TV shows onto DVD

I have a question for you tech-savvy guys.

I want to be able to record TV programs onto DVD and I want them to be as high quality as possible. I also want to be able to edit out commercials, etc.

What is the best way to go about this?

I have a Comcast DVR, and one of the things I was contemplating was just trying to transfer the shows from that to my computer, but then I thought that it might make more sense to just turn my computer into a DVR. I'd like to keep from spending too much more money, too!

Here are some of my computer specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3500
2 Gig RAM
300 gig hd
Nvidia 6800 GT videocard

Thanks! I'd appreciate any help you can give.

Here's a site I used when I looked into bulding my own DVR. There are some serious advantages, namely being able to boost the size of the HD to whatever size you want, use digitial editing software and burn DVDs.

The drawback is that it doesn't seem like something I would want to do to my everyday computer. I think you'd be better off buying a shell and adding only the components you need -- video card, hard drive, software -- than jacking up your everyday system to do this.

You just need to proper software. You need some authoring tools to build the menus and such. And if you dont record the video into an Mpeg format, you will need some software to convert the files into Mpeg. Check out Doom9 for some resources. Or just do a search in google for DVD guides, there is a wealth of information.
