Almighty Farms Entry: Feline, Favorite, Ursulo, Imperatrice

Site: Arlington

Length: 2400m, considered a very long race.

Weather: Sunny.

Track: Surface is firm.

Surface: Horses will be running on a sand track.

Purse: Total prize money is $1,000,000
  1. $500,000
  2. $200,000
  3. $120,000
  4. $80,000
  5. $60,000
  6. $40,000
It's kind of a letdown with no Triple Crown to win, but here we go with Jewel #3 anyway.

Not a very big field and 3 of the 4 Almighty Farms entries have decent post positions and very good form. Should be a good close to the Triple Crown season.

Two sort of clear favorites for Almighty Farms. Well, more like one with Imperatrice's high starting gate.

King de la Lune may or may not be a favorite due to #1 post position as he is only 11th in the ratings listings. Seems that if any horse not from Almighty Farms should be favored it would by Homme Chichon as the #1 ranked horse for endurance in what is a very long race, especially with his post position #2.

The Race:

Out of the gate King de la Lune is in front with Lutteur de la Bruyere and Homme Chichon following. Man Loss, Feline and Charging Monarch round out the top six.

As they move through the first turn, King retains first by a neck on Homme and 1/2 on Charging and Man. Lutteur and Favorite are 3/4 out with Ursulo seventh, Imperatrice ninth and Feline is tenth.

Down the back straight it's King by 1/2 on Homme and by 1 length on Charging and Ursulo on the rail. Courageous is 1 1/2 out and Man 2 back.

Around the final turn King hangs on by a nose over Homme and a head on Charging while Man is down 1/2. Ursulo and Courageous are 1 length off the pace.

Passing the 400m pole, King is whipped to a 2 length lead on Homme with Ursulo third, back 2 1/2. Man and Charging are 3 back and Happy Woman trails by 3 1/2.

300m to the line, Homme passes a flailing King by 1 length and leads Charging and Ursulo by 2. Man trails by 2 1/2 and Happy by 3.

Down to 200m to go. Homme leads Charging by 1 1/2. Fading King and Man trail by 2. Favorite moves to fifth and Happy is still sixth, 3 lengths back.

100m from the finish line Homme hangs on by 3/4 over Man with Charging now third and King in fourth. Happy moves to fifth and Favorite is sixth, 4 1/2 back.

At the wire, Homme Chichon nips Man Loss by a nose and Charging Monarch is third, back 1/2. King, Favorite and Happy finish in the money.

That sucked. 4 entries and all we could get was a crappy 5th place finish. Nothing to do but move on to the next one.

What was your logic in sending BL and PT to Ascot? Were you thinking that more $$$=more prestiege for the stable?

And after winning the derby and the preakness, it's a little disturbing that your rep hasn't gone up more.

ur, I wish I knew, too. The manual, such as it is, says absolutely nothing about how the stable rankings are figured or, for that matter, even what categories will raise or drop your fame (except for a few things in infrastructure that, early on, will give a small rise to fame score when built or purchased)..

I put BL and PT in the Ascot race for the $$$, not so much for the hoped for stable prestige by itself (like I said, I don't know if that matters much as Almighty Farms is top 10 in all-time winnings but 28th or so in rankings) but to increase the horses value and lifetime gains (if that even matters).

One assumes more money=more rank points, but who knows.

Over the course of her career, BL has been pretty lucky in the post position department compared to many of her stable mates. Not so at Ascot, as the end of the line is not the place you want to be. PT, on the other hand, has one of the best boxes for this race at #4.

Aside from the fact that BL and PT are much better than the rest of the field, at least in terms of straight stats, this is a very strong field with a number of higher than normal quality horses.

PT is an understandable big favorite with the professionals and average wagerer both. Given post position it is not a total shock that BL got ignored, but still, to receive no vote at all is a bit ridiculous, in our estimation.

The Race: Part 1

Out of the gate they are spread across the turf with Monster Intrepido out front. El Darkness is second and BL third way outside. PT is seventh.
As they move through the first turn, it's a mess with 10 horses wide going into the 50 degree turn.

The track at Ascot, at least in this game at this length of a race, has as it's first turn a looping, long 50 degree angle. It can split the field in half and end a horse's day, as we shall see. Because it is the first turn, horses starting in outside post positions that are in the pack get lost.

As you can see, there are 10 horses lined up across the track dead even, basically, going into the turn. #4 is PT and #14 is BL, on the far outside.

The Race: Part 3-Out of the Turn

With the angle of the turn, BL (#14) lost 6 lengths to the leader and, with this game, a horse will go to the inside at any opening until the end of a race. Since the inside is clear, BL goes to the rail, behind the field, and is done for the day.

The Race: Conclusion

Down the back straight Gato leads PT, Harmonie Du conte and Brune Peinture by 1 length with Danube 1 1/2 back and Emir d'Eve off 2. BL is dead last following the curve.

