How do you pronounce "Xavier"?

I have always pronouned it like ex-zave-ier, but on the radio today they were debating whether it is ex-zave-ier or just zave-ier. I looked it up in the dictionary, and they prounounce it zave-ier. What have you always said?

I was going to go to ex-zave-e-er to learn to play the ex-zy-low-fone but I couldn't because there are too many foreigners and I'm an ex-zeen-oh-fobe.

Based on the above, I think zave-yer is correct. Just my $0.02

Zave-ier

I do like using the spanish pronounciation of "hawv-ier" at times, though.

Well The whole discussion on the radio was becasue they were bringing Xavier McDaniel on to talk about his basketball days with the Sonics back in the 80s. He said that he pronounced it Ex-zave-ier.

I believe it's originally a Basque name, and the first letter is somewhere in between z, zh, and sh.

In Spanish it's more like Chavier, AFAIK.

Please correct if I'm mistaken.

Um, if it's somebody's name, isn't it kind of up to them how you pronounce it?

"Hi, my name is Ex-avier!"
"Hmm, no, I'm sorry, you're incorrect..."
