosco on a 33 yard TD pass with 1:22 left in the game, as the Moose rally for the victory. The Rams were outgained 364 to 125, yet almost won the game due to touchdowns on a punt return, interception return and fumble return. We lose another starter for 3 to 5 weeks, linebacker Larry Donnelly. New Orleans (6-9) 6 at Maine (12-3) 51 We demolish the Saints and get some good news after the game, as we find out that the Giants lost to the Seahawks, which gives us the #1 seed in the NFL. Johnny Kaye lights it up, hitting 18 out of 27 for 312 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 INT. Johnnie Orosco hauls in 10 receptions for 223 yards and 2 TD’s. Our defense holds the Saints to 141 total yards.

2032 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2031: 100/73/100/100 Overall: 97 We have two retirees, cornerback K.C. Caldwell and safety Rickey Slocumb. Caldwell’s retirement was not a surprise, as he was a 15 year veteran. Slocumb’s retirement catches us off guard. He was only a nine year veteran, so we expected a few more years out of him. Fortunately, he would have been a UFRA this year, so we don’t lose any cap money. We made a profit of $733.3 million last season, down 5% from the previous year, but outstanding nonetheless. We are happy to welcome back Coach Klingler and lead scout Glover for another season. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, but New England does not budge on their ticket prices, so we are forced to keep ours at the same level even though we won the Superbowl last year. Here is our offseason roster:
We designate QB Johnny Kaye as our franchise player. The contracts of the following players who are in the final year of their current contracts are renegotiated: TE Rueben Floyd 3/13.98, LB Adam Sampson 3/19.69, G Earnest Darchi 4/26.65, DE Bruce Prewett 3/23.33. |

We have four UFA’s; our franchise player Johnny Kaye, center Marcus Benavides, defensive tackle Harvey Richmond, and backup center Jeff Peterson. We will attempt to resign Benavides and Richmond, although we are severly strapped for cap space after accounting for Kaye’s likely salary, our draft projections, our RFA situation, and the needed money for roster fillers. Richmond is asking for about $11 million per year, which is 3.5 million higher than Carolina’s UFA DT Rufus Cooley is asking for. We take a chance and decide not to make an offer to Richmond in week 1. Benavides is head and shoulders about the UFA centers, and we make him an initial offer of 1/6.03. In Week 5 we make an offer of 3/37.51 to Richmond, but it doesn’t look good. Benavides accepts our offer in week 6. In week 7, we lose Richmond to the Chiefs for 4/54.77. Peterson gets an offer from the Steelers, but they bust their cap, and he remains unclaimed after the 20 step process. Before the draft, we come to terms with Johnny Kaye and lock him up as a member of the Moose for the remainder of his career with a 5/103.23 contract. DRAFT
After the draft, we sign our RFA tackle Riddick Joseph to a 4/35.36 contract, and our RFA CB Oscar Lucas to a 4/33.80 contract. We release RB Jermaine Rico and WR Orlando Bryant. Rico was the Superbowl MVP in 2028, but he has been an underachiever for us, averaging only 3.7 YPC during his four year career. We are pleased with the job that starting running back Kennedy Oliver did last year (1021 yards, 4.4 YPC, 5 TD), and we have a reliable backup in Adrian Tierny, who averaged 4.0 YPC last year. The release of Rico frees up about $3.5 million in cap space, which enables us to fill our roster to 53 with a little left over for injury replacement. For our “special” URFA, we sign Notre Dame fullback Melvin Hurst (28/49) to a 7/10.18 contract. We fill our our roster with URFA’s and head to camp. Here is our post camp roster:
We sell out our season tickets and go through preseason with no significant injuries to our starters. [ 04-22-2001: Message edited by: Vegas Vic ] |

REGULAR SEASON
Baltimore 3 at Maine 27 In a rematch of last year’s Superbowl, we come out on top again. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 114 yards on 18 carries, and Johnny Kaye hits 19 out of 31 for 215 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Carolina (0-1) 8 at Maine (1-0) 33 Our running game struggles, but Johnny Kaye comes through for us, hitting 27 out of 32 for 300 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our defense does a good job against Panthers’ QB Dennis Lewis, holding him to just 10 completions in 24 attempts for 138 yards. Atlanta (1-1) 20 at Maine (2-0) 34 Our running game gets back on track, with Oliver rushing for 82 yards on 12 carries, and QB Kaye rushing for 41 yards and 1 TD on 7 carries. Kaye also tosses 3 TD passes in the win, two of them to Jose Sirmon. Starting defensive tackle Robert Lange will miss several weeks with a hip pointer. We will move defensive end Claude England to fill his spot, with second year Mercury Lewis getting the start at DE. Maine (3-0) 31 at Cincinnati (3-0) 34 We suffer our first loss of the season to the powerhouse Bengals, who remain undefeated. In a battle of two future Hall of Fame QB’s, the Bengals’ Ted Sockanathan comes out on top, hitting 17 out of 30 for 299 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 INT. Johnny Kaye hits 21 out of 44 for 388 yards, 4 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Kennedy Oliver adds 93 rushing yards on 18 carries for the Moose, who head back to Portland after a very disappointing loss. We lose starting LB Leslie Romeo for 2 to 3 months with a torn calf muscle. Maine (3-1) 17 at San Francisco (2-2) 20 Another heartbreaking road loss drops us to a mediocre 3-2. To add injury to insult, we lose two of our best players: T Edwin Osborne for 3 to 5 weeks with a broken hand, and CB Oscar Lucas for 2 to 3 months with a torn calf muscle. New Orleans (0-4) 10 at Maine (3-2) 40 Johnny Kaye steps up bigtime in this one, hitting 18 out of 27 for 373 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. We outgain the Saints 511 to 233, and head into a much needed bye week. San Francisco (4-3) 17 at Maine (4-2) 24 On a snowy Monday night, We get revenge for the heartbreaking loss of two games ago. Johnny Kaye completes 19 out of 33 for 234 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. We do a good job against Zach Lincoln, holding him to 14 completions in 32 attempts for 210 yards, 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. St. Louis (6-2) 27 at Maine (5-2) 17 The Rams score two fourth quarter touchdowns, and the win gives them a commanding lead in the division. Johnny Kaye is knocked out of the game, but his injury is not serious and he will return next week. Our best receiver, Johnnie Orosco, sat out the game with a broken finger. Tampa Bay (3-5) 29 at Maine (5-3) 41 When we saw the weather report with 27 degrees at gametime, we knew we were in good shape against Tampa Bay. Our running game struggles again, so we return to the aerial assault of Johnny Kaye, who hits 26 out of 42 for 491 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Maine (6-3) at Carolina (5-4) A big road win keeps us within one game of the first place Rams. Kennedy Oliver grinds out 82 hard earned yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Johnny Kaye hits 19 out of 32 for 275 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Unfortunately, we lose defensive tackle Robert Lange for the rest of the season after he re-aggravates his hip pointer. Maine (7-3) 41 at Atlanta (3-7) 11 Johnny Kaye rushes for 1 TD and passes for 4 as we rout the Falcons and remain one game behind the Rams for the division lead. Kennedy Oliver chips in with 84 yards on 19 carries, and Jose Sirmon hauls in 5 catches for 107 yards and 2 TD’s. We are happy to welcome LB Leslie Romeo back to the starting lineup after missing six games with a torn calf muscle. His return is an inspiration to our defense, and they respond by holding the Falcons to 159 yards of total offense. N.Y. Giants (5-6) 6 at Maine (8-3) 9 This turns out to be a defensive struggle of monumental proportions. Fortunately, our All-Pro kicker Derrick Kaplan booted three field goals (including Norman Norton missed a potential game tying 55 yard field goal with 2:43 left in the game, and after that, the Moose were able to run out the clock to preserve the win. We lose Claude England for 3 to 5 weeks with a bruised sternum. England had moved over from DE to DT due to Robert Lange’s injury. The starting job will now fall to untested URFA Russell Todd. Maine (9-3) at St. Louis (9-3) We come up with a huge win on Monday Night Football, and we take over sole possession of first place in the division. Derrick Kaplan connects on all 4 of his field goal attempts, moving to 28 out of 34 for the season. Our running backs combine for 170 yards on 40 carries, and Johnny Kaye has a mistake free 20 out of 26 performance for 206 yards. Maine (10-3) 24 at Chicago (9-4) 10 Johnny Kaye continues his quest for another NFL MVP award, as he hits 17 out of 30 for 239 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. We maintain our one game lead over the Rams in the division. Maine (11-3) 20 at Cleveland (6-8) 16 Our victory, coupled with the Rams loss, clinches the division title for us. Unfortunately, we lose All-Pro wide receiver Jose Sirmon for the remainder of the season with a broken jaw. This is a huge loss to our passing game. Our 2nd year man Harvey Kleinsasser will have to step up and try to fill his shoes. Maine (12-3) 27 at New Orleans (1-14) 3 We lock up the #1 seed in the NFL, and make it through the game without any additional significant injuries. Our running backs combine for 208 yards on 43 carries, and our defense holds the Saints to 211 total yards.