With 500m left in the race, Brune leads Gato by a neck with Harmonie third and PT fourth but stuck on the rail. Norbella Roinville is fifth and Danube sixth. BL is fourteenth.

Passing the 400m pole, Gato retakes the lead by 2 over Norbella and Danube as Brune drops to fourth, 2 1/2 back with Harmonie. Esotico du Logis is sixth while PT falls way back in eighth.

300m to the line, Esotico rockets into first by a nose over Norbella and 3/4 on Gato. Danube stands fourth and Harmonie fifth. You can put a fork in PT and BL.

Down to 200m to go. Danube leads Gato by a neck as Esotico tires to third, 1 length back with Norbella. Harmonie is fifth and Hurry Blanche is sixth.

100m from the finish line Danube leads a charging Harmonie by a neck as Gato drops to third. Esotico, Norbella and Hurry round out the top six.

At the wire, Harmonie Du conte takes the rophy by 3/4 over Danube and Gato a whisker back in third.

Shit a brick!! This was without a doubt the worst racing day in Almighty Farms history, capped off by a last place finish for BL. Time to go home, lick our wounds and get ready for the next week. Fortunately, the Internationals have a couple of weeks off to get their shit together, get a little training in and regain their form.

---> There should be an auction at the end of the month so we need to evaluate whether to sell Ursulo for a better prospect at that time.

---> Fame is at 82 once again and we drop another notch in the stable rankings to 29th.

We made a big mistake with this race as we thought the handicap, along with the higher interval to enter the race, would be a boon to Lodeso. Unfortunately, this didn't happen as, not only are there a number of excellent horses entered, but half the field has 0kg extra weight. As if that's not bad enough, Lodeso drew a crappy post position- 11th of 15.

As feared, Lodeso got off to a poor start and was running eighth, in traffic, down the back straight. Sly Leader and Limo took turns with the lead and in the end, it was Sly Leader edging out Limo by a nose in a very exciting race (exciting if you weren't for Lodeso).

Don't know how she does it- maybe the years crop of 2 year olds is not too strong- but Berry has drawn another weak field, albeit a big one. She is facing all Level III entries with stats in the 40s and 50s. Berry has drawn post position #12 so she needs to break quickly from the gate.

Berry gets off to an incredible start, along with Charming Avalanche, and they lead the field by 5 lengths before the other jockeys decide to start whipping their mounts already as the race is too short to wait. Down the back straight, Berry leads by 1 on Ultimate and by 1 1/2 on a faltering Charming. Berry still leads by 1/2 on Kan Preference with 500m to go. Jocks again go to the rod and rush by Berry with 400m left as Ultimate takes the lead. 300m from the finish, Marcos finally decides to give Berry a shot to the flank and she takes off like trailer trash chasing Tonya Harding. Berry leads by 4 lengths with 200m left and wins by 9 1/2 lengths in a rout.

Author's Note:

I have another bug I've found which could hurt some horses tremendously, most specifically at this time, BL.

You are supposed to have 5 or 6 times a year where you can call on the specialist to shoe your racers which, unless they run every week, should suffice. However, it appears that the game is taking away shoeing efforts from BL and giving them to others each time I have used this feature.

BL now has NO more shoe repairs for the year while others still have 6, though they have been shoed along with BL.Some others have too few and some too many, as well, but only BL is down to none.

We will follow this problem if anything happens but, as of now, BL is about to have bad shoes with no way to get them changed.

7-03-05: Update

  2. Purple Tearse- $2,066,270 (+$6,954)
  3. Artisanale Pour L'Honneur- $2,027,739 (+$138,848)
  4. Joyful Berry- $2,004,040 (-$185,775)
  5. Feline- $1,853,352 (-$42,269)
  6. Imperatrice- $1,787,191 (-$77,797)
  7. Lodeso Des Reves- $1,747,082 (-$185,873)
  8. Favorite- $1,680,747 (+$16,845)
  9. Little- $1,627,065 (+$289,208)
  10. Ursulo- $1,602,426 (-$84,625)
Pregos:
  1. Fleur Des Poetes- $1,394,794 (+$15,658)
  2. Impressive Groomy- $933,874(+$1,631)

The total actual value of Almighty Farms stock is estimated at $22,010,570. This total is actually slightly less than that in our last update.

Little moved up here and there as she had several weeks with no races to run and so was able to train more. Watch for Artisanale to begin her ascent now as she has reached International level and has months of inactivity, race wise, to make dramatic gains.

Ursulo is probably not long for Almighty Farms. You can see from the scant increase in acceleration that with a miniscule discipline rating like his, training progress is negligible, at best. Add the oft discussed form problems associated with said discipline score and you get a horse that has finished out of the money almost every race this year.

Favorite has received the least training of all the older Almighty Farms mounts due to the extra races it took her to reach International level. She still seems to run better than Ursulo, however, plus she is valuable for breeding purposes later, perhaps even next february.

Favorite needs training in all major areas and should have some time upcoming to do so, but she still has a relatively low discipline score and so will be behind the better horses always.

