Real life happens once in awhile.

Without further ado,

San Diego State this year starts four juniors and it's lone senior.

PG- Maynard Allen
SG- Stevan Blair (Senior)
SF- Kerry Washington
PF- Mario Roland
C- Damon Brown

Roland is a rebound machine and Washington is probably the best pure scorer in our history. Allen is an established quarterback, Brown fills the middle, and Blair provides needed leadership and is an accomplished rebounder.

A new beginning

Our season begins at home on November 18th against UC Irvine. Anytime you start a season, you will have a mesh period. Hopefully the Aztecs will mesh for game two because they looked lost in game one. We fell 65-63, we should have won by 10. SDSU had two assists the entire night. Add that we went a whopping 18-33 from the charity stripe and well.. Mario Roland had 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Two nights later, we did rebound against SW Missouri State. 70-67. The Aztecs shot 30-56 from the field, paced by Damon Brown's 15 point 6 rebound effort. Mario Roland was solid with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Indiana followed on November 25th. We faced a very stern test. Indiana came west unrated, but they certainly didn't come west untalented. In the end fatigue derailed our super effort and the Hoosiers won 77-75. Stevan Blair led the Aztecs with 16 points and 6 rebounds, Mario Roland, who has a future at some level of pro hoops, had 12 points and 7 boards.

There are times you look at your schedule and think easy win. With the trip to Berkley on their minds in two days, SDSU nearly lost to 0-3 San Diego in our new Farmer John Big Rival game. The way the Aztecs shot free throws, you would have thought that the masons were in town. SDSU was a pathetic 13-33 from the not so charitible stripe. In a game that should have been won with ease, SDSU held on to win 77-75. Keith Washington had a career high 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Mario Roland followed up with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Full of confidence, SDSU trekked up to Berkley for a date with the California Golden Bears. After the end of the evening, it was the Aztecs that were hunted. Cal 83 SDSU 60. SDSU's defense stayed in San Diego as Cal shot 33-52 from the field. Keith Washington followed up his monster effort against San Diego with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Damon Brown had 10 points and 4 boards.

November finishes 2-3. Coach Houston feels good about the overall team effort. December's story and the beginning of conference play tomorrow. Let's just say that SDSU does something that doesn't happen very often.

December brings great hope to San Diego.

Following a reasonable 2-3 start San Diego travels to Valpirasio and wins 71-63. Keith Washington seems to be in a groove dumping in 18 and collecting 7 rebounds. Senior Stevan Blair added 13 and 4. The Aztec defense held Valpo to 1-16 from behind the arc using the vaunted 1-3-1 defense.

San Diego had reasons to think positive on December 6th as it hosted Morehead State. Too bad they couldn't think how to shot. The Aztecs struggled from the field going a whopping 19-52 from the field to get waxed 73-55. Mario Rolan led SDSU with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

San Diego's home stand continued against Cal State-Sacramento. This time SDSU's defense failed at Cal shot 30-44 from the field and lost 74-69. Keith Washington led the Aztecs with 11 points.

After getting pushed around against Tulsa 78-51 on the road, San Diego returned home on the 11th to play Siena. A close game throughout, the Aztecs converted on late free throws and won 67-56. Keith Washington proved just how good of a scorer he is by scoring 16 and collecting 8 rebounds. Stevan Blair had a 10 point night along with 6 rebounds and a assist. SDSU leads the nation with FG% and tonight was no exception as they went 25-51 from the floor.

At 4-6, SDSU felt confident two nights before Christmas when they hosted a very talentd Oklahoma State squad. It was the Cowboys who would take home the early presents however as they shot 30 of 60 from the field and converted late game free throws to hold off the Aztecs 68-57. Keith Washington showed why he has improved on offense and defense by collecting 11 points and rebounds, while adding 2 assists. Backup Guard Dexter Edwards added 10 points.