PLAYOFFS
St. Louis 17 at Maine 30 This turns out to be a brutal game. Johnny Kaye is knocked out early with an injury, and backup QB Hicks plays most of the game, and does a decent job in relief, hitting 15 out of 28 for 177 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Kennedy Oliver picks up the slack, rushing for 193 yards and 1 TD on just 18 carries. Our injury situation is almost laughable. Defensive tackle Robert Lange, now completely healthy, makes his first start in over two months, then leaves the game with bruised ribs and is questionable for next week. Tackle Edwin Osborne, out for the remainder of the playoffs with a bruised sternum. Fullback Dale Brown, out for the remainder of the playoffs with shoulder tendonitis. Toronto 14 at Maine 10 On a bitterly cold 12 degree day, Argonaut running back Fred Proffit shreds our defense for 207 yards on 25 carries, including a game winning 77 yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. Without our two best run blockers, T Osborne and FB Brown, the Argonauts stuff our running game, holding us to only 60 yards on 25 carries, and Johnny Kaye is unable to work his magic, hitting only 15 out of 28 for 143 yards and 1 TD. Overall, we made a good effort, but missing three All-Pro players was too much to overcome. The Seattle Seahawks beat the Toronto Argonauts 19-0 to win their first Super Bowl in their 56 year history. 2033 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2032: 90/76/100/100 Overall: 95 We have two retirees: center Marcus Benavides and linebacker Leslie Romeo. Both of these players are likely candidates for the Hall of Fame, so I will detail their careers in a couple of years after they are inducted. Defensive end Blake Soriano is inducted into our team Hall of Fame, even though he never played a down for us. He was traded in his rookie season after breaking out in training camp. He went on to play for 16 seasons, garnering All-Pro honors on three occasions. We made a profit of $654.4 million last season, down 10% from the previous season. Coach Klingler returns for another season. We decide to go with a new scout, so we sign 59 year old Carlton Lynn to a 4/1.75 million contract. His ratings are an outstanding E/V/G/E/V/G/V/E/V. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, and we are entitled to raise ticket prices up to 5%. Unfortunately, for the third consecutive year, New England does not raise their prices, so ours remain the same. Here is our offseason roster:
We designate guard Trent Clemons as our franchise player. We release the following players: G Joey Allotey, S Seth Simmons. |

We have seven UFA’s this season: Our franchise player Trent Clemmons, kicker Derrick Kaplan, punter Charlie Terry, CB Leo Fitzgerald, DT Robert Lange, DE Claude England and DT Justin Brady. We will make an effort to resign Kaplan. Terry is no longer worth paying big money, and we will draft a new punter this year. Fitzgerald is asking for the highest salary of any UFA corner, even though he is about the sixth best available. We will exercise our house rule’s option of one UFA signing in the first 10 weeks and go after Green Bay All-Pro UFA cornerback Charlie Rivers. Lange is a decent defensive tackle, but he is asking for way too much money to resign. We’ll see if his salary drops to a reasonable level during the process. England has lost his starting job to 3rd year DE Mercury Lewis, so there is no need to keep him around. Brady has been a backup for all of his four years, and is no where near good enough to pay free agent money. In week 6, we resign our All-Pro kicker Derrick Kaplan to a 2/4.3 contract. In week 7, we land a big prize, cornerback Charlie Rivers (60/60), who signs a 3/34.47 contract. In week 10, Lange signs with Seattle for 3/24.00, and Terry signs with the Colts for 3/6.68. In week 14, we sign a replacement for Benavides, center Ray Kern (50/59) to a 1/5.74 contract. Fitzgerald, England and Brady go unclaimed during free agency. Before the draft, we reach a deal with our franchise player, Trent Clemmons, and resign him to a 4/25.97 contract. |

For our special URFA, we sign LB Ricky Batchelor (24/55) to a 7/10.62 contract. We shell out a huge 1 year deal to unsigned UFA CB Leo Fitzgerald for 12.7 million. It’s a lot of money, but we have the cap room, and this gives us some insurance on our historical injury prone secondary. We sign 12 URFA’s and head to camp. Here is our post camp roster:

REGULAR SEASON
Oakland 3 at Maine 49 What a way to open the season. Johnny Kaye hits 13 out of 14 for 192 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s before giving way to the backups. Starting running back Kennedy Oliver gains 58 yards in his first 3 carries, then leaves the game with an injury. His backup, Flowers, rushes for 96 yards and 1 TD on 23 carries. All-Pro wide receiver Jose Sirmon catches 5 passes for 81 yards and 4 TD’s. The defense is not to be outshadowed, as they keep the Raiders out of the endzone, and limit them to just 192 total yards. Maine (1-0) 34 at Carolina (1-0) 24 Flowers makes the most of his start due to Kennedy Oliver’s broken finger, gaining 128 yards and 1 TD on 15 carries. Johnny Kaye has a flawless performance, hitting 27 out of 37 for 301 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Jose Sirmon hauls in 6 passes for 95 yards and 3 TD’s. Dennis Lewis passes for 370 yards in a losing effort for the Panthers. LB Donnie Farrell will sit out next week’s game due to a dislocated shoulder. DE Bruce Prewitt will sit out with bruised ribs. RB Kennedy Oliver is probable, and he is anxious to get back into the lineup before he loses his starting position to Flowers. New Orleans (1-1) 13 at Maine (2-0) 41 Kennedy Oliver was raring to go in this one, rushing for 138 yards and 2 TD’s on 24 carries. Kaye has a quiet yet mistake free performance, hitting 12 out of 28 for 211 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our defense gives up some yardage, but intercepts 3 passes, including 2 by safety Troy Cash. Starting guard Trent Clemmons will miss next week’s game due to a concussion, so we’ll move backup center Duane Stewart over to take his place. St. Louis (1-2) 6 at Maine (3-0) 34 A capacity Monday night crowd watches us take the Rams apart on national television and move to 4-0 on the young season. Johnny Kaye hits 18 out of 28 for 278 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT (his first of the season!). Jose Sirmon continues his torching of the opposing secondary, catching 8 passes for 147 yards and 2 TD’s. Oliver chips in with 58 rushing yards and 1 TD on just 13 carries. Denver (1-3) 20 at Maine (4-0) 17 Denver QB Barry Shubert hits Jerald Irwin on a 6 yard TD pass with 34 seconds in the game, as the Broncos come from behind and hand the Moose their first loss of the season. Bronco running back Casey Strickland had a fine day, rushing for 153 yards and 1 TD. Kaye goes 20 out of 33 for 228 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s in a losing effort. Maine (4-1) 45 at New Orleans (2-3) 14 We come into the game with a chip on our shoulder, and take it out on the hapless Saints. Our defense runs back three interception returns for touchdowns, and Kennedy Oliver rushes for 86 yards and 1 TD on 14 carries. Maine (5-1) 20 at Chicago (1-4) 31 The Bears catch us off guard and pull the upset at Soldier Field. We suffer a huge loss, as All-Pro receiver Jose Sirmon is lost for the season with elbow ligament surgery. He might be able to return for the playoffs, so we don’t put him on IR. We also lose DT Harris Kiani for several weeks with a broken foot. Johnny Kaye has his worst day ever as a pro, 5 out of 13 for 168 yards and 2 INT’s before leaving with an injury midway through the second quarter. Backup Howie Hicks was absolutely horrible, hitting 7 out of 19 for 53 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT’s. Chicago scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Carolina (4-3) 23 at Maine (5-2) 24 All-Pro kicker Derrick Kaplan boots a 35 yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the game, as the Moose rally to beat the Panthers on a rainy south Maine day. The Panthers’ Dennis Lewis completes a remarkable 27 out of 28 passes in the loss. Johnny Kaye is nearly as impressive, hitting 17 out of 21 for 247 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Oliver adds 76 yards rushing on 19 carries. Starting LB Adam Sampson will miss a couple of games due to a dislocated shoulder. Maine (6-2) 27 at Atlanta (5-3) 17 We get a big road win and take over sole possession of first place in the division after Carolina defeats San Francisco. Maine (7-2) 27 at Seattle (6-3) 24 (OT) We get a big road win in a much hyped game with the defending Super Bowl champs. With the Moose trailing 24-14, Johnny Kaye hits Harvey Kleinsasser on a 34 yard TD pass with 1:46 left in the game to cut the Seattle lead to 24-21. The Moose hold the Seahawks to three and out, using their three time outs, and get the ball back. Derrick Kaplan then hits a 37 yard field goal with 17 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. With time running out in the overtime period, Kaplan hits the game winner from 47 yards. Kleinsasser, substituting for the injured Jose Sirmon, hauls in 8 catches for 153 yards and 1 TD. Johnny Kaye completes 26 out of 48 for 316 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. We lose All-Pro safety Troy Cash for a couple of games due to bruised ribs. Maine (8-2) 40 at St. Louis (4-6) 0 We demolish the Rams, outgaining them 416 to 112. Our backs combine for 196 yards rushing, and Kaye hits 15 out of 25 for 162 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT, before yielding to backup Howie Hicks. Maine (9-2) 37 at San Francisco (6-5) 10 We get a big win, as we complete our fourth consecutive road game (thanks to our good friend, the NFL schedule maker). Kaye hits 21 out of 31 for 307 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 INT. Safety Herb Macri comes up with two big interceptions to lead the defense. Atlanta (7-5) 30 at Maine (10-2) 10 We win four consecutive road games, then come home and get humiliated by the Falcons. Go figure. Kaye has a rare bad day, with 2 costly interceptions. Maine (10-3) 34 at Dallas (8-5) 31 Derrick Kaplan boots a game winning 25 yard field goal with 2 seconds left in the game. Johnny Kaye bounces back with an outstanding performance, hitting 21 out of 32 for 348 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. The loss puts the Cowboys’ playoff hopes in jeopardy, and spoils a tremendous 214 yard rushing performance by running back Julio Moore. We’re in bad shape at the wide receiver position, as our #3 man Harvey Kleinsasser goes down with a hip pointer. This leaves us with starter Johnnie Orosco and #4 receiver Irving Ford to pick up the slack. Toronto (4-10) 14 at Maine (11-3) 20 We scrape out a win against the Argonauts, who have already been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Our home performances this season have been subpar, to say the least. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 128 yards on 17 carries. San Francisco (7-8) 10 at Maine (12-3) 34 We play our 2nd stringers in a meaningless game, as we are already relegated as the #2 seed in the NFL. Maybe we should have started our second unit at all of the home games this season. We get a good look at backup QB Hicks, who hits 19 out of 37 for 213 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s.