Imperatrice, based only on statistical comparison, should not be doing as well as she is. Some of the factors that we don't understand, or the factors we have not found out about (length of race, track surface, weather, etc...) may be in her favor. Whatever the case, we are pleased with her overall performance to date.

Imperatrice is coming along well given her mediocre discipline rating. We'll just give her a little of this and a bit of that and see where that takes her.

BL is still BL. Her unbeatable luster is fading a bit but that is to be expected the more international races she enters. You can't expect her to dominate like she did in the lower levels, though it would be nice. Plus, her last place finish at Ascot probably says more about that track and its weird layout than anything about the horse.

We could go ahead and get her stats all maxed pretty quickly but we don't see the advantage to that course of action. She is always the top statistical animal in her races, so better #s won't necessarily change anything. We'll just let her do her thing and see where she ends up.

Feline is coming along great given, once again, her mid-level discipline score. She is still a contender in any race and should continue to be so until we decide to put her to foal.

Feline could use some more training in endurance as many of the international races are longer than those at lower levels.

We still think PT will catch BL in terms of stats, though by that time they will be so high it won't matter. Of course, stats don't tell the whole story and BL has a much better winning % than does PT, which we believe will always be the case. That being said, PT is still a great horse and will be a player in races for as long as we have her runing.

PT could maybe use some more adaptation and technique training, though what it really does for a race horse is still not known as many with very low stats in these areas still win all the time.

LIke BL before her, Artis has reached International Level extremely early in her career and in the season. She should be a threat for next years Triple Crown for sure as her very high discipline rating should prove a boon in training. In fact, if we recall, she has no available race until October, giving her 3 solid months to improve.

Artis will get lots of everything, but needs technique and adaptation, for sure, in the next while. Hold your breath and see what her numbers look like at the next update in 3 months.

Lodeso has not been a lucky horse. In fact, with Hold having been sold and Ursulo maybe gone soon, Almighty Farms has had terrible fortune with the male stock we have purchased. Well behind Artis due to fallin ill for weeks and a middling discipline rating, Lodeso also seems to get the toughest fields of any horse alive. We hope he has weathered his bad karma and is about to take off, but we bought him just before we figured out the incredible effect that discipline ratings have in many areas, so don't look for any more purchases with that low affliction, and hope Lodeso proves an animal can succeed despite such a low score.

Lodeso will need lots of acceleration, and some adaptation training, as well.

Berry hasn't been around long, but she has an outstanding race record, an excellent discipline rating and great starting stats. When she gets into higher purse races, she should advance quickly.

The bane of Berry's rise to the top is her troubling injury rating. We knew it was low when we bought her but it has fallen faster than we imagined. The upshot of this is that she will need to be rested often to keep from sustaining a threatening injury and this will retard her progress through training and possibly curtail her racing calendar at times.

A strange case, Little. She was another illness victim for a few weeks and then, inexplicably, having fallen behind her purchase buddy, Berry, she had a time with no available races. This made Little stay at Listed level forever (or at least still) but, as you can see, it also gave her lots of time for training, which she has taken advantage of to make great gains. She is ahead of Berry in all major statistical categories and, with a bit higher discipline score, should be a great horse if she ever has some luck.

Little is in good shape in terms of training. Now, having finally won her first race last week, she just needs to get some more races under her belt to move up, while training everything fairly evenly.

7-03-05: Breeding Update

Impressive Groomy and Fleur Des Poetes are the horses we purchased for breeding purposes only. Though both are International level racers, we have never let them run.

Each was bred last february. They were trained for a few months to give them something to do, but are now too far along in their pregnancies to do any activity at all.

Each will deliver in about 27 weeks, or around January 9, 2006. It is basically a crapshoot whether or not their offspring will be great, good or suck horribly. We wait with baited-breath.

7-03-05: Auction Update

In an historic occurance, the summer auction was so bad that Almighty Farms was forced to pass on all available stock. Horses were all 1 year olds, but there were only 8 of them available and they were either of such low quality, or with a major flaw, so we said "No."

Best of a rotten group:
  1. Dan Tersy- speed: 89.6; acceleration: 84; endurance: 79.7. Unfortunately, this horse came with a discipline score of only 16.4- no way.
  2. Reine du Prelong- speed: 86.2; acceleration: 80.3; endurance: 84.4. While this one had a decent discipline score of 62.5, he also had a bit too low of a resistance score of 43.8.
  3. Sainte Pluie- speed: 86.2; acceleration: 86.5; endurance: 86.5. Solid stats across the board but, again, discipline score of only 57.3, and even lower resistance at 39.6.
While these are some decent to, even, very good starting stats, those of you following along for a while know by now that, at least to us at Almighty Farms, discipline is the single biggest factor in how well a horse will end up after training due to greatly increased training gains per week of training, as well as slower loss of form and greater increase in form with conditioning. We will take no horse not already a monster at birth with a discipline score below 85, basically.

Maybe next time.