Christmas fell on a Saturday in 2010 and after SDSU played Fordham, the Rams wished that they were home for christmas. Despite alum Vin Scully rooting for Fordham in the crowd, SDSU displayed a wonderful show of offense and an amazing night from the free throw line hitting 31 of 39 foul shots. Dexter Edwards had a very hot hand off te bench leading the Aztecs with 20 points, Stevan Blair had a 13 point, 3 rebound, 3 assist game as San Diego won 81-74. They close out the non-conference part of the schedule 5-7.

The last game of 2010 saw San Diego open it's Mountain West season at home against Air Force. The traveling and playing over the holiday seemed too much as Air Force outplayed the Aztecs 67-58. Power Forward Mario Roland led SDSU with 10 points and 6 boards.

As a new year dawns, San Diego State is 5-8.

New Years 2011 saw San Diego host Colorado State. The Aztecs were as hot as the midday sun. They blistered the Rams, shooting 31 of 57 from the floor, dominating the whole game winning 80-69. Point Guard Maynard Allen played his finest all around game, 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists. Keith Washington added 15 along with 6 rebounds.

January 5th saw SDSU travel to the Pit in Alberquque to face the Lobos of New Mexico. Rarely, do teams come in and win. Very rarely do teams destroy UNM. Tonight was one of those very rare evenings. UNM never led as the Aztecs reconcoqured New Mexico for one night, 86-61. Keith Washington led with 16 points and 11 boards. Point guard Maynard Allen had 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. San Diego went a whopping 34 for 55 from the floor.

At 7-8 and 2-1, SDSU traveled to Laramie to face a very tough Wyoming club. SDSU left their defense back in Alberquque as Wyoming went 32-55 from the floor. San Diego couldn't hold off a late game surge and fell 77-74. Stevan Blair had a good game with 13 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

Five nights later San Diego faced BYU at home. BYU flustered star Keith Washington and the Aztecs. Washington went 1-7 from the floor, registering just two points as BYU stalled and prevailed 63-61. The Aztec offense came from the center position as Damon Brown and Alex Day had 12 and 10 points respectively.

First place Utah came calling and tore apart SDSU 82-60. Utah's defense forced 18 turnovers. Keith Washington had 15 and new Starter Alex Day had 13 in the losing effort.

After the game, San Diego packed their bags for a long six game road trip, opening against Gonzaga the five murderous conference games on the road. The Zags were a very good team, but flustered early against the SDSU zone. Before the night was through, Gonzaga was held to 1-15 from behind the arc. Gonzaga's defense let San Diego's backcourt run roughshod. Maynard Allen had 19 points and 6 assists while Stevan Blair pumped in 13 as San Diego upset Gonzaga 74-59.

After getting hammered 11 nights earlier at home to Utah, San Diego made the trip to Salt Lake not expecting much. Both the polls had the Utes as the number 24 team in the country. San Diego came in a respectable 8-11 overall and was laying much better than their 2-4 conference record indicated. From the tip, it was a mismatch. Utah's sufficating defense held the Aztecs to only 38 shots in 40 minutes. Unfortunately for Utah, SDSU made 22 of them. Utah never got close as San Diego led wire to wire, 72-60. In one of the finest moments in recent Aztec history, Keith Washington led the Aztec charge with 17 points and 5 boards.

The win put SDSU at 9-11 and more importantly at 3-4 in conference with the momentum of two huge road wins. Hollywood tells us that movies should have happy pleasent endings. So picture in you mind as the plane flight from Salt Lake to San Diego was filled with wonder and glee. Probably the happiest moment since the final four run a few years back. It's mportant to remember the happy times because San Diego ran the table. Or better put, was run under the table. They never won another game all season, dropping some by 2 or 3. They finished at 9-21 after getting crushed again by Utah in the opening round of the Mountain West tourney.

This team fell flat on it's face. Some nights, bad foul shooting, others turnovers, most nights they couldn't stop a mack truck. Whatever, they dropped their last ten.

Utah received the automatic NCT birth, was seeded 6th and lost to St. John's in the second round.

Wyoming was robbed of a spot in the NCT's finishing the regular season 20-9. They showed their dissapointment getting bounced by Jackson State in the opening round of the ACT.

Stats, Honors and our recruit next post.

As Dan Houston, I'm 17-43
