I'm not in this draft, so not sure if it's my place to say, but...is this draft supposed to include "building" deaths? I mean, it's a cool explosion, and an importnat building, and, yeah, there were probably people inside, but not sure you should allow that. Edited: to remove potential pick mentioned, although I'll argue same circumstance as above, and really shouldn't be allowed, IMO.

That's actually a potential pick. Any chance you could edit that out?

Yep, really good pick for this category. Got me thinking, about how folks will be scoring. I see where the picks can all kind of be classed into two sets: A) scenes that are great based on watching the scene (unique method, particularly great acting, special effects, etc.); and B) scenes which are only great if you've watched the movie. Ideally, of course, I'm sure most are trying to be both, but here's a situation where two scenes from Shawshank fit into different categories, for me. The first one that was picked, was definitely a 2nd category pick, I think. Having watched the movie, that whole scene is very poignant and emotional, and makes the pick really good. But for someone who's never seen the movie, I wonder if it just looked like some random old guy who can't take life on the outside and hangs himself. The warden gunshot suicide, on the other hand, I'd expect would score higher for those who've not seen the movie, because the importance of the suicide was explained succinctly in the clip, and because of the tension in the scene itself. Personally, for this reason, I'm weighting the 2nd clip slightly ahead of the 1st. |

Wait, what? I thought the scene where he died was the scene where there was a naked mermaid in his waterbed and he wound up getting sucked into it. Of course, I am old and my memory is fading... Edit: After a second viewing, this might be the same scene but not showing the entire bit...

Very surprised this one is still on the board.

I wouldn't classify serial killers and hitmen as the same thing. But that's just my opinion.

Not a criticism of this pick at all... but I'm curious why you chose this as a heroic death. FYI, this is my favorite movie of all time. I just showed it in my sociology class for deviance (with a huge nod to religion). |

To me, just going back to the same well devalues it. Since it's allowed, it's allowed and that's find. However, I think others that have at least gone to a different category are getting better value. Most likely I am in the minority and people won't look at that, though. Not that I can think of a whole lot of options for suicide. There is a "repeat" movie that I really want to pick, and some I was tempted to take (like the Depp scene for horror), but I'm attempting to avoid it. Anyway, it's just crotchety draft-downer lordscarlet spewing his negativity, ignore me.

Fair enough, but I also think you can make the argument that even if no one took Norton, the Brooks pick could lose some value when there's another very significant suicide in the same movie. |

A couple of reasons actually. the first is the he isthe hero of the piece. and at one time this slot was for hero deaths. I took it to mean thus. But also, his death could be seen as the culmination of his fight against the tyrrany of the prison system. Even if unintended ,he became something of a martyr to the remaining prisoners....or at least to George Peppard's character. |

Stevew has a point about the serial killer/hitman thing, however I think in Anton's case he was much more of a serial killer than a Hitman in the movie. I can't remember if he was contracted or not, but the way that he killed was not very Hitman like...I think he killed for the enjoyment of it. I wouldn't have used Leon in the serial killer category, because he's more of a Hitman. But Anton, I think he qualifies.
btw I know Leon was used earlier, but I believe it was either as a heroic death or explosion death, not Serial Killer.

Fair enough. That's why I stayed away from any light saber battles and other movies with multiple great death scenes (for the most part at least).

(fwiw I am against adding at the end -- people would have strategized differently if they knew it was there. But I don't care either way, particularly since I'm one of the middle picks. )

I used Leon as an explosion death cause there's no way all the cops he took out at the end were bad guys. Not really herioc, even if the Gary Oldman character was a real piece of shit. We needed a revenge death category. |

9.12 - Best Death Television - Ralph Cifaretto (The Sopranos)
Tony and Ralph were partners in a race horse. Ralphie had the stabled burned for the insurance money. He and Tony got into a fist fight over it and the result was Tony pounding Ralph's head into the floor until he was dead. One of the funniest things I have seen on tv is after they took care of the body for disposal, they carried his head around in a bowling ball bag. 10.1 - Best Death Drama - Lt. Col. Matthew Markinson (A Few Good Men) Markinson was going to testify against Colonel Jessup, proving he ordered the 'Code Red' that resulted in Santiago's death. Instead of turn against Col. Jessup, he felt killing himself was a better idea. |
