Most of career leaders are first-rounders (as they should be) but there are late-rounders on the board now. The community can tweak it later, but this is a big improvement over 6.0. Beginning upload now. It will be at http://www.younglifenorthlake.com/ootp601c/ in an hour or so. Do yourselves all a favor and save bandwidth (and therefore my upload time) by not clicking on the link until around 3:15pm EDT or so. Heading out!

Maybe after their major league debut this is the case, but I'd say that more pitching prospects are drafted as starting pitchers and are converted to relievers than relief pitchers are drafted and turned into starters.

EDIT: Of course, I think the balance as you describe is probably as good as I can ask for right now.

I just told Markus that it *may* still be a little high-round heavy, but it is a lot better. OK, I *REALLY* need to leave now, but I'm gonna look around just a little more.

Dola, one feature that would really be fun to have in the drafting/prospect arena is Volatility.

Some prospects are considered "raw" (high upside but a big unknown), some are considered more of a sure thing (moderate ability but you know what you're getting).

I certainly wouldn't want it implemented half-assed, but I would like to have to consider drafting the guy with the lower upside but is a safe pick versus always drafting the guy with the most Brilliants (or whatever scale you're using).

+++ OOTP 6.01 Patch released!! +++ The OOTP 6.01 Patch was just released!

Here are the download mirrors:

http://www.mirror1.ootpdevelopments...otp/ootp601.zip
http://www.ootp-leagues.com/files/ootp/ootp601.zip

Simply unzip the new .exe into your OOTP6 main folder!

The following things were fixed or enhanced:
- Added the option to enable home field advantage in the engine setup screen
- Added the option to list all players during the first year player draft
- Added the option to display the play-by-play on the bottom of the game screen instead of the left side
- Improved OOTP 5 league imports
- Improved player development algorythms, making first round picks less predictable
- Adjusted scouting, players with less than 3 years of pro experience now are harder to scout, and the scout
is less likely to make a mistake. Note : This will apply to current leagues, so you may see different
ratings on younger players now with the patch. This does not apply to leagues where scouting is disabled.
- Improved pitching rotation handling
- Improved depth charts logic
- Adjusted calculating of attendance based on fan interest, increasing it slightly
- Pitcher endurance is now displayed if the ability ratings are hidden
- Fixed DL related bugs & crashes
- Fixed Rule 5 Draft related bugs & crashes
- Fixed CSV import/export issues
- Fixed expanded player searches
- Fixed waiver trades bugs
- Fixed various small bugs and glitches

Enjoy!

so, how does the homefield advantage work? Is it a jump in home teams ratings? decrease in away teams ratings? combination? And what are the exact numbers???

It's great to see that Markus has changed drafting, BUT (and it's a big one)...

This means in no-scout mode, things will be EXACTLY the same. I think even in no-scout mode we should still see errors.

I have NO interest in using coaches/scouts - so this change only helps me a little. I either have to play with coaches/scouts, which I hate, or not get the new drafting.

I'm reading those two sentences to be isolated statements, which would mean that you need scouts on to see the new drafting methods.

If everything in the patch works - the answer is a "yes", IMO.

RPI -

I think the comment about scouting being more difficult is only current players. What is making draft picks more varied is the change in the player development algorithm. Therefore there should still be the same variation with scouts off.

DH Bug????

Pinch hitting for DH bug

I just installed the latest OOTP6 patch and now whenever I try to pinch hit for my DH it shows the pinch hitter in the line-up but the original DH still at the plate. It also shows the original DH during that at bat. On the following at bat it changes to the pinch hitter.

2. I *think* (and someone who knows more about the inner workings, please correct me) that when scouts are "off", it really means that everyone's scouting is set to "average"--meaning that all teams still see through a scout's eyes--but it is the *same* scout. Point being, if I am correct in this supposition, the scout error will still apply to leagues when scouts are turned off.

K - thanks for all the responses guys - looks like everything is coming together nicely!

Any insight on how the new dev works, SD?

Thanks again,

I'm not 100% certain, but this is how I *think* it works:

1. Coaches/scouts on, you see all players (yours and those on other team's) through your scout's eyes.

2. Coaches/scouts off, all teams see all players through the *SAME* scout's eyes (still with some potential for error.)

I'm more confident about #1 than #2.

This is how it was in OOTP3 - I know that for sure, but it may very well have changed since.

I was just getting ready to settle in and give this game a run-through since tomorrow is my day off. I sure hope this isn't true

If you don't mind teams waiving their second round pick one month after they pick them - this is the game for you.

He's exaggerating - A LOT.

There are still issues, maybe even one or two small new ones from the patch, but by and large, the patch did a lot of good things.

For one, it dumped most bugs, and also tweaked everything that needed tweaking.

For the first time in seemingly... forever... Markus did a patch that patched things - instead of adding new "features" that don't work.

I read your post over on the OOTP boards. To me it didn't sound like the CPU actually placed the player on waivers so any team could claim him and put him on their roster. Wasn't the CPU trying to trade the prospect after the deadline which automatically placed him on waivers? If that's the case then I don't see it as a problem because any claim on the player would cancel the trade and all would go back to normal. I may be wrong about your situation, but that's what I gathered from what I read.

Actually, Im fairly certain you're wrong about 2- in that case, you're seeing real ratings. Then again, I could be wrong.

Waiving their second round picks? I don't see how a second round pick qualifies for waivers after only being in the game for a few months time.

I'm not arguing how it may actually work in the game, but it does not make sense that an "average scout" could see all the real ratings. If that were so, what would be the point of having scouts that are better than that in the game? (I know you are talking about scouts turned off, but everything says that means you see it as an average scout would...not the best scout)...

More on scouts and the changes:

I let a desktop and a laptop run sims overnight with an MLB-structured league. I disabled the coach/scout system on the laptop, and still found some later-round draft picks on the leader board. The #3 guy in hits all-time was a 3rd-round pick, and the #4 guy in hits was a 8th-round pick. 9 of the top 10 HR leaders were 1st-rounders. Looking around the no-scout league, I am seeing more draft-round variety in the pitching leaderboards than hitting. Here's the most "fun" player card I've run across so far. A 5th-round draft choice starter-turned-closer:

I would think that they would only be waived if someone was trying to 'trade' him after the deadline. Even then, it would not be a 'bug.'

From the looks of the wins and ERA leader board, I feel pretty good about pitching. The ERA leaders are primarily first-rounders, with some others in there, but some late-round guys are winning some ball games.

Hitting is interesting. Definitely it is *possible* for late-rounders to become good hitters, but it seems that it is very unlikely that they will become good *power* hitters. I wonder whether this is a development thing, or AI-valuing related. What I mean by the latter is that if the AI is drafting everyone with even low-medium power earlier on (and there's some evidence that is the case), then it makes sense that over the course of a career there's only so much that talent-increases can do for the late-round guys starting off with very low power talent.

Looking around a little more at hitting, I'm thinking that it may be just a power-hitter issue. 5 of the top 10 batting averages in the current season were turned in by non first-rounders. The league's leading hitter batted .375 and was the 4(101) pick. He has batted .318 or better for 6 consecutive seasons, but has never hit >4 HR's in a season. Similiarly, a guy who hit .346, has 7 straight .300 seasons, and was the 3(66) pick has never hit more than 6 HR's.

Now, a case can be made that having guys that hit for power being more readily identified than guys that hit for average mirrors real life. I'd need to see a study to make a judgement on that one.