Chicago 10 at Maine 40 Johnny Kaye tosses 3 touchdown passes and Oscar Lucas comes up with two big interceptions to lead our defense. Our fourth string wide receiver, Irving Ford, is forced into starting duty due to injuries. He comes up big, with 4 catches for 110 yards and 2 TD’s. Maine 23 at Philadelphia 21 Derrick Kaplan boots a 19 yard field goal with 1:08 left in the game to send us on to the Superbowl. Kennedy Oliver returns to form, rushing for 105 yards on 23 carries. Johnny Kaye completes 17 out of 30 for 255 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Maine 21 at Raleigh 29 We come up a bit short in a Superbowl matchup of the two newest teams in the NFL. The Copperheads completely stuff our rushing game, holding us to a paltry 49 yards on 18 carries. Johnny Kaye hits 18 out of 29 for 232 yards, 3 TD’s and 2 costly interceptions. 2034 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2033: 95/75/100/100 Overall: 96 Cornerback Leo Fitzgerald announces his retirement after 13 seasons. We made a profit of $657.6 million last season, up a fraction of a percent from the previous year. Coach Klingler’s contract has expired, and we know he will be a hot commodity among the rest of the teams. In his 14 seasons as head coach of the Moose, Klingler has established himself as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the NFL, with a career record of 189-69-1 (.731). His teams have made the playoffs in 12 out of 14 seasons, and he was won an unprecedented 5 Superbowls in 8 attempts. We make Klingler an offer he can’t refuse, 5/15.00, and he deservedly becomes the highest paid coach in the NFL. We are happy with lead scout Carlton Lynn, and he returns for another year of service. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, but for the fourth consecutive year, New England does not raise their ticket prices, so we are forced to keep our prices at the same level as last year. We have six UFA’s testing the market this season: T Edwin Osborne, QB Howie Hicks, LB Larry Donnelly, S Troy Cash, WR Johnnie Orosco, and C Ray Kern. Osborne and Donnelly are crucial to resign, Cash and Orosco are desirable. Our backup QB Hicks is the best QB in free agency, and better than most starters, but we can’t pay him millions of dollars to sit on the bench behind Kaye. Kern filled a need for us with a 1 year contract last season, but our young draftees appear ready to compete for the starting center job. We make an initial offer of 1/9.09 to 13 year veteran Osborne. He gets a bunch of 3 year offers, but we will not match them, for fear of taking a big cap hit if this is his final season. In week 3, we offer S Troy Cash 1/6.53. We bump Osborne’s offer up to 1/9.25. In week 4, Cash resigns with us. Kern signs a 1/7.58 contract with Toronto. In week 5, backup QB Hicks signs a 2/40.48 contract with the Chiefs. He could become a rising star in the AFC. In week 6, Osborne resigns with us. In week , we offer Donnelly a 3/24.72 contract. The following week, he signs with the Redskins for 4/36.72. We regroup, and in week 20, we sign 13 year veteran LB Wade Boyer (52/52) to a 1/4.35 contract. Orosco does not get any offers during free agency, and we will try to resign him before camp for about $7 million per season. We resign our franchise player, Kennedy Oliver, to a 4/42.01 contract. Overall, we came out fairly well. We did lose Donnelly, but Boyer is a decent replacement at about half the price. The loss of Hicks was inevitable, but now we’re left without a decent backup to Kaye. |

After the draft, we resign WR Johnnie Orosco to a 3/24.66 contract. For our special URFA, we sign G Dean Owens to a 7/11.16 contract. We sign 9 URFA’s to bring our roster up to 53. Here is our post-camp roster:
It looks like we got the steal of the draft with 2nd round choice DT Ricky Branch, whose current/potential rating increases to an astounding (53/92) after camp. He should dominate the defensive line for years to come. We go 2-2 during preseason with no significant injuries to key players. Our backup quarterback situation is in dire straits. Maine 26 at Carolina 3 It’s always good to open the season with a win, especially in a divisional road game. Johnny Kaye hits 21 out of 28 for 270 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 109 yards and 1 TD on 15 carries. We lose our best linebacker, Donnie Farrell, for 3 to 5 weeks with a hip pointer. Rookie Zac Rex will have to fill in, even though he’s not ready. Minnesota (1-0) 6 at Maine (0-1) 30 On a beautiful 61 degree southern Maine day, we take the Vikings apart before a capacity crowd of 99,900. Johnny Kaye hits 19 out of 23 for 230 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Our running backs combine for 186 yards on 47 carries. Kennedy Oliver leaves the game after his first carry, but is probable for next week. New Orleans (0-2) 14 at Maine (2-0) 29 Kaye hits 23 out of 41 for 266 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 93 yards on 16 carries. Our defense plays well, holding the Saints to 204 total yards. Troy Cash picks off two passes to lead the defensive effort. St. Louis (2-1) 9 at Maine (3-0) 13 The Rams give us all we can handle in a Monday night defensive struggle. Kaye manages to do just enough, 18 out of 29 for 243 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Our defense plays a heck of a game, holding the Rams to 3 Donnie Wheeler field goals. Maine (4-0) 34 at San Francisco (2-3) 27 Johnnie Kaye lights it up against the hated 49ers, hitting 23 out of 38 for 255 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. All-Pro CB Charlie Rivers will miss next week’s game with a deep thigh bruise. All-Pro tight end will also sit out with bruised ribs. Carolina (1-5) 16 at Maine (5-0) 44 Kennedy Oliver steals the spotlight in this rout, as he rushes for 91 yards and 2 TD’s, and catches 2 TD passes. Johnny Kaye connects on 28 out of 45 for 322 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Maine (6-0) 31 at Atlanta (1-5) 6 No contest here, as we jump out to a 24-0 halftime lead, and cruise to victory in the second half. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 152 yards and 1 TD on 16 carries. Kaye has a conservative 18-32-176-2-0 performance. Raleigh (6-1) 16 at Maine (7-0) 13 In a Monday night rematch of last year’s Superbowl, we suffer another bitter loss to the Copperheads, as Eddie Doe kicks a game winning 32 yard field goal with 35 seconds left in the game. Johnny Kaye left the game early in the first quarter with an injury, and he did not return, which was obviously the difference in the game. Rookie backup Colin Lynch hit 20 out of 28 for 193 yards and an interception. Maine (7-1) 24 at St. Louis (5-3) 37 We’ve developed a bad habit of losing consecutive games over the years, and this year appears to be no exception. St. Louis moves to within one game of the division lead. Maine (7-2) 41 at New Orleans (4-5) 31 Oliver rushes for 92 yards and 2 TD’s and Kaye throws for 208 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. The game wasn’t as close as the score indicates, as the Saints score 17 points in the fourth quarter, including a meaninless touchdown with 25 seconds left in the game. Maine (8-2) 31 at New England (6-4) 28 We go up 31-17 in the fourth quarter, and hold on for the win. The Patriots completely shut down our rushing attack, but Johnny Kaye is able to hit 19 out of 25 for 214 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. We lose our best wide receiver, Johnnie Orosco, for 3 to 5 weeks with a hyperextended knee. Maine (9-2) 32 at Chicago (4-7) 7 We get the victory, but we lose our outstanding defensive end, Mercury Lewis, for the rest of the season with a broken arm. Oliver rushes for 89 yards and a touchdown, and Kaye hits 22 out of 28 for 267 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Atlanta (2-10) 13 at Maine (10-2) 48 Oliver rushes for 98 yards, and Kaye has a magnificent performance, hitting 21 out of 27 for 249 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Tight end Rueben Floyd has turf toe and will miss next week’s game against the hated 49ers. San Francisco (6-7) 3 at Maine (11-2) 27 Backup tight end Jimmy Shelton makes the most of his start, catching 7 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. Our defense manhandles the 49er’s, holding them to 160 yards and a field goal. Philadelphia (9-5) 14 at Maine (12-2) 17 All-Pro kicker Derrick Kaplan wins it with a 25 yard field goal with 2 seconds left in the game. The Eagles battled the entire game, as they are fighting for a playoff spot. Johnnie Kaye has another flawless performance, hitting 19 out of 29 for 194 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. We suffer our second season ending injury, as tackle Edwin Osborne suffers a broken jaw. Maine (13-2) 15 at Miami (7-8) 22 We are tied with Arizona for the #1 seed, so we wait and see what happens in their early game to determine if this will be a must win game. Unfortunately, they squeek by the Los Angeles Earthquakes 27-24, so we will have to play to win. If we win, we will get the #1 seed, based on the tiebreaker. We blow it, and lose to a team that has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. The loss relegates us to the #2 seed in the NFC, so we will still get a bye week, but if we win, we’ll more than likely will have to travel to Phoenix for the NFC championship.

