The 4th of July is like one super-slow home run trot around the bases as the English stare us down from the mound. Suck it England!

And Keira Knightley, Liz Hurley, and Katherine Zeta Jones. (I was going to also say Emma Watson but I am not sure if she is British or if I just assume she is because of Harry Potter)

You're welcome. The 4th of July is kinda cool imho, bit like Guy Fawkes (Bonfire) night back home really .... *Bit hard to get upset about ancient history really, especially seeing as we've managed to own and give up most of the globe at some point during history - not bad for a small island with notoriously dodgy weather really ... now if we could just learn how to play some of the sports we invented properly** I'd be REALLY happy **Bitter about Englands woeful World Cup performance, who me? |

Can someone explain the decision to have that Craig Ferguson guy host the Boston Pops show last night? I don't know enough about him to know whether he's an American citizen or not, but even if he is, I don't need to listen to a guy with his accent walking us through the July 4th fireworks. I realize CBS is starved for personalities, but c'mon.

I believe this is also his 3rd year hosting? And he has what I guess is a highly rated show? I guess we should let Larry the Cable host it next year

An immigrant who is American?!!!
I'm shocked! I thought that all Americans were white guys with Southern accents!

I don't care if he's an American, I don't want to listen to the accent on July 4th. I don't even know if the guy was British, frankly. I didn't watch the show anyway, I just passed by it. It was a temporary refuge from PBS, where, to my horror, I landed on Bo Duke singing When the Saints Come Marching In, in some bizarre lounge act style. That had even less to do with the 4th of July than a British-accented moderator of the Boston Pops.

Heck yea I'm serious. Love Benny Hill. Been watching it since I was a kid (I'm pushing 40 now) and every time I hear the theme song, I still laugh. I don't think a whole lot of people in America 'got' the comedy genius that he was.

Good thing they didn't do the show in Arizona or they would have harassed him...oh wait, he doesn't have dark skin. Never mind.

I thought Craig Ferguson was pretty outspoken about how proud he was to live here, and such.
He was standing right next to Toby Keith singing along with all of the patriotic songs, and couldn't have looked happier to be there hosting the show. I thought it was actually pretty cool of CBS to ask him to host the show, considering his relatively new American status.

I don't know anything about Craig Ferguson other than he was on Drew Carey's show 10-15 years ago. That's the last time I paid any attention to him until the other night (I don't watch late night shows).
It's not a huge deal, since I only saw about a minute of the show anyway. My honest reaction was that the whole thing was kinda weird and off-putting. But then again, I had just seen Bo Duke singing on PBS, so I wasn't in a great frame of mind at that point anyway...

Yup. Made people laugh on a consistent basis. So, he wasn't 'edgy' or was like George Carlin or as verbose as Monty Python. He was raunchy, but, in a somewhat sly way and got away with it on tv and it was funny. Nothing wrong with some good old fashioned slap stick and he did it exceedingly well.

Interesting. Thinking about it, I once read that Benny Hill was appreciated in the US, but never heard anyone 'owning up' to it. I don't mean to sound like I'm being dismissive or anything, but I think that over here Benny Hill is regarded as being very much a product of his time ... To be honest, I never got the appeal of Monty Python either. |
