I Miss Frank Thomas

Or at least my interest in baseball, in which he had a starring role: yesterday he set the MLB record for home runs by a designated hitter. He's 4 away from 500 (the new record is 244), is a guaranteed Hall of Famer, and used to be the best hitter in baseball. Anyway, I enjoyed hearing about this, and thought some others might as well.

Frank Thomas Sets Record in Jays Loss

A big blast from the Big Hurt wasn't enough for the Toronto Blue Jays as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre.

The loss spoiled a milestone home run for Blue Jays slugger Frank Thomas, who broke Edgar Martinez's major-league record for homers by a designated hitter by blasting the 244th of his career.

Thomas tied the record on May 31 and took sole possession of it when he smacked a third-inning pitch from Nationals starter Micah Bowie into the second deck at Rogers Centre.

It was also the 496th career homer for Thomas, leaving the former first baseman just four away from becoming the 21st player to reach the 500-homer plateau.

"I've been around long enough to accomplish something like that, I'm proud of that," he said. "My thoughts right now are to get this team somehow to .500, then we can really start to roll."

But Thomas's historic blast wasn't enough for the Blue Jays (33-35) to complete a sweep of the three-game interleague series against the Nationals (30-39).

I'm with you. Frank is by far my favorite Baseball player of all time. I grew up a Sox fan, when he was in his prime there wasn't anyone better. I think I even cried the day I found out he left the Sox. But I am glad to see his resurgent career lately.

He nearly hit another one to lead off the 9th which would have made things interesting. Certainly a lot more of The Big Occassional Annoyance this season than The Big Hurt, but fingers crossed for a big second half to the season.

I miss him too As much as I've liked Thome, I'll never forgiven Kenny Williams for letting Frank go.

Beat me to it. His .230 average and 9 homeruns is well worth that huge contract.

he finished 4th in mvp voting last year, which I believe is when he signed the contract.

Definitely one of my favorites back when I cared about baseball. Just a huge guy....someone that you almost gotta be sure he never did any drugs, etc, just cause he was so big from the get go.

No, I think he was with the As last year playing for little money? And then the Jays gave him a big contrat this year because of his performance last year.