PLAYOFFS
St. Louis 10 at Maine 38 We split with the Rams during the regular season, but this one is no contest, as we outgain them 453-223. Johnny Kaye turns his performance up another level, completing 24 out of 35 for 338 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. We have a huge challenge next week when we travel to Arizona to play the #1 seeded Cardinals. They demolished the Eagles 43-13 to advance to the NFC Championship. Maine 13 at Arizona 7 This turns out to be a smashmouth struggle to see who gets to the Superbowl. Kennedy Oliver grinds out 91 yards on 21 carries, and Kaye hits a modest 14 out of 23 for 157 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Our defense comes up big, intercepting Cardinals’ quarterback Johnnie Lane twice, and limiting him to 135 yards passing. We get a rematch with the Raleigh Copperheads in the Superbowl, but this time they have to come to Fairchild Stadium. They beat us during the regular season, but Johnny Kaye got knocked out of the game early in the first quarter. We are hoping for better luck this time around. They have a great balanced attack, with running back Earnest Stubbs rushing for 1,414 yards and 11 TD’s, and QB Lewis Battle, who threw 22 TD’s against 12 INT’s and completed 60.8% of his passes. Raleigh 13 at Maine 31 Our defense comes up with 3 big interceptions, and Johnny Kaye completes 13 out of 18 for 166 yards, 4 TD’s and 1 INT. Our running backs combine for 140 yards on 32 carries. The Moose tie the Denver Broncos with their 8th Superbowl title, and their unprecedented 6th title in the last 11 years. 2035 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2034: 100/75/100/100 Overall: 98 We have no retirees this season. We made a profit of $681.8 million last season, a 3% increase from the previous year. We induct our fourth member into the Moose Ring of Honor: center Marcus “The Mexican Bull” Benavides. Marcus was a 5th round steal from Indiana State, and he played 17 seasons with the Moose, 14 as a starter. He was a 6 time All-Pro, and his 433 career run blocks put him second on the all-time list. In his career, he only missed one start due to an injury. With all of these accomplishments and six Super Bowl rings, he is not selected to the NFL Hall of Fame, which we feel is a travesty. The NFL can keep him out of the hall, but the millions of knowledgeable fans across America know that he is one of the greatest centers to ever play the game. Coach Klingler and lead scout Lynn return for another year of service. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, and for the first time in several years we are able to raise some of our ticket prices (albeit slightly) because New England raises their prices slightly. Here is our offseason roster:
We designate LB Adam Sampson as our franchise player. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contracts: G Ernest Darchi 3/18.94, T Riddick Joseph 4/38.38, CB Charlie Rivers 4/45.88. |

At first glance it might appear as if we’re in deep trouble, because we have 11 UFA’s: K Derrick Kaplan, TE Reuben Floyd, T Edwin Osborne, LB Adam Sampson, S Troy Cash, S Ted Drauch, DT Wes Stuart, FB Dale Brown, LB Wade Boyer, DE Bruce Prewett, and WR Jose Sirmon. In reality, we only intend to resign four of these guys: Kaplan, Floyd, Sampson and Cash. Osborne is one of the best tackles around, even after 14 years, but our third year man Justin Beeston (49/68) is ready to take over (for about $9 million less per season). Drauch is a good player, but he has horrible endurance, so we’d rather resign aging veteran Cash for one more season while we draft his eventual replacement. Stuart is also a good player, but our third year DT Harris Kiani is ready to take over that spot. Melvin Hurst appears ready to win the starting FB job, and he is a better run blocker than Brown. Our 1st round pick from last year, Zac Rex, appears ready to take over for Boyer. Prewett is a tough call. Third year DE Neil McWilliams (24/52) might be a borderline starter after camp, but he’s got poor endurance. We might try to resign Prewett, but not for the outlandish $11 million per season that he’s asking for. Finally, we are saddened that WR Jose Sirmon will not be resigned this year. He was an All-Pro for three consecutive seasons (2030-2032), but he suffered a season ending injury in 2033, and his ratings have really deteriorated (40/40). We will make use of the house rules which allow one outside UFA signing in the first 10 weeks and make an aggressive offer to UFA All-Pro Giants WR Roosevelt Blades (84/84), a 6 year veteran from Princeton. He broke the NFL record last season with an incredible 2,002 receiving yards, averaging a whopping 18.0 YPC. We start out with these initial offers in week 1: Floyd 3/19.40, Blades 3/38.77, Kaplan 1/2.41, Cash 1/6.83. Cash resigns with us in week 2. In week 5, Osborne signs with the Dolphins for 3/29.39. In week 6, Floyd resigns with us. Brown signs with the Giants for 4/24.74. Blades gets some huge offers, but we land him in week 7. In week 8, Prewett signs a 3/29.69 contract with the Redskins. Kaplan starts getting some higher offers, so we bump ours up to 1/2.61, which he accepts in week 9. Drauch signs a 2/14.95 contract with Los Angeles. Stuart signs a 2/24.39 contract with Raleigh. In week 10, Boyer signs with the hated 49ers for 2/14.00. In week 12, we sign a quality backup TE, Barry Fielding (55/56), to a 3/11.02 contract. In week 14, we add some depth at DT by signing 2nd year FA Burt Hines (20/53) to a 3/8.76 contract. In week 20, we sign a top quality backup QB, 15 year veteran Earl McDougall (68/68) to a 1/9.62 contract. |

I utilize house rule #9, and trade my first round picks for the next three seasons for Atlanta’s #1 overall pick this season.
Our franchise player, LB Adam Sampson signs a 1/5.67 contract. Our FA punter, Morris Salinas resigns for 1/1.2. We resign backup FA TE Jimmy Shelton to a 3/16.23 contract. Here is our post camp roster:
We go a surprising 4-0 during preseason, keeping most of our starters on the bench. We sell out our 99,900 season tickets. [ 04-28-2001: Message edited by: Vegas Vic ] |

