Unhappy Stench in house...please help!

My sister has a horrible stench in her house. It smells like something has died in here. It smells worst in a storage closet, but there is nothing in there. We've used Lysol, Pine-Sol, and holy water, but nothing is working.

Do you have any advice about what we can do? It is pretty rotten right now. It is also smelling bad when she turns the AC on.

Thanks,
Kevin

I hate to say it AZ but it sounds to me like the problem may not be inside the house but rather inside the walls where some small critter has died. And if that's the case, there isn't much to be done except either wait until the scent fades or start tearing out the wall.

Just open the windows...that's all you can do.

It also could be mold.

The stench has been here for about 3 days now. I don't think it is mold...it smells like death. We know it isn't the pet rabbit. Killian the Bunny is alive and hiding under the bed.

Well, the good news (if any) is that the decay smell should subside soon, assuming that is what it is.

Do you live in John Wayne Gacy's old house?

bbor, I was thinking the same thing. Are you SURE your sister isn't a psycopathic serial killer?

My wife is an AVID serial killer watcher. We just watched the movie Gacy last week....the one you have to see cause it is so disturbing is Ed Gein....

Apparently one company is making a buch of Serial killer movies.

So far they have released Gein...Dahlmer,Bundy and Gacy.

They are very good....and creepy.

My ex is pretty into serial killers too. She has a lot of books on them, plus a couple of taped documentaries. I'll have to let her know about these movies.

The Dahmer movie really sucked, IMHO. I was hoping to see some mutilation and canibalism, but that never really happened.

I've heard the Gein movie is good, but I have yet to check it out.

Oh, and if your wife is an "AVID serial killer watcher", I don't think I want you to post that pic after all...

Kevin: Have you had any speech team events there? My limited experience says that high school kids can work up quite a stench.

No. Although my sister was a debater and interper. And yes, they stink. No kids though.

sounds like a dead rodent in a wall, under a floor-board, etc... Unless you have a very good idea where it is, I wouldn't start tearing things apart. Just break out candles, deoderizers, and everything fragrant until it subsides..

good luck.

Homer,

That's what we are doing. Of course, we are having the future in-laws over today for a BBQ. Great day for the stench of death to be in the house

I agree with the dead varmint in the walls theory.

One way to mask the smell would be to cook lots of caramel flavored microwave popcorn. If you do, the smell will permeate the entire house. It is my daughter's favorite treat right now, and the odor is pretty much constant. Whenever we microwave anything, it renews the smell. Wife and daughter LIKE the smell. Maybe you will, too. Try it.

Boil some vinegar water in the microwave and then wipe down the inside with a wet cloth to get rid of microwave smells. If you can smell it, then the taste will also start to permeate the food you put in the microwave.

I say burn incense constantly . The smell will at least hide the odor .

The future in-laws came over. Massive numbers of candles, flowers, a bowl of vinegar in the closet, and some grilled meats kept any odor in check.

Thanks for all of your advice. I guess my sister will just have to wait and see what will happen. Hey, at least I don't live there

Does the interest in this thread and the accompanying poll represent a new low on the board?
