Man with bullet in brain drives himself to hospital

Last updated Monday, Dec. 29, 2005

PORT ORANGE -- A Port Orange man who said he woke up this morning bleeding from a bullet wound to his forehead later drove himself to work, and then to a hospital, where he is undergoing brain surgery, Port Orange police said today.

The man told police he woke up about 4:30 a.m. and noticed blood on his face but didn't know know where it came from. He asked his girlfriend, he said, but she could not explain it. So he washed his face and went back to bed.

When the bleeding continued, the man told police he got up at 6:30 a.m. and drove himself to work to leave a message explaining he was going to the hospital.

The emergency room staff at Halifax Medical Center concluded the man had been shot and called police. After talking to the injured man, they contacted the girlfriend by telephone to tell her they wanted to question her. But when they arrived the house on Orange Avenue, they found her dead with a gunshot wound to the head.

No names have been released yet.

That first part of the story is ok, nothing we haven't come across somewhere else ... but the girlfriend being dead takes it to a totally different level.

Yeah, at first I made a post that I thought she did it. But then I read the end of the story and had to delete that.

He shot her dead then shot himself to cover it up.

Wait...the police contacted her by phone. Screws up that theory.

I think it must be the wacky next-door neighbor. He got tired of constantly hearing them going at it.

Nah she did it, and then offed herself when the police were coming to question her.

She could have shot him, then shot herself out of guilt/remorse. Or they could live right next door to a shooting range. Or Chuck Norris could be involved.

If she was smart, she would have shot a woman of similar stature, and then burned down the building so people thought it was her!

It couldn't been Chuck Norris. He uses roundhouse kicks instead of bullets to kill his victims.

Imagine if she did shoot him, what her thoughts must have been when he was in the bathroom washing his face.

"Honey, I'm bleeding. What's up with that?"

"I dunno, hun. Heh. Erm... It's not like I shot you in the head and you should be dead right now..." Awkward silence.

I've never heard of news-journalonline. Is that a credible outlet?

I picture the girlfriend saying to herself "Holy crap, I can't believe I shot him in the head and it didn't kill him. There must be something jammed in this gun, I think I'll have a look down the barrel and see..."

GF: wait a sec I hear the water in the bathroom.
(silence)
GF (sees BF washing his face and goes back to phone): OMFG! He's still alive and washing his face. Shit... shit.....shit.....

This reminds me of that movie with Tracey Ullman, Keanu Reeves and I think River Phoenix...forgetting the guy in it, maybe Kevin Kline. Where she shoots him while he's sleeping and he keeps waking up and doesn't realize he's been shot. Forgetting the name of the movie, but I went to college with a girl who said it was based on a story that happened to her cousin.

Lo and behold we all watched it, and in the credits mentioned something about her family (at least the same last name, Toto).

The link I posted has been updated a bit:
Quote:
PORT ORANGE -- A man who woke up this morning bleeding from a bullet wound to his forehead later drove himself to work, and then to a hospital, where he was in stable condition this afternoon after undergoing brain surgery, Port Orange police said.

Glen Betterley, 53, of 5267 Orange Ave., told police he woke up about 4:30 a.m. and noticed blood on his face but didn't know know where it came from. He asked his girlfriend, Emma Lorene Larsen, 65, if she was responsible but she could not explain it. So he washed his face and went back to bed.

When the bleeding continued and could not be stopped, Betterley told police he got up at 6:30 a.m. and drove himself to work to leave a message explaining he was going to the hospital.

The emergency room staff at Halifax Medical Center concluded Betterley had been shot and called police. After talking to him, police contacted Larsen by telephone to tell her they wanted to question her. A short time later, officers outside of Betterley's home said they heard a single gunshot. They forced their way into the house and found Larsen dead of an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
WTF? If I woke up with blood covering my face, I'd sure as hell like to know why. If the missus hems and haws about being responsible, I'm definitely not going to get back into bed so she can finish me off once I drift back off to sleep!