REGULAR SEASON
Maine 20 at Cincinnati 19 Derrick Kaplan boots a 53 yard field goal late in the fourth quarter for the win. Johnny Kaye has a poor game, completing 14 out of 24 for for 108 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 104 yards on 23 carries. Maine (1-0) 41 at San Francisco (1-0) 27 Kaye struggles again, and the offense doesn’t really click, but we get the win. The final score is very deceiving. Maine (2-0) 42 at New Orleans (0-2) 13 Johnny Kaye comes into this game with a chip on his shoulder after his slow start. He hits 25 out of 36 for 287 yards, 5 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our rushing game is absolutely shut down. Jacksonville (1-2) 3 at Maine (3-0) 24 Kennedy Oliver rushes for 126 yards on 21 carries. Johnny Kaye only passes for 115 yards, but he throws 3 TD’s against 0 INT’s, so who can complain? Herb Macri gets his fourth interception of the young season. Atlanta (3-1) 5 at Maine (4-0) 33 Our backs combine for 215 yards rushing on 37 carries. Unbelievably, our kicker Derrick Kaplan gets injured with a hyperextended knee, and he is doubtful for next week. Maine (5-0) 37 at Carolina (4-0) 19 Our defense holds the Panthers to 21 yards rushing on 22 attempts, and only 14 out of 30 passing. Kaye has a decent game, hitting 20 out of 30 for 239 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Maine (6-0) 19 at Atlanta (4-3) 3 The Falcons do a good job against our running game, but Kaye hits 26 out of 42 for 256 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Maine (7-0) 27 at St. Louis (4-3-1) 10 Kennedy Oliver rumbles for 121 yards on 28 carries and Johnny Kaye hits 20 out of 33 for 227 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. Our defense holds Pat Hammett to just 96 yards passing. Maine (8-0) 28 at Minnesota (6-2) 24 Alfred Webster scores on a 92 yard punt return late in the fourth quarter, as we complete our murderer’s row away schedule. San Francisco (6-3) 10 at Maine (9-0) 13 (OT) On a rainy Monday night, Derrick Kaplan boots a 39 yard field goal in overtime for the win. New Orleans (3-7) 22 at Maine (10-0) 15 We’ve been winning “ugly”, and it finally catches up to us. The Saints score on an eight yard fumble return late in the fourth quarter for the win. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 162 yards in a losing effort. Maine (10-1) 31 at Arizona (7-4) 24 We get the victory, but still struggle. Kaye completes 20 out of 33 and throws 2 TD’s, but also 2 INT’s. St. Louis (5-6-1) 13 at Maine (11-1) 30 Kennedy Oliver rushes for 157 yards and 2 TD’s on 27 carries. Detroit (10-3) 14 at Maine (12-1) 45 The final score is very deceiving, as this was a fairly close game statistically. Johnny Kaye gets knocked out early, and veteran Earl McDougall fills in admirably, hitting 13 out of 18 for 223 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Tennessee (7-6-1) 14 at Maine (13-1) 17 We manage to scrape out another win in a lackluster performance. This team is just lucky, and it doesn’t bode well for the playoffs. Johnny Kaye is having his poorest season in 10 years, with a QB rating of 88.4. Carolina (8-7) 23 at Maine (14-1) 17(OT) An absolute pathetic end to the season, as we end up as the #2 seed in the NFL. The team ends up with a 14-2 record, which is a mirage when the statistics are examined. I would not be surprised to see us exit in the first playoff game.

Atlanta 14 at Maine 26 Kennedy Oliver steps up and gains 125 yards on 32 carries. Kaye continues his subpar season, hitting just 15 out of 32 (47%) for 265 yards, 2 TD’s and an interception. We lose starting center Vinny Barton for the remainder of the playoffs. Linebacker Adam Sampson is questionable with a stretched knee ligament, and safety Troy Cash is questionable with a broken hand. They will both start next week. Detroit 33 at Maine 26 We take a 19-3 lead into the fourth quarter, where Detroit proceeds to outscore us 30-7. Our mirage season comes to a disappointing but not unexpected end. New England defeats Detroit 28-19 in the Super Bowl. Kaye finished tied for fourth in the NFL passer ratings with an 88.6 rating. He averaged a putrid 6.67 YPA. Jason Mueller of the Patriots completed 65.4% of his passes, threw 24 TD’s against 7 INT’s, had a 7.88 YPA, and a QB rating of 103.8. |

2036 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2035: 90/74/100/100 Overall: 95 Backup tight end Barry Fielding retires after only nine seasons in the NFL. He was with us for only one year of his career and did not see much playing time. We made a profit of $736.5 million last season, and 8% increase from the previous year. Coach Klingler and lead scout Lynn return for another year of service. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, and we raise our ticket prices slightly in a couple of areas to match New England’s prices. Here is our offseason roster:
We designate DE Mercury Lewis as our franchise player. We renegotiate the contract of guard Trent Clemons, who is in the final year of his current contract, to 3/19.94. We release TE Jimmy Shelton and DT Burt Hines. Shelton is a fine TE, but he didn’t play at all last season because of All-Pro Floyd, and we can’t affort to pay him $5.3 million to sit on the bench. |

With the renegotiation and cuts, we have about $60 million in cap space to sign our UFA’s, RFA’s, draft picks and URFA roster fillers. This is going to be very tough to do this season. In addition to our franchise player, Mercury Lewis, we have six UFA’s: K Derrick Kaplan, QB Earl McDougall, S Troy Cash, LB Adam Sampson, CB Oscar Lewis, and C Duane Stewart. We feel that Kaplan, Cash and Oscar Lewis are critical to resign. We would love to have the others as well, but it does not appear to be economically viable to resign them. Veteran McDougall is an outstanding QB, but last year’s first round draft pick Heiden will be ready to take the reigns in a year or two when legendary Johnny Kaye retires. Adam Sampson is a fine LB, but he will become a victim of the cap this season. Fourth year veteran Ricky Batchelor will take over, although he isn’t as talented as Sampson. Stewart would have been worth resigning, but he is angry over his playing time behind RFA Vinny Barton. In retrospect, we probably should have given Stewart much more playing time, as he is much more balanced than Barton. Barton is an outstanding run blocker, but his pass blocking skill is mediocre. We will also sign one more RFA, All-Pro punter Morris Salinas. We make an initial offer in week 1 to Kaplan (1/2.49). We temporarily hold off on offers to Cash and Oscar Lewis, as they are requesting much more than the guys who are rated ahead of them. In week 2, Tennessee offers Cash 3/30.83, so we are forced to jump in and offer 1/9.42. In week 3, Kaplan accepts our initial offer. In week 3, we offer Oscar Lucas 3/41.93. In week 5, Earl McDougall signs with the Steelers for 2/39.04. Oscar Lucas accepts our offer in week 5. Cash is getting some big offers for 3 and 4 year deals, but we stand pat with our 1 year offer. He’s likely to retire any time, and we don’t want to be stuck eating his remaining bonus. We lose out, and Tennessee signs him to a 3/30.82 contract. This is a tough loss, as he is a fan favorite, but we still feel that Tennessee made a big mistake and will likely take a big cap hit when Cash retires. There is a silver lining, as we are able to offer LB Adam Sampson a 1/7.27 contract, which he accepts in week 8. In week 9, Stewart signs with the Redskins for 4/37.56. For some insurance at safety, we sign 2nd year FA Lance Hoffman (14/54) to a 2/3.52 bonus free deal. He’s not starting material, but we need some bodies at this position. We breathe a sigh of relief as Tampa Bay busts their cap on S Rodney Clemonts (49/53), and we sign him to a 3/15.32 deal. We immediately release Hoffman. Sorry Mr. Hoffman, but this is big business, and that’s the unfortunate reality of the salary cap. In week 20, we pull somewhat of a defensive coup, signing All-Pro DE Ronald Sammons (55/56) to a 4/30.14 contract. He’s a bit weak against the run, but he’s a ferocious pass rusher. He had a NFC leading 18 sacks last season. We’ll move Mercury Lewis to the strong side and let Sammons tee off on the quarterback. After the 20 step process, we come to terms with our franchise player, Mercury Lewis, and resign him to a 4/41.03 contract. This leaves two restricted free agents for us to resign, center Vinny Barton and punter Morris Salinas. We’ll wait until after the draft to resign them. |

After the draft, we resign RFA center Vinny Barton to a 3/18.74 contract, and we resign punter Morris Salinas to a 1/1.58 contract. For our special URFA, we sign LB Mack Horst (20/52) to a 7/12.06 contract. We sign nine URFA’s to one-year deals, and head to camp. Here is our postcamp roster:
We go 3-1 during pre-season, resting our "difference makers". Our quarterback of the future, Todd Heiden, gets most of the snaps in preseason, and he puts up some impressive numbers considering we held out our two best WR's. Heiden finishes preseason hitting 39 out of 60 for 471 yards, 4 TD's and 2 INT's, for a QB rating of 97.3. Rookie QB Reuben Conway will be our 3rd string QB this season, and he does well in preseason, hitting 32 out of 59 for 364 yards, 3 TD's and 1 INT, for a rating of 82.9. We only suffer one injury, backup LB Ricky Batchelor will miss 2 to 3 months with a broken jaw. [ 04-29-2001: Message edited by: Vegas Vic ] |

Roosevelt Blades catches 2 TD passes. Maine (3-0) 32 at Atlanta (0-3) 20 Kennedy Oliver steals the spotlight, as the seventh year veteran scampers for 174 yards and 2 TD’s on 19 carries. Johnny Kaye throws 2 interceptions, one of which is returned 79 yards for a touchdown. New Orleans (2-2-1) 13 at Maine (4-1)31 Kennedy Oliver has the finest rushing performance of his seven year career, as he runs for 185 yards and 1 TD on 19 carries. Johnny Kaye hits 21 out of 36 for 226 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Tampa Bay (5-0) 20 at Maine (5-1) 19 Well, the game gets off to a bad start even before the opening kickoff, as the thermometer reads 67 degrees, much to the delight of the Buccaneers. They score the winning touchdown on a four yard pass from Sedrick Hoover to Brandon Sanford with 28 seconds left in the game. Maine (5-2) 29 at San Francisco (2-5) 23 (OT) Johnny Kaye ties the game late in the 4th quarter on a 2 yard TD run, then he hits Johnnie Orosco on a 9 yard TD pass in overtime for the win. Kennedy Oliver slashes his way for 140 yards on 27 carries. Kaye throws 3 TD passes, but that is offset with 2 costly interceptions. St. Louis (5-3) 21 at Maine (6-2) 49 A festive Monday night crowd delights in the Moose rout, as Johnny Kaye shreds the Rams’ secondary for 27 completions in 33 attempts for 331 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Oliver rushes for 83 yards and 3 TD’s on 21 carries. Unfortunately, we lose All-Pro tight end Reuben Floyd for the rest of the season with a stretched knee ligament. The burden now falls on rookie Devin Allan, our 2nd round draft choice. Kansas City 14 (4-5) at Maine(7-2) 22 We win, but suffer another huge injury, as starting running back Kennedy Oliver breaks his foot, and will miss 3 to 5 weeks. This is a real shame, as the veteran had really come into his own this season, averaging over 100 yards per game. Kaye picks up the slack, hitting 23 out of 34 for 300 yards and 1 TD. Atlanta (1-9) 3 at Maine (8-2) 44 The score looks impressive at first glance, but when tempered with the fact that the Falcons are the worst team in the NFL, it’s not so impressive. Johnny Kaye hits 15 out of 24 for 233 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Sedrick Flowers does an admirable job filling in for Oliver, rushing for 130 yards on 23 carries. Our much maligned secondary has its finest performance of the season, intercepting 4 passes and giving up only 149 passing yards. Carolina (7-3-1) 24 at Maine (9-2) 30 (OT) Johnny Kaye hits Wes Corbett on a 4 yard TD pass with 52 seconds left in regulation, sending the game into overtime. Sedrick Flowers scores on a 14 yard run to win the game. Our injury situation worsens, as starting tackle Riddick Joseph is lost for the remainder of this season and perhaps next season with “severe depression”. Needless to say, this deals a huge blow to our postseason hopes. Maine (10-2) 19 at St. Louis (7-5) 12 Herb Sullivan scores on a 94 yard TD return with 8 seconds left in the game. The Rams had tied the game 12-12 on Donnie Wheeler’s 19 yard field goal. Our running game is shut down, but Johnny Kaye plays a mistake free game, hitting 20 out of 27 for 197 yards. Montreal (8-5) 30 at Maine (8-2) 38 The defenses for both teams take the night off, as a Monday night national television audience sees a combined 811 yards of total offense. We get some good news after the game, when Reuben Floyd and Kennedy Oliver are declared “probable” for next week. Maine (12-2) 24 at Detroit (7-7) 17 We are delighted to mathematically eliminate the Lions from the playoffs, as they beat us in the NFC Championship last season. We lock up the #1 seed in the NFL, and we’ll rest our starters next week against Carolina. Maine (13-2) 22 at Carolina (10-4-1) 16 (OT) Backup quarterback Todd Heiden gives Moose fans a glimpse of the future, as he hits 23 out of 36 for 265 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Heiden hits backup WR Dana Warren on a 62 yard TD pass in overtime to win the game.

Arizona 26 at Maine 27 Derrick Kaplan boots a 51 yard field goal with 20 seconds left, to send the Moose to the NFC Championship game. The Moose overcome a career high 6 interceptions by Johnny Kaye. Tampa Bay 40 at Maine 48 Johnny Kaye atones for his horrid performance last week, hitting 23 out of 34 for 265 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. This one was a real shootout, with the Moose leading 34-17 going into the 4th quarter. The gametime temperature was 36 degrees, much to Tampa Bay’s delight. Los Angeles 13 at Maine 38 Kennedy Oliver rushes for 130 yards and 1 TD on 26 carries to lead the Moose to their record ninth Superbowl win. In perhaps his last game in a Moose uniform, Johnny Kaye hits 15 out of 20 for 171 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s before yielding the reigns to the quarterback of the future, Todd Heiden. 2037 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2036: 100/74/100/100 Overall: 98 Riddick Joseph announces his retirement after missing the last half the ’36 season with “severe depression”. We will take a bit of a cap hit due to his unexpected departure. We made a profit of $810.3 million last year, a 10% increase from the previous season. We welcome Coach Klingler back for another season. We resign our lead scout, Carlton Lynn, to a 2/2.0 contract. Our fan loyalty remains at 100, and for the first time in years, we are able to raise our ticket prices 10% across the board, because we won the Superbowl and New England increased their prices substantially, well above our prices. Here is our offseason roster:
We designate tackle Justin Beeston as our franchise player. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contracts: WR Roosevelt Blades 4/39.31, TE Rueben Floyd 2/9.15, RB Kennedy Oliver 4/35.03, S Herb Macri 3/19.64. |

Including our franchise player, T Justin Beeston, we have 7 UFA’s this season; QB Johnny Kaye, K Derrick Kaplan, LB Donnie Farrell, WR Johnnie Orosco, P Morris Salinas, and LB Adam Sampson. This will be one of those landmark years in the history of the franchise, as we say farewell to 40 year old Johnny Kaye and turn the reigns over to 24 year old Todd Heiden. Kaye is asking for about $28 million this season. We anticipated this, and we will let him finish out his illustrious career with another team. 42 year old kicker Derrick Kaplan wants to play another season, and we will do our best to resign the All-Pro kicker who has won so many games for us on last second field goals. Farrell, a two time All-Pro and Superbowl MVP, is the anchor of our linebacking corps, is a must have player. Sampson, the 14 year veteran, isn’t worth big money anymore, but we’ll see if he drops his demands to a more reasonable level. We would like to resign Orosco to keep our receiving corps intact. Salinas is a good punter, and we’ll try and resign him, also. The only offer we make in Week 1 is a 1/3.30 offer to Kaplan. In week 3, we offer a 3/27.73 deal to Farrell. We are shocked when Denver signs him to a 2/20.60 deal. We regroup and offer Raleigh UFA LB Marc Bridges (64/64) a 4/40.65 contract. Also, in week 4 we offer Orosco a 2/20.82 contract. Cincinnati resigns their starting QB Ted Sockanathan to a 3/62.82 contract, then they offer their backup QB Todd Vance a 6/154.51 contract. I guess they figure on having two veteran QB’s and 51 URFA’s this year. In week 7, Johnny Kaye signs a 4/106.64 contract with Tampa Bay. Kaplan is being rather stubborn, so we lower our offer to 1/3.19 and he signs in week 8. In week 9, we lose Johnnie Orosco to Baltimore for 3/34.16. In week 11, we really beef up our linebacking unit, as we sign Mel Ferguson (64/83) to a 3/21.50 contract. In week 13, we resign punter Salinas to a bonus free 2/3.72 contract. In week 14, we sign 2nd year center Tom Groves (19/60) to a bonus free 3/3.88 contract. In week 20, we sign 2nd year DE Lee Van Buren (21/49) to a 2/8.71 contract. After the 20 step process, we resign our franchise player, Justin Beeston, to a 4/33.40 deal. [ 04-30-2001: Message edited by: Vegas Vic ] |

DRAFT
After the draft, Cincinnati offers us their 3rd round pick next year and WR Clay Terrell (44/44) for G Trent Clemmons. It checks out as legit. We are deep at the guard position, and the WR position is a need with the loss of Orosco, so we accept the offer. For our special URFA, we sign WR John Lane (34/50) to a 7/12.32 contract. We resign the following RFA’s: QB Jay Hammond 3/11.74, CB Britt Stargell 3/17.24. We release CB Horace Sullivan. This leaves us with only 4 URFA’s to sign to get our roster to 53. We head to camp, and here is our post-camp roster:
This is probably our weakest roster in over a decade. We should make the playoffs, but another Superbowl would be a stretch with this group. We have 99,900 season ticket holder with high expectations. |

REGULAR SEASON
St. Louis 9 at Maine 41 The Todd Heiden era gets underway with a bang on a Monday night packed house at Fairchild Stadium. Heiden completes 20 out of 27 for 254 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 73 yards and 1 TD on 18 carries, and he catches 5 passes for a whopping 112 yards and 1 TD. Our defense limits the Rams to just 30 rushing yards. Maine (1-0) 13 at Chicago (1-0) 3 This one turns out to be a defensive struggle, with the only touchdown coming on a 5 yard TD pass from Heiden to Trevor Hudson in the 4th quarter. Oliver rushes for 85 yards on 23 carries, and Heiden completes 19 out of 30 for 178 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Maine (2-0) 41 at Atlanta (1-1) 38 We’re up comfortably 41-24 late in the 4th quarter, but Atlanta scores two TD’s in the final three minutes to make it close. Todd Heiden hits 24 out of 33 for 233 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Oliver leads the ground attack, rushing for 143 yards on 26 carries. We lose starting LB Mark Bridges for a couple of weeks with a bruised sternum. Maine (3-0) 17 at San Francisco (1-2) 37 Todd Heiden throws 5 interceptions in a horrid performance. We lose starting CB Charlie Rivers for 3 to 5 weeks. New Orleans (3-2) 20 at Maine (3-1) 28 Heiden redeems himself, hitting 16 out of 22 for 286 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. Oliver rushes for 100 yards on 18 carries. Maine (4-1) 34 at St. Louis (2-3-1) 20 Our season pretty much comes to an end, as franchise QB Todd Heiden is lost for the season, and perhaps for his career, with a compound leg fracture. He ends the season with 11 TD passes and a 92.4 QB rating. If that isn’t bad enough, second string QB Reuben Conway gets hurt, and he is questionable for next week’s game. We place Heiden on IR, and sign 2nd year FA Floyd Fickle (18/40) to a 1/1.53 contract. Carolina (4-2) 9 at Maine (5-1) 28 Third string QB Jay Hammond gets the start, and he hits 23 out of 32 for 258 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 172 yards on 21 carries. Maine (6-1) 16 at Buffalo (3-4) 21 We outgain the Bills 313 to 177 and lose the game. San Francisco (3-5) 24 at Maine (6-2) 7 Reality starts to settle in that without Heiden, we’re probably going to be a rather average team this season. Atlanta (4-5) 10 at Maine (6-3) 31 Second string QB Reuben Conway returns after being injured for four weeks. He has a lackluster performance, 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. Kennedy Oliver rushes for 123 yards and 1 TD on 13 carries. N.Y. Jets (6-4) 7 at Maine (7-3) 16 Oliver rushes for 123 yards and 2 TD’s, and our defense plays a fine game. Tampa Bay (9-2) at Maine (8-3) Before the season started, this Monday night game was hyped as being the return of Johnny Kaye to face his old team, lead by the young upstart, Todd Heiden. In a cruel twist of fate, Heiden was lost for the season with a possible career ending injury, and Kaye has been relegated to sitting on the bench behind Sedrick Hoover. In the game, Kennedy Oliver leads the Moose to victory, rushing for 136 yards and 1 TD on 19 carries. Maine (9-3) 20 at Carolina (6-6) 17 Backup QB Conway hits 22 out of 33 for 257 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Maine (10-3) 17 at New Orleans (9-4) 24 Drew Perez scores on a 69 yard TD run for the Saints late in the 4th quarter. Maine (10-4) 21 at Philadelphia (4-10) 28 This game is an excellent summation of the state of this team, as we lose to an Eagles team that has already been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. We lose our second string QB, Reuben Conway for the remainder of the season with a stretched knee ligament, so we place him on IR along with starter Heiden. We sign URFA QB Calvin Walsh (21/30) to a 1/850K contract. New England (10-5) 7 at Maine (10-5) 17 Kennedy Oliver rushes for 92 yards and 1 TD, and our defense steps up in a “must win” game. We get the #3 seed in the NFC, which in retrospect probably isn’t bad considering we played most of the season with our 3rd string QB.

Arizona 35 at Maine 41 Kennedy Oliver rushes for 202 yards and 1 TD on 23 carries. We outgain the Cardinals 400 to 271, but three costly interceptions from third string QB Jay Hammond keep them in the game. Maine Punter Morris Salinas kicks a 30 yard field goal with 59 seconds left in the game. Continuing in the “Twilight Zone” theme of this season, kicker Derrick Kaplan is injured and is doubtful for next week’s game. Maine 3 at Tampa Bay 30 We advance about as far as possible with a third string QB. Our main concern at this point is the future of Todd Heiden. We don’t yet know if he’ll be able to play next season. The New York Giants defeat the Raleigh Copperheads 30-17 to win their third Superbowl, ending a 47 year drought. 2038 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2037: 84/78/100/99 Overall: 94 We have no retirees this season. We raise ticket prices up to 5% where we can, without exceeding New England’s prices. We keep the coach and scout for another season. It is absolutely sickening to look at Todd Heiden’s profile and see some of his potentials in the 50’s and 60’s, where they were all in the 90’s before his injury. Here is our offseason roster:
We designate LB Zach Rex as our franchise player. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contract: CB Charlie Rivers 3/27.53, CB Oscar Lucas 3/27.98, P Morris Salinas 1/1.61. Including franchise player, LB Zach Rex, we have five UFA’s, kicker Derrick Kaplan, G Ernest Darchi, G Rico Sampson, and RB Sedrick Flowers. Darchi and Sampson are average guards, and for what they are asking for, we can do better. 41 year old Kaplan wants to come back, and we will be glad to have him. Flowers isn’t worth big money, he was our special URFA from 7 years ago. In week 5, we sign Raleigh All-Pro guard Nate Tatum (68/82) to a 3/26.69 contract. Also in week 5, we resign K Derrick Kaplan for 1/3.27. In week 7, Buffalo signs Flowers to a 2/22.01 contract. In week 14, we sign G Richard Ursino (58/61) to a 3/18.37 contract. Tatum and Darchi go unclaimed, and we will not resign them now that we are set at the guard position. After the free agency period, we resign franchise player Zach Rex to a 4/31.10 contract. The only restricted free agent that is worthy of resigning is QB Reuben Conway, but he wants about $14 million per season, way too much. So, we head into the draft with 37 players signed, and about $19 million under the cap. Our projected cap cost is about $11 million for our 8 draft picks, which leaves us about $7 million to sign 8 URFA’s plus a bit of injury insurance money for the regular season. |

REGULAR SEASON
Baltimore 7 at Maine 34 Kennedy Oliver rushes for 140 yards and 1 TD on 19 carries. Our defense sacks Ravens’ QB Dunlap four times and holds him to 177 yards on just 17 out of 44 attempts with three interceptions. San Francisco (1-0) 16 at Maine (1-0) 27 It’s obvious that Todd Heiden is just a shadow of what he was before his compound leg fracture. He throws three interceptions in this game, but the Moose are able to overcome it for the win. St. Louis (2-0) 24 at Maine (2-0) 27 (OT) Ian Hambrick scores on an 18 yard TD run late in the fourth quarter to tie it, then ageless Derrick Kaplan kicks the game winning 49 yard field goal in OT. Maine (3-0) 23 at Cincinnati (1-2) 17 Our running backs combine for 164 yards rushing. Heiden has another lackluster performance, 1 TD and 1 INT. His QB rating stands at a mediocre 70.2. I hate to keep reiterating this, but it is absolutely sickening to see this after all that we invested to draft this guy. He had all of the potential to be one of the all-time greats. Now, after his devastating injury, he’s just an average QB. Maine (4-0) 27 at Atlanta (1-3) 33 Todd Heiden throws an interception in OT, which Brett Burton runs back 12 yards for the TD and the win. Carolina (1-3) 13 at Maine (4-1) 37 Our defense comes up big in this one, as LB Zach Rex runs back an interception 33 yards for a TD. Our backs combine for 218 yards rushing. Our best offensive lineman, guard Nate Tatum, is lost for the season with a dislocated knee. Atlanta (3-4) 16 at Maine (5-1) 30 Oliver rushes for 113 yards and 1 TD on 21 carries, as the Moose overcome another anemic performance from Heiden, whose QB rating now stands at a putrid 75.0. New Orleans (3-5) 9at Maine (6-1) 37 Our defense makes life miserable for Saints’ QB Clarence Barokas, sacking him 5 times and intercepting him twice, one of which is returned for a 65 yard TD by Oscar Lucas. Green Bay (5-3) 14 at Maine (7-1) 17 The Packers keep it close, thanks to two costly interceptions by Heiden, one of which is returned for a TD. Our defense holds the Packers to just 198 total yards. Our injury situation has gotten worse every week, and now it has reached the critical stage:
Maine (8-1) 24 at San Francisco (4-5) 30 Todd Heiden loses this one for us, as he throws an interception on the last play of the game that is returned 88 yards for a touchdown. Maine (8-2) 16 at St. Louis (8-2) 17 Rams’ QB Pat Hammett hits Donnie Wheeler on a 5 yard TD pass with 34 seconds left in the game. N.Y. Giants (6-5) 6 at Maine (8-3) 34 Our defense holds the Giants to just 208 total yards. Maine (9-3) 19 at New Orleans (6-6) 13 (OT) Todd Heiden throws the winning TD in overtime, to help offset his two costly interceptions thrown during regulation. Maine (10-3) 31 at Tampa Bay (8-5) 34 We score 10 points in the last 2:30 to make the game appear closer than it really is. Maine (10-4) 35 at Jacksonville (8-6) 9 We get some of our injured players back in the lineup, and it really makes a difference. Oscar Lucas comes up with 2 big interceptions to lead the defense. Maine (11-4) 27 at Carolina (4-11) 7 Kennedy Oliver and Ian Hambrick each rush for over 100 yards, and Oscar Lucas runs back an interception for a TD to lead the defense. We hold the Panthers to just 106 passing yards. We finish at 12-4, which is only good enough for the #4 seed in the NFC.

2039 SEASON
Herb’s score from 2038: 73/77/100/100 Overall: 92 We have two retirees this season, kicker Derrick Kaplan and defensive end Mercury Lewis. Kaplan is a shoo-in for Canton on the first ballot. We made a profit of $664.9 million last season, down 6% from the previous year. We resign Coach Klingler to a 3/18.0 contract, keeping him the highest paid coach in the NFL. Our scout’s contract is up, and he’s getting old, so we look to 41 year old James Welch, whom we sign to a 4/1.50 contract. His ratings are V/F/V/E/F/V/G/G/V. We bump up our ticket prices 5%, except where it would exceed New England’s prices. Here is our offseason roster:
We designate DT Ricky Branch as our franchise player. We renegotiate the contracts of the following players in the final year of their current contracts: LB Mel Ferguson 4/33.29, S Herb Macri 3/17.83. We release T Pete Coles, WR Clay Terrell, WR Trent Byers, and LB Mark Bridges. We take about a $2.5 million cap hit next year by releasing Bridges, but there's no way we can justify having him as our 2nd highest paid player, especially since 2nd year LB Darrell Goulet is ready to start in his place. We will make an effort to resign Floyd, Barton, Kiani and Childs. The other players would not be starters for us this season, and are not worth resigning for big money. Salinas has turned out to be an average punter, so we will look for the second stage of free agency or the draft for a punter. In week 3, we resign Floyd for 1/6.95. We make an offer to Barton for 2/14.15. In week 5, Tennessee signs Kiani for 4/63.45. In week 6, Detroit signs Barton to a 2/18.03 deal. Also, in week 6 we find a temporary replacement for retired DE Mercury Lewis, 14 year Jacksonville veteran Broderick Hamilton (71/72), who signs a 1/9.65 deal with us. In week 7, Wright signs a 3/42.45 contract with the 49ers. In week 9, Cleveland signs Childs to a 4/53.46 contract, much more than we were willing to pay. In week 10, Salinas signs a 2/5.35 contract with Miami. In week 11, we sign Patriots WR Tommie Mahovlich (62/62) to a 3/38.74 contract. We sign 2nd year T Damon Williamson to a 3/7.07 contract. Hurst signs with Tampa Bay for 4/19.99. In week 13, Clements signs with Dallas for 2/13.87. In week 14, we sign 18 year kicker Artie Singleton to a 1/2.62 contract. Before the draft, we resign franchise player Ricky Branch to a 4/43.31 contract. |

DRAFT
We resign DT Earnest McGuire to a 3/12.17 contract. For our special URFA, we sign QB Cary Ayanbadejo to a 7/12.50 contract. We resign RFA RB Ian Hambrick to a 4/39.65 contract. We fill out our roster to 53 and head to camp. Here is our post camp roster:
We go 4-0 during preseason. Unfortunately, we lose our best linebacker, Mel Ferguson, for 2 to 3 months. [ 05-04-2001: Message edited by: Vegas Vic ] |

REGULAR SEASON
Carolina 41 at Maine 35 Rod Serling would have been the perfect play by play announcer for the last portion of this game. Carolina ties the game on two fumble returns for touchdowns late in the fourth quarter, then Cory Reagor runs back the opening kickoff in overtime 103 yards for the winning touchdown. Maine (0-1) 24 at San Francisco (0-1) 30 Heiden throws two costly interceptions. Ian Hambrick rushes for 104 yards on 17 carries in a losing effort. Atlanta (2-0) 26 at Maine (0-2) 52 Hambrick rushes for 91 yards and 3 TD’s, and Heiden throws for 362 yards, 3 TD’s and 3 INT’s. Maine (1-2) 18 at St. Louis (1-2) 13 Artie Singleton boots 4 out of 4 field goals in this defensive struggle. New Orleans (2-2) 6at Maine (2-2) 33 Todd Heiden has his first good game of the season, hitting 29 out of 41 for 337 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 INT’s. We outgain the Saints 450 to 229. We are happy to see LB Mel Ferguson upgraded to “probable”, after missing the first five games with an injury. San Francisco (2-3) 6 at Maine (3-2) 45 We get revenge against the hated 49ers for the earlier loss. Heiden has another fine game, hitting 15 out of 21 for 262 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Perhaps he is regaining his pre-injury form, but only time will tell. Maine (4-2) 20 at New Orleans (2-4) 27 Looks like I jinxed Heiden with the glowing tribute last week. He throws two interceptions in the loss. Maine (4-3) 41 at Atlanta (2-5) 6 Heiden hits 26 out of 34 for 350 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our defense plays its best game of the season, holding Atlanta’s QB’s to 14 out of 31 for 160 yards and 3 INT’s. Philadelphia (6-2) 10 at Maine (5-3) 51 We are finally beginning to show some signs of consistency after a shaky start to the season. Heiden has a flawless game, hitting 22 out of 28 for 315 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Ian Hambrick rushes for 135 yards on 15 carries. Maine (6-3) 30 at Arizona (4-5) 25 We win, but suffer two devastating season ending injuries to tackle Justin Beeston and fullback Roderick Farmer. Our offense will suffer, because there is a huge dropoff in talent with their replacements. We place Beeston on IR, and sign 2nd year tackle Mercury Skelly (22/25) to a 1/1.02 contract. St. Louis (2-8) 18 at Maine (7-3) 45 Our running backs combine for 183 yards on 35 carries. We outgain the Rams 507-286. Maine (8-3) 20 at Carolina (6-5) 13 Hambrick grinds out 108 yards on 24 carries and Heiden plays a mistake free game, hitting 18 out of 29 for 218 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Maine (9-3) 17 at Denver (8-4) 3 We get a huge road win against one of the best teams in the AFC. Hambrick rushes for 99 yards on 27 carries, and Heiden has a workmanlike 14 out of 21 effort, for 145 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Minnesota (7-6) 3 at Maine (10-3) 30 Heiden hits 22 out of 36 for 295 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. We suffer yet another season ending injury, as starting RB Ian Hambrick dislocates his knee. Backup Kennedy Oliver comes off the bench and rushes for 131 yards on 27 carries. Our defense absolutely smothers the Vikings, holding them to 113 total yards. Kansas City (10-4) 3 at Maine (11-3) 26 Former Moose backup quarterback Howie Hicks gets a rude reception from the Moose defense, as he goes a paltry 12 for 26, 159 yards and 2 INT’s. Hicks was a backup for several years to the legendary Johnny Kaye, but we were forced to release him in 2034 and he was signed by the Chiefs. He has become one of the best QB’s in the league, but this day belongs to Todd Heiden, who hits 20 out of 35 for 256 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Oliver adds 83 yards on 18 carries. Both of our fullbacks are doubtful for next week’s game, so we move backup TE Devin Allan to fullback. Maine (12-3) 10 at Oakland (5-10) 14 We make an effort to win, because it will give us the #1 seed in the NFL. Unfortunately, we play a poor game and come up short.

PLAYOFFS
Carolina 7 at Maine 41 A packed house of 99,900 brave the 12 degree weather and watch the Moose take the Panthers apart. The weather doesn’t affect Todd Heiden, who hits an incredible 26 out of 30 for 415 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our running backs combine for 146 yards rushing. The defense turns in another dominant performance, holding the Panthers to just 161 total yards. Detroit 3 at Maine 37 Heiden hits 23 out of 35 for 284 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Our running backs combine for 140 yards on 26 carries. Our defense holds the Lions to 181 total yards. New England 16 at Maine 7 On a snowy 14 degree day, Patriots’ All-Pro quarterback Jason Mueller leads his team to the Super Bowl title, hitting 26 out of 38 for 234 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Heiden has a horrible performance in the big game, going 12 out of 28 for 119 yards and 2 INT’s. The loss can’t detract from the accomplishments of the team this season, as they weren’t expected to be a Super Bowl contender. AWARDS QB Todd Heiden, 1st team All-Pro TE Reuben Floyd, 1st team All-Pro WR Tommie Mahovlich, 1st team All-Pro K Artie Singleton, 2nd team All-Pro |
